You know what.. I believe people with real issues will understand when I say this song should be listened to when, literally, having a bad day. Grab your headphones, close the blinds, and just run this on repeat. The beauty of it helps. It really does.
***** what an arrogant and uninformed opinion you have there. this might come as a shock to people like you but sometimes, the problems we have cant be solved without powerful drugs that don't just help with the problem, but create new ones. I would rather be anxious all the time, then feel nothing at all
It's just a personal opinion, I think nobody is aiming to solve all the cases of depression in the world with a song. Any way your solution may be valid for some (try helping out someone with depression getting out of the house and run and sing along, kudos to you) and really worthless for others. As the common sense should tell you, we're not all the same.
Hey child, things are looking down that's okay you don't need to win anyways. Don't be afraid just eat up all the grey and it will all fade away. Don't let yourself fall down.
I discovered this song in 2008 at a perfect time cause I was holding a knife against my chest and then this song popped up randomly on UA-cam, I listened to it broke down and then I replayed it a bunch and now I’m here. You are a freaking hero Patrick! Thanks for the beautiful song!
@Drew R: Me Too, I 1st heard this album in 2008! Check out my other comment above this one. This whole Album helped me through a breakup, 10 & more years & more out of this Life. Peace.
“It’s okay you don’t need to win anyways” is one of the greatest lyrics penned in our lifetime. That is some deep, DEEP metaphysical truth and a harsh but important lesson in everyone’s life.
Yeah...this is a lesson that everybody has to learn in his life, soon or later. I learned it when I reached my 30 and I literally collapsed. Now I see so much beauty in life.
This song really gave me perspective on coming back from depression. "Don't be afraid just eat up all the grey and it will fade away." I was looking for something to bring me back to how I once was, a way out. Yet there is no great great escape, there is no such thing. At least not in the way you might think. The great escape is a long process, not breif. It could be as simple as putting a smile on your face everyday and appreciating all the things you have
lyrics: Bad day, looking for a way home, looking for the great escape. Gets in his car and drives away, far from all the things that we are. Puts on a smile and breathes it in and breathes it out, he says, bye bye bye to all of the noise. Oh, he says, bye bye bye to all of the noise. Doo doo doo doo doo noo noo Doo doo doo doo doo noo noo noo noo Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo Doo doo doo doo doo doo noo noo noo Hey child, things are looking down. That's okay, you don't need to win anyways. Don't be afraid, just eat up all the gray and it will fade all away. Don't let yourself fall down. Doo doo doo doo doo noo noo Doo doo doo doo doo noo noo noo noo Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo Doo doo doo doo doo doo noo noo noo Bad day, looking for the great escape. He says, bad day, looking for the great escape. On a bad day, looking for the great escape, the great escape.
When I was 15, I dealt with an eating disorder and depression. Every time I tried to calm down, I put this song, resting in my bed or walking to school. Not only did it eased me, but it gave me hope and joy. I could actually visualize a future where i was better and, most important, happy. This song _was_ my great escape and it will forever have a special place in my heart.
Well.. I'm here because my dad recently discovered that I have an unique taste in music, so he gave me some CDs he thought I'd like and Wooden Arms was one of them. And here I am: listening to the other songs Patrick Watson wrote. :)
There are a few singers/musicians in this world that have this one of a million touch in their voices that just melts you from the inside, and yes Patrick Watson is one of them.

I've been listening to this album for the last 7 years or so and it never gets old - and this song in particular makes me feel the same as when I heard it for the first time...
funandlala when bad things happens, you can only go day by day hoping that pain will slowly go away...but know I know that you can only learn to live with pain..my dad lives throw this song..thank you
I used to listen to this song repeatedly in my eighteen, trying to find a way out from a toxic relationship. It always put a tender smile on my face when I listen to it now
Levon Degennaro I sincerely hope you find them, because you deserve to be happy and loved. That person will find you and you'll find them, and I wish you the greatest happiness in your future.
This really is my great escape from the real world and i say the realest and most cruel one there is, so for that thank you patrick, thank you for being my second world, where i can relax even if its just for about 5 minutes.
This song has eluded me for a decade. Quite possibly the greatest song ever written. Found this song via a Spotify advertisement for noise cancelling headphones. never listened to an ad that much before. I knew it was Watson from To Build A Home. NEEDED to find it.
So beautiful. I've been struggling a lot lately in my life, between my own thoughts and others opinions, and this song makes me smile even though it's slightly solemn. It does however help me remember that thee is a great escape and I just need to look.
This song was 13 years ago when I was just 1 year old and now listening to it how my parents have raised me in 14 years till now. Love your parents pls
I thought I understood the meaning of this song when I first heard it in 2015. I was wrong. This song is what it feels like to live through a global pandemic at the age of 21. So much unknown, so much lonely, so much grey. But I'm taking it day by day and finding escape in the things that I'm passionate about. One day, things will be okay again.
Sometimes we get closer to the end of our book but it is our decision whether we end it with our blood or with the most colorful memories, even if they are painful, continue to write the book for those we loved for those we hated for those who we miss to show them what they have taught us that they see that they have shown you to love no matter how dark the day was but to finish the book too quickly removes us from the loved ones who may also finish their book too early and not write the colorful story of your life to the end of what I want to say of what you love and the story you want to hear one of your loved ones
This reminds me of my son and our trip with Grandma and Grandpa to Ontario in the summer of '08. Miss you kiddo....I hope you are well and that we meet again someday.
The pathos in this song is so thick you could cut it with a knife. Or maybe it's just Patrick Watson, who could take any words and make you choke trying to hold back tears as you listen to how he voices them. Simply beautiful.
I've been trying to find this song for years. Kind of. I heard it in Struck By Lightning and it practically killed me. God this song went great in the movie!

One day I was looking upon myself
Many years of smiles and tears had left me tired of singing,
Tired of cryin’ tired of tryin, I watched myself dying, moment to moment
Time had passed and the laughter that had filled my glass
Had become indigenous, glowing only to one’s self
thank you to whoever made this song.
So beautiful and sad at the same time…… ❤️
