Poor guy has had to retell that story so many times for the last 47 years. I hope that this is the last time that he has to verbally remember it. You can tell that he will never get over this. Rodney, you were instrumental in getting justice for Carla. I hope that that gives you some peace.

Not sure why people are replying to your compassionate message with such insensitivity. He certainly WAS instrumental, and you are being very kind. He fought for her and told what happened to her. Before the DNA came up in 2020. That's how they found the magazine, and how they knew to start looking for her. I echo your comment. Rest in peace, Carla and her parents, and yes, peace to Rodney and her remaining siblings, family, and friends. I read that her mom suffered with depression until her death. And her poor dad, knowing the last thing she said to Rodney was "Go tell my dad". Every dad wants to protect their child, just like every boyfriend would want to protect their girlfriend.

He's not married either, I watched another video, talking to Carla's brother, and he said Rodney never got over what happened, that he blamed himself for not stopping the animal that took her, that he should have done more, but he was just a kid, who had a gun pointed in his gave, and the trigger pulled 3 times. That animal meant to kill both of them! But Rodney did the best thing he could in that situation, and he was _instrumental_ in putting that animal away. Hopefully now he, Carla's family, and Carla, can finally be at peace. I believe a new bill was passed in her name, so she will never be forgotten, and her bill will help hundreds is families her justice for their loved ones, and Rodney is a part of that. Hopefully that helps them all, even if it's just a little❤

@@FischerFanThe average husband does not do this because his wife isn't available for sex on his anniversary. This man was a sadistic monster. They really need to look at any Jane Doe deaths and unsolved rape cases in a 60 mile radius of Ft Worth. From the time that killer was a teenager until they arrested him for Carla's murder! There's no telling how many women he killed.

  • @pattykelly11

At 17 she was out celebrating Valentine's Day as SO MANY of us have done as teenagers. It's stories like this that make you realize NOW as parents that EVIL EXISTS even in our small, tight knit little communities. 4' 11" Carla didn't stand a chance against this kind of EVIL. He wasn't crying for Carla during his interview, he was crying bc he had been CAUGHT as a 75+ yr old man and was FINALLY going to serve whatever amount of life he had left to serve. So unfair that he walked the streets amongst Carla's family, friends, and Rodney. Hearing her last words go get my dad will be forever etched into his memory. Idk if Rodney had a family after all of this but I can't imagine if he had a daughter the lengths he went to, to protect her from such EVIL. At least now Carla will forever rest in peace as her killer has been brought to justice. If you can call 50 years FREE amongst society justice😔🙏

First, he had a gun pointed at him. Unbelievably, it didn't go off. Then, he was pistol-whipped. He could've passed out and bled to death right there in his own car.
I have no doubt he counts his blessings and thanks someone every day that he survived to have the opportunity to tell his story to expose the monster in court all these years later. I also have no doubts of his sincerity that he would've paid the ultimate price to bring Carla back to her family.
What was supposed to be enjoyable evening for two young lovers became a nightmare that would change his life and so many others forever. He has been forced to re-live that nightmare time and time again. He will forever remember February 17th, 1974 (possibly at around 12:20 a.m.) as a traumatic experience.
I have no doubts that the perpetrator had been leading an evil double life before he took Carla's and left Rodney's so badly marked. He is a serial killer who has other victims. Perhaps he was a wannabe Texas version of the Zodiac killer!
He may also been influenced by negative, cultural influences such as movies like, 'The Last House on the Left', which was released not even two years before he committed this crime.

I hope that, now the animal that did that to Carla was caught and found guilty, the family, _including_ Rodney, will be able to find some peace, and maybe some closure. Although "closure" is never want you want and hope it to be, because your loved one still got hurt, you still lost them. A guilty verdict doesn't make them come back, or the pain of losing them go away. And you can see that night still haunts this poor man to this day. For her it must have been a nightmare. For Rodney I’m sure it’s been a nightmare for all these years and the feeling of guilt that he couldn’t save her. Plus people would have thought he did it. You have mum and dad wow now that’s every parents nightmare. You have 12 year old little brother and her sister that go through this all these years. Just put yourself in one of these family or boyfriends shoes and it’s a nightmare. Unbelievable.

Yes. I was 16 when this happened. My cousin went to school with Carla. Parents were frightened for their daughters. It happened just a little over a mile from a very popular mall that was a hangout. The bowling alley where she was abducted was popular, as well. Parents lectured their daughters about being safe whenever they went near that area.

The bowling alley was a popular hangout, there was a swimming pool there too. But the mall wasn’t built until the late 70’s, a few years after this happened.

Back when this happened, there was a lot of similar attacks on teens around the country, almost like a cult thing. We had 2 similar attacks in this county. One was a Air force GI that murdered a local girl and dumped the body in the woods close to his base. He was a known suspect in the disappearance. When the body was found a month later the MP's took care of him, never heard from again. Another a few years later, a teen couple returning from a school sponsored Basket ball game were run off the road and kidnapped. Their bodies were discovered a few days later after a massive community search. Both were tied to a tree and brutally tortured and stabbed to death. The suspect was identified but never convicted but was in prison later for the same type attack where the lady escaped and fingered him. He would always call and harass the parents of the teens from prison and harass them for years after, but the corrections officials never intervened. Before the perp was arrested, there were several reports of a strange car running the back roads and trying to run people off the road, almost happened to my oldest sister when returning from work a few times, but we taught her to not stop for any reason, likely saved her from the same fate! Another one several years later, a young couple often went fishing on a public water way. the perp was fishing there as well and befriended them all day till they went to leave, he then pulled a weapon and did the old tie to a tree stunt to supposedly rob them. All for a few bucks the kid had and his fishing gear! Killed them and went to a tavern and tried to rob that place. the barman not having it got his bar gun and blasted the hell out of the perp and made him flee. He had just gotten out of prison a few weeks prior. Recall this was about the time of the Manson murders in California, copycats?

Me and my sibling went to school with Rodney and Carla. That was an amazing year of new beginnings but after this incident school became something like a prison. We did not know who the killer was and where they were. I can say one thing for sure Rodney's race is what saved him from being charged, prosecuted, sentenced, and sent to prison for 48 years. He would have served all of that time then the authorities would have discovered that he was innocent. All of that if he had been a black man. Same for McCurley, he would have been tracked down shot and killed or given the death penalty had he been a black man. Think about. I love all of my high school classmates. And it hurts everytime I think about Rodney and Carla's young adulthood life experiences. Noone should have to experience such devastating terror in a time which is just the beginning of life. I pray that God heals and restore Rodney. And I hope that Carla met Jesus in her dying hour. Then she took a hold to Jesus and went home with him. God specializes in culverts and tombs. He roll the stone away and he raised Jesus out of that grave. So, he can do the same for Carla. Then she will live again and so shall she forever be with the Lord.. 💐 💐 💐
    Amen!

@@georgewagner7787 Unfortunately the rapist/murderer might have been sexually aroused by what he saw going on in the car. I can't help but wonder if things might have been different if they had just been sitting there talking. They would have been a little more alert at least when they got surprised by the attacker. They wouldn't have been falling out of the car with Rodney's head exposed.
