I had one of the first off the production line back in April. Got rid of it after 6 weeks and swapped it for an M240i. The M35i was a disappointment. Too many software issues, rolling back when pulling away, slow response pulling out of junctions, the dual clutch is awful. The M240i puts a smile on my face every time I get in it.
@@JoeAchilles1 I had such high expectations but it's not up to BMW's usual standard in terms of driver experience. It just feels too average and doesn't deserve an M badge on the car.
And this is why you should never buy a "BMW" which is actually a Mini in disguise. Stick to the ones with the engine mounted longitudinally, otherwise you aren't getting the real thing.
@@Manakuski very true. It’s a mini JCW platform and drive chain. I’ve had 6 different 3 series cars ranging from a 330i coupe to 320d’s and a 325d. They’ve all been great cars. The X1 didn’t feel like a drivers car at all. The M240i Is just in a different league.

£60k for this is absolutely criminal. So much other car you can get for your money especially if you go over to VW. Can get a nice 22pkate x3M with around 15-20k miles for around £55k. Essentially getting a suv m3 with more space. This is crazy for the price.

Great review as always! Don't know what they are smoking in München (DSG, getting rid of the „i"), but I guess they should start drinking Augustiner beer again!
I found the complete opposite with the x2m35i, fast and snappy on down shifts but a huge delay on upshift. Better off leaving the box in d or s mode sporty driving. Hopefully it can be improved with further over the air updates?
I have a 4 month old X2 M135i on 21" alloys... gearshifts are rapid on both up and down shifts.... The gearbox is as quick as my previous G20 2021 M340i with the 8 speed ZF gearbox but not as silky smooth, most noticeable around town at slower speeds but not been an issue in the 2 months I've owned the car
If you wear polarised sunglasses apparently you can’t see head up displays like on this car where it projects the image onto the screen. But you can see the ones where they reflect the image onto the screen.
@@Staniii2360 Bit of a design flaw with the HUD's. Many would rather wear polarised sunglasses so they can see better when driving then see a HUD, so long as they have dials etc to see instead.
That's why I stopped getting polarized sunglasses. Can't read my phone screen either (when I'm not driving). Polarized glasses aren't enough better to make seeing everything impossible. 😂

Nice at certain places Joe The way the boot cuts into the lights is ruining my OCD 😄 And the badge fonts make it look like someone got a basic bmw and bought an M badge n Halfords and stuck it on
Now try an X1 30e it’s a real surprise with more power than this and more power to the rear than the front. It’s heavy but it exits corners beautifully. It also has a great three cylinder growl.
Okay now what about lessons learned: extent de nose/bonnet, put the engine in the proper direction and drive the rear wheels, the F20 is/was a gem. That said you can then add the ZF 8 speed. I got the ix1-30 as a company car also overpriced ad 65k and today I bought myself a proper BMW: F36-440i with the B58 6 cyl.
I tried an X1 M35i earlier this year, and I was indeed disappointed by the gearbox, and also by the lack of torque compared to my 2021 M135i. I'm not sure what my next family car will be. Currently, I'm leaning more towards an Audi RS3, for example. I'm waiting to see the new M135 F70 to see how it turns out, but I have doubts that they'll be able to fix that gearbox. I'm also 'glad' that you noticed the same thing because I thought maybe it was just me being a bit picky, but no, that gearbox really isn't great.
Given the choice between an RS3 and the new m135i, the Audi would have without doubt. Sold my 2022 m135i as it just didn't excite me, and my circumstances changed, so I went for a fully loaded Z4 m40i
I'm seven minutes in and it's already your best review, mole rats and the GT85 ad-brilliant. Joking aside, that's how you do a true added value promo, this is what it does, here's me showing you it works, try it. Well done.
We have one of these in Individual Purple Metallic we traded our X5 and love the car. We also own M2C and M3 but as the family car the M35I does a great job and gets more attention than our M cars😂
Can you do a video on every tech/spec the X3 & X5 have that this X1 doesn’t have because this car is packed with quite a lot minus the engine situation.
I have the X2 M35i and can honestly say I do not miss the idrive controller whatsoever... I've had them in 5 of my BMWs but the idrive 9 is so intuitive and easy to use its not missed. Just my opinion though, everyone is different !
Thanks man! And yes I spotted that an hour before it was going live, didn't have access to my laptop and it needed to go live as agreed with GT85, my OCD has been going mad since 😂 Glad you're the only person to comment about it so far 🫣
I think I know about BMW is that even if the engine capacity looks like a bit small compared to the likes of X3, or X5M it can still challenge many cars in terms of performance
Hi Joe! I've had this car for 3 months now, almost 4kkm driven, your intitial review a year ago got me really excited about it and I've got one, I've switched from an Audi Q5 because I wanted something more driver focused and I have to say that I love the car. It's my daily driver so it had to be comfortable and smooth most of the time for city traffic etc. so I really don't mind what they've done with the gearbox, in normal mode it goes from a stop really gently, passengers really appreciate it :D As for the torque steer I've almost instantly fitted it with Michelin PS4S and it pretty much solved the problem, original tires are too weak for the car. I think that for most people it will be a very enjoyable car, certainly is for me, it's miles better for a driver than any "normal" SUV like my Q5 was, where steering feel was totally non existant. Here you can really push it in corners in any speed you want and it goes like it was glued to the road. Performance is also very nice, for sure is quicker than the numbers suggest. A car like this needs to basically master two personalities, for daily use and for thrashing it on a B road and I think this one does it pretty well ;)
You shouldn’t have to buy a brand new set of tyres on a new car simply to get it to handle properly. That’s an £800 or £900 extra. BMW should fit decent tyres on all their cars.
@@adrianbennett3761bmw has a summer tire package that unlocks the 135 mph limiter. If you get the summer tires they are a lot better than the all seasons. I have the continental dws 06plus all seasons which are very sticky.
BMW just haven't been able to replicate the 'M' magic of their rear-drive base platfrom cars in their front-drive platform cars, which is a bit odd since the bread and butter versions of the 1 series FWD hatch are well regarded; just not the sporty versions!
Interesting re the torque steer, thought they would have that sorted. I have Cupra Formentor no hint of torque steer. The front will sometimes lose traction but the super quickly transfers power the rear.
Pretty silly comment. BMW made the X1 with a RWD layout and available with an I6. It did not sell as much as the second generation (maybe due to the polarizing looks of the OG had) so I am not sure the people buying these care!
@@AgonxOCNot the point. The reason why BMW is such a prestigious company now, and they’re considered “good to drive” is because they have stood by their morals and USP for the last 50 years. Why would anyone choose this over a Tiguan…
Loss of torque is due to the swap of gearbox from the 8 speed Aisin auto to the 7 speed DCT. The DCT is not capable of handling 450nm. I would say the loss of horses is a shame but not as big an issue as the loss of 50nm which will be more noticeable
I have X1 M35i since January 2024, i bought it for few reasons: 1) price, it's cheap. 2) it's really well loaded and has lot of options, You have panoramic roof, M Sport Breaks (4 or 6 pistons), seat massage/MSport Seats [You can't have massage seats in x3, x4, M5!, M3, M4 etc but You may have them in X1!, let of tech options like adaptive LED, not bad audio, etc. 3) looks perfect, i have the same paint, satin paint showes curveture of the car and makes it more aggressive. 4) ///M quad exhauts pipes, m mirrors etc. I'm pretty happy with X1. And i'm not saying this as a BMW fanboy, i do have few other exotic cars, but X1 was "emotional option" ;)
I was fortunate enough to have had this model for about a week from BMW Aus, and I have to say it was rather disappointing, the torque at 400nm from 450nm is noticeably felt in the mid range when over taking, the torque steer was felt much worse than the outgoing F40 M135i xdrive, and that trans is just terrible jerky at low speeds and over egar in sports. Feel like BMW have missed the mark on this what they should have done was introduced a small 48v system and increase the power and torque to keep the M140 fan boys happy, and something that actually has decent performance.
My test drive yesterday of this Bavarian also revealed a sporty sound and handling. But €69,340 (here in Germany), with all sport options ticked but zero comfort options selected, that’s absurd. Under the body, it's identical to a Countryman JCW which costs a whopping €10,390 less when similarly configured.
Tony Lewis and Tim King are currently throwing their laptop or phone out the window watching this 😂😂😂. Interesting to hear how it is. Definitely wouldn’t wanna spend that money on one! A nice spec and mileage X3 M can be had for 45k now. Much better prospect than this is
Great video! As a current X3 M40i LCI owner I was interested to see if this could be on the list as replacement when mine hits 3 years old. I’d want fully loaded but £60k doesn’t feel great value for a FWD based car, 4 pot with no iDrive wheel! The new X3 M50 mostly fully loaded to my spec is £75k which isn’t great either. After watching Joes video I think however it will be a premium worth paying to get the B58, ZF gearbox, iDrive wheel and better dynamics.
Dear Joe The problem with new M135 (as well as the X1 and X2 fitted with the same power train) vs my recent M135i are exactly the engine and the gearbox de tuned and the torque is reduced because of the double clutch gearbox which is not able to support more than 400 Nm (the Aisin converter gearbox was recently improved a lot and is able to manage more Nm). My last generation M135i XDrive is much quicker and engaging to drive (as you described in your test)
There have been feedback from BMW blog driver on the MIni Countryman JCW ( same car underneath). They also noticed the delay from rest which they hoped BMW would get rid off. However they did not find any issue with the upshift/ downshifts in driving that I recall (also tested by another Utuber). Just wondering if your gearbox has some issue which would account for the torque steer with seemingly no power to the rear axle or incorrect proportions. To me the X1 is really nice but expensive and I like the Mini's quirky looks and its £10,000 cheaper and a maximum 48K with the level 3 pack thats 13k cheaper than the XI in the test. How 4.8 to sixty is really quick and you are, not to rude, heavier that the 75 kg they allow for a driver, due to fact you are very tall.
Cars in 2024 - less car for more £££. I thought new technologies are meant to make things better for the same or less money. If we only improve by constantly raising the price of things then it means progress stagnates. Look at smartphones - every generation now brings only marginal improvements but the price goes up ~10%.
Hmmm the torque steer.... A major problem for some BMW models, especially the 128ti. But we in the Owners Club have found that lowering BMW's insanely high pressures and fitting Michelin PS5 solves it! Maybe it's the same story here?
You should be able to get nav pointers in your M3's HUD. I can get them in my G26 M440i (iDrive 7), and also had them in my F44 M235i. Pretty sure its within the display settings, unless they've changed that for iDrive 8/9.
@JoeAchilles1 Good review, Joe I have a 2024 X2 M35i with almost all the packs on ... I got a very good deal on mine, ex Director’s car. £60k is too much I agree but just second hand is far better. Few comments on the car, naturally similar to the X1 you had - I had 3 years in a 2021 fully loaded M340i Xdrive which was a great car. The ZF 8 speed gearbox in this is much smoother around town than the 7 speed DCT in the X2, but in Sport (Sport) the changes are like you observed v snappy on the upshifts, and in my car are equally as quick on the downshifts. I don't experience any of the delay you experienced for some reason - yes there is some torque steer under full acceleration (and I have 21" alloys on mine!) but it's not obtrusive. What exaggerates the issue is the lane departure pull which has to be reset every time the engine is switched on (could be permanently switched off in the M340i) which is a pain but not unique compared to other new cars or just this model. Annoying yes but without it on the car is significantly better. I have fed this back to BMW - I drive 600 miles round trip every other weekend, mixture of roads but mainly motorway, and I'm averaging 45mpg (although I used to regularly get 43mpg in the M340i) - iDrive 9 is fantastic as you note, and completely negates the need for the idrive controller. I do not miss it whatsoever after having 5 BMWs with it Overall it is a fair review. I've had the car 2 months now and really enjoying, I try not to compare to the M340i with the glorious B58 but it is a really solid daily, with character and more than quick enough with the B48 engine which like you say feels much punchier than 300bhp and 400nm of torque! Cheers PW
I own the car as well and my downshifts are pretty quick. Upshifts are slower. I think he got a reviewer unit that is probably preproduction or it just has issues. The quick drives won’t give the full experience. I test drove before I bought it and when I did I was blew away with how it reminds me of a bmw m sport dune buggy
I also believe the only point for the dual clutch is for off the line acceleration because it feels like the gears are just meant to get the car moving as fast as possible. And it may be a cheaper option for bmw. I like my x1 m35i. After a few years I’m going to trade it for a bmw x3 m50 that hasn’t came out yet.
@@Mglobal.enterpriseyeah agree 👍🏻 I almost got a LCI 2023 X3M, whilst it is a great car I think the idrive 7 feels rather outdated now against 8, 8.5 and 9 in our cars ... very functional still mind. This is my daily. But maybe I’m just used to the transmission. Yes the start stop is bad but I hate stop start in all cars. the mild hybrids do it better. My transmission isn’t as bad as yours I enjoy mine. I believe you got a bad car with issues. But honestly since owned the car it’s pretty fun. remember 30 years ago when BMW made 3 cars? small , medium, large. That method was probably way better for the environment than what car companies are attempting today. ALL modern vehicles are far too heavy. 🇨🇦
I remember thinking exactly the same when I took delivery of an M235i Gran Coupe. Similar recipe. looks great but just doesn’t drive like a BMW. They’re MINI’s dressed up in posh frocks. I suppose this platform sharing is the only way to make these smaller models in the range profitable though. I wonder if the fully electric version is a better drive than the transverse engine layout. 🤔
M35 is an Infiniti, so although it’s an older car Nissan might own it and have a word, if the i vanishes from this. If the controller wheel goes, it’s just a touch screen, not iDrive. DEALBREAKER! Twin clutches are just to compromised unless it’s a sports car. What they’re worst at, is what this car should be doing best. Torque steering? Ah yes it’s not x-drive! It’s a bloody Mini under there right? I don’t mind the look of it though 🙄
That gearbox is evidence that, the accountants are at work, going for an obsolete gearbox to cut costs but charging a premium price on a small car not so good at being sporty or luxurious like its bigger siblings
Just get an x3m40i or lightly used X3M. The X3(Rear wheel drive bias) is the true BMW product imo and shows BMW’s dynamics for those entering into the brand. 🤷♂️ EDIT: as someone told me “It’s just a badge on Wheels”😂
The Hybrid 25e/30e iX1 are much better in the X1, wouldn't get a pure ICE version at all with that gearbox. For most people the hybrids would be cheaper to run and are so responsive it's great to drive everything this one isn't.

Good move, glad you found similar issues to me, how did they get it so wrong?
I really like the way the X1 M35i looks, but I much rather have an I6 if I am going BMW.

Thanks Joe been waiting for this ever since your video at the launch - we literally couldn’t wait and ordered our new X1 M35i and it’s been with us for about 4 months and we absolutely love it - for us as a family it has fitted in brilliantly 👏🏻😉
£60k for this is absolutely criminal. So much other car you can get for your money especially if you go over to VW. Can get a nice 22pkate x3M with around 15-20k miles for around £55k. Essentially getting a suv m3 with more space. This is crazy for the price.

It’s still hard to see and you can’t see all details.

Can you do a video on every tech/spec the X3 & X5 have that this X1 doesn’t have because this car is packed with quite a lot minus the engine situation.
I really like this car, but the lack of iDrive Controller makes me want to get something else! I normally stick to BMW I6.
I have the X2 M35i and can honestly say I do not miss the idrive controller whatsoever... I've had them in 5 of my BMWs but the idrive 9 is so intuitive and easy to use its not missed. Just my opinion though, everyone is different !

I think I know about BMW is that even if the engine capacity looks like a bit small compared to the likes of X3, or X5M it can still challenge many cars in terms of performance
I dont have words to explain this 😂😂😂
Shite, hideous, Expensive... Are those of any use?
I have this car , It’s awesome. No problems so far in 1st 3 months . Feels more torque and bhp.
Hi Joe! I've had this car for 3 months now, almost 4kkm driven, your intitial review a year ago got me really excited about it and I've got one, I've switched from an Audi Q5 because I wanted something more driver focused and I have to say that I love the car.
It's my daily driver so it had to be comfortable and smooth most of the time for city traffic etc. so I really don't mind what they've done with the gearbox, in normal mode it goes from a stop really gently, passengers really appreciate it :D
As for the torque steer I've almost instantly fitted it with Michelin PS4S and it pretty much solved the problem, original tires are too weak for the car.
Good to hear and glad (but not surprised) to hear the Pilot Spots have solved most of that torque steer 🙂
@@JoeAchilles1 BMW should fit them as standard if that’s the case

I notice quad exhausts on a few sub-300PS, which make less sense (particularly certain Chinese cars eg the Geely Coolray which is a B-SUV with 172PS).
I think the Chinese like all that sh*t. And lots of features and gadgets.
BMW just haven't been able to replicate the 'M' magic of their rear-drive base platfrom cars in their front-drive platform cars, which is a bit odd since the bread and butter versions of the 1 series FWD hatch are well regarded; just not the sporty versions!
Lavender oil lovely 👌🏼
Interesting re the torque steer, thought they would have that sorted. I have Cupra Formentor no hint of torque steer. The front will sometimes lose traction but the super quickly transfers power the rear.
A BMW hatchback with a transverse 4 cylinder engine and a duel clutch gearbox. That's it, BMW have absolutely forgotten what a BMW is.
This isn’t a hatchback. It’s a compact SUV
Keep crying pal there’s other BMW models for a reason
Pretty silly comment. BMW made the X1 with a RWD layout and available with an I6. It did not sell as much as the second generation (maybe due to the polarizing looks of the OG had) so I am not sure the people buying these care!
@@AgonxOCNot the point. The reason why BMW is such a prestigious company now, and they’re considered “good to drive” is because they have stood by their morals and USP for the last 50 years. Why would anyone choose this over a Tiguan…
@@gavcom4060They ALL used to be great to drive and fun, only a short while ago.
Loss of torque is due to the swap of gearbox from the 8 speed Aisin auto to the 7 speed DCT. The DCT is not capable of handling 450nm. I would say the loss of horses is a shame but not as big an issue as the loss of 50nm which will be more noticeable
I have X1 M35i since January 2024, i bought it for few reasons:
1) price, it's cheap.

I am also familiar with the Valve on the F Series BMW breaking, thanks to the motor breaking.
Much better prospect than this is
Haha yep not sure anyone or working for BMW will be delighted 🫣 Pre facelift X3M's are flawed in my optinion too, X3 M40i is a much better UK car 👌
Dear Joe
The problem with new M135 (as well as the X1 and X2 fitted with the same power train) vs my recent M135i are exactly the engine and the gearbox de tuned and the torque is reduced because of the double clutch gearbox which is not able to support more than 400 Nm (the Aisin converter gearbox was recently improved a lot and is able to manage more Nm).
Good looking car
8 spd torche convertor is the daddy why would they change it to unreliable DSG good honest review joe
I would have to agree and I own the car. I came from a scat pack which of course has the zf 8 speed. And it was really good
Yes. Finally.
Cars in 2024 - less car for more £££. I thought new technologies are meant to make things better for the same or less money. If we only improve by constantly raising the price of things then it means progress stagnates. Look at smartphones - every generation now brings only marginal improvements but the price goes up ~10%.

While i agree 50k is ridiculous,so is a decent spec ford transit custom. Sad times
Really, whilst using Android auto?
@JoeAchilles1
Good review, Joe
I have a 2024 X2 M35i with almost all the packs on ... I got a very good deal on mine, ex Director’s car. £60k is too much I agree but just second hand is far better. Few comments on the car, naturally similar to the X1 you had
- I had 3 years in a 2021 fully loaded M340i Xdrive which was a great car. The ZF 8 speed gearbox in this is much smoother around town than the 7 speed DCT in the X2, but in Sport (Sport) the changes are like you observed v snappy on the upshifts, and in my car are equally as quick on the downshifts. I don't experience any of the delay you experienced for some reason
- yes there is some torque steer under full acceleration (and I have 21" alloys on mine!) but it's not obtrusive. What exaggerates the issue is the lane departure pull which has to be reset every time the engine is switched on (could be permanently switched off in the M340i) which is a pain but not unique compared to other new cars or just this model. Annoying yes but without it on the car is significantly better. I have fed this back to BMW
- I drive 600 miles round trip every other weekend, mixture of roads but mainly motorway, and I'm averaging 45mpg (although I used to regularly get 43mpg in the M340i)
- iDrive 9 is fantastic as you note, and completely negates the need for the idrive controller. I do not miss it whatsoever after having 5 BMWs with it
Overall it is a fair review. I've had the car 2 months now and really enjoying, I try not to compare to the M340i with the glorious B58 but it is a really solid daily, with character and more than quick enough with the B48 engine which like you say feels much punchier than 300bhp and 400nm of torque!
Cheers
PW
