After just finishing a full resto, I considered using waterless coolant for the anti corrosion benefit but I just wasn’t sure of the cooling and higher temp aspects.
I ended up using a high quality anti corrosion coolant and demineralised water and will make sure I change it at the correct intervals. I’ve had the car in slow traffic on a 33 degree day (I’m in Sydney Australia) and had no overheating issues so I’m happy with the choice. Thanks for all the great content, cheers.

Cal, I reckon the biggest advantage of waterless coolant is that from my experience the worst engine damage is caused by rapid loss of coolant by burst hoses, pump seals etc. With waterless there's absolutely no pressure in the coolant system, other than circulation pressure, within the operating temperature range meaning that hoses, seals will maintain integrity. The small rise in baseline operating temperature is insignificant, and in some cases beneficial.

Drawing the model is more difficult but the 3d scanner has you covered! Although I have no personal experience with waterless coolants, I have heard (probably on Jay Leno's channel), that their heat transfer capability is lower than water's. Their great virtue is being non-corrosive, so they're ideal for collection cars that spend more time sitting than running. They don't eat the motor.
The fillers on the Camaro are beautiful, but their symmetry is worrying. Murphy's ability to cause confusion is almost unlimited. Sooner or later, if fillers are even faintly similar, someone will put the wrong fluids in them. Do you have a way to prevent that? (Different shapes for the caps, flip vs screw caps. or WHY?) The history of aviation is replete with incidents of mistaken fitting processes, despite continuous evolution of attempts at precluding them.

Ned, on the price of good tools; what should we expect? I mean, there are two zeros in the name and we haven't even asked the price! A "tool truck guy" in my dim past strapped that on me when I dithered over his baubles and bangles. Hello, Matt; you look to have some of the talents that make this place what it is; if you show a hand, I'll bet they would let you try your hand as some of the rest. Nice work on the door, Tom; back when I knew that tool guy, I was working for a dealer in New Orleans flogging that very car; every one we took out of the Free Trade Zone had some of the sins you and Matt are remanufacturing for. The Big MOPAR engine was bullet proof, or nearly so. Most folks who buy a 2200 kilo sports car aren't serious drag racers.

If waterless coolant ran the engine significantly cooler, or if (wc) was a better heat conductor than a typical anti-freeze mixture, I guess it would probably have some merit. (I’m not sure why using water is supposed to be bad?)🤔

As always enjoying your weekly updates.
On the topic of waterless coolant. I used it in my 74 E-type for a couple of reasons, but mainly because the heads are prone to develop hotspots, which leads to evaporation and subsequent valve seats dropping and head warping. Needles to elaborate on the consequences of either.
My real life experience of waterless coolant saving my engine, was when a fuse had blown. A fuse that supplied both the fans and the temp gauge. After about 10-15 minutes in slow moving traffic the reality dawned on me and I was able to get away and on to the motorway, get up to speed and cool the engine somewhat. The end result was that the engine was saved, but based on the subsequent oil smoke on overrun, one or more valve stem seals must have been damaged.

Cal, hear hear on the waterless coolant.
It does do what the makers claim, namely not boil and contains no water to corrode components.
However, straight ethylene glycol is not as effective as water at either absorbing or releasing heat.
There is data out there on trucking fleets where the engine suppliers need to raise the switch on point for the cooling fans to prevent them running all the time when using waterless coolant.
I'm certainly with you, I see no need to make any of my vehicles run hotter than originally intended.
It's a fairly simple affair to maintain a healthy cooling system.

Is there no limit to your developing CNC expertise? A while ago I think Ford had a way of making cylinders heads by reducing the design to lots of layers which were then assembled on dowel pins and clamped together and heat treated to diffusion weld the layers into a solid mass. Maybe some out there can add more to this?

I used waterless coolants and found their viscosity was lower meaning you needed to have extra pumping effort to keep the flow. That and the expense has meant I don’t bother with them. Not needed unless the cooling system is close on the limit anyhow.

Waterless Coolant, aside from the lower freezing and higher boiling points, there's no oxygen in it so there's no risk of corrosion and the entire cooling system runs at a much lower pressure because it doesn't expand as it heats up, so less chance of any leaks from hoses or anywhere else in the cooling system.
Let's face it if you're a keen enough motorist to commission a bespoke car from Retropower I'm pretty certain you'll keep an eye on your gauges.

@@rachnmat4080 actually it's use by many race teams, the engine will be cooled in exactly the same way it would be with a traditional water antifreeze mix, the advantages are that it doesn't expand when it heats so your cooling system is no longer under pressure and there's no oxygen in it so there's no possibility of corrosion, yes it's expensive but as long as you're leak free there's no need to change it.
If you car is constantly overheating then there's something wrong with the system, faulty fan thermostat, faulty fan, clogged radiator, broken pump etc.

    • @jdoe9518
      @jdoe9518 8 місяців тому

"it's use by many race teams", in your second comment, is not a true representation of cooling system approach at a professional level.
Real race teams use cooling systems up to 100 psi with deminerialised de-ionised water. 100 psi raises the boiling point of water to 168 degrees Celsius. Oxygen on its own is not going to exist in this environment. High pressure high temperature cooling systems remove the two main issues of localised "hot spots" and cavitation.
Cooling systems are required to deal with the heat the ICE inefficiencies are unable to turn into work from fuel. Low pressure low temp is the wrong direction on every level.

Re: Waterless coolants: I did not know they had a higher boiling point, my understanding was for the benefits of corrosion protection, particularly in old iron blocks that are probably sitting around un-run for large parts of their life. I've seen blocks eaten through from water based coolant sitting and rusting it's way through from the coolant passages out.
Jay Leno, for instance, says he keeps waterless in all of his cars for that reason.
