Just went into BMW today with the wife to trade her X5 for an X3 M40I or X3M but ended up buying one of these in individual Techno Violet!! It was the best looking thing in the show room she does not care for cars but was blown away by the X1 and so was I. Going to look great alongside my M2C and E92 M3.
@@islandknight6105 Initially it felt smaller, which it is. The center console is totally different and the back is more noticeably smaller for passengers. Having said that, it drives so well, it’s fully integrated with voice commands (idrive 9), so much more fuel efficient and more pleasurable to drive. Downsizing with a four person family would be a challenge. I love it.

Yes a fully loaded X1 M35i creeps into base X3 price range, but I much prefer a fully loaded X1 M35i, which is still $10k USD cheaper than a slower base model X3 30i if spec'd with same options.
Unless BMW changed their pricing structure. I remember a fully loaded X1 was a bit more expensive than a base X3. Let alone we are talking about an M lite.
I love mine. It's very fun to drive for a small SUV, and living in a city the size is great. Idrive 9 is definitely a bit of a let down, and I wish the AWD was more rear-biased but other than that it's awesome.

Fantastic video. HOWEVER… you forgot to harp on one thing: where… the heck.. is the shifter?? Toggling actively between S and D while driving has been a signature thing about driving BMW’s - including dropping into Neutral as a primary functions (as do the bespoke M shifters). Now suddenly you can’t do either because it’s all controlled by a knob you would never flip actively while driving??? Such a deal-breaker for this entire generation…

This M variant further bridges the gap between m performance and Full M and dilutes the capital M. You get the front grills in black, winged mirrors in black, M badging steering wheel, m badging seats…. Only thing missing now is M engine other typical M only goodies like M modes, tranny and chassis improvements
I live in PA USA and I 'ordered' a red X2 M35i like in the video, but with every available package and option. A bit over 60K USD and what I thought, given all the hype, was a great deal. Shifted down a notch from my fully-equipped X3 M40i. Ordered early December 2023. No information available on its build and delivery status until early May, when my dealer informed me that the model (?), my configuration (?), any X2 (?), would be provided to customers in the US. No information from BMW area or corporate as to the reason. I checked dealer inventories from Boston to LA and found only a few low-end "lot cars" - mainly non-Ms, two half-equipped Ms. Does anyone know what's going on? A flaw found at the last moment? Baltimore? Robots on strike? Well, if I order another Bimmer. it'll be a 2025 X3 M50, so I can go down to my home state and pick it up. No ocean to cross. Help.

I have this car... but on the dash there is an option to show Power... but it is not a MHT.. that is ok but it goes into in Minus battery charge... and sounds like a diesel when you accelerate hard.
Amen. That generation of X1 was the best one BMW ever built. Not only was it RWD-based but also built on a sedan chassis and raised, rather than a compact SUV. So wish they would have repeated that formula and just modernized it. 😢
It's just a good looking car (outside). Except that is a FWD platform developed with PSA as i remember. Is nothing about BMW, as the S3 is nothing about Audi and A-class about Mercedes. Could be fast or slow, it remains "a thing" which in my opinion isn't either horse or dog, but something between them 😂. It's just BMW LOGO offered for some woman's which knows about cars only brandname and colour.. You’re not wrong lol. I drove one and I knew I wouldn’t be blown as I own an M4 and X3M. I completely forgot this was FWD bias and pretty much a dressed up mini. It’s got a lot of features and styling going for it but fresh off the lot, it drove like half the bushings and chassis bolts were loose. Nothing BMW-like in how it drives. That’s the purpose I guess. Entry level, quick enough, luxury badge. Not going to get everything. Unfortunately the one I drove wasn’t for sale and I ended up buying an Audi Q3 for my lady. I hate the way the Q3 drives more than this😂.

I’ve been holding on to my 2014 328i Touring and now looking dropping the next $20K into rebuilding the engine w/ forged internals rather than getting any of the G-generation cars, since it’s such a great daily driver and nothing BMW has put out since matches it on either looks nor driving dynamics. I think with forged internals you really could have a performant, modern 4-cylinder that also has lower weight (~100lbs for 2 less cylinders). Would take them back to the roots of what BMW’s were all about, having the cake and eating too. I just think it would canibaliza their real M cars since what could you sell as a differentiator if not more cylinders?
@@mbradeaI hear ya. When I heard we were getting a new X1 and there would be an M version of it, I assumed that at least meant a B58. I got excited. Something tiny yet practical with amazing tuning potential. That’s exactly how I ended up getting my X3M. These came out as a M35 and although I love the styling and interior, I just can’t get with how it drives. It’ll probably make great power tuned but still won’t feel right. To be fair it doesn’t drive terrible. It feels like what it is. A primarily FWD 4cyl with a peaky power band and a toned down DCT that’s still about as smooth as my M4 was before I did the GTS transmission flash. Better than the competition but after owning BMWs for the last 12 years, 3 non Ms and 3 Ms, I just realized this isn’t for me as a daily or weekend car or road trip car. Spent another 20k and got a X3M that blows my mind. Hold on to that 328 though. Last of its kind.

It’s just an over-branded X3 with a weight-to-power ratio equivalent to a 328i/330i F-series It’s nice don’t get me wrong. But nowhere close to an M car. I think it would be the ultimate formula for a modern M car that also has the utility people need in their lives (ie: that crossovers / compact SUVs uniquely bring)

Of course, comparing it to ANY modern 2024-25 generation BMW is akin to comparing a P-51 Mustang to an F-35. Both are great for their time, but not really comparable. Enjoy your ride.
Engine placement is irrelevant to the transmission & how much power is delivered to the rear wheels. It is rear wheel biased, not front drive slip then transfer power to rear. The engine layout only means it has a heavier front weight distribution.

Transverse front wheel drive based, so the DCT is the only solution. It’s fine in sport mode but totally unacceptable in any other mode.

@@soneu234 engine placement is important only in weight distribution not power transfer. That’s entirely dependent on the transmission.

@@soneu234 you can have transverse engine with 100% power to the rear wheels. An inline 4 would cut into the interior space, necessitating a longer wheelbase & vehicle.
That would make it an X3.
