  • Few people have created more iconic cinematic creatures than Stan Winston - whether it’s the dreadlocked, mandible-faced Predator or the towering Alien Queen or the seemingly real animatronic dinosaurs of Jurassic Park, his work is synonymous with some of the most memorable movie moments.
Twelve years after his first film credit, Winston’s career - and status as one of the great VFX practitioners - reached a new level with The Terminator, his first collaboration with director James Cameron, creating the iconic cyborg nemesis. From this partnership bloomed a working relationship that would earn Winston three Oscars: for Best Visual Effects on Aliens, and the Best Visual Effects and Best Make-Up awards for Terminator 2: Judgement Day. (He would also win a fourth, for his groundbreaking work on Spielberg’s Jurassic Park.)
For our opening screening of The Terminator (1984), we got a special message from director James Cameron deep in post-production on Avatar 3, who talked about making the film and his relationship with Stan Winston.

For how old the film is, yes, the effects are really good. For today's standards, nope. You can easily see that the damage on Arnold's face at the end of the film is just a layer on his actual face and not that the parts of his face are missing. Also, the exposed cyborg eye is not moving and is also sticking out too much as if it was actually on Arnold's normal eye. It is just visible way too much. Of course i wasn't noticing it when i was watching the film decades ago, but i do now. And don't get me wrong, i think it's one of the best films ever made, but when someone says that its effects still holds up till today, i just have to say nah, not really anymore. It was just very good for the time the film was made and it did hold up very long. But not anymore.

@@viktorzeman5202 Compare Arnies face to the Dark fates T1000 (or whatever that model was) when he get damage to the face. It looks like shit, the CG is so obvious. Maybe they could make it look better, but they just don't put in the effort these days. The face prosthesis still works better.
In T2 there are many CG shot that totally hold up today. Like when T-1000 head butts through the helicopter window and morphs on to the seat. It's flawless. T-1000 coning out of the floor, perfection.
Of course theres are few shots that look janky by today standards, like T-1000 morphing from silver to normal when walking from the fire at the drainage system underpass but It's still quite the accomplishment with the tech at the time.

His studio is responsible for creating some my all time favourite creatures and characters, and in my teens I went to the cinema strictly to watch the films that he worked on. I cried when he passed. Yes, he was/is that important to me and somewhere inside me I still didn’t get over the fact that I will never be able to meet him and shake his hand. This beautiful little video by James Cameron was so incredibly touching, honest, and insightful. Thank you for sharing it, surely this will be something I will be coming back to again and again.

We NEED a 4k UltraHD Bluray, with a James Cameron/Arnold Schwarzenegger/Michael Biehn/Linda Hamilton/Bess Motta/Lance Henriksen/Brian Thompson commentary and a feature length documentary, BTS materials, almost akin to an Arrow Video release. Better than the scraps from the dvd release we got on the last blu release. Even though I love the effects, a branching version with redone effects would be awesome too (as it's been done well by UA-camRS with Blender, I'm sure Lightstorm, Digital Domain, and ILM can manage it!) I can't believe James Cameron hasn't done a commentary, The Terminator was put into the American Film Archives, preserved for all time ffs. A technically improved version of this absolute classic would be so deserved, properly redone endoskeleton effects, future war sequence, but not overdone to destroy the grungey tone of the story or look. Definitely not "George Lucased". I'd also LOVE a book like The Terminator Vault, but covering all the films from The Terminator to T:DF, SCC series, Dark Horse comics, Robocop VS Terminator, absolutely definitive with input from everyone involved, that would be epic. I'd definitely buy it. Jim's tribute to Stan is heartwarming, honest and lovely.

1:06 This is the first time I hear this story being told like that. In the making of featurette on The Terminator DVD, they say they originally wanted Dick Smith and it was him who told them that Stan Winston would've been better suited for the project. On his side, Winston said that he originally came in a bit pompous because he had been recommended by Smith and so he as "the guy", but he immediately toned down the minute he got to see the designs. Now, we all know most content of that kind is PR from the studios and the industry as a whole (on the same featurette, they fail to acknowledge Donald G. Jackson, the director of "Hell Comes To Frogtown", as the cinematographer who shot a lot of the pick-up footage Cameron personally paid for because the studio didn't want to), and according to some people (*cough*Steve Johnson*cough*) Winston was a primadonna himself, but what strikes me is the "why should I work on your cheap movie?" bit: by that point, Winston was still an up-and-coming FX man. He had done a bunch of stuff, but it was mostly low-budget flicks and was often simply outsourced work from movies other people were making, like "Friday the 13th part 3" and "The Thing" (he did the long-necked dog-creature in the kennel because Rob Bottin and his people were overworked). I am not saying Mr. Cameron is lying (this might very well be the true version of the story: after 40 years, there's no need to "soften the blow"), but it's pretty remarkable that this is a very new account on their legendary first meeting.

The story on that film is bizarre though. He had no creative input on it to begin with, just a director for hire, and was fired after just 2 weeks. Financiers wanted an American director's name on the credits (for marketing I guess?), but the Italian producer wanted to direct it himself and went out of his way to sabotage JC at every turn. It's unknown how much of James' footage even made it into the final cut because when the producer took over it's suspected that he either cut out or reshot most of it.

It barely counts though because it wasn't even his movie to begin with and he was fired after just 2 weeks. The Italian producer didn't want him on the project in the first place and kept trying to sabotage his work, but there was this strange request by the financiers wanting an American director credit (maybe for marketing?). It's unknown how much footage in the released film was even shot by JC because when the producer took over the speculation is that he either cut out or reshot most of it.

i'm telling you, you will kill this franchise if you don't let go of your film making obsessions.
like spending so much time on making the hand strapping scene in the way of water... to make it look ultra realistic while that scene only takes one second or even less.
no one cares about scenes like that.
and also spider grabbing Jakes arm and pulling quaritch out of the water for example... yes those are impressive things, i have now idea how that was pulled off but you don't need it to make a great seguel.
overall the first avatar was way more beautiful and way more impressive.
there is no need what so ever to wait so long for sequels.

    • @tronam

Actually, that hand strapping scene was live action footage! Pretty wild huh? It sucks having to wait so long, but VFX artists aren't cattle. They need time to do it right. Lots of movies got delayed (the pandemic didn't help) and others are now getting delayed for all sorts of reasons, like the actor/writing strikes. Mission Impossible 8 just got pushed to 2025 too along with Dune 2 until next year. 😕

      @tronam 6 місяців тому

You mean the movie he was hired to direct and then got fired after 2 weeks, after which the Italian producer took over and directed himself? Do you honestly consider that his first actual film? If you really want to get anal retentive then you could go even further back, way before Piranha 2, with his first short film Xenogenesis in the late 70s, or when he was director of visual effects on Escape From New York, or 2nd unit director on Battle Beyond The Stars. The reason why he considers Terminator to be HIS first film is because he wrote, designed, storyboarded, and directed it with full creative control from beginning to end. This should be obvious to any reasonably minded person.

James Cameron killed Terminator. He was the writer and producer of Dark Fate. He is the one who suggested killing John Connor right at the start to replace him with a Mexican girl. He admitted Dark Fate was made as a feminist movie. It will be the same all over again if he makes another Terminator movie: writing it as a vector for WOKE propaganda and giving the legwork of directing it to another third-rate WOKE director while he is busy making the sequels of his glorified cartoons Avatar. Seriously, James Carmeron's talent as a moviemaker sank along with the RMS Titanic in his Titanic movie, the last good movie he made.

    • @cw3le

In his defense, he said himself that for him the story ended at T2, which is why he never bothered to return to the franchise. This Dark Fate looks more like a peer pressure from the fan base for him to return to the franchise. So he did, but in a way where he will both earn good money and to make those people stop pressuring him to return to the franchise (because after Dark Fate they surely will stop).
