TheGreatsagegoku no bonham played his drums in the middle of the living room of a house that had high ceilings, they recorded this album in that house. When he played the first notes it set the tone for the drums, it was a natural echo
@@Spamual2 that is only partially true. There is still an echo effect put on. There are videos on UA-cam explaining this, Rick Beato's is probably the best. There is some natural echo because of the space but it's not nearly so pronounced as you can hear on the record. It doesn't have to be all natural for It to still be cool, it can just be a great engineering decision, that's cool too. I don't know why people feel the need to defend apocryphal stories so much.
Thanks for that very interesting info! I LOVE learning things like this---and, may I say: RIP, John Bonham. I watched the Kennedy Center Honors where his son Jason played, and it just melted my Led Zep loving heart !!!!!!
Amen brother. As a drummer myself, from a father who was a drummer... *ALL* I ever wanted was, that when I hit my kick drum, alone, by itself that it would at least resemble the power, body, and echo that Bonham's had.
So this song was a blues song originally recorded in 1929, about the Great Mississippi Flood. Led Zeppelin rearranged for playing with rock instruments, electric guitar etc. This song is where the 1920s blues sound and the 1960s rock and roll sound really fused together into something unique. You can find the original version of the song on UA-cam if you want to give it a listen to compare.

@barcey savik The combination of blues and country & western resulted in rock & roll. The oldest excisting bluesband that I know of must be the Rolling Stones. They had all their black heroes which were their inspiration on stage with them when possible.

This song is a remake of an old country blues song by Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy released in 1929. It’s about the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 that displaced a lot of people, many of who moved to Chicago. Led Zeppelin just turned it into a blues/rock song.
They didn’t just turn it into a blues/rock song, they used their talent to elevate the song. Just like Hendrix did with Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower”. Respect to the original artists, but sometimes the cover elevates the original
I've related this (particular) story numerous times in the comment sections of UA-cam (and here I go again). In October 1968, I was a 21 y/o studying in London. How wrong I was!
Peter Tea-Nicely done. Keep educating the haters that LZ never really stole anything. Thomas Bradley- A cover? Holy shit. Yeah Bonham copied that monster drum sound from Miss Minnie when she laid down the original in 1929.
It's very much a cover. Reinterpretations are exactly what covers are lol. Professional musician here, with education in music history. Led Zeppelin was notorious for ripping off blues artists, especially muddy waters. What's important is that this was not exclusive to led Zeppelin. The Beatles were even more notorious for it. And countless other blues, rock, country, etc... artists. Music back then wasn't protected in the same way it is now. Musicians of color were even worse off. Either way it is a fantastic version of the song. I still can't believe the "it's not a cover" comment 😂🤦🏽♂️. By that explanation then Blue Monday by Orgy isn't a cover, and neither is Alien Ant Farm's "Smooth criminal".... I could make a massive list. Shit torn by Natalie Imbruglia wouldn't be a cover then. I’d like to see y’all react to any Led Zeppelin live. If you dig the recorded stuff as much as it seems you do, it will be a gas watching y’all’s minds melt & the tears of joy flow. For real.
Awesome reaction! They were a legendary rock band very steeped in the blues. I would recommend "Since I've Been Loving You", "You Shook Me", and "The Lemon Song". Then I would recommend "Stairway to Heaven" if you haven't heard it already. Or you can try any one of their other songs. They are all bangers!
First two seconds, stank face ensues. And yeah, it's definitely rock. Zeppelin are definitively rock. Rock comes in many flavors, and stems from many influences, blues being one of the major ones.
You should have seen them live. "When The Levee Breaks" is an old blues song from the 1920's. I've heard is played by street musicians in New Orleans, before Katrina. That town was a whole other scene back then. Keep up the good work!
I love your reactions to this song! Basically the same reaction I had the first time I heard this song back in the '70's when I was in high school. I lifted the needle off the album and was thinking..."woah!!!" then had to start it over to groove that drum riff.
Stairway to Heaven (studio version)‼️ Then checkout some Pink Floyd and Queen to mix in with these Led Zeppelin reactions! 👌 Zep... Robert Plant (lead vocals), Jimmy Page (lead guitar), John Paul Jones (bass guitar), John Bonham (drums) Floyd... Roger Waters (vocals & bass), David Gilmore (lead guitar & vocals), Richard Wright (keyboards & vocals), Nick Mason (drums), Roger Keith “Syd” Barrett (vocals & lead guitar) Queen... Freddie Mercury (lead vocals & piano), Brian May (lead guitar), John Deacon (bass guitar), Roger Taylor (drums) ...Are eternal rock gods and legends and are the pinnacle of rock & roll! Their combined libraries are timeless and contain many of the biggest hits of the era!
I love you guys! Completely serious here! I've been very entertained by watching the two of you react to music that I am very familiar and grew up on. It's absolutely blowing my mind that y'all are digginged Led Zeppelin so much! Well, you both know exactly what great music sounds like. I mean, y'all pick up on quality music so quickly, and I am getting a HUGE kick out of watching it! I can answer all of your questions about ALL of the bands that you have reacted to, but I'll just tell you a little bit about Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant is the vocals for the Band and the entire band is named Led Zeppelin. They're named after the German blimp, called a Zeppelin, first one built in the world and that was just prior to World War 1, around 1912 or so. And, you guys nailed it as far as the genre of music...it is definitely blues, but it's also considered hard rock, in fact, most people consider Led Zeppelin to be the original hard rock band, and they're also considered the best rock band the world will ever see. Jimmy Page is their awesome guitarist, John Bonham (now deceased) was on drums and John Paul Jones is the bassist. They are from England and the song, "Stairway to Heaven" is considered the best rock song of all times. The two of you have literally picked the most famous rock band in the world to like. You should both be very proud of your taste in music and the extraordinary ability to immediately spot greatness. I can also tell you everything you need to know about AC/DC, and Queen. Anywho, I'm a 57 year old ultra cool white dude, just in case you were wondering. Lol Feel free to ask me anything and I could definitely add even more bad ass music to your list. Just let me know! Peace Out!!! 😀😀😀
How great is Zep! ,,,,,, THIS IS THE WAY WE FELT IN THE 70’s with some of the greatest music out there. Even without weed, the music was unreal. At 59 it still hits home every time ya hear it. With a 18 thou song library, I’m never short on raising some great stuff. I’ll throw a few out around the incredible 60,s 70,s music spectrum. As you see these artists were intense.
Jimi Hendrix The Doors Pink Floyd Credence Clearwater Jethro Tull Jim Croce Deep Purple Blue oyster cult Lynard Skynard Ten years after Allman bros. That's all I can off the top of my head.
@@devingarrett5800 Good list, but you forgot a rather big name: The Rolling Stones. Also, The Yardbirds, Cream... basically, any band from Great Britain in the mid to late '60s. Even Jethro Tull started out as a blues band.
I love how you guys say led zeppelin. glad you listened and liked it. Its much more entertaining when you guys dont know what to expect when you go to listen to it. Also, get a mini jack splitter for 2 headphone. Check out Comfortably Numb By Pink Floyd.
The reason it sound so bluesy is because Led Zeppelin and other influential English rock bands of their era who basically created metal as a genre started out playing heavy, electric guitar-driven covers of blues standards, including this one; the son'gs originally from sometime in the 20's if I remember correctly, and it's entirely literal- it's about a flood displacing a bunch of people. The entire metal genre grew out from a handful of Brits who really liked old blues records.
Some background here, the original version was by Kansas City Joe and Memphis Minnie (original version: ua-cam.com/video/swhEa8vuP6U/v-deo.html). Jimmy page wrote a new score, using Memphis Minnie's lyrics to deliver this soulful blues-rock tracks. One of my favorites! Keep up the great work, love you two!
The members of Led Zeppelin grew up listening to blues and as they got older and started playing they took that love and heavied up the sound, mix in some good ol' rock n' roll and a new musical genre was born called "Hard Rock". Through other bands and with time that heavy rock sound evolved into Metal music and a whole bunch of different subgenres. But you could absolutely argue the fact that without blues we wouldn't have Rock (n' Roll) or Hard Rock. And that's the thing I love about music and all of it's strange and beautiful altercations, it's constantly evolving and changing through the influence of everyone that participates, writes and performs. So big ups to both of you for broadening your scope, you'll soon understand that everything is connected to everything in music like a world wide constant collaboration. Keep up the fantastic reactions, Imma subscribe!
theh songs of Zepp vary from blues to rock, some jazzy, some folky sounding, they really dont have solid "style" if you want to hear some rock n roll , check the song "Rock n Roll", it kicks ass and some major drum work i know will light you up! and if you want some serious blues check out "Since Ive been Loving You" that will drag you down hard.

They are all bangers!
lol dead, bruh when he started to light it up. That is what the culture of kids who listened did back in the day
Over The Hill and Far Away next guys! Its dope. Saved me during a bad acid trip 10 years ago 😅
Lol. That must be an interesting story. Zeppelin to the rescue! A great tune that should get more love too.
I've been a Zeppelin fan since the 1980s, and this reaction to WTLB made me very happy. Thank you!!
HAHAHA 10:02 ❤️Led Zep-ahh-lin HAHAHA ❤️mehhh ya all two are so precious 🌺 Going to California would be a nice Reaction next.
I love your reactions to this song! Basically the same reaction I had the first time I heard this song back in the '70's when I was in high school. I lifted the needle off the album and was thinking..."woah!!!" then had to start it over to groove that drum riff.
When the levee breaks mama you got to move.
you two are the sweetest .. welcome to my youth so fun seeing your reactions totally getting it
Stairway to Heaven (studio version)‼️

I love you guys! Completely serious here! I've been very entertained by watching the two of you react to music that I am very familiar and grew up on.
It's absolutely blowing my mind that y'all are digginged
Led Zeppelin so much!
Lol
Feel free to ask me anything and I could definitely add even more bad ass music to your list. Just let me know!
Peace Out!!! 😀😀😀
I love how they say "Led Zeppelin"
Me too it's so cute 😍
Led Zeppa Lean
Some of the best Mississippi Delta Blues ever performed. Hurts so good.
“Mama you got to move!” You guys need to see a live video. Killer guitar, bass, drums, vocals.
You really need headphones for this song. You're missing the way the sound moves around your head and all the finer details of the music.
they dont know about yet...just a hint so far
You mean in your soul!
Quadriphonic
@@johnwesch5926 oh yeah I forgot about how good that sounded back in the day!
Yall r cool af jammin to some zepplin. Glad to see open minded young people still in our country
You'll soon find that most of the best bands from this era were in fact blues based.
Jimi Hendrix
The Doors
Pink Floyd
Credence Clearwater
Jethro Tull
Jim Croce
Deep Purple
Blue oyster cult
Lynard Skynard
Ten years after
Allman bros.
Chris D you forgot Fleetwood Mac
@@chrisd7047 cream yes !

I love you guys man, you just let it go and feel the music, so free. I just signed up!
Guys. It is blues rock. Moreover, rock is based on blues.
Good looooooks
Can you say:
HEADPHONES?
Yeah, this song was engineered by Jimmy Page for headphone listening...
Lawrence Ramirez It's a musical crime not to have headphones
You guys have to do this live version of Led Zeppelin, " Baby, I'm gonna leave you" ua-cam.com/video/fODt3iBXNv4/v-deo.html
Pretty sure that's just the studio version overlayed on a live performance but still a good video.
Original "Baby, I'm gonna leave you" - ua-cam.com/video/OFNpKaxzNMo/v-deo.html
Led Zeppelin is a genre of music all on it's own. I'm enjoying watching you guys enjoying it.
theh songs of Zepp vary from blues to rock, some jazzy, some folky sounding, they really dont have solid "style"
if you want to hear some rock n roll , check the song "Rock n Roll", it kicks ass and some major drum work i know will light you up!
and if you want some serious blues check out "Since Ive been Loving You" that will drag you down hard.
If you want to hear some different Zeppelin take a listen to led Zeppelin III album has a big folk influence to it... I recommend gallows Pole

Long List of Zeppelin. Not a bad song in their entire catalog. There are enough songs to go a month of recordings. i listed some below to help you get started. Or you could go through album by album. Start with Zeppelin 1 and go all the way through.
Trampled Under Foot
Since I Been Loving You
Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
Bron Yr Aur Stomp
Kashmir
10 Years Gone
Stairway to Heaven
Rain Song
Song Remains the Same
No Quarter
Thats the best way to listen. 1st Album, Side 1, Track 1, Track 2, etc until you have heard it all. Then do it all over again.
Bron Yr Aur Stomp is such a gem.
I saw Led Zeppelin in 1977 at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood California. I never looked back from that point, on. Absolutely fantastic group. When this song was played, everyone lost their minds. They were just on another level.
Rage Against The Machine- Down Rodeo
The Blues is Rock N Roll, well a form of it. This band was all about Blue with a Mystical Rock element. They were story tellers. Love you guys..
If yall wanna hear the best of Led Zeppelin's blues side, HIGHLY suggest Since I've Been Lovin You. will damn near make you cry
Live at MSG or the studio version?
@@MsAppassionata both are equally amazing
Hi there, just watched a couple of you listening to my favourite band led zeppelin lyrics CRYING WON'T HELP YOU PRAYING WON'T DO YOU NO GOOD WHEN THE LEVEE BREAKS MAMA YOU GOTTA GO
I would like to see you react to Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir". It is long though.
He's hilarious and she's adorable
Bro!! Headphones!! for real man. They dont even have to be good ones. Just get yall some headphones.
Zep was heavily influenced by American Blues. This song is about a huge flood in Mississippi in 1927. The levee literally broke and flooded the entire area. The song was originally written and done By Memphis Minnie. Zep put their own spin on it and created a kick ass cover. You will hear a Blues influence in a lot of their music.
