  • The 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid LE AWD ($29,379 as specced in Canada, $25,545 as specced in the US) is an affordable and fuel efficient option with little competition near its price in Canada. Powered by a 1.8L 4-cylinder engine and two electric motors, the AWD Corolla Hybrid is capable of 134 horsepower and has a claimed economy of 5.9 L/100 km (48 mpg) combined. Does this affordable little hybrid Toyota have any major faults that might take away from its attractive price, practicality, and fuel efficiency? Thomas and James investigate. Ah yes - this right here is why you guys are SO good at reviews; instead of crapping all over the car for not having a 500 hp engine, leather interior and handling like a 911, you applaud the car for what it's MEANT to be. That's awfully bad about dealers though - yet given how slimy many are, not hard to imagine them doing that.

You guys nailed the value proposition of the Corolla Hybrid. I own 3 of them for my driving school business. I bought the first in 2020 (now has over 100K trouble-free miles), and another in 2022 and one more this January. They are the perfect mix of “normal” for teaching new drivers, excellent mpg with a transparent hybrid system, spacious enough, and should be as reliable as a legacy Prius that donated its powertrain. I’ve owned several makes of cars in my 10-car fleet, and the Corolla Hybrids are the best.

This is how they get away with it. Because the car is technically “used” now. And they continue to get away with it because the dealership will quote you a 3-12 month wait on the model you’re interested in and all they have to do is get you the car in that time frame and they have met their obligations. The best I've done is 3.9l/100 km on a drive from Sarnia, ON to Ottawa ON which is about 700 km and i didnt stop for up until I actually reached Ottawa. The entire drive was incredibly relaxing thanks to the seats, the radar cruise and lane keep. I put some decent tires on for the winters here in Ottawa, and it did incredible too, averaging about 5.5-6L /100 KM per tank of gas with the heat on and everything. I do want to buy a second 'fun' car for the summers sometime soon, but for work, my side gig and for trips with my friends, this truly is car, and i wouldn't have it any other way.

I've always been a Corolla guy. I learned to drive on a Corolla as a little kid. We had a couple of them as our family car over the years. I've had quite a few old ones in my adulthood.
It's always been my go-to rental car for work travel (though I recently started branching out and trying to drive stuff I've never driven.)
    I've lived in a Corolla.
I've only bought 2 brand new cars in my life. A 2016 Civic T, and a 2023 Civic Sport Touring... I loved 2016. And I love my 23... but I do miss some Toyota stuff. This time I was trying to buy the new Prius, but I couldn't even test drive one within 400 miles of me. I couldn't wait 6 months or longer. I needed a car.
The civic is nice. But the lack of torque off-the-line and the rough, stiff ride make me miss all the $800-2500 Corollas I've had that were infinitely reliable, handled like a dream, and had surprisingly comfortable suspension. And all of them were quick. More than quick enough for normal driving, and quick enough to have a little fun.
I only ever drove one (a coworker's) that had no torque. Idk if I just got lucky with models and trims, or if there was something wrong with his car. But I hate stepping on the pedal and having to wait for the car to respond. Idc about 0-60. I care about 0-40, and 30-100. Because those are the things that matter in daily driving, and avoiding wrecks.

Wouldn't accept a cash purchase (make more money from financing), insisted we had to buy a $600 remote "insurance" package, so if we lost our remote, they'd replace it for "free," inflated "documents" charges, etc. Sleaze from top to bottom.
