  • Just a quickie vid, thought I'd bring the camera along while I put my extra set of log dogs on the 261. Two reasons for them: assurance of straighter felling cuts/cutting overall, and pure aesthetic. It sure looks mean with two sets on it!
    Stihl Part Number for the "Felling Spikes" kit (both dogs and installation hardware): 0000 660 0800

    I have added the Stihl Part Number for the dog set to the video description in case anyone is needing it! I also will have the PN for the "cover plate" for cutting in heavy snow (goes under recoil starter cover to prevent drawing excess snow/moisture that can ice the carb in winter mode) sometime next week if anyone needs/wants that as well. Took the dealer and I a bit to find that more obscure part, but it's on it's way.

      It may be a slightly older iteration without the new "m-tronic" electronic carburetor. Then again it may just not list the M and still be the M lol. It is a heck of a saw, and I really like the way it handles and looks with the double dog setup!

    HH..that drag you feel loosening nuts is almost always the Loctite Stihl Virginia Beach uses on almost all of their bolts whether into the magnesium casing or nuts. Use the Blue so that you can take it apart later if necessary. Red can be a PITA.
    When filing your .325 chain use the 3/16" file to start. when you get to where 1/2 the top plate is gone, drop down to 11/64". The better Stihl dealers carry them. And get a Husky flat plate depth gauge; not the one on their roller guide. The Stih, Husky roller, and Oregon are soft metal and cannot be used for more than a couple filings.
    Good video...never knew Stihl had dogs for their smaller saws.

    • @HoosierHomesteaders
      @HoosierHomesteaders  5 років тому

      That could very well be, didn't notice any on them upon removal but the one in the blind hole definitely had something on it by feel. I have some loctite 243 I put on them to keep em from vibrating loose.
      The 11/64" file is good advice. I have 4 or 5 dealers around me, and my favorite one is willing to order in anything I want for me so no problem there.
      As far as the depth gauge, I've mostly taken to not filing directly on it just so they last longer. I check them, pull it away and give it a stroke or two, then check it again till it doesn't catch. Probably not ideal but it works lol.

    • @HoosierHomesteaders
      @HoosierHomesteaders  3 роки тому

      It is yet to be seen whether the electronic carb will give me issues or not, but as of yet I am really enjoying it. Unlike my other saws, this one is immediately ready to go upon startup, no warmup required. My others of course have to sit and idle for a few minutes to be ready, but the electronic adjustment on this has it ready as soon as it fires and in any temperature conditions without adjustment! Yes, it will likely fail at some point in the future, as it's just another moving part to wear out, but I like it so far!

      It will actually give a better bite so you don't slip while you're leveraging the bar in, as well as help to maintain a straighter cut. I find that with them on I always have nice perpendicular cuts rather than angled off one way or another. Aside from that, it just looks really cool lol. It does give another option for laying your saw on its side kinda hanging on a log too. Hope that helps a little?

    Check out the set that goes on the MS361 - part #1135 650 7750. You just have to remove a small amount of material from each side of the roller chain catch as it's a bit wide for the 261. • @HoosierHomesteaders
      @HoosierHomesteaders  4 роки тому +1

      There is still more plastic on them than they used to have for sure, I have a 30+ year old 031 that is almost entirely steel. Any of the “pro” grade saws (so any model that ends in 61 or 62) is going to have more metal than plastic, with the higher prices bigger ones being even more robust, but they will all have plastic tanks these days. You’re probably in the right place, you’re just going to have to trust that the pro saws have metal where they need it for longevity lol.
