EVITA ORIGINS Julie Covington to Elaine Paige

- This small clip explains the origins of the Evita concept album featuring Julie Covington as Eva, Colm Wilkonson as Che (1976) up to the world premiere of the original production starring Elaine Paige, David Essex (the only Che to my knowledge to be first billed) and Joss Ackland. Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Lyrics by Tim Rice, Directed by Hal Prince.
The political atmosphere in which Evita was conceived in Britain is a great factor as to why Evita wasn't warmly received in America. The concept album went nowhere and the American reviews weren't particularly kind. Whilst it went on to be a success, something was lost in the transfer. It can be argued that the production became a lot tighter on it's transfer to Broadway, but it lost the edge of the concept album and the the altered (for the better) stage production in London. I don't think the original could ever be recaptured though. If the original cast had made the transfer to Broadway, I wonder how the critics would have reacted to a British cast.

Julie Convington, was my childhood, teenage and adult years as is Elaine Paige. Evita, JCS, and Chess
I wonder how many people have spotted the error at 3:40!
The wrong record! I hadn’t noticed that before.
@@musicalmagpie741 I don't think it's the wrong record - at least, a few seconds later shows what looks like the same record, with the sleeve and so on - but it's definitely rotating the wrong way! (Presumably the clip is backwards.)
@@G6JPG haha right you are! I was staring so hard at the label looking for the album title. I didn’t even think to check which way it was spinning. Well done 🙂👍
I wonder how many caught the error a few seconds before that?
Tim Rice refers to Julie as "Judy" Covington, hehe.
@@rickramos1292 What, at 3:32? I think he says Julie.

The seventies were great. My teenage decade.
Where is this clip from?
Looks like a beautiful documentary!
It was from the BBC’s Imagine series, a sort of arts show. This episode was released around the time of Lloyd Webber’s 70th and in conjunction with the release of his autobiography, Unmasked. If the full thing is up then it’s worth watching.
I saw the Tony awards when they won and I think they sang the Evita during the show. Anyway there was no way the musical was ever coming to where I lived so i bought the concept album. I played it numerous times thinking how the show would look. Many years later I finally saw the show and was very disappointed in the singing and staging.
Hey! Sorry for a late reply. That’s very interesting. I’m a great fan of the concept album too. I’ve wondered how they could stage “The Lady’s Got Potential” that was cut from the show. Which production did you see? Was it a replica of the original? The one’s I’ve seen that changed the direction and sets were pretty disappointing. The Kenwright production that tours the U.K. was a great let down. I wish they had toured the London revival instead. I’d like to hear your thoughts.
It's been years since I have seen Evita on stage. It was a touring group in the US. I am thinking in the late 1980's. One you get hooked on the concept album other versions don't sound right. I remember flying to London just to see Phantom as Evita had already closed. We were so tired we fell asleep half way thru the show.
@@jeep146 A shame you missed the original London production of Evita. I honestly think it was superior to the U.S. productions. I wish they had kept some of rock flavour from Lloyd Webber’s original orchestration on the concept album. As for Phantom - well, my absolute favourite musical. However, I’ve come across many people who really didn’t “get it” or thought the score was boring. I don’t hold a grudge though. Each to their own. 🙂👍
Peron an extremist?
Really?
I couldn’t disagree more.
@@jameslynch7826 why’s that? Just curious.
