The problem with all the rule changes is that it’s given the offense too much advantage. Players didn’t want to go over the middle because they’d get clocked, not to injure players really, but to create turnovers. Today’s NFL is just a shell of its former self.

@@futuretimetraveller8677 - Back during this timeframe there are only a handful of QB's I can think of who played into their late 30's as a starter. Fran Tarkington, Roger Staubach (Though his missed a lot of years serving the country), and I don't really count Billy Kilmer. Both Tarkington and Staubach were Mobile QB's and would take off and run. Brady would have taken a lot of punishment which does not bode well for longevity.

Sitting here watching this video with my Mike Curtis jersey on, I wholeheartedly concur with you. I've even got the video paused on that clip. On one hand, I understand the rationale of trying to protect players from legitimately potential serious injury, but if you are aware of that risk and still agree to play by those rules, then que sara. For sure, all of the rule changes in favor of the offense have made modern stats pretty hollow. That particular play is a clear example of how much American culture has changed -- Gabriel didn't whine and complain, and Curtis didn't run looking for a camera to wiggle and prance in front of.

i remember being taught how to tackle just like that IN POP WARNER football---sound fundamentals so ...the arm tackling and other stuff i see pros doing now (when i catch a glimpse ---i do NOT watch games) is hilarious to me

Back when men played the game and they could hit the quarterback without 5 yellow flags flying through the air. They even got muddy back then....wow

Back then as long as you were within two full steps of the QB when he threw the ball you could still lay him out. Within two steps at full speed the tackler was considered to be committed and because of the momentum he would unable to pull up ....

THIS is what real football fans love... not just about the QB throwing touchdown passes. The NFL from the 2000's on up has become ridiculous.

Fantastic video quality. The classy jazz and orchestra scores work great, too. These highlights are from back in the days when QBs did not wear skirts. Hitting high, clothesline tackles, forearm shivers, regular muggings ... all part of the game. The zebras said, "Let 'em play."

Beautiful color and the film quality looks like it was shot yesterday. This is the type of footage everyone knew NFL Films had, but never showed. All ya need to do is wrote up some inspiring lines, get a John Facenda AI narrator and we could get more of what we always wanted. NFL Films of the 1970s early 80s. Thanks for posting this stuff Dave and hope u can keep them coming.

    GREAT JOB DAVE!!
When the NFL was THE NFL!!
One of the hardest hits I ever saw didn't occur between two players.
Before the days of portable, lightweight cameras, they used to have those BIG CAMERAS that put on platforms that made them three or four feet tall.
A receiver for the Saints (Billy Grabarkewicz) jumped up to catch a pass, missed, and cracked his helmeted head on the camera.
The blow caused his helmet to split in two, and, I believe he had to leave the game with a concussion.😮😮😮
