  • There’s a San Francisco garden growing more than just produce. In a city plagued by homelessness, the Farming Hope Initiative offers urban farming and cooking training to those without a place to live. The program aims to give participants skills that can lead to full-time employment, and it hosts weekly dinners that bring together people experiencing homelessness and the wider community. These shared meals are an invitation to dialogue, empathy and some delicious-looking tacos.

    This is how “helping the homeless”videos should be on UA-cam, not giving them money to fish out a reaction, praise and sympathy.

      As a former homeless person I can attest to how these kind of "programs" are usually run.....I can bet you dollars to donuts that the homeless here either are not being paid at all or are paid a pittance for their labor in return for "job training".
      Meanwhile the owners reap a profit on free or low cost labor and loads of government and private grant money.........duping tons of "socially conscious" customers who think they are doing good thing.
      Poverty Inc in action.

      +Daniel Herrera In any case, those meals were very much lacking in the protein they need to recover from strenuous work. Especially the older folks. If they're making money they can afford to give the workers some meat or something.

    • @DanielHerrera-he9no
      @DanielHerrera-he9no 6 років тому

      Michael Sherman That is because they are hipster dreamer types who live in a world of unicorns and rainbows and have a weak grasp of the problem they are dealing with(homelessness). They don't understand realities like nutrition.
      They sincerely believe they can save all people in San Fran from homelessness by teaching them all how be Instagram Trendy Biodynamic Permaculture Beyond Organic Aquaponic Urban Farmers and Pintrest Fabulous Raw Vegan Farm To Table Food Truck Chefs.
      That's why they are teaching them this nonesense rather than actual marketable trades that are in demand or helping them go to college to get a nicer paying job.
      That is not cool and hip enough!
      In the end this kinda of thing does more harm than good.

    This is not completely clear to me. It leaves me wondering: Do these homeless wake up from their cardboard box on the sidewalk and go work, get fed, and then back to the cardboard box on the street to sleep at night? Is there no farm where people sleep (like cowboys on a ranch), eat, work and live?

  • @aldralee

    I work with homeless folks in Los Angeles. The restaurant industry is one of the few that will hire folks with troubled pasts. So, the practical skills in the kitchen are great, but the gardening and dining aspects are beautiful. My heart!

  • @DanielHerrera-he9no
    @DanielHerrera-he9no 6 років тому

    Nice sentiment but this program doesn't really help that much....if your not a celebrity chef restaurant work is some of the lowest wage work around. It is a brutal business. Same with agriculture. Not gonna get off the streets picking vegetables for a living.
    Teaching low wage job skills to people is not gonna do much good for the homeless in San Francisco when you can't even afford to rent a closet working 80 hour weeks on a minimum wage salary there.
    People need housing they can afford.

    As the saying goes "Teach a Man To Fish, and You Feed Him for a Lifetime", this is great for San Francisco! However, the problem is, not all homeless people want to work and not all of them are and others are addicted to drugs. Why work, when tourist can just give you a buck. Stack up all the money and they probably make more than an average minimum wage work. Not to mention, rising housing prices, expensive food, etc. Point is, it great that the FHI is doing this, it just... there also other things that causes these problems. One step at a time thought. So progress. I guess.

      Do you have statistics about homeles people not wanting to work?
      Also, you can work but still homeless.

    • @shamilarifeen380
      @shamilarifeen380 6 років тому

      lenny mcready While i do not have the statistics, this is true in some cases. While others want to work and go forward in life, there are those that would rather prefer to beg and earn. They've not only become used to it now but they actually earn a lot more begging than a minimum wage job/jobs

    • @blehbleh8143

      @shamilarifeen380 6 років тому

      lenny mcready Maybe you didn't bother to properly read my comment! I mentioned very clearly that i don't have statistics. But the comment that started this thread is true. He says that while there are hard workers who are homeless due to economic and other problems there is also this mentality that exists among a significant number of homeless people. If you want exact numbers please google or go conduct a census
