    As much as the video might indeed be considered "cringe" due to the early 2000's YT humor... It really shows the fragility of the average Twitch viewer when they want to skip the video before it even starts, because it criticizes their favorite streamer or the platform.

      Right? And I gotta say, the people who say “playing games isnt work / hard” clearly wouldn’t be a good streamer, as it takes many things, for example; planning ahead and making sacrifices that may interfear with preplanned family & friend time (especially for twitch partners who require certain amounts of time)
      And like to those who say it’s easy, lets not forget how stressful it can be to be in a partnership and begin to lose numbers, whether it’s “your fault” or not, especially when the vocal amount of people will spread rumors about someone quickly even if you didn’t do it.
      And also there’s the fact that you have to entertaining in some way, like no one is going to want to watch a comedian is he fucking sucks. So entertaining others definitely takes skill.

    For what it's worth- Mat is VERY tapped into how the UA-cam algorithm works. I've seen criticism about the part of the video where he explains the ins and outs of UA-cam but actually he is the FIRST person I would trust with that. I believe he even coaches/advises other creators on it. He is judicious and passionate about that shit and I think it's FASCINATING.

      The thing is, all of Asmon's twitch chat, even Asmon himself and everyone who dislikes the video pretty much either forget or don't know that MatPat quite literally does research all of this along with his team, he pretty much studies this as if it's the exam subject.

They CANNOT make an algorithm to do this or you end up like youtube... getting in shit for banning youtubers just because a company told them to. If you automate the process, you're literally playing Russian roulette. You can literally be streaming a black screen and be taken down by a DMCA strike that takes a week to fully handle. Then what? Is twitch supposed to go after large production companies for filing false claims, therefore preventing future partnerships? Who would partner with a company that could turn around and throw you under the bus because of the actions of ONE employee?

    People often forget that discussion is incredibly important and creating an opinion based off of no prior knowledge is not a healthy thing to do. I'm willing to bet most people supporting and hating GT have no idea how anything actually works. They picked a side and that's that. Asmon, who's trying to be a bit more objective - though not fully, obviously - is stuck in-between.
    I think copyright IS flawed. It was written before the advent of the internet. Anyone claiming that it's fine and there's nothing wrong with it HAS NOT READ THE ACTUAL INTERNATIONAL LAW. There is a lot of room for abuse, there is a lot of vague language on topics that simply were not relevant when it was written. They are now. The internet has connected us in such an unimaginable way that the current copyright law is broken. Tom Scott has an incredible video essay on the topic.
    That being said, there is a case to be made for react videos. Transformative content is not the same as stolen content. If someone takes a 20 minute video and makes it an hour long because of added commentary or content, I genuinely believe that that video is not the same as the original anymore. It might seem easy to react - and it is if you do it wrong - but really good reaction videos contain a plethora of information that the original does not provide you with. Be that critique, commentary or improv.

    • @KristenElizabeth4
      @KristenElizabeth4 2 роки тому +55

      I really like the way you differentiated between reaction content that makes a contribution by exceeding the time of the original content with thoughtful analysis or at least decent commentary versus lazy reacting that’s easy and it looks easy because it was easy

    • @Axetheflurryofflames
      @Axetheflurryofflames 2 роки тому +41

      Problem is, there really isn't a ton of react content that tends to add enough to make it transformative in a lot of ways. Frankly, Asmongold is pretty much the king of this cause he can spitball just about any he's watching into some anecdote, observation, or tangentially related topic to add substantial amounts of commentary to the content, that for the most part, people watching the reaction typically are just there to hear Zacks thoughts as opposed to just being solely interested in the video, or even primarily interested in the video.
      There are a few other streamers who usually do a good job of this as well, but not nearly enough for many to be considered transformative across the board unfortunately. No doubt though, Copyright law is severely outdated, and probably will remain so till younger generations make their way into positions capable of making changes to it.

    • @xiuhwho
      @xiuhwho 2 роки тому +14

      @@Axetheflurryofflames Just to make sure, I'm not defending react content as it is now. Most react content *is* just a guy/girl watching a video while laughing every 2 minutes and then ending their video as soon as the original ends. Adding very little to no of their own personality or opinion except for "DON'T FORGET TO LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE".
      In fact, when I watch react content like that I click off almost immediately. In most cases, I've already seen the video, I'm here for their opinion/commentary; I don't want to rewatch the video.
      The type of react content that I enjoy is, for example, Vlogging Through History. The guy reacts to videos that deal with events in history, and then comments on them. He adds a lot of interesting footnotes to the content he watches.
      The type of react content I hate is what Jinx did (does? If he's still around).
      EDIT: I agree, there isn't enough of this type of react content. People think putting a "disclaimer" in the description or a "fair use timer" gives them a moral high ground but it doesn't. And I hate that. People just need to ADD things to the stuff they're watching. If you have nothing to add, don't upload the video!

    • @TheSylveonSurfer
      @TheSylveonSurfer 2 роки тому +25

      I'd also add that react content isn't the only content harmed by outdated copyright. Theory and analysis videos that use clips of shows or music and fan-content all suffers. The anime community understands the pains of copyright abuse better than any most because Japanese companies absolutely love abusing it. The AMV (Animated Music Video) niche within the anime community was pretty much destroyed through that alone. Nintendo also massively abuses copyright whenever it's convenient for them.
      Copyright and DMCA needs to be amended at all levels to provide support for those that make a living by essentially promoting the things they're reacting to or making content for.

    • @xiuhwho
      @xiuhwho 2 роки тому +5

      @@TheSylveonSurfer I agree, if a creation requires the injection of your own talent, then yes, I think copyright shouldn't apply. However, it's very difficult to quantify talent, so I think fan-creations would always go through a case by case basis.

    "It's not because it's easy content, it's because it gave them lots of viewers"
    While not exactly wrong, Asmon seems to miss the whole point there. It was because it was easy content, easy content to gain lots of viewers. To act like it was done solely just because of lots of viewers is extremely disingenuous. There are multiple ways to get lots of viewers on Twitch, most require effort on the creators part. That whole meta was based around easy content for easy views. Maximizing profit while minimizing effort. Simply put, yes it was done because it was easy content that lead to profitable viewership. Asmon just seems to feel attacked because he partakes in a form of easy content. Hell, we are all here watching it now or were doing so on stream. Reaction videos are easy content for easy views. Doesn't mean it's less valid or any such thing. But to claim easy content creation isn't a common reason to do these things is so far from truth.
    "If you don't own your own time what does anything else matter?"
    This is why people choose easy content. To control the amount of effort and time put into a product that you hope to maximize the profit from. Nothing wrong with it either. Once again though to act like viewer count was the only determining factor is so disingenuous. Viewer count was the goal but the content was the method and was determined by the ease of production.
    To sum up.
    Yes, streaming TV shows for viewers was low effort content that lead to easy views, just like reaction videos do. They are both "easy" content to produce and that is a driving force when coupled with the desire for a higher viewer count. To act like it was just about the viewer count is a joke. It was about the ease of obtaining that viewer count. Yes they wanted the higher count, they also didn't want to put the amount of effort/time into obtaining it that is often required of other types of content to build that viewer count so they went with easy content to do so.

    There is an amazing Tom Scott video about how the copyright system is not made to deal with the modern content creation landscape. UA-cam's system is amazing at dealing with this while protecting the platform, the downside being that anyone can claim anything in bad faith and the content creator gets screwed, but UA-cam can't change the law, and so, it does the best it can do. Twitch on the other hand has basically no system, to any creator big enough any punishment twich can provide is a slap on the wrist, and I think it's a miracle that a bunch of music labels/ tv producers hasn't cracked down yet, but if they do, either twitch comply, change the law, or goes down.

    I think Zack is missing the point of "Meta" when referencing "Twitch Meta". When people are talking about twitch meta they aren't talking about "the things that generate the most views". Because its obvious video games will still be at the forefront of twitch.
    What "Meta" is, is Money Generation. The generation of subs/donations. What meta proposes the most *monetary* growth in the shortest amount of time. Female Streamers. More specifically, female streamer who play tightrope on what is acceptable in a sexual sense on twitch.
    There is a reason why the moment one of these popular women got banned on twitch they opened an OnlyFans and hit over 1 million dollars generated within a short timespan. That twitch viewership immediately went to consume that content.
    And if you really think about it that sucks. It doesnt suck much for men, it actually hurts female content creators. Several of them spoke out on it. Its not rocket science to see that this creates this expectation that women are supposed to expose more of themselves just to obtain a larger viewership at a faster rate.
    However, with the advent of VTubers and their proliferation this growing trend is giving women an avenue to obtain this viewership while, sometimes, forgoing to the route of things such as sexual asmr streams.
    People really need to dig into the psychology of this stuff.

    This Reaction summarized:
    GT shows a graph, an image representing a meta or an event, a content creator in the video.
    Zack pauses it immediately, spends 5 minutes on a tangent that revolves around a point the video didn't even try to make. Zack masterfully disproves that artificial point, given it is of his own making, but still pretends like that point wasn't a strawman he himself put up, but instead something the video tried to communicate.
    Zack unpauses the video.
    GT gets to finish (or even start) their point.
    Zack: "Oh yea I agree"
    The other thing to mention would be the immense amount of background knowledge asmon has with little to no references. Stuff about how the systems work, how none of it on twitch is apparently automated according to asmon (which is just not true) and much more.
    Asmon seemed so eager to shit on this video, when GT went on about the metas, Asmon paused on the word "Gambling" and went on about how the gambling meta doesnt really exist, named a few streamers while leaving out obvious contenders (XQC) without even realizing that this section of the video was a retrospective on the evolution of different metas on twitch.
    The man then goes on to check the frontpage for the supposed wave of hot-tub and gambling streams and finds none, maybe because that section of the video wasn't referencing the present but the past perhaps? And what does viewcount on the frontpage matter when the most controversial part of that camgirl meta wasn't the viewer counts, but the fact that the algorythm would put those channels into the recommended tab or recommend them at the end of streams as if you watching a gaming stream had anything to do with watching someone dip their tits into an indoor pool.
    This all gets even dumber when this very channel uploaded videos about those kinds of metas in the past, when there's clips of Asmon looking at the frontpage, seeing ten near-nude women and leaning back going "oooh my good duuuud :DDD *puts hands over eyes*".
    You're watching a video that researched a timeline of events that happened and a guy that misses the point and goes "I dont see no gambling here, and no women either!". Its like someone sitting in a WW2 movie and saying "WW2 isn't real, I aint seein any nazis around! Are any of y'all seein any nazis here? Cuz I sure ain't seein any of em!"
    And I honestly cannot stress enough how much "knowledge" about Twitch's inner workings is dropped from Asmon's side here. Some of it is common knowledge, other stuff i've never heard before. This would be impressive, if it didn't feel like half of it is made-up or without basis.
    And yea people are shitting on the GT video, because GT is coming from a legal / youtube / tv pov and has accepted the fact that Twitch won't revolutionize copyright law, but instead needs to learn to play by the rules. The common viewer sees that and goes "Nooo, I ran away from the big bad Television Media to hang out on twitch 24/7, dont turn my twitch into a tv channel man >:( Freedom for the internet!!", when that's just a stoic idiot take, because twitch is not this bastion or fortress of freedom, twitch just wasn't hit hard enough with the hammer yet.
    And yea, I agree, copyright law can suck a ton, I think the DMCA shit is way overboard, a neckbeard talking over a song shouldnt be considered copyright infringement, because the song in its pure form isn't streamed. I also, however, understand that streaming full ppv episodes of shows while having your parasocial friend in the corner reacting to it is clearly a violation, because you're basically creating the situation of watching a show with your friend.
    And on that note, if Asmon wants to play the same 3 songs at the start of his stream, but feels like harder copyright laws would prevent that, why doesn't he just buy the license to stream those songs, because in that specific scenario, there is no commentary, there is no sound effects of anything, not even alerts, its just the songs being played before the stream starts, thats quite literally a radio-broadcast, so why exactly is he so hell-bent on not playing by the rules? DMCA goes overboard quite often, I see that, but in cases where you actually *just* provide the piece of media unaltered and uninterrupted, you really don't have any reason to pin the blame on dRaConIaN copyright laws.

    The dumbest part about copyright law is the need to proactively defend it.
    The vast majority of dmca/ cease and desist letters are made not because a company sees the potential infringement itself as a threat but because not acting can be used against them in the future.
    It also has had a snowballing effect, the more aggressive entities are in regards to the the more aggressive everyone has to be to protect the property.
    For example say there are dozens of fan projects made in regards to an ip that that become moderately popular and the copywrite holder does nothing viewing them as harmless fan expressions. Then some group tries capitalizing on it and makes something more commercial that now directly competes. They can use the fact that the company has knowingly and willingly forgone its hold on the copyright. Most of the time this still won't hold up on its own but it almost certainly make the legal process longer and more expensive and it's viewed as a needless risk.

    Mat pat is one of the most well versed people on the UA-cam algorithm. Twitch not so much.
    There's definitely some moral nuance to the discussion of copyright enforcement and twitches laid back "not caring unless action is taken"
    But a most of what he say's is grounded in some logic, even if you don't think it's the right move or are against strict CR enforcement.
    He definitely said there where meta's on UA-cam (aka longer video's for ad rev etc) he just didn't go deep into it because it was a segway mention to twitch meta's. He implied the meta's where different.
    Asmon's meta example is comparing a dead meta, (that got nerfed because it was so effective.) then looking at it in the current day
    They literally added rules and made changes to regulate the "erotic," fake gamer content, asmr and just chatting, including separating them from other categories.
    It's unfair to use the current channel/category lists to downplay old meta's influence. Obviously they're going to be less impactful now that meta shifted or got regulated.
    -
    Mat pats point in it being twitches fault is more so that twitch doesn't enforce it, which leads to people thinking they can get away with it, which leads to people getting harsher punishments for it later down the line. (obviously it's the streamers fault, but if twitch was better this wouldn't even be as big of an issue)
    Especially relating to the point where they actively encourage doing it but just delete the evidence after.
    The way they "wipe their hands of liability" actively hurts the creators for this very reason.
    UA-cam copyright is toxic, but if it warns you BEFORE you upload the video, you can't get a strike or sued. (yeah UA-cam also will let people steal your revenue for practically anything but hey they're both shit :D)

    You might think it's crazy, but Twitch was basically born from an illegal site (much like Crunchyroll for Anime). In the early days before Twitch existed, there was a site called Justin TV (JTV). This site started out as some guy named Justin Live Streaming his life or something, but soon the site allowed other people to create their own streams. This birthed many 24/7 streams that did nothing but stream entire series. There was probably a stream for every show you might want to watch, or the show would show up on one of the numerous variety channels. There were a few people on this site that would stream their own content, and there were a number of podcasts or radio streams. Some people even streamed live gameplay.
    Eventually, they broke off the gameplay portion to form a new site (I think I may still have the announcement email somewhere) called 'Twitch," and sometime later JTV closed down.

    12:55 yeah but main difference is that I've seen Hasan, _multiple times_ outright just leave the stream, gets up to go do something, but keeps the video playing, for minutes at a time sometimes. I've seen him doing that repeatedly, whereas asmon always has input on stuff, never seen Asmon do that, not with the frequency of Hasan at least.
    Difference being one is watching something because they're genuinley interested, the other is just watching because it's free content.

    People kinda need to learn that there needs to be copyright and there needs to be a balance. You shouldn't be able to stream a game if the devs or the company don't want it streamed, period, same with music or anything else. Twitch does need to get stricter with a lot of stuff, and when there are barriers, you definitely should be harshly punished. My main issue with copyright is when the creators are dead, a lot of it is just stupid, nowadays there is absolutely no reason not to conserve whatever work somebody does and to share it online openly for free when they die (unless there are good reasons not to or the person doesn't consent to that)

All of this while friends of mine were out partying and enjoying more of their free time. What happened once I finished my degree? I was pretty much unemployed for a full year, I couldn't even land an interview, while those same friends I mentioned were able to land jobs in somewhat decent paying fields and start building a proper career.

    I really hope there's a system for reaction content where you can integrate youtube videos into twitch or yt live streams and yt videos themselves, so that when someone is watching UA-cam videos and reacting to it , you get the reaction as well as the content creator whose video is being reacted to gets their views. It doesn't hurt anyone, except that UA-cam might earn more money so in a way it does hurt twitch that their competitor makes more money but then again twitch isn't concerned with videos at all , and regardless this system could be integrated into youtube at least. Well youtube needs a lot of stuff done so there's that
    Love this video . I like how you made the video transformative,like this video is four times longer than the original video I think. Subbed instantly

    12:55 Asmon, you're a respected individual, so don't compare yourself to Hasan. If you react to someone's content, you provide your own thoughts and insights, and most importantly, give all the credits and respect to those creators by not skipping their ads section/outro. That may seem like a normal thing but is the nicest gesture of respect. Hasan fails to do any of those.

    See here's the thing, MatPat and his team works on all of these videos as if he's preparing for the finals, when he says how copyright or DMCA work he isn't speculating like most people (especially the stupidass and cringy twitch chat), he knows what he's saying. People (and even Asmongold, a little bit, cause he said that MatPat wants to share his agenda and whatnot when the dude's job is handling this specific subject, there's no agenda, just facts) tend to forget this about Game Theory, dude actually does research. On top of that he has connections with big names that work at youtube along with the CEO herself.
    This whole video getting hated on (not Asmon's reaction, the og Game Theory video) boils down to twitch fanatics getting triggered at someone spitting straight facts about their favourite platform or streamers.
    Edit:
    And something that I disagree with Asmongold on is that there's no excuse that twitch has bad copyright enforcement for livestreams, twitch is the first platform ever to have livestreaming, why the fuck do other platforms do it better ?

    UA-cam's copyright system has basically traumatized most creators into being VERY, VERY careful around anything even close to copyright infringement. Most larger UA-camrs tend to have at least a pretty decent idea of what fair use and transformative content is. Most Twitch streamers, it seems, have no fuckin' clue and just do whatever they feel like. Look at big channels like Hasan Piker, AhRelevant, etc. They do not transform the work enough for it to be considered fair use in many cases. At this point it's a matter of time before Twitch gets sued and all these streamers get hit hard because the Adpocalypse-type scenario that will be.

    I don't think you can call this Game Theory video "the most hated video on youtube", as that title belongs to the 2018 Rewind. If anything, it's the most hated video on Twitch because it calls out the platform that its users enjoy
