  • This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the all-new Toyota Corolla Cross hybrid versus the Toyota RAV4 hybrid. The Toyota Corolla Cross hybrid is in the subcompact class compared to the compact RAV4 hybrid. We chose two Toyota Hybrids in our comparison this week, Corolla Cross Hybrid vs. RAV4 Hybrid, which one offers the best value? The Toyota RAV4 hybrid offers more power than the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, an extra 23 horsepower and both are matched to an ECVT. The Corolla Cross has a 2L 4-cylinder with Toyota’s hybrid synergy drive and a combined 196 horsepower. The RAV4 hybrid a 2.5L 4-cylinder with a combined 219 horsepower. Both come standard with electronic on demand AWD. Both the RAV4 and Corolla Cross hybrids are very close in ground clearance with the RAV4 offering 8.1” and the Corolla Cross 8”. Since the RAV4 is a compact SUV and the Corolla Cross in the sub-compact segment, the RAV4 is obviously bigger overall but by how much? For front row legroom the Corolla Cross actually offers more space, almost an extra 2”. Second row legroom is quite a bit smaller, the RAV4 has an extra 5.8”, that’s a big difference especially if you are putting car seats in the rear. Overall cargo space, there’s not a huge difference, the RAV4 has an extra 8 cubic feet/226 litres but it’s the space behind the 3rd row where there is quite a difference, the RAV4 has an extra 16 cubic feet/453 litres.
The Corolla Cross hybrid has a tire repair kit and the RAV4 hybrid a temporary spare tire.
Does it make sense to pick the larger Toyota RAV4 Hybrid for only a little more money? In Canada, if you choose the top trim Corolla Cross Hybrid and the XLE RAV4 Hybrid with the premium package, both have similar features, the RAV4 will only cost you an extra $3,275 CAD. The premium package also includes driver seat memory which the Corolla Cross doesn’t have.
In the US, the two trims that are the most similar are the top trim Corolla Cross hybrid and the RAV4 XLE model with the convenience package with options, the RAV4 is an extra $3,360 USD. This trim also includes a heated steering wheel which is not available on any trim of the Corolla Cross hybrid in the US.

I had a 2018 Rav4 Hybrid and if i bought new again would get the Corolla Cross Hybrid looks better to me then Rav4. Biggest problem no stock in Dealers might find a non hybrid Rav4 but everything else is a waiting game. Miss the days when there many choices @ the care dealer Kinda Sad...... Nice Job A&Z

I agree. No spare is not an option for me and the roads I drive. The non hybrid would probably be the way I’d go. But I’ve heard they are sluggish power wise. Probably not a deal breaker but I’d have to test drive one before buying which might be a problem in terms of availability. Nothing on dealer lots here.

I'm a longtime Toyota owner from 1975 and currently have an older Highlander with low mileage. It's been a real challenge to find our next Toyota and a hybrid, so all your videos have been quite helpful!! We ordered a new RAV4 XLE w the convenience package, and when it arrived we test drove it only to discover how noisy it was!! The CVT and the road noise were so loud, that we opted not to buy it! The size was right, but the noise and comfort were missing as well as the spare tire. Now we're back to the drawing board waiting for the Corolla Cross hybrids to arrive after June. Since we live in a big urban environment just south of you, the CC hybrid might just be the ticket for us oldsters. Maybe it's time to go test drive the Hyundai Tucson and the Kia Sportage as well! As always thanks for your insights!

I went to my local toyota dealer and test drove both the RAV4 hybrid and the Corolla Cross gas version. The hybrid isn't on the lot yet. I liked the feel of the cross and fit very well in it. The RAV felt decent but definitely bigger. I'm getting to retirement age with no kids so if I didn't have to haul a bunch of stuff, I'd stick with the Corolla Cross. It's a nice vehicle for everyday use and easy to drive. Unfortunately, the fellow at the dealership said it could take as long as 2 years to get one. The Rav hybrid, under a year.

Nice review. One negative about the CC hybrid in Canada is that roof rails are ONLY available for the XSE top trim, which really a bummer is these are standard on most other subcompact SUV. One advantage for the CC hybrid is that the high voltage MGR cable connector is now in the trunk and not underneath the car as in the RAV4 H, but the trade off is losing the spare tire. You also forgot to mention the drop in range in the CC hybrid compared to the RAV4, since it's gas tank is only 40L vs 55 L.

  • @halfgerardodaniel
    @halfgerardodaniel Рік тому +9

Great comparison, thank you! CC for me, I don’t need a bigger car. 5th generation hybrid engines seem very performant. Other reviewers are reporting encouraging numbers (great fuel economy and 0-60 in under 7s!!) Also, the reported corrosion in the Rav4 hybrid cable is problematic with all the road salt used in Canada. If you must get a larger vehicle, I’d wait for the updated RAV4, even if more expensive.

We wanted a lower trim model and possibly a Prime. The one we bought was literally the only one we could get. A customer cancelled an order, and we had to wait 4 weeks for it to arrive. Paying over list, and limited supply is a real problem. That was about a year ago...hopefully things are getting better!

Never have passengers, so I'm removing the front passenger seat to add even MORE UTILITY, 10+ft long carry inside, my kayak... easy camper. Still have back seats. May get hitch for bikes, additional cargo. Going to get spare kit, available, or save a few bucks and just buy components myself. Spare is standard Aussie and SE Asia markets. Far prefer CC over sister's Rav 4. Have full size Chev extra cab and suburban. They're for sale. CC AWD hybrid is absolute IDEAL vehicle for me, egress is perfect.

We have driven our 2020 Rav4 Hybrid now over 41000 miles. We have never changed the MPG reading (the big center number) since we had zero miles, and we are averaging 39.2 mpg on combined driving. We are empty nesters, but often utilize the entire cargo capacity on travels, so not sure we would be happy with a little smaller vehicle. We are very comfortable with the Rav4 Hybrid, would never consider gas-only, and would be happy keeping it for many years. However, we would consider the 'someday' Rav4 small hybrid pickup/ aka Stout.

I loved my 2002 Rav4 when it was smaller and based on the corolla. It was a joy to drive. The new Rav4 is too large. The gas version of the corolla cross was not fun to drive. Glad I didn't wait to find out it is another year for a hybrid cross that is missing too many features. The Rav 4 is noisy and a rough ride. After a decade of Prius and lackluster MPG in winter, I went to Subaru Crosstrek. The price, value, mpg made the Subaru a better choice. Toyota is in a nice restructure of their lineup. Unfortunately, there is a gap in this area currently. I'll wait and watch what happens and maybe they'll be back when I'm looking again in maybe 8 years.

I ordered the rav4 hybrid in 2022 june. The dealer is saying that I'm not expected to get a 2023 model, which means either year end or early next year. I just hope they dont mark up the price yet again. They've already increased the price $2600 for my trim + tax for not really any additional features other than the new 8 inch screen vs the 7 inch in the old one. Im not impressed and not happy about the wait times. This is vancouver.
There are toyota dealers in Vancouver doing:
    1. 7-8k "market adjustment fee" - this dealership is in the east side of the map, close to a river.
    2. a name brand automobile group (a big one), not allowing any orders unless if you have a car to trade in, so to earn more money based on second hand vehicle resell. They cap all trade in car value to 31k no matter if you bring in a brand new 50k car.
All in all this is just predatory business strategy from shitty dealerships here in Vancouver. If Andrea and zach are to know anybody in Toyota Id be wishing for you to voice out against these ridiculous business practices. People need cars, it's a necesity, and toyota need to get their shit together, not bid up pricing and offer nothing in return. the XLE after tax and everything is now 47k, which is not far at all from the ridiculous Honda CRV hyrbrid touring trim. Not to mention the german brands only starting at the low 50s. It's a horrible time to be looking for a new vehicle at the moment, especially if you deperately need one. My family still has two cars, but they're both over 12 years old and I don't know how far they'll go. One's a civic and one's a mercedes.
Looking at other places around the world, there's barely any car shortage (mainly in Asia). Having this issue in Canada for half a decade is ridiculous!

If I try to save money but have nice seats RAV4 XLE would have better seats than both S and SE Corolla cross trims - which are limited to manual 6 way seats.
So if I want nice seats I'm forced to compare RAV4 XLE vs CC XSE (even though it isn't "fair")
    RAV4 hybrid XLE is
Corolla cross hybrid XSE is $32400 and RAV4 hybrid is $34070
Better like to like comparison is XLE premium/XSE with JBL premium sound. And here CC shines - rav4 XLE premium with premium JBL sound starts at $39445 (XSE even more than that), realistically over $40k
While CC XSE with premium sound starts at $34450 - pretty much $5000 difference.
    It does make sense.

If you can get either of them. I would want the Corolla and only for the extra mpg, what kills it is that front end. 🤢🤮 Also, to answer your question I would prefer a real tire over the kit. I’ve had blowouts where the entire side was gone and a kit would have done nothing. But, I’ve also put on my spare and it was flatter than the one I was changing so it can be argued either way. Also, I already own a very decent air pump because most gas stations air pumps are either broken or cost money to use at almost $1 per minute. I guess what I’m saying is I don’t need a second air pump or a can of tire fix that I can get from walmart. The better choice is at least the “option” because everything is an option these days on a car so why not the tire. But, could someone try and put a real (or as close to real as they come) tire back there to see if it would clear the battery disconnect?

As of 2024, the Rav4 is cannot be had with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 that is standard to the Cross. (The 2024 Rav4 is Toyota Safety Sense 2.5)
That means the 2024 Rav4 does not have the Low-Light Pedestrian Detection, Bicyclist detection, True Lane Centering Assist, “Full Stop” Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, reconizes fewer types of Road Signs and has no Intersection Support that the Cross has.

The Cross is a more compact and athletic drive. RAV4 feels more substantial. Even if the Cross is smaller inside, the interior styling is more modern. As cheesy as RAV4's interior quality does, Cross feels a bit higher quality on certain areas. Given my appetite for small cars, my pick will go for Corolla Cross until new RAV4 arrives next year. Then we will see how far has Toyota improved its interior quality, as well as , base engine's NVH standard.

  • @Vanilla_Donut

I would say Rav4. More spacious interior and a bit better mileage. When the family goes out, we can use one car instead of two. Saying that, won't have all the bells and whistle as a SE or XSE in the Corolla Cross for similar pricing. If Toyota reduces the front row leg room by 1" to 2" into the second row seats for the Corolla Cross, it would be the winner. I sat in one before and behind my driving position at 5'6", I had under 1 inch of space from the knees to the rear seat; quite a disappointment for me when I saw it.
