- After hundreds of miles in the new high-po BMW X1, we'd happily take it for a spirited romp, but we couldn't choose it for highway duty.

After this review, I’m glad to have the regular X1 with 18” wheels, all the amenities for about $15K less. Who needs that 0-60mph about a second faster??
Hope you enjoyed driving in my neck of the woods, Charlie - gotta say, BMW did an incredible job with that update; I’ve seen a few on the roads and they grab my eye every time. Definitely miss the days of a plethora of smaller SUVs (and cars) with decent output numbers/larger displacements.
Your review sums it up well. I had my brand new X1 M35i for a total of 6 weeks then decided it really wasn't the car for me. Like you, there are aspects of the car that I like however the roll back when pulling away on a hill is shocking, even with the auto brake on. Add to this the hesitation when leaving a junction, the ridiculous iDrive 9 issues and generally not a great driving experience and it wasn't I car I could live with. Changed into a new M240i XDrive and could not a happier. What machine!! I only lost £1k on swapping out so not too bad considering. I would urge anyone to test drive the X1 or X2 M35i before committing. I've had 6 BMW's now (not counting the X1) and they have all be exceptional. The X1 sadly isn't in the same league.
Glad you were able to get out from under it without much penalty! 2 series is much more classic BMW
ooo massage seats! The new X3 is going to be noice!
For $5000 less one can have the larger fully loaded Acura RDX A-Spec Advance. It may be a BMW but it still looks like a tiny SUV with economy roots.
I own this car and it’s a fantastic truck. It is smaller than some people may need but for me it’s unbelievably fast and perfect.
@@joestella2083”truck” 😂😂😂
Change the steering wheel settings if it’s too sensitive.
After watching this review for the BMW X1 M35i, I have another reason to be glad I bought a 2022 Hyundai Kona N for < $35,000. I've had absolutely no problems with the drive train, and its wet 8-speed dual clutch transmission is really sweet.
Love the Kona N, so sad they're done, you got a gem!
I have the 18 inch wheels on mine and the red m seats I find it comfortable but definitely agree with the sound of the road but it doesn't bother me with the sporty feel
i got m35 x1 , wish it was off x3 platform and had more horsepower
I owned a Kona N for a year. I test drove this car and there is no comparison, the Kona drives better and sounds a million times better. Save your money, trust me.
But it’s a Hyundai.
I was so excited for the X1, but just do not trust the dual clutch transmission long term as a daily driver. Every review for this car mentions it's problems and I feel like it would be a maintenance nightmare out of warranty. They alllmost had a home run on this one.
Sadly it seems like a lot of cars these days would be good for leasing but not long-term ownership.
@@powrich12 Manufacturers are using them in interest of fuel efficiency but are not as reliable.
Charlie, Did you say $59,000 for a glorified Mini?
I love how many ppl complain about prices as if inflation didnt happen. The “mini” that this is based off has a starting MSRP of 47k (50k for the X1 M35). The days of sub 40k 4 cylinder turbos are over.
This BMW is a front wheel drive, transverse engine setup. That’s why the ZF8 transmission could not be used.
Right, thanks
Too bad this DCT is what they went with. lol
It’s literally an XDrive SUV
@@esco.letsgoWell yes obviously it is an xdrive branded system. But unlike the bigger or in some people’s eyes “real” BMWs, this one’s engine sits sideways over the front axle, and the driveline inherently provides more power to the front. Just look under the hood and under the car.
Not FWD…AWD muppet
My wife and I had a loaner 2024 X1 recently while my wife's X3 was in for service. We had it for about 5 days. While I like the overall interior spaciousness and ambient lighting, I agree with you on the transmission and the comfort. Even in the base-model X1 xDrive28i, the car takes AGES to get off the line. It's honestly unacceptable. Besides that, the stop-start is a little too eager to shut the engine off, and the ride is too stiff. I couldn't honestly recommend it to anyone. Just buy an X3 instead.
Also, are you certain it didn't have heated seats? I thought our X1 didn't have them, but they are buried in a menu.
You are critical about a single driving mode without mentioning that it’s configurable
I couldn’t disagree more on the ergonomics. I’m 6’ 2” and most cars don’t have enough headroom and vision is obscured by low sloping roofline. The adjustable bench is also a major plus! This is the most comfortable car I have driven other than the X5! Transmission, yeah not a fan.
