He wrote this as an apology to his Mother, Family and Friends for the things he put them through while battling substance abuse. At one point his Mom called his Brother to check on him. His Brother went to his hotel room literally expecting to find a dead body.

Basically he wants his mother to not worry about him so much. because she is always worried about him she is not able to live her own life, because he feels that he cannot find it within himself to free her from that worry. just paraphrasing. so.... Hate me if you have to if it means that you can be happy again..

Justin even held AA meetings online during covid, and took calls from viewers , in interviews, that's a real message from his mum, and this how much damage he done beginning off his face all the time, losing touch with reality, so selfish so addicted, he'd prefer her to hate him than deal with his addiction, depression and anxiety, he's a hero to so many people, he's a success story instead of a biography, he was a drugged up mess, and he tried to push everyone away, no, she's not dead, he was 💞💞💞💞👍.

Fun Fact: That is actually Justin's (the lead singer and the writer of this song) and Jeremy's (the drummer - they're brothers) mom in the video playing herself. The song was written about the effects of his addiction and mental illness on his relationship with his first love, Mamie. The message you hear from Justin's mom at the beginning of the song was the message that finally reached him at his rock bottom. He hadn't talked to her for months and hearing her recorded message made him start to see the selfishness of his addiction. The video is more a tribute to her to show her that he realizes what he put her thru and how scary it must've been for her. 🖤
8 years off heroin last month and this song has a special place in my recovery! 🖤

First time I heard this song, I was driving and I had to pull over because I started bawling. I had just gotten out of a very abusive relationship and was trying to get clean also. This song hit me right in the heart and I plan to have the lyrics: "While I was busy waging wars on myself, you were trying to stop the fight." tattooed on me at some point. Almost 13 years clean and sober and this sing still hits hard. Awesome choice.

This is probably one of my favorite reactions to this song which I feel is so underrated. Kudos for that! Also im new here but I wonder if you ever did any MCR, specifically My Chemical Romances Black Parade or Helena (Though Na na na na na or Sing are equally great and those two music videos go back to back and the end of Sing goes directly into the lead singers, Gerard Way, graphic novel.
The story behind MCR is Gerard Way was in NYC to meet a publisher for his comics when he witnessed 9/11. All of the feelings he went through he wanted to help others with and thus formed MCR, though I paraphrased a little.

The p*rno line is hard for me to wrap my head around too. But from what I can gather after listening to this song for a decade; He is hurt by the memories he had of her, it tears him apart continuously until he feels numb. So those memories make him feel distant, so distant, that a p*rno feels more comforting/like home.

This song amazes me still every time I hear it. This is the embodiment of someone realizing that the only way his loved ones can be happy again is to hate him. If you think about it, none of us are hurt in any way when someone you hate experiences hardship of some sort. He realizes that his behavior has been extremely hurtful to everyone around him, but especially those closest to him--his mother. At the end of the song, he is shown going to his mother's grave. I think this part more symbolizes the side of his mother that he had been so egregious to, rather than his mother as a whole. He's just burring the toxic relationship. We can defer that from the fact that she is still alive today. He's only burying the poor relationship and leaves the answering machine at the cemetery as the last remnant of that lifestyle and thereby shedding all the drama from his life.

It’s funny how people view music differently. It seems to me going back to me this whole head bopping started with the off brand music of the 80’s that effected R&B that became rap that changed music into being about the instrumentals instead of the lyrics. If I listen to instrumental music I listen to Mozart. If rock or country it’s songs with meaning that makes you think, that I can listen too without a single instrument. Anyway, I just noticed how people perceive music differently. I guess it’s when you came up. I can close my eyes and listen and block out the drums and focus on the words only. My wife and daughter are always bopping as they call it like you. I just can’t think of any genre that makes me want to bang my head. Lol

Its like the addict is apologizing for thier addiction but knows they have to stay away from each other. Imo it's an apology to someone you live for your addiction. Family or friend

Others have already mentioned the meaning behind the lyrics. At least as of the video, his mom was still living. If I remember right, that was her at the end.
Some other songs of theirs worth checking out "Fear" "The Worry List" "Calling You"

I've heard that when someone that plays the guitar is singing a deep song that they will splice their fingers either with a blade or just from playing without a pic . A form of passionate suffrage I guess you can say

React to SOS by Dimash Kudaibergen, slaavic Baazar version. It might be something different than what you usually listen to but his voice is amazingly out of this world. The best vocalist out there right now.
