A mature student I knew at university in the mid 1980s had given up his mortgaged house in favour of buying a narrow boat outright for the three years while he attended college. His plan was to navigate the canals of England during the summer holidays. However, when he set out for the first time, he had only gone half a mile when he found out the boat had been built up and he couldn't get it through the first tunnel. He was trapped on a short stretch of canal in north London!
Funny you should mention the dramatic rise in the price of boats. My mate has taken up building yachts in his loft….. he says the sails are going through the roof 🥸.

Another great vlog thank you, but I do have to admit at the beginning of the post you went under a really low bridge and I found myself ducking so I would not hit my head LOL see you both next week for 10 reasons why you should.
Having hired a boat twice and not having to deal with those problems, except the water stops, we had the enjoyment of the canals and none of the hiccups! A good way to test the waters. Great to hear you mention Guernsey - my birth place and home for 30 years before coming to NZ. Another great vlog and lots of laughs.
Colin, Shaun, Loved this week's Vlog. If I was younger I would have certainly considered a boat life, but can't be doing with climbing up and down lock ladders (I'd fall down everytime). I've learnt a lot watching the Vlogs. Excellent Vlog as always and very well made. Take care.
That was great. I think you need to do an episode on why being a boat tuber is good, bad, and not as easy as it looks. You make it look easy but I know you spend hours coming up with ideas, editing, and researching. I know you have had issues with trolls. I also know that the number of boat tubers seemed to swell for a bit. There is a perception that you can make a full time income, working part time hours by being a boat tuber. I think it would be interesting to hear a summary of your experiences. Did you plan to do youtubing full time? Have you ever considered scaling back because it has gotten so time consuming? How much time do you spend in a week working on recording footage? Editing? How many episodes have you ever had in production at once? How much have you had to invest to produce the quality video and audio content? Do you regret how much of your lives have now become public? Would you do it again? Do you feel that when you started youtubing you journey, the lack of other people boat tubing allowed you to find a niche that had not been filled?
I'd like to know where do you empty the cem toilets I'm sure canal side pubs must get fed up with canal boat people using their toilets to tip away gallons of poo. Also, where do you get your mail sent to? How much does it cost in mooring fee's and is there a cost for staying on the canal itself?. Happy sailing guys.
There are service points all along the canal, our toilets are not emptied in pubs. As for mail, we use a family members address. We don't pay mooring fees, we pay a yearly licence to use the canals and that's about £900 a year for a boat this size of ours xx
@@FoxesAfloat Oh right thanks Ive been wondering about that for a long time if theres service points I had no idea now Im gonna start looking for a boat cheers happy days lads.

We took our first narrowboat holiday just before lockdown and the weather was stunning. The first morning after mooring to a tree, I woke up figuring I'd get an early start, went to unmoor and while untying I found myself pushing the boat away with my feet while clinging to the tree. Absolute panic set in as I didn't know how deep the water was, luckily it was only waist high so I clambered back onto the boat, my missus and children had woke after hearing me shouting "Help!!!. . . Help!!!" My shorts were torn and it was a rude awakening to the perils of narrow boating but it turned out to be one of the best holidays we have ever had.
I always duck when the camera on your boat goes under those bridges. Do you guys have a CO sensor on your boat if so how many and where placed? Thanks!
The camera work on your Vlogs is exceptional fellas. Can’t wait for the 10 reasons why we should live on a narrow boat. Have a great week and stay safe.
I had to get the dictionary out for “Gormless” I have never heard that expression, but now I have and I can’t wait to use it. Great video, I can’t wait to hear the good reasons.
will take the negatives you have said and turn them into positives when i am a liveaboard.. the song Reasons to be cheerful sung by Ian Dury and the blockheads.

@@derektrotter4287 3. True. 4. Not entirely true. I've even operated a sailboat, and been a nightclub bouncer. 5. Could you? I mean, (6.) English humor is sometimes good. 7. Probably untrue. I mean, we would break the speed limit, probably frequently and by a lot. But somebody certainly needs to invent narrowboat drag racing, and it doesn't look like you're going to do it on your own. Come on, you know you want to see what a 1500 horsepower engine would do in one. 8. Don't you Limeys say "full stop" or something?
It is no good, nothing would put me off! I am convinced that this is the life for me. Now, all I need is to win the lottery so that I can afford a boat.

Such a wonderful vlog ! All very good points. I could add one more concern. I agree with the rubbish and “poo” management. But I have always felt an anxiety about managing the locks by myself. I am sure I could probably eventually conquer and mange it. But it does seem quite daunting. Love your vlogs, and look forward to every Friday. Your vlog was the first one I saw concerning narrowboats and you have me addicted. I will probably never be able to experience it as I live in the US and. We don’t have canals that I know of. So I am living my interest in them through you. Thank you so much for letting me in your world !!

Me and the Mrs were paddle boarding the other day. We paddled passed a lovely couple who were moored and had a chat with, we were talking about the prices and what not, as me and my partner are saving for a narrow boat. Then the lady said do you watch the guys on youtube, I stopped her and said the guys on the silver fox? She said YES! Aren't they brilliant? We both agreed and spoke about you guys and your fantastic, insightful videos for a good while. Your ears must of been on fire. You both seem like lovely blokes who it would be a pleasure to meet. Keep the vids coming chaps....your famous now, your fans need you! Hopefully see you on the cut.
That was great, very informative and the videography was stunning. I love the winter shots. Can’t wait for the reasons why. You two look great! And of course Otis does too. Thanks for another great evening. ❤️🤗❤️🤗❤️🐾
I survived 2 harsh winters aboard a narrow boat that was stuck in a marina actually for sale. Damp and condensation were 2 main downsides, obviously the cold, we went through bottled gas at an alarming rate, very expensive back then, even more I guess now? Was very warm while the gas fire was on but as soon as it was off back to cold very quickly, I guess lack of insulation? I did find a mains point and must say that made a big difference, oh the dry heat I got from that little fan heater was incredible, left it on low at night under our bed, woke up with my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth! But the boat was lovely and toasty! ⚠️😲😁 One of our neighbours had a wood burning stove amd his boat was toasty warm, I guess that would be the way to go long term living, forage for wood etc
Yeah watched and agree with some, some I see as luxury, example is loneliness. Under your circumstance I really understand how you felt but hopefully that’s a one of. Living on a narrowboat is like living in a mansion compared to living in a motorhome. Still loved your vlog, thanks guys.
OMG I would never last with a 30 sec shower. Have gotten spoiled with my natural gas tankless water heater. Only heats as you are using. 10 min shower everyday!🤣🤣🤣 Excellent Vlog! Hope you are all well!💜💜💜
My egocentric mind was unable to process why everyone doesn't want to live on a narrow boat, duh, it's because I have lived alone for 26 years. My perspective didn't include other people in the boat driving each other insane. I get sick of myself, so I'm sure it would be for people that are way past the honeymoon stage of the relationship. When I get there I'm going to make a big hand out of cardboard and have it on a handle so I can put the camera at an angle to try and get the oncoming boat to high five it. Will they or won't they would be fun.
my number 11 would be mechanical. Spend every spare weekend or evening researching or fixing every one of the 1000 things that can go wrong or already have on an older boat!
@Foxes Afloat The opening windows in winter when the heating's on - yes, I've seen that too - my wife does it. In Russia, apartment blocks tend to be centrally heated - one boiler building for at least 2 blocks of flats, and it's turned on in winter and stays on until Spring, so people tend to open their windows to manage the humidity.

My shorts were torn and it was a rude awakening to the perils of narrow boating but it turned out to be one of the best holidays we have ever had.
Hilarious 😂

hey 👋
@@FoxesAfloat 👏😁👏
I can think of one Falling in the water coming home from the Pub.
I always duck when the camera on your boat goes under those bridges. Do you guys have a CO sensor on your boat if so how many and where placed? Thanks!
We do. We have one in the galley/diner and one in the bedroom.
We duck to lol 😆 weird really but I mainly close my eyes as well.

The steel demand in China is the major factor in the price of steel. Has been for the last several years.
👍🏻
The camera work on your Vlogs is exceptional fellas. Can’t wait for the 10 reasons why we should live on a narrow boat. Have a great week and stay safe.
Much appreciated!
Agreed, very nicely done.
Today is my 56th birthday. Thank you for all you do with sharing your narrowboat experiences.
Happy Birthday Dwayne! x
@@FoxesAfloat Thank you very much. I had my birthday cake served on my Royal Doulton with the hand-painted periwinkles. :)
HappY Birthday 🎂🍰🎉🌺✌️
I had to get the dictionary out for “Gormless” I have never heard that expression, but now I have and I can’t wait to use it. Great video, I can’t wait to hear the good reasons.
🤣🤣🤣
Reasons to be cheerful, part three…. Ian Dury and the Blockheads 👍
👍🏻
"She likes it Hardcore. I hope we are talking about music" Lol that cracked me up.
🤣
Same here. Lmao
an old saying I once heard "You don't know a person until you live out of a suitcase with them on a holiday"
Very true!
Hi u2 I hope things are going OK thanks for a great video again take care 😊👍🏻
Thank you! You too!
will take the negatives you have said and turn them into positives when i am a liveaboard..
the song Reasons to be cheerful sung by Ian Dury and the blockheads.
👍🏻
"You Will Lose Money" - A guy I met who lived on a narrowboat once asked me if I knew what BOAT stood for? Bring Out Another Thousand. !!!
Yeah, not quite that extreme 🤣
House prices and rents are mad expensive here in New Zealand. I just bought us a bus that we are converting to a motor home. Your list is great for us too. #TaawakaTravels
Wow! That sounds exciting 👍🏻
We have a bus too in NZ but a lot smaller than a boat. Not yet courageous to live full time but one day. Have fun.
@@FoxesAfloat it is. Nearly got the floor down now seats are out.
Colin: Goes down glug glug glug. Shaun. : like wine. I love this man.
@@tinekejoldersma thanks I think I spell it different every time I comment but thanks for letting me know appreciate it.
🤣
Hi Colin & Shaun, the song reasons to be cheerful, wasn't that Ian Dury and the Blockheads ???, I remember that song lol. Holy cow when you said about a rag on a stick my mind totally went to that episode where Albert Steptoe was in the sink lmao. Thanks you two I really need that, you know how to make a person smile. Thank you for sharing, much love. xx 💖
It was! 👍🏻
"A rag on a stick" was the Roman version of toilet paper. But they left it for the next person to use after!
I keep reading the video title as, "163 Reasons you should NEVER live on a narrowboat."
I could probably think of 163 🤣
Wasn't it Ian Dury and the Blockheads who did Reasons to be Cheerful (part3)
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Ian Drury and the blockheads 😂😂😂😂😂❤️❤️❤️❤️
Two reasons I couldn't live on a narrowboat:
1. No air conditioning.
2. I'm American.
🙄
3 you’re pathetic
4 no sense of adventure
5.. I could go on and on
6 I’m English 😂😂😂
7 no Americans would enjoy narrow boats 😂
8 🛎 end
That was brilliant!
@@derektrotter4287
3. True.
You dont need it in UK
It is no good, nothing would put me off! I am convinced that this is the life for me. Now, all I need is to win the lottery so that I can afford a boat.
Keep your fingers crossed! 🤞
Love the "10 reasons" and just that view of of the cassette emptying makes me appreciate living with central sewer!! Honestly love watching your well done vlogs and more than ever a trip to the UK is in order once things like that are possible again! I'll be the tourist running about England shouting TRAIN !!!
🤣🤣🤣
After watching so many Foxes Afloat vlogs, I've become properly "trained." Whenever I see one now, I intone "Traaaaaaaaaaiiiiiinnnnn!" Can't seem to help it.
👍🏻
Hi Guy's. Thank you for your thoughts on narrowboating. Yes I lost my Dear Dad in lock down I know just how you felt Shaun not been able to visit him .Take care.xx
Sorry to hear that

Good afternoon Colin and Shawn great video you make it so interesting I think it take special people to live on a narrow boat you both make my Friday you both take care and stay safe until next Friday
Well, Colin's definitely 'special' 🤣
The Radio City Brickettet's are seriously "Smokin"!!
🤣🤣🤣
Sometimes i like to think that Shaun is practicing the saying: You can't say that. When Colin is sleeping or is exploring the countryside.
🤣
Great vlog as always. I thought it was just me that read the back of the shampoo bottle. ❤️😃
Haha no, everybody!

This is the most grin inducing, entertaining list of reasons not to go narrow boating ever. Can't wait to hear what the good reasons are.
Haha! Everything can be seen in a positive light 👍🏻💜🤣
@@FoxesAfloat its narrowboat top trumps!
Excellent and realistic review of boating life. Another classic episode with a few double entendre, Grindr, fudge bucket, bathhouse 😂😂. Lovely fun cheers guys
Glad you enjoyed it
Fab vid!! I’m camping in the Yorkshire dales near skipton. Enjoyed spending the day on the Leeds and Liverpool canal
Nice one! Enjoy Skipton!
That was a great vlog, you're amazing guys. It was hard to watch when you were talking about Shaun's dad, the hurt and pain is written over both your faces. I'm so sorry Shaun, I lost my dad 30 years ago and it's still hard. It's heartbreaking, huge hugs to you both. I wish you all the best on your adventures and I look forward to your next vlog. Stay safe! Love ya!
Thank you so much!
What a wonderful life you both have, not only have you found the perfect partner but you share the love of your life on boat and yes let's not forget the wonderful Otis.
CHEERS from Granny Vicki from Logan Utah
Thanks so much. We are really lucky 💜
That was a good video guys 👍🏼 valuable to hear the downside. I have such a ridiculously romantic idea of narrow boating, I’d obviously be the gormless one! … all the best, Huw 😉

...... and get a brown dog!!! Lol. You have a lemon dog and he's beautiful... well worth the cleaning!! love the humor! Love the vlog, wouldn't miss it for the world!x. U guys are tops!.x.
Thanks so much!!
Good afternoon from Tennessee USA. Good information. Glad you shared some of the bad points of narrow boat living. Thanks for sharing your journey with us. You two seem like really super people .
Our pleasure!
Another brilliant well argued and comical episode that was really enjoyable and any the same time truthful about living on a boat! Brilliant both! Ever onwards and keep that humour flowing? Can I say that? 😂😂 Made my Friday evening again, stuck here in landlocked Belarus!
You CAN say that 🤣
Hey boys and Otis
Ian drury is the bloke you were talking about. Sadly no longer with us.
Great content as usual
Can’t wait for the top 10 next week
Have a great weekend
Love Kim x x
Next week's more than makes up for the bad bits 👍🏻
Hehe! Our ears are always burning but mostly when Shaun answers the iron 🤣
@@FoxesAfloat 😂😂 I can imagine this happening. Love you guys 🤍🦊
Do you have to worry about frozen water pipes or the water tank? Great visuals! The camera footage I mean😉😂
Nah, all insulated. The boat sits about 2 feet below the water line. It never freezes that low.
That was great, very informative and the videography was stunning. I love the winter shots. Can’t wait for the reasons why. You two look great! And of course Otis does too. Thanks for another great evening.
❤️🤗❤️🤗❤️🐾
Always a pleasure! x
One of our neighbours had a wood burning stove amd his boat was toasty warm, I guess that would be the way to go long term living, forage for wood etc
🤣😂🤣You two make me smile, every time I watch! You're hilarious! Thank you for brightening up our week!
Our pleasure!
Great work as usual. As an ex submariner I agree with lots of your comments ! Regards AJ
Many thanks, AJ!
Yeah watched and agree with some, some I see as luxury, example is loneliness. Under your circumstance I really understand how you felt but hopefully that’s a one of. Living on a narrowboat is like living in a mansion compared to living in a motorhome. Still loved your vlog, thanks guys.
Thanks, Pauline. x
OMG I would never last with a 30 sec shower. Have gotten spoiled with my natural gas tankless water heater. Only heats as you are using. 10 min shower everyday!🤣🤣🤣
Excellent Vlog! Hope you are all well!💜💜💜
I miss that so much! x
@@FoxesAfloat Hugs for the 3 of you!💜💜💜
My egocentric mind was unable to process why everyone doesn't want to live on a narrow boat, duh, it's because I have lived alone for 26 years.
Haha! Cardboard cutout 🤣
You two are such a trip....in a good way!
Thanks, Michel!
my number 11 would be mechanical. Spend every spare weekend or evening researching or fixing every one of the 1000 things that can go wrong or already have on an older boat!
Where does it say Top Eleven!? 🤣 Anyway, mechanics was covered in Reason 1. Get with the project, Alex 🤣
👍🏻
