    After taking all 3 for a test drive, I decided on the Mazda. The AWD variant is enough for dirt roads and reaching trail heads so it serves that purpose effectively. But the driving dynamics of the CX-30 just dumpster the rest of the segment, the steering, breaking, and acceleration feel closer to a sports car than a utilitarian subcompact. The interior is just way nicer and more comfortable for the driver and front passenger, while still having a functional enough back row. Mazda has also been voted the most reliable brand most years over the past 5 years according to CR and the CX-30 has less trouble history than the Crosstrek. They're all great, but Mazda has just been amazing over the past 5-7 years.

    My 20 cents:
    *Want something reliable? Go for Corolla Cross.
    *Want performance? go for Mazda.
    *Want the jack of all trades? Go for the CrossTrek.
    You cannot go wrong with this 3 options.
    For me is the Subaru.

      Yep that’s what I discovered with my HRV. At first..touchscreens in a car sounded COOL! But after a few days of driving, physical buttons should be the standard. Touchscreens are overrated and will cause accidents. I dont understand why people want it.

      I've had the crosstrek for over a month, having buttons was my priority but the wilderness had good features and we are moving to a future of screens anyway. I almost never touch the screen. Fantastic review of all cars. I've been debating between the Crosstrek premium and Corolla Cross LE. I test drove the Crosstrek but need to test drive the Corolla but no dealers have the car to drive. I just rented a 2021 Prius and fell in love with filling the tank for $30 and averaged 50 miles per gallon, so now I'm getting a price on the 2024 Prius and will decide between the three. The Corolla Cross LE is the most expensive and out of my price range.

      I'v debated about the price of the Corolla Cross. At those prices, I may as well stay with my 7yr old Rav 4. I want to see what 2024 reviews say. I've considered Mazda for a long time, but not with the back seats cramped. I'm 73 and love my 2016 Rav 4; it's my 3rd Rav. Problems I have with my present car are the blind spots (although I have all the bells and whistles) and as my arthritis gets worse I have a hard time getting into the driver's seat. I'm considering running boards as an option in my present car and in my next one if it is another Rav 4

    Another great review, very informative and well done. Thank you! You remind me a lot of my favorite car reviewer on Consumer Reports :) I am waiting for my Corolla Cross LE AWD, which I should receive in about 2 weeks. The dealer originally said it could take up to a year to get one, but luckily I only had to wait a little over a month due to a cancelled order. I am in Ontario, Canada, where the dealers have no new Toyota Cross's on their lots; everything is a factory order. The used ones with low mileage are selling for thousands more than MSRP!

    • @popuppete
      @popuppete 4 місяці тому

      I’m also in Ontario and just made my purchase last week.
      I called Toyota and they told me not to bother coming into the dealer as they had nothing for 8 months. That was for any of Corolla Hatch/Cross or RAV4.
      It was really bugging me how all the dealers I looked up said they had nothing new yet when I drove by there would be a bunch of current models on the lots.
      I eventually asked a sales manager I know what was going on. Because there are laws against selling vehicles over MSRP most places have a demo models that they let you drive around for a while. Then they say “this has too many km to sell new”. Add $3000 to the price and sell it as used. That’s why there are so many used models with very low km kicking around.

For long trips, I want the micro-adjustment that the power driver seat provides, and one just has to spend too much to get that on a Crosstrek (tho' if I lived in the mountains, I'd find the money).

    I’m currently shopping for one of these. I test drove all of the ones in your video. I didn’t like cx30 back space, visibility, hit my head on roof getting in and found gas pedal hard to press. The Toyota had noise on the highway, hard seats, no lumbar and the CVT engine is just awful. But their reliability is excellent. I’m leaning towards the Crosstreck for the drive comfort. Visibility is fine, has lumbar and can fit actual humans in back. Would love a video on trims that give you best bang for your buck in each model. I find that extremely helpful and no one makes videos on them.

It did not leave me stranded when i came home and saw my street (15 degree incline) completely unplowed. Drives great, good gas milage (i do sometimes regret not going electric) fantastic driving visibilty, i now get anxious driving other cars with blindspots. Infotanment doesnt bother me, almost everything can be accesed in one or two taps. My only complaints are: changing heat zones takes one more tap than id like, a lack of a subwoofer (even with the harman kardon upgrade. I recommend stock speakers and aftermarket upgrades if i did it again), eyesight cameras not doubling as a dashcam, and no chime warning you the moonroof is open when shutting off the car.

    I had a 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Limited which was rear ended at 30 mph and totaled. I walked away without a scratch (and the car was still drivable surprisingly). Subaru’s are the safest vehicle on the road, just go to any ER and when you look in the parking lot, it’s all Subarus. I’ve got a 2024 Crosstrek Limited which is on the new global platform with WRX steering. The CVT also went from 6 “gears” to 8. I’ve had it for 2000 miles now and it has improved over the 2022 that I owned. Since I drive for a living, it’s also my office and it is a very livable car. I highly recommend it.

    • @Bart200cc
      @Bart200cc 6 місяців тому +2

      @@richardmichael59 1) ER docs don’t make enough money to afford those cars. 2) The Mazda CX-30 does not recommend towing at all. And my 2024 Crosstrek will easily tow up to 1500lbs, the Wilderness will easily tow 3500 due to a change in the rear suspension and rear differential, which is why it is rated at 3500lbs. 3) The Mazda sucks on ice, snow, and dirt. Plus if I am getting a car for driving pleasure, it would not be a CX-30. It would be a Miata or GT 86/BRZ.

I'm a single woman and I needed something that would have my back since I have no intention of buying another car in the next decade or so and don't know what city I'll end up in. It feels nice too. Not luxurious like the mazda, not cheap like the toyota. 2022 has a cd player without that monstrosity of a screen too, so I'm 100% glad I got it when I did. Great for passengers or luggage (unfortunately not both), but my adventure buggy has saved my ass a few times already with insane city drivers and freak weather incidents...so yeah I'm in love.

    I got the 2024 Crosstrek Limited because I live in Western New York and anything short of AWD in the winter is asking for trouble, no FWD or RWD cars for me. I was thinking the Mazda CX-30 as the only other option because both the Corolla Cross and the HRV felt under powered (need a minimum of 180+ horse power in my opinion). I had a 2015 Impreza with the general body being the same shape for the most part so I was used the generous visibility, though in this model the new Subaru Eyesight system, with 3 cameras, takes up a bit of real estate though the spot it blocks also helps with blocking the sun out so it's not completely a bad thing lol. I didn't like the display and poor visibility of the Mazda though, the windows felt like I was trying to peer through a mail slot in a door and the back seat leg room is laughable as well. The Crosstrek also just felt more homey to me at least as well.

Maybe have the 3 cameras separate from another, one in each top corner and one behind the rear view mirror so something like that, I don't know if that ruins the function of the system but they just need to make it less obstructive for other people that may find it obstructive.

    Great review and insights! In regards to upgrading to the hybrid on any model, I think reviewers really do a dis-service by not adding that you will pay more for that upfront and later. if you are like me and usually keep a vehicle for more than a decade, plan on replacing that hybrid battery at around 100k miles. It's a costly repair and I think eats into any fuel savings of a hybrid. Insurance on hybrids is also typically higher as is maintenance cost. (two power systems to maintain).

    Good video! I spent more than six months researching for my next car purchase. I needed an affordable daily driver that would go on weekend nature/beach/camping excursions. I actually narrowed it down between these three vehicles. I eliminated the Corolla Cross because it lacked power and felt, well, uninspired in its design. So, it came down between the Mazda and Subaru.
    I really thought that I would choose the Subaru. After all, Mazda has always been seen as the "discount Toyota." However, I have to say that I was very impressed with the CX-30. It has a VERY premium feel to it and it is incredibly fun to drive. It just feels "quality" and the difference in power between it and its competitors is pretty apparent in test drives. Plus, the Subaru actually had more QC issues than the Mazda -- particularly in the engine.
    For me, the Mazda feels like it has the premium feel of an entry-level luxury vehicle (like a Lexus), the build quality of a Toyota and the AWD of a Subaru. The Subaru was, well, a Subaru. So, I went with the Mazda CX-30 just a few months ago. I've never second-guessed my decision -- even when I pass by a Crosstrek on the road or at a state park. For the segment, the CX-30 just feels like the overall better value -- the most "bang for your buck."

I also really do not like CVT engines that much, and I’m very concerned that Subaru has gone to silicone instead of gaskets in many areas, for anyone who was hanging onto their car for a long time, the silicone will break down much sooner, causing problematic leaks, this will cause enormous repairs as the engine will have to be lifted to fix. Subaru did this because not only was it cheaper but it was much easier for the robots to get into the spaces, not a good change in my book.I’ll stick with what Mazda has under the hood.

    I thought the subwoofer in the Subaru was under the passenger or driver seat. Can’t remember which one!! But it does have one!!

      Not this model. I have the ‘24 Impreza RS and I’m sure they both have identical up-market sound systems: four, door mounted dual mid and woofer units and two, dash mounted tweeters. I find it to be a very good system. The amp is under the passenger seat.

    Symmetrical all wheeel drive is the advantage crosstrek has and its standard and not every car brand does all wheel drive the same and Subaru has always had the edge. I do dislike the tablet size touch screen though. Crosstrek>cx30>corolla cross

      The drive train is great, but their eye sight and CVT are terrible. The subarus also suffer from premature body corrosion.

      @wallycheladyn1190 never heard of premature body corrosion being a thing and I own two different subaru models. I agree with the eyesight but the cvt isn't horrible. I prefer a dct but for these cars it works fine.

    Idk why automakers have such a hard time making affordable vehicles these days. These are the 3 best in the class but $30k for decently equipped but woefully slow engines just doesn’t seem very value packed. I think its just going to get worse the more EVs and less ICE vehicles there are.

      @@braticuss Mazda builds them better than either Toyota or Honda these days. That has been my experience anyway. My 2020 new Toyota (Japan-built J-VIN one) had multiple mechancial/electrical failures that left me stranded & in need of towing during the 2 years that I kept it. Plus, other build quality issues as well. 19 months into my 2022 CX-30 CE ownership thus far & not a single problem or issue with the vehicle. Not even a token cabin rattle to annoy me yet (my Toyota developed more than I care to count). Times change. I wouldn't have even considered a Mazda15-20 years ago, back when the Ford partnership with them tarnished their reputation. But, they have come a long way since they became their own company again.
