    I own this tent (Gen. 2) but with the "solid" interior which I dyed green with RIT Dyemore (for synthetic fabrics)
    To keep the fly from flapping in high winds I put 4 stake loops on the fly hem reinforcing the light nylon grosgrain loop attachment points with two layers of Tenacious Tape and DCF tape sandwiched over the edge of the fly. Girth hitch women's heavy hair circles over the stake loops so the stakes which go inside them have some "give" in high winds yet maintain tension on the fly.
    1st TIP: Use two MSR Ground Hog SPIRAL stakes, one for each end, for absolute pitch security.
    2nd TIP: Use "SEAM GRIP" glue (for polyurethane fabrics, not silnylon) to glue the EDGES of the black Hypalon "pole sockets" to further secure them. I had one of these let go in a windstorm and the pole fell down - REPEATEDLY, despite proper guying.
    Henry Shires, owner of Tarptent, sent me a free tube of Seam Grip and it is definitely a very strong glue for this purpose. Once again, outstanding Tarptent customer service.

    Thank you for your really good video of the Notch LI. I probably have watched it 10+ times (probably more) while deciding on my new tent. I finally got my Notch Li in the mail yesterday and will be taking it on my AT 2021 trip. Thanks again and happy trails.

      Glad the video helped. No one seems to watch any of my videos except the two tent ones but that’s ok.
      I have a 2021 thru hike planned too. If I go in February like I did this yr I would splurge on the solid interior and switch out when warm. Good luck!

      @@pgreenx I'll be starting the AT in mid April and am going to attempt a yoyo - I originally was planning a February start, like you, but with C19 things got all shaken up, to say the least. April is a little later start than I would like but the yoyo its still doable. Trail name: Butters. Hope to see you on the trail!

      Thanks. My favorite tent for long trips. You give up space but it’s light, storm proof and double walls (almost no condensation)

    I've had a silnylon Notch with the standard mesh interior since '16. I never close the ends and only once lowered it to storm mode. Taller bathtub hasn't been necessary for me; everything stays dry and surprisingly the wind isn't an issue - it's less drafty than a typical AT shelter.
    When this one fails, I'll likely upgrade to the DCF version with a solid roof panel... hopefully it will be available without the solid sides. In some instances, the condensation that collects on the underside of the fly will be "thumped" off by large raindrops, which people call "misting", and yes, some comes through the mesh. All tents will do this. Having a waterproof roof panel on the inner tent will fix this. He currently offers the roof panel in the solid interiors.
    Thanks for your review. Hope you continue to like your Notch as much as I like mine, and look forward to your long term review.

    That was a great review. You hit on the important points in a concise and clear narration with visuals to emphasize the points. I would add regarding the setup that the Notch Li is one of the very few USA made tents that sets up with the inner tent attached to the fly. This is a huge advantage when setting up in wet weather. It also makes taking down a wet tent or one with condensation much easier. I unbuckle the inner tent, roll fold it into my pack, then take down the fly last and roll it then strap it on the outside of my pack. If it clears up I can set it up and let it all dry out or if not, I can set up the wet outer then crawl in and clip in the dry inner. I think as you get some time in this tent you’ll come to appreciate that one feature probably more than any other.

      Thanks for the feedback. I was going to show the inner tent breakdown but didn’t want the videos too long. Also was going to do a separate video on this but no one really watches them and didn’t think it was worth the effort! Maybe when it warms up. Thanks again!

      @@pgreenx You had my attention through the entire video. Because of the constant progress and good demonstration no part of it was boring. For me its not the length of a video, but the pace and density of information that make the video enjoyable. Even a short video with a lot of stupid commentary, or fumbling around trying to get setup is annoying. You did a great job and I’d encourage you to make more using your unique format. You could do one on a rain setup showing the “European method” (or so I was told) of storing the inner and outer separate. Set up that outer and get under, out of the rain (yeah, you’d have to film this while raining for good effect). Get inside the outer, brew a cup, relax, settle gear a bit, then when ready hang the inner and settle in. Take down is to remove the inner and story separate. I do this and it’s wonderful. The outer has a lot of room inside and so I prefer it for brewing up a cup or preparing dinner without the inner set up. I don’t set up the inner until bedtime, or if the bugs are horrible. It’s much more relaxing to hang out under just the outer. Have fun out there!

    I have this tent also (Notch Li, Gen.2) but with the "solid" interior. I am also 5' 10". I have dyed the solid cloth green with RIT Dyemore synthetic dye. The bottom 1 foot has a green/white/green "tie-dyed" look B/C I had to tie it off to keep the hot dye water from touching the DCF floor. Thus not all of the inner tent to dyed
    ->I added 4 fly hem stake loops with the attachment points reinforced with first a circle of Dyneema repair tape over the edge of the fly hem (1/2 inside, 1/2 outside) and second a larger overlapping circle of Tenacious tape. Then I had a shoe repair shop sew on the stake loops. This is to nail down the fly in high winds. It works on my Tarptent Moment DW and so I wanted them on the Notch Li.
    ** I also carry 2 extra stakes to guy out the Notch Li to get a truly tight catenary cut ridge. Just makes a tighter pitch.

    • @pgreenx
      @pgreenx  4 роки тому

      I thought about this but going to wait until in more severe weather and see how just lowering the pitch works.

      pg, I got the "solid" interior B/C here in the southwest we can sometimes have dusty winds that (with a full net interior) WILL put a fine layer of dust over everything inside your tent, sleeping bag, clothing, hair, teeth, etc. (Don't ask) The solid sides tend to keep out 90% of this dust in my experience.
      Also we sometimes experience a freak snowstorm at high altitudes in the shoulder seasons and those solid sides keep out spindrift snow. For the cost of a new interior you could get the solid and have more flexibility. Henry Shires made this new solid inner tent of vERY light material that does not raise the weight!
      Looking forward to your long term review of theNotch Li. Henry sells THE highest quality Dyneema tents on the market. Our 202 Gen. 2 versions are made in China and Henry claims they re of the very highest build quality. I agree.

      Thanks. I’m attempting an AT thru hike next February 2021 and may buy the soldier interior. Not so much for snow drift but warmth. I heard it was lighter than the mesh one

    • @ericb.4358
      @ericb.4358 4 роки тому

      The solid interior is "lighter" but only by 0.2 oz. However I noticed that even with both fly doors open amazingly it still was a bit warmer inside than outside. But the ventilation was fine. I'll still use my TT Moment DW for winter.

    Great review. Thanks for being succinct and to the point. Amazing how many tent ‘reviews’ never end up sharing necessary opinions (or really any opinions) needed to make an informed decision. I’ve been eyeing the stratospire from tarp tent but it seems like a bit too bulky with a massive footprint and tough to set up. Super cool looking though

      Thanks! Glad it helped. I tried to give an honest review and have had my share of tents. no tent is perfect but I do like it for east coast (AT) hiking. if I hiked the PCT or Colorado trail or similar I think Id go with the Strato for the extra room. I think it would be hard to find good/flat spots for it in the Northeast where I lives the strato seems to have a pretty big footprint.

    Nice review, thanks! Curious if your pad is regular (20") or large (25")? I'm guessing regular. Also curious how the headroom is with both the NeoAir XLite and a pillow (side sleeper here). thanks in advance!

      Thanks. It’s a regular 20” pad. Headroom with a pillow fine too. I should have shown this but no problems.
      Only Issue but it’s this tent is narrow width but I love small footprint. When others cant find a place to pitch I could go almost anywhere.

    Thank you for a great and detailed review.
    If I got it right, you sleep right at the bottom with a mat and still have ample space above your feet not touching the inner?
    The reason I’m asking is that I’m 6”4 and considering buying this tent but I’m concerned about the foot and head height, especially since it has a tapered fit. The slanted ends seem really neat and will help accommodate my length, I guess 😊

    • @pgreenx
      @pgreenx  3 роки тому

      I am 5,10” and have about 6-8 inches total extra floor space. Plenty for me. Remember it’s a double wall tent so even when my pad slides down and my bag footbox touches it’s only touching the net. That said I’m not sure it would work for you. Then again at 6 4” I’m sure you have problems with a lot of stuff.
      There is a video of a guy at least as tall as you with a notch in you tube somewhere. I’d check that out.
      I do love the tent. Spend two nights ago on a rainy night on the AT and NO condensation. It’s small but all the guys with duplexes had tons of condensation. And even with a duplex you will probably have a tight fit. Hope this helps. Good luck!

    How would you rate this compared to The One from Gossamer Gear?

    • @pgreenx
      @pgreenx  4 роки тому +1

      I never saw a GG One in person but looked at it prior to buying the notch. Notch Li is double wall and with the carbon struts, has much better head and foot room although narrower. Also more expensive. I also like the dyneema material of the Notch. Overall I was willing to have a slightly smaller tent in exchange for the double wall (less condensation and way more ventilation) and Dyneema. Plus from what I hear Tarptent has much higher quality build than GG but sure If I had a larger Subscriber base, people would challenge this. Thanks!

    i have the TT Protrail in nylon. i really like the tent, at 6' tall i never wake up with a wet head or footbox. as you mentioned with the Notch a small footprint is a blessing at times, which like the Notch the Protrail has. will the Notch fit in the side pocket of your pack? that's another thing i like with the Protrail. it allows me to use a GG 36L Kumo pack.

      Thanks - yes the notch fits in the side pocket of my ULA Ohm. Have not tried it in the side pocket of my NUL Sundown though. I like it on top so I can keep other stuff in the side pockets though. Separately, I alway find a spot; wanted the Stratosphire but didn't want to take chance it would not fit at all spots on the AT. Will buy it though if I get to hike to PCT in a few yrs.

    Nice review - I've watched it numerous times. I believe you have some experience with poled-tents as well (freestanding & semi-). In search for a great 1p I would appreciate your perspective. I'm considering the Notch Li, Nemo Hornet (maybe Elite) & Tiger Wall UL1. Living in the Western NC mountains most if not all of my backcountry time is the Appalachians, AT, Pisgah, Smokies... My question pertains to always having the ability to use a tensioning trekking pole shelter, or at times would a freestanding be necessary. I prefer to use my poles & keep weight down, but am hesitate given the ground requirements for trekking pole tents. Do I have reason for concern in your opinion, or are you always able to erect the Notch? Thank you for any insight - I really appreciate it. Great video.

    • @pgreenx
      @pgreenx  3 роки тому

      I like the notch for a few reasons:
      - I like Dyneema over syl nylon: doesn't sag when wet, doesn't hold moisture and super light
      - I prefer free standing tents like the TW or Copper Spur as I can move them around to find a good flat spot but will always go with trekking pole tent to save weight. Free standing tents are Also easier when you have a tent platform (check out my Long trail video and you will see what a pain to get set up on a platform)
      - I like the small foot print of the notch and can ALWAYS find a spot for it (downside is it is pretty small inside)
      - lastly, I like th notch because pre and post pandemic, I don feel as guilty carrying a light tent when I sleep in shelters
      Thanks for watching and hope this helped!

      @@pgreenx Thank you for the thorough & prompt reply. I'll check out your Long trail video. Re UL freestanding tents, which 1p would you pick between the Nemo Hornet (incl Elite) & the Tiger Wall? The Hornet sounds great but I get conflicting info on whether it can wet out where the high fly cutaway is for better ventilation. Very helpful. Appreciate you. Steve

    • @pgreenx
      @pgreenx  3 роки тому

      As you point out, I personally never liked the high tent flys on the Nemo tents; that said, I don’t know much about Nemo tents. The tiger wall is a great tent if you go syl-nylon double-wall free standing. I also did a review on my copper spur if you want to check it out. I’d buy the tiger wall if I did it again. Bigger for the weight.
      One last thing- I bought my notch based on ease of set up ( like 3 minutes), weight and Small footprint. Good luck. No tent is perfect so you will never bad the best or worst choice!

      @@pgreenx I watched your review again as I was tempted by the REI Quarter Dome SL1 that's now available again. Still want the Notch Li (weight) though I think. Had another question when you have the time to respond: Do trekking pole tents trash your trekking poles, or have you found a way to keep them nice (I've got new poles w cork handles). I know, it's just a tool, but would be nice. I know it has a handle up option as well. Read diff things about that, leaving me to think handles down are preferred (maybe?). If handles down could you wrap them (bread bags) or just let it go & don't overthink it. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Again, really great review. Each time I watch it I learn something.
