_Crazy_ to me that AOE2 still sees development. Conqueror's was one of the earliest games I worked on, so the series has seen development longer than my entire ~20 year industry career! At Microsoft I was part of the "RECON" team that was basically a centralized playtesting team providing feedback on many games that went through MS Games at the time. It surprised me that a friend from that team actually ended up working on AOE2: HD Edition in ~2013 (he was at Hidden Path Entertainment at the time).

Age of Empires 2 DE should have more violence and blood. I hope small updates in that direction will come. I also want to see skeletons on the ground, they are important to create an atmosphere. In addition what I do not like in Age Of Empires 2 DE: 1) They removed sounds of agony when a unit dies. 2) They removed corpse decomposition! Instead, the corpse is slowly falling deep underground, which is bad. 3) If a bowman or a spearman misses, the projectiles are no longer visible on the ground. 4) There is not enough blood!!! Jan 2021 and this makes me so happy to know this remastered version came out. Thanks for the review it’s been about 15 years since I played going to download it now!
Yeah, the shift queuing was always in the game. If I'm not mistaken though, DE only added a quicker, simplified method that doesn't require you to release shift before issuing that final command, like in Blizzard's RTS games.
5) The AI?? It could still be improved but it is acceptable. I am a programmer myself so I know how difficult it is to create a great AI. As for the rest of the game, it is easily 10/10 remaster. I hope that the game will be updated.
I started playing with game since AOE first came out....I was litterally on it from sunrise to sun down on weekends and after school till bedtime for weeks....it was that good. now with kids i hadnt played in years but the nostalgia brought me back...love this game!
One advice, great review by the way, but to give your words a huge bonus in power, try to match the video with what you are saying. Like the part with shift-click. You selected the scout, but there is no shift-clicky... 7:20. More detailed is the 9:15 part, where you show the farmers doing a different routine. But what is the standard routine? I didn't see what the ai did differently. A tip: you should not overlook these things, but adress thm in detail :) Thanks by the way. Great review!!!
Some questions: 1) does workers still get stuck when building buildings close to each other such as houses? 2) can you rotate the camera? 3) does the cheat codes work for single player? 4) is the lag you experienced CPU or GPU bound? 5) does the AI take use of all the resources such as farming more and trading after cutting down all the trees and mining all the resources? 6) can we choose between aggressive and defensive opponents? And are they actually defensive if we chose that? Thanks for the great review 👍🏻
I am not the videomakerguy, but i like to respond. 1. mostly not ;) 2. No, this would be a major departure from the setting. And the one view is more tactical in my humble opinion. 3) yes. 4) Depends on the settings, i personally did get rid off the fog of war animations (2 sliders) and i was good. Especially with the day one patch. The enhanced graphic dlc is quite demanding, more than is advertised. (not saying they are lying, i just cannot run the enhanced graphics very well. 5) Trading is still an issue, but i do notice they use the market. The new AI learns of how you play, it knows what to do when it has seen your weakness. It depends on the level of ai behaviour how well this is executed. 6) No we cannot, it depends on the playstyle of the Civ that is chosen. For instance Byzantians are known to be more defensive for the player. I found that to be true for the ai as well.
@@AgentSmith911 One new thing you could do with Allied AI is that you now could send commands to your allies to do very specific things. Even things like "Build defensive walls from here to there" and "please try to focus your military in x units"
Thank you so much for making this video. I grew up playing it through my college years in early 2000. Have lots of memories of playing with friends. Definitely going to try the new release. Thanks again.
This getting a re-re-master makes me cross my fingers for one of it's best clones, Galactic Batrlegrounds! I couldn't say how many hours u spent playing that
The original did have the feature of how many villagers worked on what resource using the buttons in the right bottom corner area. But it’s nice to see it right under the actual resource this time simple quality of life upgrades!
I remember logging onto MSN Gaming Zone to play Castle Blood online for hours as a 10 year old. I still periodically play, but I had no idea there were 30+ civilizations now. It's crazy that they kept releasing expansions.
Some of these points seem to reflect the CD version of the game and not the HD edition on Steam, as the HD edition AI no longer cheat to improve difficulty and instead reflect the competitive community's play style, but not as much as mentioned for the Remastered version. The ability to tell a unit such as a scout to go on a set path was also present in HD edition by simply holding shift.
I played the original AoE 1 AoE 2 The HD edition as well. I WANT this! This game has given me enjoyment for many years. And i love how they made the game sooo much better

I bought the game without any second thought... Worth it? WORTH IT!
I haven't touched this game in 20 years, but a company showing this much love to their game and customers deserves mad credit. I'm gonna re-buy this just to support em. (And give it another go.)
Between the new and old music, i still play the old one while playing the DE version of the game. I do wish they add a large map option like they did in Age of Mythology where you can go from small to large and be able to see where the relics are if you've uncovered parts of the map. The other thing i'd like included is the info in regards to the units and buildins, something AOM had. It was a nice little read, specially with myth units or heros.
Problem is not the game is just the way its played now. Back in my days I was the best RTS player within my small community, and matches of Broodwar/Frozen Throne/Age of Empires sometimes lasted like an hour or so maybe a bit less sometimes more. Then I met this AoE community and I stopped liking the game that much, this players knew how to wreck you in less than 10 minutes, I adapted over the time but I felt that the game used to be better when I played it at my own pace. Just give the game a try and play it to your liking, for example I'm not afraid to say that I still play CoD black ops 2 but only against bots, don't enjoy online multiplayer that much cause I'm just not that good.
I remember my best friends dad playing this game non stop when I was growing up. Didn't get it at the time. 20 years later thinking about giving it a try.
Nice review and exactly what I was looking for, wish your video was on the steam page for it. I will make one note, the shift click moving can be done in the hd version of the game It's just a little trickier to use than most rts. Shift click to place the flags and then let go of shift for the last click to get them to follow the command, I use it in every game for my scouts. What I would love to know is if they made this more intuitive in the definitive edition. :)
Okay, I'm glad this game is re-mastered now and released in 2019 and from the reviews I'm pretty hopeful that this will provide more than what is expected from a remastered version of a legendary game. I'm in a mood to try RTS once again after a long time but currently facing a dilemma whether I should go for this game yet again or choose from latest RTS games most of which I'm not much familiar with. I would really love to listen to suggestions on a game that I should be on the lookout for or the one I should be going for at this time. The main reason concerning is that I have went through AOE 1,2 and 3. 2 Being my all time favorite and the reason why I'm not reluctant to pick it up one again and with overall updates and improvements being the pros. On the flip side, I would love to try something else. Thanks guys..
Maana well.. RTS is not going well nowerdays. most best RTS franchise of all time comes from before 2000 to 2008. the only fresh new RTS that may give you hype would be either total war games or iron harvest. age of empire doesn't have any real competition sadly. so aoe2 de is right now the best of the genre you can find. there is some independent games that copy aoe and add their own flavour to it but it will never compare to aoe2 de in term of quality, visual and AI.
Maana from my knowledge there is north guard, 0a.d., bannermen and war selection that may give you an aoe vibe. they are all free except for northguard and bannermen. they are also all Indi games. but they pale a bit compared to aoe 2 de.
One thing that Galactic Battlegrounds had over Age of Empires 2, you could store your sheep/nerfs in a nursery and they'd give you passive food over time like relics or holocrons. Was that a feature put into this edition?
Tbh I didn’t even notice the lack of zooming. Like it never bothered me. And knowing me, I would keep zooming then having to keep zoom out. But it’s cool they added that :)
Really wish the community would ask for graphic of "operators" for the trabuchet, battering ram & such, instead of them walking on its own like a modern tank.
The battering ram makes sense actually if you look at the type of ram its based on, Those hooded rams were enclosed and the people operating them were actually inside them to protect from arrow fire, this is why you can garrison units inside of them to make them go faster.
This game is so much worth its price that I really feel bad for people that decided to pirate this game. Just buy it, we need to show support for this particular franchise if we want to see more of this.
This was great Pravus! I think this would make a good video every month or two. You could already queue units to walk a path with flags, you just had to right click to start it. It wasn't necessary to move scout one click at a time. I am really enjoying definitive edition. I played original discs for around 1000 hours and 600 with HD: Edition. I bought the whole series for three irl friends.

I haven't played since the Conquerors expansion and wasn't even aware of the HD Edition the game had having different nations. So I will 100% be picking the Definitive edition up when I'm able to sort my finances out. Thanks, Pravus!
I remember the campaigns of "El Cid Campeador" Awesome story line! Very educational!!!
i was 13 turning 14 when AOE II was released, this update has been a long time coming.
Bruh I was 6 watching my older bro play on his pc can't wait to play!!!
3:15 - Yo so anyone else stop the video to buy the game for first time?
I'll consider purchasing it when it's on sale down the road. I am one of those players who only plays story and super casual single matches or random with the ai on easy.
Jan 2021 and this makes me so happy to know this remastered version came out. Thanks for the review it’s been about 15 years since I played going to download it now!
And you get in after they have fixed most bugs, good for you ;)
Gooo
How was it?
Shift queue move order was already in the base game. I think they implemented shift queuing on a lot of other game mechanics.
Yeah, the shift queuing was always in the game. If I'm not mistaken though, DE only added a quicker, simplified method that doesn't require you to release shift before issuing that final command, like in Blizzard's RTS games.
Age of Empires 2 DE should have more violence and blood. I hope small updates in that direction will come. I also want to see skeletons on the ground, they are important to create an atmosphere.
In addition what I do not like in Age Of Empires 2 DE:
1) They removed sounds of agony when a unit dies.
2) They removed corpse decomposition! Instead, the corpse is slowly falling deep underground, which is bad.
3) If a bowman or a spearman misses, the projectiles are no longer visible on the ground.
4) There is not enough blood!!!
5) The AI?? It could still be improved but it is acceptable. I am a programmer myself so I know how difficult it is to create a great AI.
As for the rest of the game, it is easily 10/10 remaster.
I hope that the game will be updated.
Agreed with points above, people will make mods soon so dont worry you will eventually get more brutal, bloody and more realistic graphics
@@SonoftheKing787 "Agreed with points above"
Thanks!
Your requests probably will be heard and probably be added either by a patch or by mods
I swear the home screen for the game IS Attack on Titan
I started playing with game since AOE first came out....I was litterally on it from sunrise to sun down on weekends and after school till bedtime for weeks....it was that good. now with kids i hadnt played in years but the nostalgia brought me back...love this game!
Are you able to rejoin a multiplayer gamer after your computy or game crashes in the new edition?
Me and my buddy would play 2v2 and he would do resource gathering while I would just focus on defense and army. Very fun memories.
Shift queue scout(or any unit) movement was already there before DE. Looks like you were not aware of it
I would love a definitive edition of Galactic Battlegrounds, I had so much fun playing AoE2 in the Star Wars galaxy back in the day!
Playing it for 15 yrs never thought I'd see the day when aoe4 would be released.
I had so many great memories with the original AOE2 back in the day. My brother and I would play LAN games all the time.
Pravus plays Age of Empires II?
HALLELUJAH!!! HALLELUJAH!!!
More like WOLOLO WOLOLO
Some questions:
1) does workers still get stuck when building buildings close to each other such as houses?
Thanks! I will buy the game.
I couldn't say how many hours u spent playing that
Depenss highly on the playerbase.
AoE2 has a pretty big community for a 20+ year old game
It aged very well so to speak
Holy fuck I remember playing that game in MSN game zone
YESSSSS. I would KILL (Or pay money) For a Galactic Battleground Remaster like this.
Sadly it will never happen.... You know... Disney...
Praise Pravus! This review has made me glad I pre-ordered this edition of a game I've enjoyed since the 90's.
The first game I have pre-ordered in years :P
The original did have the feature of how many villagers worked on what resource using the buttons in the right bottom corner area. But it’s nice to see it right under the actual resource this time simple quality of life upgrades!
I remember logging onto MSN Gaming Zone to play Castle Blood online for hours as a 10 year old. I still periodically play, but I had no idea there were 30+ civilizations now. It's crazy that they kept releasing expansions.
This game was my childhood, im soooo gonna play this!!! Can't wait to get back into it
So thrilled to know I worked on the AoE: AoK back in the day at MS.
3:17 *sweats nervously while clicking add to cart on steam*
Some of these points seem to reflect the CD version of the game and not the HD edition on Steam, as the HD edition AI no longer cheat to improve difficulty and instead reflect the competitive community's play style, but not as much as mentioned for the Remastered version. The ability to tell a unit such as a scout to go on a set path was also present in HD edition by simply holding shift.
Are you going to do a playtrough of the game?
Yes please
Hehe, he says 0:11 The Age of Kings, and shows Gameplay from The Conquerors
Played the Original AoE 1 & 2, AoM, AoE 2 HD, AOE 1 DE and now AOE 2 DE. All this Apart from the various Mods. Damn! Time flies.
I remember getting it the day it came out. The menu screen was something new and amazing. Still blows me away.
Amazing overview and review, man! I applaud your efforts. liked & subbed!
I just picked this up and I'm watching this videos came across yours thanks for all the information this truly is a great game
I played the original AoE 1
AoE 2
The HD edition as well.
I WANT this!
This game has given me enjoyment for many years. And i love how they made the game sooo much better
I bought the game without any second thought... Worth it? WORTH IT!
I got it the other day, the game is amazing, best remaster I've seen in a while if not ever :-)
Famous Cheats of Good Old days :P
Aegis: For Instant build
Pepparonipizza: For Max food
Lumberjack: For Max wood
Rockon: For Max stone
I am Human
how to turn this on: for vroom vroom
Robin Hood: for gold
Used to love this game, prefer a slower pace now though, God I'm getting old.
Funny. I think AoE is one of the Slower Base Building RTS's :P
I guess to each their taste ^^
Must be different now than back in the day then if you weren't on the ball, your game could be over in five minutes...
But just realised we're talking about different things your talking about solo and I meant about multiplayer lol
Especially for you they have a slow speed option :)
I almost bought the HD Edition recently, gladly I didn't so I can get the Definitve Edition. Thanks for the review!
Great review. I have the game already too and boy - what an improvement!
Maana from my knowledge there is north guard, 0a.d., bannermen and war selection that may give you an aoe vibe. they are all free except for northguard and bannermen. they are also all Indi games. but they pale a bit compared to aoe 2 de.
here a video that should give you a better answer than me ^^

One thing that Galactic Battlegrounds had over Age of Empires 2, you could store your sheep/nerfs in a nursery and they'd give you passive food over time like relics or holocrons. Was that a feature put into this edition?
2 decades of AGE OF EMPIRES + AGE OF MYTHOLOGY 🍝🌯🥤🍦🍇🍷
Fantastic review. Great voice and it shows that you truly like games with your research and context.
VERY well made video, Good Job making things to watch.
This game is so much worth its price that I really feel bad for people that decided to pirate this game.
Just buy it, we need to show support for this particular franchise if we want to see more of this.
This was great Pravus! I think this would make a good video every month or two. Reviewing a game that fits with the channels theme or on an old game you played that gets a new release (Remaster, definitive, etc.)! I loved AoE 2 as a kid, was the first PC game I played at 6 years old. Maybe even play one of the new campaigns sometime, that could be great. Keep up the great work!
Pravus and AoE II
A match made in heaven
This is my intro into the game, and my god I've been missing out these past 21 years. The day I started I played 5 hours straight without moving from my seat.
If you're still on the fence about the game; trust me, you need to get it. You will not regret it.
Man I loved this game. Takes me back. Must get a pc again.
I felt giddy starting the remake. It feels nice, and some nice new balance changes. New civs feel a little OP but balance will fix those.
Hi Pravus,
I love this review video. I haven't played AoE since the first release. I think after watching this video I will get back in to it. Thank you.
You could already queue units to walk a path with flags, you just had to right click to start it. It wasn't necessary to move scout one click at a time. I am really enjoying definitive edition. I played original discs for around 1000 hours and 600 with HD: Edition. I bought the whole series for three irl friends.
The hd edition on steam was a remaster , the definitive edition is a remake
No they are both remastered this does not really change that much it changes the troops look but there were mods that already did that this adds a few campaign
Danomite is this game in Mac?
I really want this game because I played this 5 years ago before I moved and I really want it, but I can’t find it on Mac 😭
No Mac. But I don’t like it’s probably because my labtop ks over 5 years old and can just meets the requirements to run but the load times make it almost unplayable
@@Tzarclips virtual box my friend
Cullen Diethron I have steam on my Mac, it has age of empires 2 on it, can you just buy it and download it to play?
I'm a PvE junkie, love those skirmishes 12 years ago. About to play this beauty.
Thank you very much for your time. It was a great and helpful review.
