    I think the thing that sums up this video is when Colin asked Shaun "if you could have three things back from the house on the boat, what would you have back?" and Shaun couldn't actually come up with anything. I look around my house and garage at all the clutter and stuff and the concept of simplifying and finding that "sense of what makes you happy just change" that Colin talks of. I guess what it comes down to is actually taking that brave step! For me, in a country with no such canal network the options are a "tiny home" or mobile home such as a camper or converted bus/truck etc... or just downsizing the home and getting rid of stored stuff that is not needed. A fantastic piece of real thought provoking content! Cheers lads!

    My late husband and I lived on our boat for seven and a half years, being continual cruisers. Only back on the bank because of serious illness. I miss the community, when husband was first diagnosed and taken into St Mary's Hospital at Paddington we were able to Moor in the basin for months. So many boaters offering help, emptying the toilet cassette, disposing of rubbish offering to get shopping and many other things. I would not have been able to stay by the hospital without all their assistance. Plus British Waterways staff, I was so 🙌

    Brilliant as usual!! You two are the living embodiment of successful narrowboat living. You have a sense of humour (classic British ribald style) and a passionate interest in what life has to offer. You don't sugarcoat the problems and each person has to make the decision based on their life and aims. I enjoy our weekly meetings and look forward to next week. Your "Islands in the stream" story reminded me of something. When my partner and I got married we went on a caravan trip. On our first night married we were in bed doing what newly weds do, and just as we were reaching the vital moment a touring brass band on a neighboring site burst into life playing, "The last post"! It was so funny.

      @@mirandarosman3721 I even googled Australian canals! There's actually more than I realised but they don't connect like the ones in the UK. I'm guessing geography & land mass play a role too. The closest would be a houseboat on the Hawksebury. As for narrowboats I never knew there was such a thing. All very tame & mostly carefree.

    About four years ago, we completed the project to get rid of about 75% of what we owned, and sold our house to move into an apartment. It was an excellent change for us, great to have less stuff, less to maintain, etc. However, the ease you describe of finding a quiet place to moor really makes me wish we could divest of most of the rest of our stuff, because apartments are not very quiet and I really wish we could move as easily as you.

    Colin..... I’m sitting here, watching 2 of my favorite guys (that would be you two!)... and all I hear are lawnmowers. I can’t handle the sound of Lawnmowing and being it’s been rather rainy here, it’s constant!!! I’m screaming inside. This rather nice person is mentally swearing like a truck driver!! Motorcycles, incessant dog barking ( and I ❤️ dogs!!) and loud music where all you can hear is the thumping of the bass..... these are a few of my NON favorite things!! I know you get this and I just needed to vent to someone who wouldn’t think I was being an old bee-itch! Thank goodness for your amazing vlogs that keep me sane! 💟💟💕💕

    Hello Loves! I ALWAYS enjoy your videos - and can't express enough the gratitude I have for your weekly updates. Like visiting with lifelong friends! But I do have a quirky question... you mention fish in the canal, but how do they survive? Does the canal have an upstream/downstream flow? Unless you are on a river, where it is REALLY obvious which way the river flows, the water always looks so still !

    • @FoxesAfloat
      @FoxesAfloat  3 роки тому +2

      The canals are really full of life, they're not the stagnant, polluted waters you might think. They do have a slight flow, this is from water passing through the locks, so the canal does have a fresh constant water supply xx

    I'm sold! If I wasn't living on a tropical island right now, a narrowboat would be on my shortlist of options. Having lived in remote cottages and generally lived the rural lifestyle for most of my adult life, I can absolutely confirm the benefits of the wonderful Englis countryside. Mind you, don't make it sound too appealing, you might find things getting rather crowded.
    Loving you channel guys. Thanks very much and keep up the good work.

    The good certainly out weigh the bad. I would love to live on a narrow boat, but sadly we don’t have the canals in Australia like you have in England, so that puts an end to that idea. I love your flog every Friday and I can see all the beautiful scenery. Great job guys.

    Well, you tried hard on the negatives, and they really were good reasons, but I believe the positives won out. I think, for me, the deciding factors were the slower pace of life and abililty to gain peace and quiet in the countryside away from the rat race and all it's pressures.
    Stay well and healthy both of you, you're becoming my therapy and antidote to the insanity and chaos I and many others live within.

    I've been following you (and catching up on the back catalogue!) for 2 or 3 months now and I have to say how much I admire your vlogs. Always informative and fun and you two are great company but it's better than just that. The professionalism that you bring to these vlogs make each one into a mini TV production with dozens of great shots, brilliant editing, technically great photography and, best of all, you're never boring! I'm sure there are weeks when you really don't feel like doing it but none of that ever shows through. There are narrowboat vlogs and narrowboat vlogs: no names no packdrill, yours are the most professional and the best by miles.

    I would love to live on a narrowboat (Probably based in a marina for most of the time due to work) But as a single person, I'm put off travelling too far. I've had three narrowboat canal trip holidays and loved life aboard the boat, but it was much easier with friends along. One of the best was on the Llanglochlan canal, going over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. The view was amazing. It also made you feel a bit wobbly looking over the edge of the aqueduct, there is the side of your boat and a huge drop. (Keep Otis locked up when you go across :-) ). Still, I'm working out a budget and maybe give it a go for a year or two in the future.
