A lot of this was in the 80s/90s when stuff was more expensive and in most cases not as good as now. It seems to me that you youtube/ebay generation have a massive advantage of buying a better range of gear, in many cases reviewed by one of there piers on youtube. I'm wondering if they're taking full advantage of the advantage they have. So, my question to you is. If a Tech/youtube savvy 20 something wanted to buy the best gear in the first place, and not go through the trial and error most of us have been through over time. I perfectly understand the desire to find that perfect tent, the holy grail of hikers and campers the world over. But I don't think it really exists except in myth and lore. After all, the perfect tent would actually morph into different tents depending on the weather, the type of adventure, the location, and a zillion other factors. Perfect for this year, perhaps. But I'd bet that within a month of use, you'll be thinking of some little changes you would like to see done to it. Still, a wholly worthy quest!
I wish someone brought back berry or wildberry i think it was Powerbars. I used to buy them a lot in the 90's training for triathlons. That was my favorite flavor. Peanut butter or chocolate is a toss up. And you can still buy those. I bought a whole box of berry one time. To save money. Left them in the plastic bag on my bed. Left for a few hours only to come home and find my yellow lab tore open the box ate all but 2 bars. Left wrappers all over the room. Since the mid ninetie, they stopped making that flavor. I also miss Turkey Hill Sports drink they used to carry in a waxed carton. Its a local company in Pa that makes great iced tea. That also was in the late 80's early 90's. I have already emailed them about 5 years ago on that. Nothing. They had an orange and also a lemon lime flavor.

Very excited! I'm 6'2", and in the market for my first dcf tent. Been waiting to buy an Aeon Li. Now going to have to reconsider in favor of this. I would really love if you could do a bit of a side by side comparison of these. Including aspects you prefer about the Aeon Li. I had come to terms with packing it vertically, so I'm not totally sold on the Altiplex yet. How does the headroom feel without a crossbar on top?
Not a tent but has anyone considered an updated version of the external frame pack? Small Titanium frame - DCF combo? Soft internal frames are just not as comfortable when carrying lots of water and food.
@@DarwinOnthetrail so if I could convince my client (a leading hiking/trail shoe manufacturer) to sponsor your AT hike for $200k you'd turn it down....dang that's some morals. I'd totally sell-out.
Voting with your dollars. Your commitment, talent, influence, and actual dollars have improved a community. I certainly appreciate your effort. Thanks Darwin!
What should be brought back on the market is our tent the Sierra Designs Flash 3. It is not a super light tent but it is light for made of polyester and what is great about it is 1) one piece set up and 2) the best: no front tent but an awning. Having to crawl through a wet from condensation front tent is just plain awfull. Instead this tent features seperate places tot put your gear and you can get in and out this tent very easy. The awnings work great. Just sit in your tentdoor while cooking in the rain, the tent stays dry. Our club of backpackers here in the Netherlands were very interested in the design. Before they could buy one, it was out of production. We think this was because this tent was clearly misunderstood. Even at the outdoor shop they sold it as a tent for sunny weather, because of the 'lack' of a front tent. But we camp in it year round. We also have the Triplex, but the Flash 3 stays our favorite.
A tent for a Pontoon boat is a niche market. Many people like to camp on boat. We need a 4x7 rectangle tent with no stakes. Weight of me and air mattress should hold it down! Comments please.
For the life of me I just cannot figure out this green screen configuration. I’m thinking he has a series of mirrors set up in a hexagonal style setup. If by walking to the left of the tree (looking at Darwin) with the precise mirror set up he could maybe pull it off using a set up comprising of multiple color schemes thus giving him the ability to render each mirror to show a separate scene producing what you see here “the illusion that he is in nature”.
The new Zpacks Altaplex tent looks like it will be the perfect tent for you! I'm still a hammock guy, but if I ever look at tents this one looks great.
I just ordered the Tarptent Notch Li Gen. 2 DCF tent as "My Perfect Tent". (Damn well better be at just over $600. ;o) It's upgraded with waterproof door zippers, better inner tent and better build quality than Gen 1. And it's fast to put up. I've used a Tarptent Moment DW for years. SO... I liked the "double-wallness" of the Notch Li as well as the similar-to-Moment DW and very nice two level venting of the Notch Li. I ALWAYS use 2 trekking poles so why not the Notch Li? And with a "solid" interior it weighs only 3 oz. more than the single wall TT AEON Li and is FAR more snow-worthy if you should get caught in an unseasonable snow storm. (Happens - don't ask)
Hmmm.... your TT AEON Li or my TT Notch Li (or even my TT Moment DW) have "Pitch Loc" carbon fiber struts. I love my two TT solo tents so much that I just pack them VERTICALLY and have no problems. Tarptent's DCF designs are still ahead of others (in both design and quality) and that's why I love them.
Darwin... I'm new to hiking. I've probably watched all your vids. All the info is much appreciated! My buddy has asked to join him for a hike next week... in the canyons, in Texas, in July!! I believe, next week, it should be around 130 degrees... (85 at night) For a beginner, on a budget, I'm really stressing over which tent I need to purchase?!?!
I know this is an old video, but I'd love more female specific / short hiker gear. I'm 5'0". I'm wayyyy too small for regular gear. Backpacks, sleeping pads, tights, jackets - you name it, it doesn't fit. I always have to cuff/roll sleeves and pants, bunch up sleeping bags, and don't get me started on how a sleeping pad caves in the middle if you're short. And finding a backpack that doesn't hit me in the wrong spot in the back of the head/hips because my torso isn't long enough. And while I could just use kid gear, it's not the same quality/temp rating. Sooooooo frustrating!
This is just awesome all around. Very cool that you found an option for taller guys. Nice that Zpacks is listening to the demand of taller hikers. I currently have only used their packs but this might get me in one of their tents. Being 6'4" this is great news.
My favorite is a Big Sky International Chinook solo and I have both interiors and a HD poleset at 13 inch section lengths. They do have something that fills your list quite well. The BSI Wisp bigskyproducts.com/big-sky-wisp-1p-trekking-pole-tent-lightest-weight.aspx. Would an internal length of 91 inches do you? This compares favorably with the new ZPacks. KM
I will be at the showing of your documentary tomorrow night. I've noticed you have been wearing the Ghost Whisperer jacket lately. Do you still like the EE Torid APEX? I'm looking forward to your documentary tomorrow. Good hiking to you.
Hi Darwin, May I know your common for plexamid? Altaplex seems a taller version of plexamid. Do you think for a shorter person like me 5‘7” plexamid is a better choice? Thanks.
Im hoping the light weigh 4# backpacker style tent i bought from Wal-Mart for $11 on sale works for Colorado..... Seems breathable/has a bathtub & full rain fly..... Im sure I'll have to waterproof it some more however.
Someone looking for a cheaper version that meets these criteria might check out the REI Flash Air 1. It's not DCF, but it pitches with one trekking pole and is tall enough for me at 6'1". Some reviewers have complained about condensation. I haven't encountered any, but I've only used it in Colorado where it's quite dry.
I'm sure you're asked all the time for opinions, but as a 5'9, weekend backpacker with using two 51" Gossamer Gear tracking poles with a 45 later pack - would you still choose the the Altaplex over the Aeon Li, or the Zpack Duplex? I watch all your videos and I'm torn which single wall tent to try. I love the look of the Aeon Li, but performance and reduced condensation is ultimately what I'm looking for vs looks.
My Coleman 2P Sundome takes less time to set up than all your yakking in this video. It uses 2 tensioning poles that fold into 8 sections pulled together by a light bungee cord in the core. It has a waterproof bathtub floor and an awesome rainfly allowing me to keep both fully-screened side windows open. A fully screened D-door has dual-side zippers. Those two self-tensioning rods allow you to pick up the whole tent FULLY-DEPLOYED and relocate it in a jiffy, something you can never do with your "perfect tent." I hate tents taut-lined to pegs staked on the ground which ALWAYS come loose in the middle of the night or during a downpour. And about the little job of setting it up--well, dude if you can't spare FIVE lousy minutes to set up a tent maybe you shouldn't be out camping at all.
Awesome job making a company bring back a tent that the market demanded...who would have thought it would take such a Herculean effort to get a company to bring back a very popular profitable product!! Only issue...perfection is in the eye of the beholder. Some of us use out shelters in vary conditions...not sure I could live with the rain storm in side my shelter again. Double wall please...”Sir may I have summore? “
There is a distinct lack of plus size female hiking clothing. Would love to see more extended sizes for women to wear. I'm a UK 22-24 (US 18-20) and there are 2 brands that I can choose from and they're usually sold out in my size.
Darwin, man that tent is the complete opposite to what I need, however, I absolutely love your enthusiasm, enjoy it! kind regards, Peter Bennett, Victoria, Australia.
I have the perfect tent! Sadly it also is discontinued. Cuben SoLong six by Lightheart Gear. I love this tent so much. Judy really should consider bringing this tent back into production. .75 cuben,108 inch inside and full 1.5 person so all my gear has plenty of room inside. This tent is bombed tough. Five thousand miles and counting.
I‘m only 5 ft. 11 in., so my Duplex is still fine by me, even with a thickish air pad (can always sleep a bit diagonally if needed). But for taller folks like you, this looks like a godsend! The only thing that has me wondering is how the added height and steeper pitch might affect its performance in high winds. Might it catch more wind and bend a lot, perhaps putting a lot of extra load on the back guyline or the front pole? Might that lead to stakes pulling out under windy conditions and poor substrate? Or, even worse, might gusty wind put excessive strain on the that single (carbon!) trekking pole? After all, carbon normally doesn’t love lateral forces too much. The other question is what happens if your one pole breaks on the trail. Finding a stick that’s sufficiently strong and available in that longish length might be challenge in some locations. Of course, the trekking pole can snap during normal use, too, creating the same stick-finding challenge. I often hike and camp in areas devoid of trees, e.g. the middle of Norway (Dovrefjell mountains). So losing a pole would be a major disaster, especially with civilization about 3 days away on foot. Breaking a pole would mean having to tape it someone, but then it might not be stable enough for the extreme winds that can whip up in such mountains. All in all, I wouldn’t trust the Altaplex under such conditions. (To be fair, though, the Duplex is also a bit iffy for that kind of use, but at least its wind profile is lower.) So please update us on wind performance when you have a chance. Thanks for the great content! :-)
what would I want in the wild? hmmm. It probably exists somewhere, but I had to make/improvise a dog bed/mat. Used one of those windhsield foil reflectors and cut it up to the right size, and I will use it with a fleece plaid. A compact, foldable/ compressable, easy to clean cushioned dog sleeping mat with a reflective layer to isolate off the ground is ideal. its what I really want. Another thing I concidered is buying one of those foldable mats for adults with a reflective side and cut that... but jesus. Most dog mats are cooling mats, or theyre MASSIVE AF and like never has a reflective side/layer. and a dog want to lay a little soft, and a husky wont be cold in a tent even in winter.... if its isolated from the ground! The bare ground will suck even their heat off. they can lay in the snow... because the snow insulates them. but on bare cold ground? no they cant. Ever made a snow cave as a kid? its suprizingly cozy in those, because you are insulated and sheltered. just bare icy/frosty ground under the sky? yeah that is cold as heck. snow? not so much.
Hi Darwin, I am even a little taller then you (1.96m). I use the Tarpten double rainbow which has enough space for me. May be an idee for next year. Greets, Leon van den Biggelaar, Holland

@@DarwinOnthetrail just kidding! the altaplex looks like a great tent though
Eeeeek!
Not a tent but has anyone considered an updated version of the external frame pack? Small Titanium frame - DCF combo? Soft internal frames are just not as comfortable when carrying lots of water and food.
good stuff, I'm 6' 4'' and I really struggle to find a lightweight tent that's also big enough.
6'1" and having trouble? Imagine being 6'8".
At 6'8" everything is custom!
I contacted CNOC. It is pronounced KA-NOCK.
Hard K. It’s Gaelic or Irish meaning hill or mount. It’s in their About Us tab on their website.
@darwin I think most of your followers wouldn't care if you're sponsorshed as long as you are transparent and honest about the reviews
Yeah, but I care. I play by my own rules & no one owns me 😉
@@DarwinOnthetrail so if I could convince my client (a leading hiking/trail shoe manufacturer) to sponsor your AT hike for $200k you'd turn it down....dang that's some morals. I'd totally sell-out.
Voting with your dollars. Your commitment, talent, influence, and actual dollars have improved a community. I certainly appreciate your effort. Thanks Darwin!
There wasn't any voting involved though?
Any chance you’d show us a step by step on how you pitch it? Never done a trekking pole tent before...
Lay it flat
Stake it out/guy lines as needed
Insert pole
It's really that easy.
I'm 6'5", does anyone know if I will fot length-wise (xlite + 20f bag) in a zpacks pocket tarp? I could add pull out on end panels.
I don't know how someone could give you a thumbs down. Haters gonna hate. I appreciate all your content, thanks for what you do!
Can you recommend a BUDGET clone of this?
After looking at this tent for over a year, and a major tent fail on a recent Winds backpacking trip, I bit the (cost!) bullet and placed my order.
But will they make them again? Is it rude to ask what it cost. Lol and you answered me. It's on the website now. That's $875 aud. Wow
Hi Zpacks company! I am buying this tent just because of this video! Just so you know.
For a product they should make... I'm a side sleeper and would love an INFLATABLE BODY PILLOW.
Wow, it's cool that you are able to influence these manufacturers on our behalf. Our voices are heard! Full stop!
Anyone know how packable this tent is in comparison to the duplex?
SoloMid? What is this a League of Legends camping tent?
It would be cool to have a wind breaker that transforms into a tent all Cuban fiber 🤣
Can you throw up a link to those Carbon trekking poles? I can't find any that are long enough. Thanks.
stay away from them, carbon shatters where dural/alu will flex, maybe buckle a little.
Darwin! I am late to the show, but you're getting good at this CGI thing. Big thumbs up!
I’m guessing since I just got an email about the Altaplex that it’s the one for you. Or made just for you!!!
Thank you for sharing this! Always good information and you are fun to keep up with!

This is awesome news. Now all I need is $585 😂
Me Too! 😂😂😂
9:20 he had to do it to em
Hi Darwin,
I am even a little taller then you (1.96m). I use the Tarpten double rainbow which has enough space for me. May be an idee for next year.
Greets, Leon van den Biggelaar, Holland
I note you haven't listed stability in wind among your priorities/requirements for The Perfect Tent. Have you already forgotten how your ZPacks Plexamid failed in windy Scottish conditions last year?
Nice try. It was a far-away green screen.
