Thanks for taking the time to share this view of the underside after five years. A high mileage 28kWh version of this car is an affordable option, so it is encouraging that the car is lasting so well.

The steel box at the back is the battery pack. These don't have the skateboard design of more modern cars. Shared platform with petrol and hybrid, so only space was under the boot, and rear seats.
Thanks a lot for this, great to see how this car is dealing with the years and the miles. A friend of mine here in France has the same vintage (2017) with I think about 85,000 km...I believe his only problem with the car was that one of the regen paddles stopped working, replaced under warranty of course. I have a 2019 Kia e-Niro, it would be interesting to see how they look from a similar inspection. Interesting that Hyundai Motor Group is the only car company in the world which makes its own steel. People talk about how vertically integrated Tesla are but HMG have a lot of control over their component inputs to the finished product too, Hyundai Mobis are the world’s 6th biggest car components supplier.
Great video. I've got 65k miles on my 2018 Ioniq and still very happy.
My 17 plate Ioniq, needed the AA as the charger wouldn't lock in place. Repaired under warranty even though it just ran out. A great big plus to Hyundai.

Very interesting, would like to see a 38kWh Ioniq comparison to see if Hyundai are maintaining this quality although obviously will be a newer vehicle.

The build quality and corrosion resistance of all Hyundai cars, be it EV or conventional is excellent. Have an i10 (2014), looks like new underneath also.
Do you also drive in winter when the roads are covered with salt?

Nice clean car, especially for 92k miles.
On our 2017 with 218,000KM, the rust started to appear on the battery pack and frame behind the plastic undercovers. We have a lot of salt on the roads. If you lived in an hostil environnement, consider rust proofing it.

Thanks for your videos! I have a 2021 Ioniq and have driven 111,000 km so far. I haven’t had to change any brake pads, or do any other maintenance except change to snow tires in the winter.
I added some coolant about two months ago as well.
Yesterday I had the “add coolant” light come on for the first time, and your video about that issue was helpful because the levels are full.
It’s still cold here in Canada so I’m not sure I’ll take on the challenge of spin the coolant flush myself but we’ll see. I agree with what you said about the dealership likely only doing a 1/3 flush because they wouldn’t really take the time needed to do everything you did. And they’ll still probably charge as if they used 4.7 litres!
You'll get the coolant flush/change done free of charge as its a recall issue.

Finally got to sit in my first evs at a local car show. Found the new MG Zs ev to be better quality inside than the Kona, Citroën eC4 or even the MG5 so it's my new favourite after this Ioniq. I need to find one to sit in, if I can get in and out of it, ie its not too low I think it's still better equipped, just, than the Trophy version of the MG Zs. For economy alone it has to be favourite... Still have to wait a couple of years though... 😔

Having been told by dealer after battery coolant recall - there is some damage to my battery undercover tray to the side of the triangular (subframe mounts?) where you have the blue jack. Would appreciate your opinion to criticality of this undertray to the protection of the battery - as it seems from your video more for aerodynamic purposes (and some protection) as you mention.
I feel it would be suitable to patch up the hole rather than go through the expense / pain of the entire front tray replacement. Your videos have been great in helping me choose the Ioniq EV and things to look out for! Thanks in advance.

Very helpful video. Many thanks. My 2019 Ioniq 28 has only done 26k miles and the dealer reckons it needs rear discs and pads replacing due to surface corrosion. They provided a video of the car on the ramp to illustrate this. It would have been nice to look at the rear pads & discs in your video for comparison. 😀

Thanks for informative videos! I bought a 2017 ioniq two weeks ago. From what I've heard these should be quite reliable cars, but there has been issues with a bearing in the electric motor that has failed prematurely. Have you heard of this? Apparently hyundai replaced those motors under warranty, but as these have become outside warranty people have had to disassembled motors and put a new bearing there.

@@silicaskynet3401 There is one video from Michael Schmitt B.E.N with one owner who has 250k km driven almost only motorway and fast charging. The car still has its full capacity. My IONIQ is at 130k Km and also at 100% SOH. So im optimitsic that i can do 500k with ease.
Thanks for the great coverage of value EVs. I’ve been pondering an Ioniq for a long time for my work commute. On this and other videos you’ve mentioned that the car still reports 100% SOH. Surely there’s been at least a little bit of degradation, right? Is it 100% because degradation is smaller than the charge buffer? Do you find with your Ioniq that you can drive just as far as when you first got it? Any indication of degradation in any way?

Thank you once again for a very helpful and informative video. The battery SOH is very reassuring. Does it indicate if it’s been rapid charged. Moving onto tyres. Anticipating they are more expensive due to the cars weight what kind of wear can be expected from a tyre when driven in a normal sensible manner.

Rapid charging does not effect the battery either.
@@GoGreenAutos Its because the IoniQ doesnt have a big batterie. A Tesla car is more around 2 Tons.
@@SLMPP1 Yes the Model S is, but that's a huge car. The Tesla Mode 3 is more like the size of the Ioniq and they don't weigh my more - only 1726kg.

Do you think there' s anywhere underneath the Ioniq to mount a dieselheater to warm up the cabin. I live I Sweden and the battery suffers both from lover efficiency for the tracksion and from warming the cabin up in hard winter conditions. A dieselheater to warm up the cabin would help in those conditions. For one hour drive (ca 60 miles) the fuel consumption would be around 0,2 liter. That's very low compared to ICE.

I stumbled across the video while looking to see where the ambient temperature sensor is. I’m assuming at the very front but I can’t see an easy way of accessing it. Any idea where it is and how I get to it? Thanks

How did your own Ioniq recall go ?
Mine has been cancelled twice by the dealership on the day of collection awaiting parts !
Have you had a wheel geometry check on yours as mine was checked when I had a full set of tyres fitted
Front and rear tracking misaligned and after adjustment one measurement was out according to the computer print out
I challenged the dealership about this error but no corrections have been made to my knowledge
Recall completed on ours. Still not sure what was actually done. My partner collected the Ioniq and they explained what was done to her and then relayed back to me as "didn't understand a word of it".

My old Hyundai i30 diesel looks like that underneath at least as far as underbody rust goes. 11 years & 250,000 miles.
Very encouraging video for me! I recently purchased a 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Classic EV with serious mileage on it, (125,000 miles!), but still motoring perfectly and battery SOH at 100%. I really like the car, but the electric motor whine is louder than I expected. Mechanically, everything seems fine, everything works, no warning lights or any other issues, just wondering about the whine? Very noticeable under motorway speeds?
Motor whine is common on Renault EVs, especially the ones with the Continental motor and they start whining at about 30,000 miles. Its not a known Ioniq issue but I guess it will start at some stage and there aren't many around with your sort of mileage. Its basically due to the bearings on the electric motor. They can be changed, but its not something that the main dealers would or could do and the bearings are not a part the OEMs sell. Instead the motor is one whole assembly.
However, there are people now who are changing the bearings in Renault Zoe motors. Its quite a big job as the motor obviously has to come out and the bearings are sourced elsewhere, but it can be done.
From my experience of the older Renault EVs, they do still last a long time with the whine.

The car is driving fine right now, and I have heard of Ioniq EVs with over 180,000 miles on them in the US. I guess you get what you pays for, and this was relatively cheap, as a starter EV. I'd certainly recommend them, they are great little cars!

Very little. They were about £27,000 in the UK when new in 2016, but I suspect probably cheaper than that at the time as EVs were in low demand and many had huge discounts available. I suspect they were around £24-25K. The car now used with this many miles (which is a lot for these) is around £18,000.

A lot of people keep asking me about battery state of health. If the 28kWh car fills up on the electrical power gauge and the range is around 140 miles when fully charged do I need to bother with battery health checks?
Mines currently showing about 135 on full, and I know the battery is at 100% health from a scan.. So I wouldn't bother unless the car has mega miles on it, the batteries are pretty bulletproof.

I have a 2017 Ioniq Electric, and recently, within the last couple of weeks, it's developed a rather loud, annoying squeak/groan from the front suspension. Most noticeable when turning into a driveway or going over large undulations in the road. I have to be driving slow to hear it. Don't notice it while at speed. Someone suggested that it might be the sway bar bushings. Would you be able to show on camera what these are, and are they easy to fix? I was hoping you'd point them out in this video, but you didn't.

Its the front axles screws, they are loose, due to electric cars having a strong acceleration, they tend to get loose faster in electric cars, it needs to be lifted and tightened only, this problem is popular here in Jordan with electric cars, especially with people who drive hard of the electric pedal.
@@GoGreenAutos That's exactly what it was, the sway-bar drop links, the original ones were seizing up. A quick and easy repair. All done in less than an hour.

To make reliable cars for the general public, I think that nothing else is needed, not even that they are hyper-technological.

The electric motors for Hyundai and Kia are made by Mobis, a fully owned subsidiary of HMG and the 6th biggest car parts supplier in the world...A company I’d never heard of until I started asking questions about the motor in my e-Niro

Got one of the same age/colour, getting creaking from the suspension when weight transfers at low speed from turning/braking/even accelerating, all corners.. Garage can't see anything physically wrong with the suspension though, any ideas?!
I'd say dry control bushes
Spray ACF50 on all parts of suspension (£18 a tin which will do it all) , I guarantee all creaks and squeaks will go. Works every time, you have classic "DRY" suspension. Do not use WD40 as it will not do the job. even a good spray of silicone oil will do the job.
So would you say that undersealing / rustproofing would be unnecessary. If it was to get done what areas would need treated?

Under trays are a doddle to remove. Just a few 10mm bolts and plastic push clips.
As for prices of a replacement, I don't know. You'll have to ask the parts person at a Hyundai dealership.
I'm thinking of buying a 2017 IONIQ plug in or a Toyota Auris Hybrid but unfortunately the Toyota is rusting very badly or the hyundai tDoes it rust like that?
Curious much it would cost to replace a battery or motor.
You mention Nissan LEAF and ENVs but I'm not clear if you mean that those you have examined are more prone to corrosion than average or less.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. Nissans are generally much rustier than this Ioniq at this age. Nothing serious or anything to worry about and they're not significantly worse than the industry standard. All modern vehicles are pretty good when it comes to rust and they probably all use the same construction & painting processes. With all vehicles though, it depends on where they've spent their life. Any vehicle near the coast will be worse than others.

I have a 40kwh Nissan leaf. 75k km. How often should I change the gearbox oil?
Nissan say "sealed for life" but the reality is that it should be done about 50,000 miles.
Can a towbar be fitted to these.?
The electric version is not rated for towing. You probably can if its just to be used for bikes..if a suitable towbar exists?
I think they are not rated but I have seen globally there are some that have been retrofitted to the electric version and it does work. Probably not for heavy loads but it should work for couple hundred pounds.
The box in the rear you dont know what is inside is the battery pack.

Sorry, I don't know where it is. Its not something I've needed to look for. They're often in the mirrors on other vehicles.
