Steve Johnson is incredible. Such a great artist with such a great emphatic passion and highly devoted thrive. Ghostbusters and so many "key-movies" who became huge franchises have been " sculpted " with the deep support of this cool guy and amazing artist.

I gotta disagree. Most of these artists are fully self taught- spending the last 30+ years staring at magazines & BTS photos from Dick Smith, Stan et al just hoping for any insight as to which BRUSHES they used. Outside of Dick's course, which is a series of books and brick & mortar schools, there were NO resources for artists to pick up techniques outside of trial and error. We're hoping to add to the conversation and allow artists to improve on their own. The rest is up to you. -J

22:30 - Changing as an artist... I have never seen it put so succinctly... I have not yet mastered any of the crafts I love so much, (character design, concept painting, sculpture) and often find it too daunting an endeavor to try to throw my hat in the ring... what with technology & competition growing so fast & furiously. But Steve stating how he conquered one passion at a time gives me hope again- Thank you!

I really understand what Rik Baker meant when he said to Steve: "you have the problem solving ability".
There are not many people that have that innate skill and it's not something you can teach (or perhaps I am just a bad master).
I am first and foremost an engineer. And that's what still pays the bills, my IT and Electronics jobs is what the big companies pay for. But this skillset really came into great use when I was a professional musician creating sound effects. Then when I became a mentalist and stage hypnotist it really helped me create tricks to achieve the seemingly impossible. And now I am somewhat of a filmmaker (VFX trained) and there too it all comes down to analysing the problem and breaking that problem into it's tiniest of parts that you can manage.
A few years back I was hired as a consultant to coach and create unique mentalism effects for (now a very good friend of mine) for this show Phenomenon (Next Uri Geller in our country). I was amazed that the technical consultant there was really not a problem solver, just a rehasher of existing techniques in mentalism. And even worse very outspoken against new technologies like electronics -- convinced that they are fragile and break (my argument was for him never to get in his car or a plane again). Well on the show things did break but none of mine inventions did but some of the mechanical effects did break. And I solved problems in a far different way than the other performers did being stuck in that magic mindset.
So our team created some of the most mindblowing effects on live TV.

So you also have that skill and you tried teaching it ? .. That' s creating problems .. Not solving them .. Thus .. A paradox.

I agree. I love how he talked about doing it for love and not money too. Passion often outweighs talent, but ooh boy if you have both you just may be able to Pay your bills doing something amazing for a living.

Totally agree. It really comes down to being creative, problem solving, the ability to team up and accept failure as positive feedback; traits desired when venturing into effects never done before. Sure, check all the boxes in a curriculum and that makes you a student but it is passion that makes you an artist.

but of course every artists developement depends on himself and his interests for improvement despite his education - you can be educated as much as you can but if you do not have that inner drive nothing really happends, but the question was this: when someone comes to a job interview or simply making a job application what are the chances the film industry will recognize his effort and talent if the artist doesn't have a diploma that proves it? How can someone get involved in a project?

What is the official education of these people? I Mean... if someone want's to work in the film industry making behind-the-scenes creatures, effects and etc. it is clearly not enough to buy your tutorials and come to a job interview and say "Yeah I bought me one of these" XD
I suppose many went to art academies to become sculptors, MIT electronics, professional make up artists and alike? I believe that it's almost impossible for someone who's just persistent and talented to get a job without it
