Not being a Finn myself, I have a close Finnish friend. So my piece of advice would be: invest in a Finn if you want to get him or her as your friend. By investing I mean involving in the person's world, doing some good stuff for the person, helping that person, etc. So that he or she finally sees that they are important for you. Try to talk on substantial topics, about smth that interests both of you. Give him or her some nice presents made with your own hands. Have fun, laugh a lot and you'll get the best friend you can ever have. And never give up. It really takes a while until they appreciate what you are doing for them. And it feels like they have icy hearts at the beginning but it is totally untrue. So you have to work hard on that but it will definitely pay out XD

I have a universal way of making friends in general. Food, an icebreaker, and bringing a basic game like a deck of cards, board game, or dominos. I personally bring dominos since it's not as competitive and the pieces are replaceable.

Great idea! Playing something is so easy way to be with people natural way. After doing it few times, you can start to know people you play with better. Suits to Finns very well. Starting with talking only can make Finns a bit intimidated. It's like "why that stranger keeps talking to me, what does (s)he wants.." Someone to play a game with? I'm in.

The US is a country built on Immigration. They do say that history repeats itself, aye. Good for other humans who are trying to thrive. That is all, lol. And fuck trump and anyone that is ignorant like many Americans

I've lived in Portugal for 5 years and I know what it's like to be in a foreign country alone with no friends. I was lucky and created a lot of friendships there. But it was very difficult in the first years , and it even reflected me mentally. Something that worked for me in Curitiba, where people are not exactly friendly, was to walk with my dog on parks and squares (squares here look like very small parks, with lots of trees and grass). As your example of going with kids to the playgrounds, I think it works well. And many years ago, before social media exists, I met a nice finnish guy on the internet who taught me a lot about finnish music and a bit about finnish culture too. I’m abandoning social media, but internet is a nice “place” to start talking to new people and also to develop friendships a bit better as it keeps us closer even if we don’t have time to meet often in person. Great tips! Enjoy your vacation!

You are naked in the sauna. Kotiharju for instance has one floor for men and another for women and both cool off together outside in the front wrapped in towels drinking beer or cider. If you start talking to somebody, there are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby to meet afterwards. I have never seen people wear clothes in a Finnish sauna or Swedish bastu either, private or semi private ones can be mixed, but still, I have seen no clothes.

Alexi, one more question. Given in mind the common shared past between Finland and Russia, how do the Finns deal with Russian immigrants? Is there any special treatment for them?
I live in Bulgaria and there are many Russians here. We, the Bulgarians, have a rather polarized attitude towards the Russians.
A part of us loves them a lot, while another part does not tolerate them at all.
And the most unpleasant thing is the Imperial thinking of the Russians.
They come to your own country and behave as if you owe them something. They treat you almost as a servant.
On the contrary , the Ukrainians are very nice and humble people , and I like them a lot.
