  • Shaun shows you how to make a curry on the cut as we take a narrowboat journey through Wolverhampton on our adventure across Britain by Narrowboat.
We start our canal journey on the southern end of the Shropshire Union Canal, taking a starboard turn onto the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal for a short distance, before taking a port turn on to the Birmingham Canal Navigations Main Line and tackling to 21 Wolverhampton locks.
After a night in Wolverhampton, we head towards Tipton and moor at the Black Country Museum, close to the Dudley Tunnel where the canal scenes from Peaky Blinders are filmed.

Hi guys, I just want to thank you for all your effort and all your work getting such great and high quality videos out to us. I've been watching these videos for a short time now, and I do mean short, in the last weeks I've devoured all the videos I can find from a lot of UA-camrs, you guys and David from Cruising the Cut are the ones I seem to watch most. I absolutely loved your series when you were building your boat. I am a truck driver in America, long haul, long distance, I have been doing this for 31 years now, the wife works for the Post Office for almost as long, we are not particularly impulsive people, we are both bikers (Harley Davidson type) and we have enjoyed the community that comes with that for a long time. I promise, I'm going somewhere here. When I watched David's video of the Crick show, wait, I'm getting ahead of myself here, let me back up a little. When I started watching the canal videos, I was entranced, I was absolutely gob smacked (is that one word or two?) I was in love and even though it was love at first sight, love it was, I started researching hire boats and where to get my hands on a narrow boat at the soonest opportunity, then I got really hooked. I started watching everything I could find, I was happy to see another American (Michael from Minimal List) and I realized, I can do this, we can do this, and that was it, I was all in. We started researching narrow boats and reading and watching all we could, we loved Bickerstaff boats almost from the start, before we ever saw your videos of your build, that may be what brought us to you in the beginning. We have decided to start doing our vacations there on the canals, and when we retire, we are selling everything, houses, motorcycles and the lot and getting our own narrow boat, I plan to live out my days on the canals, in canal time, at canal speed. Collin and I have a lot in common, I may be slightly more able to handle strangers, but that's about it (and I use comedy like a shield there), the rest I recognize all the same things I deal with, thanks for being so open about it. I hope to be able to meet some of the folks we feel we have gotten to know through the videos. Thank you Shawn and Collin, and David, Jo, Michael, Jasmine and everyone for sharing your lives with us, allowing us to share in your adventures and your days, for sharing your knowledge and letting us learn from your mistakes and experiences. This has been long and I know a bit rambling, so I will just say once more, and always, thank you.

      Hey! 👋
Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a personal message. There's definitely a growing community of us boaters taking to UA-cam, so you'll always have something to watch. You'll know most of the system before you finally get aboard 😂
I hope you enjoy your time on the canal when you do it. Those first times are a bit awesome. It takes a bit of adjustment but you'll know after your first couple of holidays whether it's something you could do full-time.
It would be a great idea to tie in one of your vacations with the Crick Boat Show which takes place every May. It's the biggest boat show in the country for narrowboats and is the best place to spend a weekend talking to all the builders and looking around all the boats.
      Sending love! 💜

Hi guys, just wanted to say thank you for your amazing vlog. My best friend recommended I watch as I have found out, at 49, that I have ADHD and I am struggling and they thought Colin's honesty and forthrightness about his ASD might help and it really has, in so many ways. I'm now doing my ADHD thing and hopping at random through all the episodes and just enjoying them so much. If things gets hard and I need a distraction which is fun but not difficult, informative but not too much for my brain weasels, this is where I come. Colin, you are amazing, Shaun, so are you as I know mental health stuff can be hard to see a loved one go through. Anyway, I love narrowboats and I love history and the way you present it all is just so much fun too. Oh and Shaun, I never cook, but so far you have inspired me to cook, twice! Thanks guys, you help so much and I wish you and Otis all the very best in your new and exciting boat venture! Jenny xxx

@@FoxesAfloat expensive though from what I've seen them sold for.
in the army most QMs used to keep ww2 era hay boxes which were metal boxes packed with hay as the insulation, they cooked the stew in 10 gallon cans and locket them into the hay boxes for the afternoon to continue cooking or keep warm. later replaced by modern 'norwegians' but they were never quite as good.

Hey guys you really excelling yourselves with this one! Underwater camera, cooking, ( took me back 70 years when we didn’t have ‘thermal’ cookers but used a hay box!). Next time Sean, CAKE ! 😆And thanks so much for all your research Colin, you really bring the canals alive, no wonder the folks in foreign parts find it all so interesting. You make it fascinating 👍😄. Must admit we had some bother up Wolverhampton way, pounds emptied, stuff thrown from bridges and a lot of rubbish in canal. Good to see it’s much improved for you. Happy travels. Joan

    Q. The water in the Birmingham Canal appears clearer and blueish/green...different to the usual colours of canals...why?
Another excellent vlog fellas...thermal cookers are popular here in Australia...an excellent energy saving way to cook and you’ve added a new dimension to your vlogs...🤗perhaps Sean would consider some more “Cooking on the Cut” recipes for the future😉

      Hi James!
I'm really not sure about the colour. Someone said it was due to a spill of cooking colouring, others that it's to do with the industry. I'm not sure, but it's a lot cleaner than most people think.

@Dreamweaver 787 having lived on the side of the canal in central Birmingham I am aware that there are canal boats traveling around cleaning every day. I had a wonderful duplex apartment and the ground floor was on the cow path so working from home gave me insight to much traffic. Including the steam driven boat from the Black Country museum. Happy days but having retired to the Dorset Coast in a very small and remote cottage I am in a good place.

Curry looked delicious. ❤️ Not the most scenic stretch of canal you’ve kindly shown us, but your great eye for videography certainly enhances it. He wasn't shy at all. Given the area and well past experiences in my own life. There are people out there who just scan the area waiting for targets to Moore up and leave. I'll bet he was up to no good. Perhaps even seeing if the boat coming through would be a good target or no. Either way, he was up to no good and Im glad you never stayed in that area.

Ooh, Sean's curry made me feel hungry! And as to the canals, the West Midlands has an amazing network. Did some of it with our kids many many years ago, including the Netherton Tunnel and a visit to the Black Country Museum. There was no access to the Dudley Tunnel, even in a trip boat, at that time. So it's really good to see some of the network again.

Hi lads. I did the Birmingham canal network several times many years ago with my family. On one visit we explored many of the backwaters which we found fascinating. How its changed now. So much cleaner and many of the factories gone. I remember we saw a smelter pouring molten metal at night. Alas no more. Another first class vlog. Don't forget to mention that Birmingham has more canals than Venice.

WOW Guys, what an awesome post! That's the most we've seen and heard from Shaun since you all started posting over a year ago. Great job Shaun, it's obvious you're very comfortable in the kitchen. Colin, it's a joy to see you light up sharing an interesting historic fact or story with us about where you are or have been each week. Friday is my favorite day, your videos arrive about lunch time here in FL. (think about joining the rest of your countrymen down here in Sarasota, FL when you guys are ready to retire and get off the boat.)
On one of those cold, wet, ugly English evenings, when you're surfing Netflix or UA-cam for content, watch Cowspiracy and Game Changers on Netflix and Pure Plant Nation on UA-cam. There'll be a short quiz following next weeks posting. Cheers Scott

Not trying to compete with Shaun's cooking but I make a family curry (for 4 adults) almost "religiously" every Thursday evening & have done for many years (the reason why I'll save up until we meet up in person hopefully one day !). I tend to use a jar of sauce rather than the paste that Shaun used & leave out the chopped tomatoes, but have often made them from scratch (as we have a cupboard full of spices).
I even made one when we were on a camping holiday in France last summer, although had some difficulty with all the ingredients (as the French don't really do curries !)
