My wife and I spent five years living on our narrow boat...they were the best, the most memorable and happiest years of the 68 we’ve been together. Met great people, folk who wanted to help, kids who were excited to step aboard and enjoy a short ride and experienced fabulous countryside. We saw England and Wales from the rarely seen back door.

We took our first narrowboat holiday just before lockdown and the weather was stunning. The first morning after mooring to a tree, I woke up figuring I'd get an early start, went to unmoor and while untying I found myself pushing the boat away with my feet while clinging to the tree. Absolute panic set in as I didn't know how deep the water was, luckily it was only waist high so I clambered back onto the boat, my missus and children had woke after hearing me shouting "Help!!!. . . Help!!!" My shorts were torn and it was a rude awakening to the perils of narrow boating but it turned out to be one of the best holidays we have ever had.

Good afternoon from Tennessee USA. Good information. Glad you shared some of the bad points of narrow boat living. Thanks for sharing your journey with us. You two seem like really super people .
The camera work on your Vlogs is exceptional fellas. Can’t wait for the 10 reasons why we should live on a narrow boat. Have a great week and stay safe.
My dream of living on a narrowboat died a while back. The main reason was, I joined a Facebook group (who shall remain nameless) and, if that's not enough to put you off, what is? Very negative people which, judging by some of the other vlogs out there, backed up my assertions. I now just watch 2-3 vlogs, including this one. I already sort of knew that, despite her nods and semi enthusiasm, that the wife would never do it. So, the Spanish villa is back in vogue (if we're ever allowed to travel again). I've been all around the country with you two and enjoyed every minute. Keep going and good luck.
We ditched all the Facebook groups two years ago. The trolls are definitely the tiniest minority with the biggest mouths. Just shut them off. If nobody hears them they fade away.
Excellent and realistic review of boating life. Another classic episode with a few double entendre, Grindr, fudge bucket, bathhouse 😂😂. Lovely fun cheers guys
Another superb vlog, thought provoking and informative, with some laughs too ;) I think many folks who have holidays on narrowboats think it could be a great way to live, without really appreciating that a week or two in a reasonably controlled environment is very different to 52 weeks solid….. looking forward to seeing the other side next week, hope you’re keeping cool and taking some time out too to look after yourselves.
Another brilliant well argued and comical episode that was really enjoyable and any the same time truthful about living on a boat! Brilliant both! Ever onwards and keep that humour flowing? Can I say that? 😂😂 Made my Friday evening again, stuck here in landlocked Belarus!
Love the "10 reasons" and just that view of of the cassette emptying makes me appreciate living with central sewer!! Honestly love watching your well done vlogs and more than ever a trip to the UK is in order once things like that are possible again! I'll be the tourist running about England shouting TRAIN !!!
After watching so many Foxes Afloat vlogs, I've become properly "trained." Whenever I see one now, I intone "Traaaaaaaaaaiiiiiinnnnn!" Can't seem to help it.
You guys need your own tv show. You are very good at presenting and have great chemistry. Not really been into boating but you make it so interesting. Keep up the good work!
That was great advise! Watching a variety of vlogs recently it seems that so many are choosing a life on a narrowboat/wide beam or a holiday without thinking about the rules that go with it; slowing down when passing moored boats or approaching a corner, courtesy and water saving at locks, mooring at a water point, 4mph guidelines, etc. Stay safe guys. 🙏❤
Hi Colin & Shaun, wonderful smart tips! You guys are looking great! Loved seeing your boat in winter shots and then the fireplace, nice and cozy! Well put together video! Thank you for sharing, take good care of yourselves, stay safe! Please give Otis a big cuddle for me! 💖 Much love Kathy x
Greetings Faffers. I'm Back😊. Not for long though, more hospital coming up🙁. You have kept me going over the last couple of weeks. Colin, we all have our crosses to bear, it just depends how we deal with them. Great vlog as always - you can't say that - Shaun, you have a hard life🤭. Take care and stay safe. Thanks again for your great contribution to the tube. 🙏👍
A mature student I knew at university in the mid 1980s had given up his mortgaged house in favour of buying a narrow boat outright for the three years while he attended college. His plan was to navigate the canals of England during the summer holidays. However, when he set out for the first time, he had only gone half a mile when he found out the boat had been built up and he couldn't get it through the first tunnel. He was trapped on a short stretch of canal in north London!
Even though I now live in Rhodes Greece, I absolutely love watching you guys, I love listening to your banter and appreciate the immense effort you must go to for the historical information ....I also love the fantastic relationship you have with each other....keep up the good work...lots of love from Greece 🇬🇷 xxx
I genuinely think the secret of a successful relationship isn’t actually togetherness; but recognising the value of separate “me” time. Also loved the Dinner Ladies reference 🤣🤣🤣💜
I survived 2 harsh winters aboard a narrow boat that was stuck in a marina actually for sale. Damp and condensation were 2 main downsides, obviously the cold, we went through bottled gas at an alarming rate, very expensive back then, even more I guess now? Was very warm while the gas fire was on but as soon as it was off back to cold very quickly, I guess lack of insulation? I did find a mains point and must say that made a big difference, oh the dry heat I got from that little fan heater was incredible, left it on low at night under our bed, woke up with my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth! But the boat was lovely and toasty! ⚠️😲😁 One of our neighbours had a wood burning stove amd his boat was toasty warm, I guess that would be the way to go long term living, forage for wood etc
First time viewer to your videos and now a subscriber. The thought of living on a houseboat always seems so romantic. People tend to forget the daily mundane chores etc. It is too late for me now to even consider traveling abroad to enjoy a leisurely holiday on a houseboat, but via the 'magic' of the internet it can bring me closer. The drone filming and photography is just fantastic, the beautiful lush green country side, oh so different to living in South Australia. Thanks for sharing.
Spot on with the 10 reasons not to live on a narrowboat but they are, of course, completely outweighed by the reasons to live on a narrowboat which you'll be covering next. But setting aside the theme of the VLOG for a moment, I just wanted to say that the energy, good humour and professionalism that you pour into your VLOGs make them amongst the very best and most entertaining on the whole of You Tube. Thank you.
OMG I would never last with a 30 sec shower. Have gotten spoiled with my natural gas tankless water heater. Only heats as you are using. 10 min shower everyday!🤣🤣🤣 Excellent Vlog! Hope you are all well!💜💜💜
Hi Colin, Shaun and Otis, superb yet again, lovely shots and nice that you tell us all the For’s and Against about boating. Thank you for the entertainment.
I can totally empathise with your aversion to noise, because that's me too. I have to wear ear defenders in my current home, and when I'm out shopping or walking around. I've had it all my life. Noise for me equals pain, it is physically painful for me. I've no ambitions at all to live on a narrow boat, but I will be moving from a city to a bungalow situated on the edge of a field in open countryside in the next three weeks. I've waited all my life for this, while I'm under no illusions that the countryside will be totally quiet, it surely cannot be as loud and jarring as noise from a very large city. Thanks for a great video gentlemen.
Hey boys and Otis Ian drury is the bloke you were talking about. Sadly no longer with us. Great content as usual Can’t wait for the top 10 next week Have a great weekend Love Kim x x
Just found this video by chance - brilliant, insightful and hilariously British. Great job. Couldn’t see much of your beautiful boat - but what was shown is fantastic. Subscribed. 👍
You guys are the best!! BOAT. "bust out another thousand". Seems like all I've done this summer is spend money. Garage out back of house needed new roof, top floor of house is getting new flooring. Camper got refrigerator repaired, now looks like I need new batteries. Always something, boat, house or RV, they all require maintenance. Keep up the good work Colin and Shaun🥰💖
Gentlemen you are a treasure. Thank you for sharing a peek into your lives. I so appreciate your candour and your humor. Sending love and thanks from "across the pond".
That was a good video guys 👍🏼 valuable to hear the downside. I have such a ridiculously romantic idea of narrow boating, I’d obviously be the gormless one! … all the best, Huw 😉
Another great vlog thank you, but I do have to admit at the beginning of the post you went under a really low bridge and I found myself ducking so I would not hit my head LOL see you both next week for 10 reasons why you should.
Really interesting. At my age I would not survive on a narrowboat but it is something I regret not having had a try at when I was young and healthy. Time and work didn't t allow this unfortunately. But I enjoy watching you both and Otis as you share your life with us. Thanks so much. Keep safe and well.
Ian Dury and the Kilburn High Roads. Reason to be cheerful 123. He used to drink in my local and he wasn't stingy when buying a round. We all loved him those of us who live in Kilburn and knew him. I'm looking forward to seeing the next Vlog already. 🧡
@@FoxesAfloat I hope I didn't give the impression that Ian and I were best buds he was a few years older than me and we drank in the same pub on the KHR
Funny you should mention the dramatic rise in the price of boats. My mate has taken up building yachts in his loft….. he says the sails are going through the roof 🥸.
I always duck when the camera on your boat goes under those bridges. Do you guys have a CO sensor on your boat if so how many and where placed? Thanks!
Outstanding Vlog as ever. I have hired boats for a few weeks but on last occasion it rained none stop and any romance of life living on a narrow boat evaporated.
Had a narrowboat holiday way back….two things I didn’t like.- 1. the continuous noise of the engine permanently disrupting the quietness , 2. In March (cold spring) waking up to massive condensation pouring down windows and dampness on bed!
@@FoxesAfloat Hubbie reminds me we had a great deal of rain that holiday and all our damp clothes were hanging overnight inside….that’s what caused all the condensation!!

Exactly, Maudie! 👍🏻
Another brilliant well argued and comical episode that was really enjoyable and any the same time truthful about living on a boat! Brilliant both! Ever onwards and keep that humour flowing? Can I say that? 😂😂 Made my Friday evening again, stuck here in landlocked Belarus!
You CAN say that 🤣
Love the "10 reasons" and just that view of of the cassette emptying makes me appreciate living with central sewer!! Honestly love watching your well done vlogs and more than ever a trip to the UK is in order once things like that are possible again! I'll be the tourist running about England shouting TRAIN !!!
🤣🤣🤣
After watching so many Foxes Afloat vlogs, I've become properly "trained." Whenever I see one now, I intone "Traaaaaaaaaaiiiiiinnnnn!" Can't seem to help it.
You guys need your own tv show. You are very good at presenting and have great chemistry. Not really been into boating but you make it so interesting. Keep up the good work!
Ah, they keep asking but we're not interested in TV 👍🏻
That was great advise! Watching a variety of vlogs recently it seems that so many are choosing a life on a narrowboat/wide beam or a holiday without thinking about the rules that go with it; slowing down when passing moored boats or approaching a corner, courtesy and water saving at locks, mooring at a water point, 4mph guidelines, etc. Stay safe guys. 🙏❤
Thanks, Jill! x
I cant imagine how hard it must have been to have lost a loved one while far away on the boat, but know that he would be proud of what you are doing!
Thanks, Oli 💜
This is the most grin inducing, entertaining list of reasons not to go narrow boating ever. Can't wait to hear what the good reasons are.
Haha! Everything can be seen in a positive light 👍🏻💜🤣
@@FoxesAfloat its narrowboat top trumps!
🤣😂🤣You two make me smile, every time I watch! You're hilarious! Thank you for brightening up our week!
Our pleasure!
Aww, thanks again Kathy! I've missed the snow this week 🥵
Aww, thanks, Chris. All the best with the treatment x
Hilarious! 🤣 (Not for him, obviously) 😬
reasons to be cheerful was by Ian Dury and the blockheads
👍🏻
Just dont hit em with your rhythm stick
^^ What Bob said :)
Only just found your account and so glad I did.
Sooo funny, you're a lovely couple 🥰
Can't wait to binge watch your adventures! 😘♥️
Welcome to the madness 🤣❤️
You two truly make my Fridays. No matter how bad I am doing, your videos change my day for the better. Thanks again.
Wow, thank you!
Thanks so much, Dawn!
I genuinely think the secret of a successful relationship isn’t actually togetherness; but recognising the value of separate “me” time. Also loved the Dinner Ladies reference 🤣🤣🤣💜
👍🏻
Our darling Shawn is not gormlas he's gorgeous lol and so are you Collin xx, loved the video, can't wait for next week. Love to the 3 of you xx
😊 thank you
I survived 2 harsh winters aboard a narrow boat that was stuck in a marina actually for sale.
One of our neighbours had a wood burning stove amd his boat was toasty warm, I guess that would be the way to go long term living, forage for wood etc
Our pleasure, Deb.
Thank you.
Aww, cheers, Alan! x
I am and old 80 plus shut in and you pride me with so much joy and laughter thanks
Glad to hear it ❤️❤️❤️
OMG I would never last with a 30 sec shower. Have gotten spoiled with my natural gas tankless water heater. Only heats as you are using. 10 min shower everyday!🤣🤣🤣
Excellent Vlog! Hope you are all well!💜💜💜
I miss that so much! x
@@FoxesAfloat Hugs for the 3 of you!💜💜💜
I've been thinking of moving onto one for a while. I'm glad you put this on
👍🏻
Hi Colin, Shaun and Otis, superb yet again, lovely shots and nice that you tell us all the For’s and Against about boating. Thank you for the entertainment.
Our pleasure!
Always a pleasure, John 💜
Hey boys and Otis
Ian drury is the bloke you were talking about. Sadly no longer with us.
Great content as usual
Can’t wait for the top 10 next week
Have a great weekend
Love Kim x x
Next week's more than makes up for the bad bits 👍🏻
Just found this video by chance - brilliant, insightful and hilariously British. Great job. Couldn’t see much of your beautiful boat - but what was shown is fantastic. Subscribed. 👍
Wow, thank you! Lots of videos of inside in our playlists 👍🏻
Hi u2 I hope things are going OK thanks for a great video again take care 😊👍🏻
Thank you! You too!
We agree!
Gentlemen you are a treasure. Thank you for sharing a peek into your lives. I so appreciate your candour and your humor. Sending love and thanks from "across the pond".
Thanks, Christine! x
That was a good video guys 👍🏼 valuable to hear the downside. I have such a ridiculously romantic idea of narrow boating, I’d obviously be the gormless one! … all the best, Huw 😉
Our pleasure!
Great vlog as always. I thought it was just me that read the back of the shampoo bottle. ❤️😃
Haha no, everybody!
Another great vlog thank you, but I do have to admit at the beginning of the post you went under a really low bridge and I found myself ducking so I would not hit my head LOL see you both next week for 10 reasons why you should.
Hehe! Just wait for next week. It actually does 🤣
Really interesting. At my age I would not survive on a narrowboat but it is something I regret not having had a try at when I was young and healthy. Time and work didn't t allow this unfortunately. But I enjoy watching you both and Otis as you share your life with us. Thanks so much. Keep safe and well.
Thanks James !
Ian Dury and the Kilburn High Roads. Reason to be cheerful 123. He used to drink in my local and he wasn't stingy when buying a round. We all loved him those of us who live in Kilburn and knew him.
I'm looking forward to seeing the next Vlog already. 🧡
Interesting!
👏
LOL!
"Dogs don't care how mucky and wet and muddy they get" - There is nothing more affectionate than a wet dog!
Haha! The screams
They don't care how mucky you get either. Or if whatever you smell like is 1000% stronger than ours.
Let's face it, most wet things can stink 🤣
@@musicalmarion I could take that into an innopreopriate direction way to easily.
That gives us some weird insight into your private life
I always duck when the camera on your boat goes under those bridges. Do you guys have a CO sensor on your boat if so how many and where placed? Thanks!
We do. We have one in the galley/diner and one in the bedroom.
We duck to lol 😆 weird really but I mainly close my eyes as well.
Love your dynamic and how you are together. Very funny and entertaining but real at the same time. Brilliant as always.
Thanks so much!
Outstanding Vlog as ever. I have hired boats for a few weeks but on last occasion it rained none stop and any romance of life living on a narrow boat evaporated.
Oh dear!
Had a narrowboat holiday way back….two things I didn’t like.- 1. the continuous noise of the engine permanently disrupting the quietness , 2. In March (cold spring) waking up to massive condensation pouring down windows and dampness on bed!
I agree with you about the engine noise. It's something I'll never get used to. Condensation is easy to control with good heating and ventilation 👍🏻
@@FoxesAfloat Hubbie reminds me we had a great deal of rain that holiday and all our damp clothes were hanging overnight inside….that’s what caused all the condensation!!
Shawn: "You can't say that!" Makes me smile every time.
🙂
Oh my word, just love your magnificent banter all the way through this awesomeness video,I think that the both of you are so utterly brilliant,
Your definitely the ultimate cruising couple on the whole canal system,I totally enjoyed your marvellously put together truly brilliant list of

Thanks, Tony. Really glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
When you asked me if I read on the loo… I answered “yes” out loud 😂😂.. and I realised that I listen to you two as though we’re all having a Friday night together ! What with that, and calling out Ttttrrrraaaiiinnn. !! Great rapport as ever, thanks guys! I love the word Gormless! 😂😂

Brilliant video lads, very informative and direct. I'm considering selling my house and buying a WB boat to live on. It's great to hear about the realities and practicalities of boat life. I'm doing plenty of research to gen up, not rushing into it. I will work my way through the rest of your videos. Keep up the great work!
Fab vid!! I’m camping in the Yorkshire dales near skipton. Enjoyed spending the day on the Leeds and Liverpool canal
Nice one! Enjoy Skipton!

House prices and rents are mad expensive here in New Zealand. I just bought us a bus that we are converting to a motor home. Your list is great for us too. #TaawakaTravels
Wow! That sounds exciting 👍🏻
We have a bus too in NZ but a lot smaller than a boat. Not yet courageous to live full time but one day. Have fun.
@@FoxesAfloat it is. Nearly got the floor down now seats are out.
Random question: What is the average depth of the canals you travel in and have you ever been stuck because one was to shallow? Thanks
Usually between 3 and 5 feet. Yes, we've grounded on low levels a couple of times.
@@FoxesAfloat With water that shallow in places, I'd be so afraid of what kind of things are at the bottom like trash, broken glass and the like. It would make me so fearful of Otis getting hurt or one of you two falling in and getting banged up or cut. I had no idea it could be that shallow.
Superb as always!
Thank you! x
The quality of your reports/content and filming just goes from strength to strength.
Thanks so much, Sharon x
Really funny vlog this week but great info too. Just 6 of the reasons were enough to put me off !!. Happy cruising guys and looking forward to seeing your next video. Have a great weekend.
Cheers Mark 👍🏻
Is it just me or is Shaun getting more relaxed in front of the camera? I remember back in the day when he wouldn't say boo to a goose lol
He says a lot worse to the goose now! 🤣
@@FoxesAfloat :-)
@@FoxesAfloat Most people say more (worse) to the goose
Shaun is too busy gasping and telling Colin, "You can't SAY THAT!"
if i had any money i would pay to see Sean do a whole video without Colin saying a word
if thats even possible, Keep up the good work cant wait for 10 reasons you should live on a narrowboat.
Did anyone else Duck for the camera at the first bridge? 😂
Awesome stuff Gents 👍🏻✅😃
🤣🤣🤣 a few people have said that xx
Sounds a lot like living in an RV. Until my husband's health issues made us move back into a house it was a great life, but it's not for everyone.
