Making My Dream Shop -- Episode Two

  • The second installment of my series on making my dream woodshop. Before I got settled, I wanted to make the shop a little easier on the eyes. So I patched all the seams on the OSB walls, added a heavy texture to blend it all in, then painted the entire shop a nice light gray. Finally, I replaced my old yellow fluorescent shop lights with high intensity LED lights in a bright white 6000k color.
Let me know what you think of the process, or if you have any tips for me!

I remember a few years ago my in-laws called me to tell me they were at the grocery store with their keys locked in the trunk. I had to drive to their house, pick up the spare keys, then drive to the grocery store. Unfortunately, this was during one of the worst snow storms in the last decade, so what would normally have taken me about an hour took me 3 hours.
When I arrived at the grocery store, my MIL explained what happened - "we were putting groceries away, and then the trunk closed". Hmmm, I couldn't help but feel like some important details were being left out of the story.
That's the same feeling I had when I saw what happened to the TV. I think the TV deserved its own episode.
    Love the video, as always.

Tv makes great white noise in the background, and the ability to look up when something you hear grabs your attention, is an added benefit. Your humility is refreshing and watching you tackle projects outside of your profession definitely is instructional and entertaining. You say it is not a “Professional” grade job, but from looking at the video there certainly isn’t a $5,000 difference in quality from your work to that of a contractors.

Radio AND TV... or, Pandora on TV. Best of both worlds.
These types of videos can help with those of us who aren't building a woodworking shop. I want to create a smaller studio for drawing and paper mache sculpture, but a lot of your hints and tricks are transferrable. Not only that, it demonstrates how unintimidating it can be. So, thanks for that.
"Less ego and commentary"?!? Honestly, your humility is refreshing. Also, if you don't want commentary... well, why are you watching videos in the first place?
Keep up the good work. :)

Radio - Are you going to do anything with the ceiling? With the lights it really shows the gaps between the OSB - they make the dark gaps more noticeable. Do you think you could put some of the filler that you used initially on the wall gaps?
It could be quite cool to add in some colour changing LED strips in your workshop. You could use it for nice lighting with your photos or videos of your work? It would change the colour dynamics on some of the pieces - especially if it was a gaming or office table perhaps?

I swapped my old fluorescent fixtures out for the same led fixtures you have. It’s amazing how much brighter they are and yes no more humming. As far as future content goes, I’m not picky. Good quality content, without drama and music, will always keep me to watching to the end of a video. Keep up the good work Cam.

Good to see that you place the cord to the broken tv INSIDE the trash can with the tv. It’s amazing how many people leave cords hanging on the outside of their trash can. What happens? The arm pinches the cord against the can and when the can is brought back to the ground whatever is hooked to the cord comes flying back out of the truck.

Radio. Tip - If you ever use boxes of drywall mud again, open the box, fold the the flaps down the side and pull the extra plastic bag down the sides. Now you can pick up the box and set one of the sides on the lip of the bucket. Tip the box up and the mud will dump out. The plastic will get sucked down with it. Pull the box out and put your hand into the plastic and pull the dirty side back in. Hands stay clean. Well pretty clean.

I usually avoid Shop tour videos, but I enjoyed watching yours. Thanks for the video.

“Radio” guy here, love the shop video’s. It takes a lot of work to get up and running to be able to make the projects that you do and I think that is important to see the “behind” the scenes as well as the finished products

Ha! Book people do watch your videos! Though I’m an audiobook person when I’m working. What a difference those lights make. Definitely something to keep in mind for all makers, not just woodworkers.

I love the shop update stuff. I’ve seen you make a lot of table. I love watching working. I could do it all day 👍👍🤪
