Clean Audio Workflow With The ATEM Mini Pro

  • One of the bigger challenges I've had working with the ATEM Mini Pro was a clean audio workflow. When first plugging in, I found the audio to be clipping really easily with a really small window of acceptable audio and either all-too-quiet or all-too-loud audio. After playing with settings for a while, I think I've found the settings I like.
    This video outlines a fairly versatile workflow that scales easily from one mic to six. Just as important as scalability is audio quality. I feel like this is the best audio I can get out of the device without upgrading our hardware considerably. All of the audio you're hearing is exactly as it was recorded on the ATEM with no compression, limiting or normalizing done in post. What you hear is what we taped (WYHIWWT).
    There's a lot of gear used in this video.
    A Camera - Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K with Sigma 18-35 Art Lens.
    B-Camera - GoPro Hero 3
    Switcher - ATEM Mini Pro
    Audio Mixer - Zoom H6
    Monitor - Atomos Ninja
    If you have any questions about ATEM Mini Pro workflow, please drop them in the comments. Cheers!

    Is your MIC 1 input set to "Line" in ATEM Software Control -> Settings -> Audio -> General? If set to "Microphone", that would definitely cause over-sensitivity...

      Yes, you have definitely set the input to Mic, that’s why you feel the ATEM so sensitive.
      Just set it to line as Lina as Rob mentioned.
      Also play with the audio delay from the different sources.

    This was extremely helpful! I have been pulling my hair out as to why my audio is coming out so HOT and thought I just must have something wrong, but hearing your experience with clipping also is a relief. On Blackmagic own tutorial they explain to set the imported audio at the highest before distortion which usually makes sense, but I think with these ATEMs you need to be extra carful, but love the aggressive compressing as a solution! Great idea.

    • @JJKoester

      The recording on the ATEM can go on as long as you have hard drive space. Depending on the camera you're using, you might have to nudge it every 25 minutes or so with a quick autofocus or something like that to keep it from going to sleep. Canon DSLRs kip out after 29 minutes and 59 seconds so as not to be considered camcorders in Europe.

      It makes sense and you can do that. Just be sure to set your input level to line instead of mic on the ATEM and you can do that through the ATEM Software controller. In this tutorial, I mention that the ceiling between clean signal and clipping is rather low. This is because I didn't know how to change it to Line Level input at the time.

    Don't forget that you can delay the mic/line inputs so you don't get the echo effect when you turn on the camera mic. It's located just below the gain adjustment in the ATEM software audio control, and set in delay by the number of frames of video. HDMI video is inherently delayed, while the mics and line levels are in real time. Turn on mic 1 and the camera mic at the same time. Click on the delay adjustment on the mic input, just under the gain knob. Then snap your fingers and adjust the delay until you no longer hear an echo or reverb effect.

I'm using an atem mini pro and obs but when I stream or record, ios users can hear the sound perfectly but everyone else hears a high-pitched sound until they put in earphones. The same goes for recorded content. Anyone know what causes this?

    • @JJKoester
      @JJKoester  3 роки тому

      The first thing I would check is that everything is set to the same frequency. We were running our audio through a Zoom H4n for a while and it sounded fine on our end but it was shredding people's ears because we had it outputting at 44.8 and the computer was expecting 44.1 or something like that. What you're experiencing might be completely different (I don't even know if you can change the audio processing frequency on an ATEM) because it was across the board that people were being affected by this problem, not just certain OSes. Sorry I don't have more for you on this one.

    Awesome two-torial. We've been working with the ATEM Mini for a few months. The audio has always been a big issue. Originally we used an H-6 but have recently switched over to an L-8. The last project I tried to record clipped like crazy and I couldn't figure out where in the chain to address the problem. I think I have a better handle on it now. For sure, a headphone jack on the ATEM would have been a huge help in all of this. There's a lot more audio waiting in the software than the hardware but it still feels quite limited.

    • @JJKoester
      @JJKoester  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for commenting! The RODEcaster is a pretty neat piece of gear and I'm sure you can get it working. My best guess would be to use one of the 5 headphone outs with my first choice being the one in the front. I'm guessing that one is a stereo mix of all channels affected by the volume slider. I'd start with it low and bring it up until I can hear it through the ATEM. If you're at maximum volume and this is still happening, I'd go into the ATEM control software and start fiddling with input volumes from there. I'm sorry I don't know more but those are the steps I would try first. If none of that works, you might try sending the L channel to Mic 1 on the ATEM and the R channel to Mic 2.

    I'm sure you have no haters! I have a setup which includes a mixer and the atem. I have really been struggling to understand setting up a feed for livestreaming vs also having great sound in the room. The are so many options, but I understanding that using the ATEM audio setting will help me with the livestream. Thank you

    Awesome Video, thank you so much. I would suggest using an additional Low-Cut-Filter on the ATEM-EQ, because your Mic is quite sensitive to low pop-noise, which made my sub dance around the room while watching the video ^^

      Brother, your timing couldn't be better. I'm halfway through the script for "CleanER audio workflow with the ATEM Mini Pro". Improvements across the board over the last year and I can't wait to share them.
      I hope that dancing woofer didn't break any fine china or faberge eggs. ;-)

    So I have a question or two? I am running my XLR mic through an mixer and running the mixer into line 1. I set the audio right along with this tutorial but when I did a test live stream, I got the video but there was no audio. Does anyone know what can cause this?

    • @JJKoester
      @JJKoester  2 роки тому +1

      I have honestly forgotten to turn the track on and spent 10 minutes adjusting level on the signal before realizing that I'd left it off.

      @@JJKoester I set the master control according to your settings as well... Clearly got a signal but when I went back to test the stream, I got the video but could barely hear the audio. But I guess at least I have audio... lol!!!

      @@JJKoester How do you have your levels set up on your Zoom? I am thinking my issue isn't in the ATEM but the mixer itself.

    Thank you for the video thank you alot, can u tell he how u set the gain on zoom h6 ?

    • @JJKoester
      @JJKoester  3 роки тому

      That's the nice thing about line out. It's at a fixed level. We adjust the mic gain volume on the front of the zoom recording as per the needs of the recording but once you have a good level, you don't have to worry about headphone volume or anything like that. Good luck!

    Thanks for this quick tutorial. I have am taking a feed from a sound desk - a balanced mono signal which seems nice and clean - but the level seems to be very low. If I understood you correctly I should strive to get my levels up into the “red” as you said normally people are comfortable listening to between -6 and 0db?

    • @JJKoester
      @JJKoester  3 роки тому

      Between -6 and 0 is really comfortable for audio levels. That's where you'd want to be. Have you been plugging your ATEM into a computer to get access to the higher functions and audio control?
      Also, thanks for the subscribe! More videos coming soon!

    What if I use the DBX286s as the external compressor along with a Steinberg interface? Would it be better to skip the ATEM software compressor and EQ?

    • @JJKoester
      @JJKoester  3 роки тому +1

      To paraphrase Obama, if you like your external compression, you can keep your external compression. I just do it in-unit because we use the ATEM Mini for our down and dirty field jobs where less gear = better experience.
      The ATEM internal compression is better than what one would expect from such a cost-conscious device that is mainly focused on picture editing. But, it's still audio compression on a cost-conscious device mainly focused on picture editing.

    I really appreciate your having made this video! I have a live event that I’m attempting to do a multi cam shoot for tonight and I’m using a Sennheiser 416 through the Roadcaster Pro... totally got it dialed in with the few little points I may have been missing with my new ATEM Mini Pro!
