Mine works fine. You left out two important items on the installation: 1. You must charge the battery before installing and 2. There is a firmware update that needs to be installed. Plus, you need to install the ring app first. Also, if the WiFi connection isn’t strong enough you may need the ring WiFi extender to make everything work better. I’m happy with mine. You know you can buy it and try it out. Then if you are not satisfied return it through Amazon.
All your points I have done..battery fully charged, updates installed and WiFi strong as per the apps test.. I’m a reviewer btw if you don’t noticed it yet...I review stuff..so I’m glad you are happy with yours...
So, the reviewer doesn’t like to be reviewed? Anyway, that’s not the point. It appears most viewers decided to not purchase after seeing your review which matters not to me. I thought a good review comment would present a different point of view. And yeah, I know you are a “reviewer”.
Well that’s good that yours are working as intended. But your comment stating that the battery needs to be fully charged, app needs to be updatedetc etc...just kinda irks me..because I have been reviewing for a while now and that is a given...
LifeHackster: no offense intended. I liked your video but most “reviewers” don’t get so defensive when someone offers a differing viewpoint or constructive criticism. I only knew those things because I read the supplied instructions and watched the Ring installation videos. But that doesn’t make me smarter than anyone else. My point is that it’s good to get other thoughts and suggestions from the audience. Most of the time, my comments get a thumbs up and a thank you. Certainly, I didn’t mean to irk you. Keep up the good work.
I’m glad you call out ring for needing to improve quality. I’ve been struggling with ring taking action to fix things with my alarm and spotlight cam wired
They do need to bump up the quality of their cameras instead of using the same technology they used 3 years ago..a lot of companies have way better video quality.
Wanted this for my elderly mom at her suggestion. Thanks for your detailed review. Hoping upgrades and improvements to this product will make it worth the investment in the near future. Thanks again!
While its not perfect, its a great first concept product. i have installed it for a family member and thought it was great for a condo where their a lot of rules regarding outdoor cameras.
Thanks for the great settings overview. Camera quality has been improved, I just got mine April 2020 and the background is less blown out in bright light.
Thanks for the detailed review. I’m considering one of these for my townhouse. I get several Amazon packages per week and I like to keep an eye on things.
Very cool. Now if only ring gave us an option to have something like a Bay station, where we can use USB hard drives or simcards to keep our own recordings without the cloud. It should also allow for Ethernet and wifi. That way we can eliminate rings excuses for connection issues.
Great review! I am glad you have showed the run down on installation and use for everyone! I agree on the needed camera improvements........and hoping for a new Ring Doorbell Pro very soon!
Great video... I kinda wanted to add this to my existing spotlight cams... Looks like I'm better off just using my existing spotlight wired... Lack of motion zones is a no go for me... I also wish they offered a pro version that was bigger, held 2 or 3 batteries with a rear tft screen that came on automatically. The screen would make it awesome. I'd love just walking up to the door and instantly see who's there...
Yea buddy thought the same...just a small screen on the inside...about 10x15cm would be enough...then you dont need the peep hole anymore..it makes it...kinda old i think...but great doorbell for real...does its job
The problem I had with their spotlight was the dropped connection in spite of having the Ring extender, which did nothing to fix the problem. Ended up returning both. After trying the Arlo Pro 2, the Blink X2, in addition to the Ring Spotlight, as previously mentioned, I finally settled for the Nest Hello with the Koroao Wall Plate (which has a 35 degree angle and perfectly covers the hole in the wall through which I had to put the transformer). This is the same setup that Lifehackster has at his home (or had at the time he released the video where he shows the system he has). As this video makes clear, this Door View Cam is for those that have no other choice. Better to have something than nothing at all, particularly for those that may not be able to use a peephole, due to limited vision, of who is outside the door. Clearly, it can't compare with the Nest. Also, $5 /month subscription (Nest) is quite reasonable. Yet another excellent, comprehensive, unbiased video to an already ample collection. Thanks again Lifehackster!
A very good summary and quite helpful enough I m not going to waste time installing i was thinking of the effect my glass outer door would have on the motion sensor that was answered won't work and if the glass door lock.Enough said two weeks return policy it going back hey my man you did great and of course thank you.
Yet another great review. :) Having seen some of the comments to date I think that many commentors make valid points, but fail to realise that the product is targetted at a very specific market and physical configuration. It is a fairly new product and given Ring's past performance i would expect as the product matures the issues that have been raised will be addressed. I was interested in the product as, although I do have a door bell push at the side of my front door, the majority of callers still resort to knocking on the door :( The door has glass panels and unfortunately no peephole, so when I saw the title of your video I wondered if it was a product that I could use, as a bell push in the centre of the door might encourage callers to use it. Thanks to your video I realise I will have to keep on searching :(, but at least there is some hope as there does seem to be developments in that area . Keep up the good work .
@@LifeHackster Well Ring did manage to release the upgrade you had mentioned (hoped for) regarding the night colour footage, it just takes some time after they have become aware of the issue to implement a solution, and even longer for non US customers to get it :). I an not in the US by the way.
@@LifeHackster - I would love to see this tested on an actual apartment door which I believe is a better use case for this form. It is not in the interest of the camera's target class to see far out into the street (so whitewash is irrelevant), and, no doubt it was engineered with that limitation in mind. This review is good as all of yours are but the decision to test on a house door versus a real apartment skews the conclusion a little IMHO.
Great review. Is it possible to turn off the chime outside the door, and only have it ring on the inside, using an Echo Dot or Echo Pop? That outside the door chime sounds really loud and would bother my apartment neighbours, one who is almost right across the hall. Thanks!
Hi lifehackster, love your video reviews. Just wondering what would be your best buy camera system. Your reviews are detailed and honest, just wondering what you would go for personally. Cheers
What a great "REAL LIFE" review, I saw this on the "geekanoids" channel and thought that looks like a good product, so I looked for a review (I ALWAYS review products before purchase) and I saw your REAL review, boy what a let down ! POOR picture quality, TERRIBLE sound ! YOU saved me wasting £170 , thanks very much, GREAT review, really disappointed that a large manafacturer like ring would RELEASE a poor quality product onto the market just to make a quick buck, I certainly won't be RINGing the tills of ring company profits !
Excellent review LifeHacker,. Question: Are there any other video door bells utilising the peep hole installation, that I should consider before purchasing? Thank you.
Great video. I wonder how it works in an indoor hallway. I think it was designed to work in apartments and condos, most of which would have interior corridors. The video and audio quality appear to be very disappointing.
I really enjoyed your product review on the Ring Security System and so much so that I bought their 5 piece alarm package and also 3 indoor cams and 1 stick up cam (all cams are the wired version). I have a question regarding the Peephole Cam Battery..... Its currently around 70% state of charge, but I wonder when its time to recharge it, will removing it from the cam disrupt the system? I also bought a spare battery and when the one installed gets low, I will then charge my spare in prep for swapping it out. Even still..... the actual swap will require me to remove it and I hope that wont disrupt the Cam system,. Do you know ??? I looked online at the Ring website and looked all through the community Q&A but cant find the answer. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.
Great video! I just bought it 5 minutes ago..but here is a question...i do have ring alert...and its all connected via ring app together...so when my ring alert is ACTIVATED/AWAY , abd somebody comes along my door...does it activate the ring alarm sound inside of my house? Or is it not included into the ring alarm system settings? I dont want an alarm everytime when sb walks past my doorbell haha
You may or may not know, but all of your points were brought up by numerous people testing the camera before release. Some have gotten better with updated firmware..some still need a little work.
I am also learning and I really didn’t test this but the FOV of the camera is too high that people will not be able to monitor packages left at the front door.
I have a front door with the existing door bell on the side adjacent wall. Would you recommend 1) the Ring Peephole camera , or 2) the Ring Pro 2 with a wedge? Your review of the Peephole camera seemed to be 'just ok' in all aspects of video & audio quality, as well as functionality. The video output seemed to be more 360p than 1080p.

With a glass door, the motion detection will not work due to the camera using a PIR sensor and you have to turn off Infrared so that at night, there will be no glare.
Quick question. What would you consider to be the best wireless cameras? Or your top 3? I’m renting a house and would like to install some wireless cameras outside. Thanks in advance🙏🏽
Nice review. I’m curerntly deciding between the ring doorview(peeephole) camera and the nee ring wired video doorbell. Are they similar in terms of audio quality, etc?
Re: Doorbell blue light activation Does it only glow when pressed or door knocked? Can i view live video without it notifying person hanging around my door?
Wait so if you have a door right across from you and you add a privacy blackout zone, wouldn't that mean if someone takes something from your door like a package you wouldn't see it. Also if someone rings your door would the privacy screen go away because it doesn't seem like there's any depth perception to hide a door that's 4' away, only hides whatever is on the screen.
So what video doorbell would you recommend if ring seems to have bad Quality cameras. Maybe your top 2 favorite Choices.... By the way I Love the channel
I have attached ring in place of doorbell that was working now we don’t have a doorbell and the ring does not work. Will this change when we add it to the app.
I just ordered one but I have a glass door in front of my door. You said the motion detective will not work for that...so now I started not to like it as much then.
Hey 👋🏽 I was wondering if you will be doing a review on the New Ring indoor cameras?!? My husband and I were thinking maybe this would be a better option for baby monitor. And entry and garage door entry once inside the house.
They can’t do that, if you’re not damaging anything you have every right to have surveillance at your door, even as a renter. I am speaking as a Texas resident who just won a battle with my landlord over this, they tried saying I’m violating my neighbors’ privacy... but the law is clear that you’re not entitled to privacy outside your dwelling so I’m allowed to keep my video doorbell
The problem with the ring doorbell is the video quality. We have a long hallway Entry to the door and it’s kind of dark. Even At day time. I hope they can add a clarity adjustment to make video quality better.
I purchased ring peephole a month ago, what a nightmare!! Installed it, black and white picture only. After doing tricks with the ring specialist she decided it was defective. The second one arrived, this one the sound was garbled and only black and white picture. Once again after doing what the rep wanted me to do it was decided it was defective. Third ring arrived, I paid a serviceman $75 to install this one, on the chance I didn't know what I was doing, sound was great, picture black and white. I decided the ring peephole product may need rethinking at the factory returned it to Amazon. Really enjoying experience.
@lifehacker I have a question. My doorbell doesn’t sound good when I answer it. It kind of sounds muffled is there something I can do to get better audio on both my phone and at the doorbell??
I don't get why I can't get my sound to work on my peephole cam, I can't hear the ding tune from the cam and people can't hear me when I talk into the 2-way mode from the app
Thanks for another outstanding video. They have a lot bugs to fix with this product and some of their other products. I appreciate it, but I won’t purchase it right now.
Hello, I live on a townhome on a very busy street. Can I turn off motion detection and just get an alert when bell is pushed and when I want to Liveview?
I started looking at Ring for apartments after I found some shipped boxes on my front door both cut open to apparently examine the contents of the boxes. This is a very good and fair review looking at the pros and cons. Version one of any product always has bugs for sure. Right now this is the only product like this for renters though. It's kind of on the expensive side at two-hundred bucks. But Amazon offers a payment plan on it which makes it more affordable to me. BTW, this review made me click on the subscribe button for LifeHackster :-)
Ring should hire you. Not only to do how videos but R&D. You have sold me more products and have told me more stuff than their website has.
The Ring peephole camera is back on the market. I came here setup instructions. This site has the best informative reviews!!!
Any chance to have a follow-up review of this doorbell with new firmware to see if the quality has improved?
Mine works fine. You left out two important items on the installation: 1. You must charge the battery before installing and 2. There is a firmware update that needs to be installed. Plus, you need to install the ring app first. Also, if the WiFi connection isn’t strong enough you may need the ring WiFi extender to make everything work better. I’m happy with mine. Well that’s good that yours are working as intended. But your comment stating that the battery needs to be fully charged, app needs to be updatedetc etc...just kinda irks me..because I have been reviewing for a while now and that is a given...

How else will they make money from charging you to store and download your videos...
I like Ring but hate having to need a subscription
I know..but the cloud recording is a money maker for them...
+1. And not risking Ring provides access to your videos to other people without your acceptance....
But the cloud storage also means that you video is there even if a bad actor steals or destroys the device

Yes, that’s true.

Can I change the privacy zones after setting it up?

I wish they would just make a plain peephole viewer, some apartments won't allow you to add the door bell peephole

Hi did you try the WiFi extender. ? It solved all my problems with the first gen door bell.
My friend which where I installed this doorbell doesn’t have an extender and the signal(rssi) is pretty decent anyways.
Why on the box they make it seem like it’s only suitable for doors with existing peephole? What about doors with no hole? We can still drill right?
Does it work without a paid subscription plan?
Love that they added HDR to the video settings. Too bad they didn't actually add it to the hardware.. :-S
There is really no difference having the HDR.
The problem with the ring doorbell is the video quality. We have a long hallway Entry to the door and it’s kind of dark. Even At day time. I hope they can add a clarity adjustment to make video quality better.
They always have mediocre video quality..but there are now better quality cameras out there and Ring hasn’t improved theirs...
Is there a doorbell camera that has a really good camera? What brand Sir?
Will this work ok if you have a clear glass storm door in front of the regular door?
You will not be able to use the motion detection feature. Also, you have to turn off IR in the app... so that there will be no glare at night.

@lifehacker I have a question. My doorbell doesn’t sound good when I answer it. It kind of sounds muffled is there something I can do to get better audio on both my phone and at the doorbell??
That is how usually the ring doorbells perform.. check your WiFi signal and see if it is solid where your doorbell is installed.
I've been looking for something like this since my door bell is on the other wall
Does the peephole came itself rings? Do we need a chime?
No. You will need a chime if you want it to chime inside..
I hope that they improve the video quality..and work on the impact sensors bugs..
Hello, I live on a townhome on a very busy street. Can I turn off motion detection and just get an alert when bell is pushed and when I want to Liveview?
Yes you can, it's very easy to do in the Ring app.
So how often do you have to charge the battery?
If the knocking Isent getting detected set the sensitivity to higher
Does the ring doorbell 2 have a siren mode?
No it doesn’t.
my door dont have the eye hole ...... and is a rental house so i dont want to make a hole what should i do or what can i do.?
Battery video doorbell. You can use a double sided mounting tape to install it.
I order the ring door bell the 3 one ....
Thank you. I appreciate it.
whats the diameter of the hole for the peephole?
