For anyone who wonders why Steve Johnson has that reaction at 2:06:03 when "Pumpkinhead" is mentioned, here's the thing: Johnson managed to create the backward-bent legs McTiernan wanted by using leg-extension prosthetics and having the performer (JCVD) hanging from an overhead gantry crane in order to take the weight off his actual legs. Things went sour as he details in the interview. However, after he was fired, all the stuff he had made for the film (including the creature suit) were handed to Stan Winston to see if he could make some use of it. Winston, as we all know, went in a completely different direction with "Predator" (effectively going for the "man-in-suit" approach that McTiernan so desperately wanted to steer clear of) BUT, when he made "Pumpkinhead" some time later, he gave the creature backward-bent legs and used a crane to allow the creature performer to actually stand up (I think you can actually see the wire in a few shots on some old, open-matte VHS tapes of the movie). In the second volume of "Rubberhead" (his autobiography), Johnson more or less says that Winston got the idea from his unused "Hunter" creature.
Knew this would be a bit unhinged with Steve, but it's so much crazier that you let him off the leash! This was a great inside to the resiliance one needs in the industry, as well as a bit of its evolution. I look forward to the rest of the series
All 3 hours of this was so fantastic. It was like watching LOTR...you can't believe it is sooo long, yet you don't want it to end. I have the love and desire for creative problem solving and a passion for the film making process, just a shame I don't have the actual sculpting and techniques needed to be included in the business.
That was a wonderfully funny and inspiring interview. Loved it. I'm now really optimistic for a future film landscape filled with practical effects (even if that might not be so evident in the mainstream). Also, can't wait to buy and read Steve's book!
Love how everyone caught onto Steve's Robert Downey Jnr likeness! Now watching Steve's Monster Maker interview - will tentativeley say there's a tiny little bit of Kevin Spacey in there too! (at least in that interview :))
Yeah, he gets that a lot...seriously, even on his own channel he mentions that. He was one of the SFX companies who put forward their own proposal to work on Iron Man (happens a lot, and then the film studio chooses the one they like and go with them), shows his work on their FB page if you want to see it. How cool would it have been for RDJ and Steve to be in the same room? Would confuse the hell out of people, it needs to be said. :)
Glad you enjoyed the show, AlphaProto. Our second broadcast is THIS WEEKEND. Hope you can join us live online. Details here: plus.google.com/events/ce9v084ajf2gn5b4pr19j75hdo0
I'll be buying your book. Good on you Steve for getting it out. And thanks for replying to my facebook message man! All the best. Long Live Slimer. That green glow of his skin is happily burned into the retina of my mind's eye.
Stan Winston School Thanks heaps. It'd mean alot to me if you'd take the time to do that. :). I tried finding Steve's book on amazon. Not there yet... But I'll check once a week or so. Peace.
DravenArts Thank you! Glad you liked it. Steve is, of course, brilliant, hilarious and extremely entertaining to watch - you never know what's going to come out of his mouth! -Maggie
Great 3 hours :-) Really enjoyed it and hoping the Practical FX business can find a place for itself in these rapidly changing times. It faces many challenges, like all creative industries these days, but in the end your can't keep talent and dedication down.
Loved the lead in before Steve Johnson appears at 01:00:30 . Especially the first 2:56, which was seriously motivating, but still wanna timestamp for future ref.... so, yeah, 01:00:30 onwards 😜
I tried to buy the photoset of Phantoms, unfortunaly, I lost the bid because it ends at 3 A.M. Still sad to have not nice close ups of the monster.. I hope it will be indeed some Steve book to come
Watched the whole interview with one setting and was entertained the whole way. As a 80's kid monster movies and practical effects are so much cooler. I really dont understand why the do blood effect with computers, they always look just horrible, but thats just me :) Keep up the awesome work and i really like your attitude temporal agent Matt Winston.
Ha, ha! We sometimes forget about Matt's trekker days. Thanks for reminding us and your kind words about practical effects. We're on your side. - David
:( I showed up too late for the makeup application. Is it going to be available for free on youtube? because right now there's just an hour of previews and then an interview.
yunno, I've watched this before like a year ago....but its only now that I myself vape,...do I finally understand what Steve Johnson is holding is a vaporizer. I wish I knew about vaping a year ago when I first saw this vid. Cuz vaping is 1,000x better than smoking tobacco in every way. more satisfying, tastes way better, and so much more healthy for you.
It's less shit in some ways, but net shitty overall. In a word: cannabis. Don't vape it; eat it if you don't wanna smoke it. I have -smoken- spoken. Now, Shaman, as it is God's will: *_BURY ME IN SMOKE!_*
He's entitled to his opinions but i think that the incredible transformation scene in An American Werewolf in London still holds up remarkably well today. It looks far better and more convincing to me than any CGI transformation i've ever seen.
His hair was _PERFECT._ So what, I hear you say? Oh nothing; just that, there's irrefutably, categorically, objectively no greater glory in the physical realm than the attainment of follicular perfection!!! Samson? Fabio? Dog the Bounter Hunter? Hasselhoff? *_PERFECT_* Frank Zappa? Ming the Merciless? McCartney? *_DEMONIC_* Is the moustache not the eternal affectation of evil? Don't answer, you fool. *_SILENCE!!!_* BIND AND GAG HIM! FETCH the Bowl of Shame and the Scissors of Hilarity. *_SILENCE, I SAY!!!_*
Wow, Robert Downey Jr's talents just dont end do they?
it really is like RDJ based his Tony Stark on Steve Johnson

If you wanna hear them talk about the history of Predator go to 2:00:21 and from there your good
Steve Johnson is AWESOME!!!
Knew this would be a bit unhinged with Steve, but it's so much crazier that you let him off the leash! This was a great inside to the resiliance one needs in the industry, as well as a bit of its evolution. I look forward to the rest of the series
This was honestly the best thing I've seen. amazing interview. very inspirational and hilariously funny!
This was such a great interview! Steve Johnson is amazing!
All 3 hours of this was so fantastic. It was like watching LOTR...you can't believe it is sooo long, yet you don't want it to end.

Thanks Charles Ayala, for the kind words, and for hanging in there. - David
David Sanger and kudos to all your hard work in the industry
What an amazing interview! 3 and a half hours of great stories from Steve.

That was a wonderfully funny and inspiring interview. Loved it. I'm now really optimistic for a future film landscape filled with practical effects (even if that might not be so evident in the mainstream). Also, can't wait to buy and read Steve's book!

Monster Maker Interview with Steve Johnson: bit.ly/SJohnsonIntYT - Adrienn
Love how everyone caught onto Steve's Robert Downey Jnr likeness! Now watching Steve's Monster Maker interview - will tentativeley say there's a tiny little bit of Kevin Spacey in there too!
(at least in that interview :))
We see it too, Stu. - David
How many of these did they make? It’s great.
This was a golden double act! Loved every second of this video guys! Reminds me of the brutal honesty on film production I hear in Kevin Smith videos.
Steve is nothing if not brutally honest. Glad you enjoyed, Stu Nankivell. - David
Stan Winston School
It's official! This is one of those videos I'm gonna keep coming back to!
is it just me or does Steve put u in mind of robert downey jr?
I think it's the hair...and glasses, goatee, eyes, smile..and mannerisms and voice...and...wait! Are we sure this isn't RDJ?
He certainly bears more than a passing resemblance. They should put the two of them in a room and see who emerges victorious

Of course, tony wilson, everyone says so. - David
Wow, I watched all of that! I was entertained the entire time! I wish I saw this live.

Absolutely love this. Nice job.
Why didnt you continued with this concept? Its was great!
Is the audio messed up?
Where is Steve's book? Is is still going to be released at some point?
I tried to buy the photoset of Phantoms, unfortunaly, I lost the bid because it ends at 3 A.M. Still sad to have not nice close ups of the monster.. I hope it will be indeed some Steve book to come
not only does he LOOK LIKE but sound like and has the energy like HIM!
IT IS LIKE A BROTHER..LOL
2:50:58
wasn't Stan's team too busy on Leviathan in Italy to take on The Abyss? not that it was impossible to do. Maybe I'm mistaken.
Amazing :)
whats happening with Steves book?
When does Steve's book hit the stores?
doing Neil Hamburger jokes for an opener! nice

why isn't that version of the Moby video on youtube anywhere? (besides here)
It's on Steve Johnson's own channel.
yellowcougar18, is correct. Also, it wasn't made with Moby's approval. - David

Who can you guess to pass this guy? Only Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp have equal star power as Robert Downey Jr.
A lot of the new star wars film is practical effects
john smith too bad they are now chick flicks.
what are the camera men doing behind the scenes? too busy to pull clips and pictures?
Jesus christ its like a Downey Jr impersonator!
He's more Downey then Downey lol.
