All you need to know about this song; When Blue October frontman Justin Furstenfeld was 28, he started getting his life back together and making amends to the people he hurt as a result of his drug addiction. His mother is featured in the video, which is an honest portrayal of what he put her through.
Justin Furstenfeld's vocals on this song are compelling in that his voice is so direct, so ready for you to know that yes, he is not infallible, and he can admit it. He wrote this song, he says, as a sort of harsh reality check; a peek into how a man can be damagingly selfish in a relationship, and then look in a mirror and admit his mistakes while coming to terms with his own behavior. "It's like, let me just kind of clue you in on what it feels like in my own brain," he offers on his MySpace In a promotional video, Furstenfeld said of this song: "When you're in a low place, you don't really think about other people, and it's basically an apology to the people you've hurt in the past and giving them advice that maybe you're not the best person to be hanging out with. It's an apology to people I've hurt in the past, and asking for forgiveness. Some of the issues I was going through."
In the album version of this song, it starts with an answering machine message where the singer's mother is asking if he is OK. Also, the music video shows videos of his mother taking care of him by doing everything from helping him when he is drunk to taking pictures of him and a girlfriend, and the video ends with him visiting a grave. This indicates that the song could be about all his mother did for him and what he could have done for her.
Playback asked Furstenfeld if his mother minded being immortalized on the answering machine message. The singer replied: "That had to be done. I was at a point when I was recording that it was the worst of my worst. She hadn't heard from me in quite a while and I got that message and I realized what I was doing to my family. I realized the selfishness in addiction; I hadn't talked to my mom in months. She was calling and that's the exact message, and that's when it clicked in my mind: It's not just me anymore. These people love you; they raised you."

Awesome love it when more people discover blue october. Their discography has a bit of a long story arc to it. The lead singer justin furstenfeld struggles with severe bipolar disorder and used to have addiction issues. Their earlier albums were about his mental state at the time and as he started getting better the music starts reflecting the change in later albums. There's hiccups like the fifth album is dedicated to his messy divorce from.his first wife and the ugly custody battles and that causes his addiction issues to worsen before he got better. So to get a sense of the journey i'll recommend some songs in chronological order.
Black orchid, for my brother, into the ocean, angel, schizophrenia, ugly side, razorblade, picking up pieces, blue does, the worry list, the feel again stay, sway, angels in everything, fear, home, i hope you're happy, fight for love.

Love the reaction! One of my favorite bands. Hope you explore more of their music. The song is actually an apology to a woman from years back. I did you wrong, I'm sorry, and now please forget me. Do whatever you have to, to forget me. Even if that means hating me. The video is done as an apology to his mom and it's his mom who has died. In real life she is still alive.

He can't deal with the guilt from all the things he has done in the heat of addiction and his struggle with mental illness. That message his mother left him on the machine just brings reminds him that she was always there for him no matter how dark things got and he just wants her to "hate him" so she can focus on herself and find peace. The guilt is so enormous when he thinks that his actions stopped someone from happiness

I'm so infatuated with British female voices , maybe it's a mutual thing hearing American accents. As a young American Lad I've always imagined living in a loft in the British farmlands. Subbed love your reactions and your British accent!

he choose suicide so his mom can rest assured peacefully, yes it was selfish of him but he did whatever he thought was best for his mom, in the video he is walking down the stairs and you see his mom holding him, he says with a side heart i say bye to you and waved, and hes walking out the door think of it he is going into the light when exiting the house, cause he thinks he fixed it and his mom says how can you do this to me, its really noticeable in the video. He wanted his mom to be happy. My assumption was that he fell back into his old ways cause of addiction. He just didn't want her seeing him struggle throughout it. Just piece the video visualize it first and tell me you see it how i do the song is so emotional but when he is singing it you can feel hes not only singing it but feeling it in emotions like its actually happened and this is his sorry to her through music video and how he truly actually feels. Just visualize it and listen to the real actual emotions in his voice seriously ❤😢 Also, the tape recorder he's holding through the video im assuming hes recording his reasons why he what he did and thats why at the end places it on his grave then you see it back inside what im assuming the families house, which leaves you to belive she heard it and thats where it'll stay thats what im assuming 😢😢

I swear that I never wanted to be disrespectful, but given the lyrics and the video, it should have been obvious that it was about his mom. I just think maybe you put your own story into it. That’s it. However you couldn’t be more wrong about the song, “artist”.
