My Church was randomly doing this with a lot we bought a while ago. Currently we donate over 3 tons of food every 6 months from that garden.

+Joshua Walters Just stop all funding for all diseases, especially those that kill millions per year in some continent , and your population problem is solved immediately. No more population growth. WHO should be canceled. Let Ebola ravage the entire continent, half of all air travel are banned as a result, many national borders closed. Best of all , after so many people are killed, global warming is also stopped due to the dramatic canceling of large portion of of transportation.
We need to let more people die. Why do you think nature makes human live shorter than turtles and lobsters and a host of lower level clam lives. Constantly dying makes our species healthy as a whole. The more you want people to live, the weaker you make the people, and the more diseases you get.

It's edible, tasty, easy to grow, can grow anywhere, nutritious, easily modifiable genetically, and is perfect for hydroponic farming.
And can be used to make oil.

I think the best way would be to atleast start growing the veggies, we consume more often, right in our backyards. And these indoor/backyard farming lessons should be practically taught in schools by encouraging children to grow their own food at home.
Not gonna happen in places run by dormers. They would rather scavenge for bugs.
This playlist has given me so much hope for the future of our existence on the planet. It is so easy these days to get bogged down with the doom and gloom of climate change and misuse of land and resources, but this playlist has offered up so many creative, innovative and seemingly do-able solutions! Thank you for restoring my faith in humanity! Keep up the great work! This is better than GOOD STUFF!
Obviously there is still so much work to be done, but I think it's best to look to the future of food with a feeling of hope!
Mostly what makes a city hotter is concrete and asphalt that stores the Sun's heat energy and slowly releases it.

"Because we have given up access to our food system, we've lost a lot of those skills" - incredibly insightful, and it applies to every area of our lives, not just food. We don't live our own lives anymore - we are dependents of a system, and that not only takes away efficiency, it takes away our freedom.
I shy away from advocating Malthus. If we live in a healthy harmony with nature, we will never overpopulate the earth, and the idea of control from above becomes as useless to us as it is ridiculous.
I disagree it's instinctual. It's a learned skill. It not hard just labor intensive.
A while ago my wife suggested that we should get some chickens. Living in a second floor apartment, I asked her where we'd keep them; she replied immediately with, "On the roof!" This became something of a family joke ("How will we keep a cow on the roof, with all the chickens up there, eh?") but I'm slightly terrified to tell her about this playlist...

chickens on the roof is possible, i've seen it done. no cockerels though. lol
Watch a bunch of Green City Acres videos them find a vacant lot or back yard of a friends house and GROW some food.

Hello! I'm relatively new to the Wheezy Waiter channel. I've gone back and watched most of your posts for about the past two months. I stumbled upon this channel one day watching Crashed Course: U. S. Politics (which is fantastic!). Just wanted to show some love; keep up the good work! Oh yea, I really enjoyed this video. I love when people with access to large audiences make an effort (no matter how small) to inform and encourage people to be more thoughtful, especially when the topic is so grand that it impacts the entire human race and our species' future. We mistakenly allowed big corporations for profit to control our food supply.
Very good information on this video like we don't need to grow a lot of bad nutritious food but grow less healthy food thus save land, time, water and other resources.

1) It's such a great hopeful outlook on a our terrible food habits in the US. People are at the for front of making a big difference in agriculture! I love the idea of working in one of these local farms to help your community.
2) This playlist made me also very, VERY proud of The Good Stuff! You guys are making such wonderful videos. I was explaining to my roommate what this video was about, and I was getting quite passionate about it and in the end I let out a satisfied sigh and said "It's good stuff." It was unintentional, but so undeniably true!

!!! This is right up my alley! I'm a Community Health major and had to research a local neighborhood of my city and study the health of that community. I chose the Near Eastside of Indianapolis and I learned that it's a massive food desert- many people don't have convenient transportation to food and grocery stores are very few and far in between. I learned of a group called Growing Places Indy that rose up to fill that gap. They have food gardens planted all over the city and even on some hospital roofs, too! People can go as far as the local high school and pick their own produce and food stamps are accepted. They also give a lot of their produce to local grocery stores, restaurants, and food pantries. Urban agriculture is SO important to cities, especially to impoverished areas and those with little access to grocery stores.

There is no way. Stunning! I was fascinated by the idea of vertical farming and now one the LARGEST vertical farms ever conceived is being built in the city I travel to everyday? That's insane. Why haven't I heard of this sooner?
They need to do this in the UK! Any urban areas with any land for sale can only be built on due to it being brown belt land - but this system would work well! But these places would need high level securities due to the amount of crime in the areas and I wonder how many local people it would employ. These places would be great for educating children though! Many inner city children think milk, eggs and vegetables etc come from the supermarket! 🙈
I refuse to believe they think that. They probably think the supermarket is the only way to get them but everyone knows where a egg comes from.

I remember when I was young my cousin from NYC came to visit our grandfather's farm in OK and she wouldn't drink the fresh milk because it wasn't in a box.

My biggest concerns are big city air & water pollution affecting the crops.
Stephen Kong What about doing what was done during both World Wars, the government encouraged people to grow their own food in their gardens when they were gathering rations for the military. If the government encouraged people to grow their own crops in their gardens but this time not for war reasons, we be more productive and rely less on major food Corporations, but that is just an idea.
You should never motivating people by appealing to their morals. It would never work. Demand and Supply is the only driving force of people actions.

certainly a great idea would love to see this where I live, either just a community farm or just something to pretty the unused area's up and open up some food for animals and create some food sources for animals like humming birds and butterflies, and other migratory species.

Well the fact that the Netherlands (as a very small country) is the 2nd largest agricultrural exporter shows that its not only about surface, but mainly how you use it. The Netherlands is very densely populated but we don't need urban farming to be the 2nd largest agricultural exporter.

One small addition: Cities are mainly hotter because of the urban heat island effect. A lack of vegetation and an increase in impervious surfaces like concrete and buildings causes cities to release more solar radiation into the air. If rooftops, medians, sidewalks, parking lots and yards are converted into edible landscapes, more heat will be used by the plants to grow our food instead of increasing our air conditioning bills.

Malthus also thought we were hitting a brick wall in terms of food production. Boy was he wrong! I don't think we're near that next hurdle yet, but we're sure to overcome it. I don't see this in particular as a solution, but there's no harm in it for sure.
+Jager Mitchell Plus there's a lot of benefits besides just making food. These lots will not be used to produce more pollution (they are cleaning some instead). Plus it provides people with good exercise and fresh, healthy food.

seigeengine Alright, I literally said "I don't see this in particular as a solution, but there's no harm in it for sure," which, if you read with your eyes and interpret it with that thing behind them, means the same thing.
I hate to break it to everyone, but the simplest way to solve this problem is for everyone to cut down on meat and dairy consumption. It is far more efficient to eat the crops you grow than to feed them to an animal and eat the animal produce. This would not only be the more ethical option, it would also help to reduce the number of cases of obesity and malnutrition. Furthermore, considerably less greenhouse gases would be emitted if everyone had a more plant-based diet.
Since space is an issue, why not plant on building rooftops?

For any of you that want to grow in the city: BE CAREFUL.
Test your soil first. Pollution may have contaminated it with heavy metals and other things that are bad for your health. Many local universities will do free testing. If it is tainted, build a raised bed that's at least a foot deep (or deeper, for root veggies) and line the bottom with landscping felt.
During WWII the British Government had a campaign called Dig for Victory, which encouraged people to grow food in their gardens, the result was a significant improvement in food independence and public health.
Maybe this is my Midwest farm adjacent upbringing but I this I have enjoyed this playlist the best. Did you do find anything on ocean based farming in the research. This is something I would hear about when I was a kid and never seemed to go anywhere that I know of but maybe this is in the works.

Thanks plenty of heavenly rain water for our plants but all our beloved washed away. I lived nearby then but our area was spared. Hands for members who went thru this and many floods. Potong Pasir had its fair share. The Veggie Farms had their crops washed away. The fish farms lost all their Tilapias. Bukit Timah would flood with 1/2 hour rain .

Just think of all the potential farmland in people's back yards. What if 70% of everyone that has a backyard had a vegetable garden or a small greenhouse? Or if we used fruit and nut trees to decorate our streets. What if, instead of raking our leaves and then bagging them up and sending them to a landfill, we put them in a compost barrel around back and then used that soil for our landscaping instead of going to HomeDepot and buying soil for that purpose? Most of us could do a little better and I think thats all it would take to get us back on track.

I question why sports stars are being given recognition and medals when people doing good works like urban farming are only rarely recognized, and almost never by government. These people should be our new heroes.
City farm can do this because they got something that nobody else in Chicago has. Government gave them free lots, lack of regulation, and free from taxes. Basically removing all the obstacles that other cities impose on the majority of their people, so they can run their business.
