I had a G-Wiz 14 years ago, the only electric car available between 2001 & 2009. I loved driving it in and around London from my home in Croydon. Used daily, running between the traffic lights with the motorbikes as the initial pulling torque was good even if the top speed wasn't. Never ran out of juice. I sold it to a neighbour who used it for several more years to commute between Croydon and Reigate. This car was a real star. I've driven a Tesla but for the money the G-Wiz was a lot more fun.
What range did a G-Wiz have 20 years ago? 40 miles What range did a Tesla have 20 years ago? 0 miles What range did a Nissan Leaf have 20 years ago? 0 miles Just for comparison, a 1909 Baker Electric owned by Jay Leno has a range of 120 miles
I got range anxiety just watching them. I really didn't think they would make it back. Great visualization of how far electric cars have come in a very short time span.
@@toyotaprius79 every lithium converted gwiz had the same range of a smart eq, much more compact... much more parking....at a 3rd of the price (sometimes even more)
The Gwiz is EU classified as a Quadracycle (7Le) not a motor car .so like a twizzy . You should check out Richard Mawby ( UA-cam ) he converts old gWiz with lithium Ion ebike batteries and has one that's got 120+ mile range ...
Innovators and visionaries are often laughed at, dismissed and or discredited, watching this video highlights to me this EV was designed, produced, and sold at a time no one was thinking EV's... both creator and early the adopter deserve to be recognised and not laughed at. Everything is simple when you know how, but it is an entirely different matter when you have a vision and venture into unchartered waters.
It's funny. Your attitude to the GWiz is like people my age's attitude towards the unreliable petrol cars from yesteryear. For decades now we've had electronic ignition controlled cars that are extremely reliable and hardly rust. You guys missed the point where you could buy a rusty Austin 1100 or Triumph Herald for £50 quid and use it as a daily, never knowing if it'll make it to your destination. Especially if it started raining!!... "range anxiety" wasn't a thing, as breaking down if you owned a shit box was given!! :)
About Safety..... Just a thought here but how many people do you think have died whilst driving the GWizz? Well I'm aware of 1 in 2010 and another in 2011. So now the question has to be how many have died whilst using an Electic Scooter?
We're not talking about air pollution, or don't you know that Electric scooters and cars don't cause any pollution? Perhaps a day in school might be appropriate.
@ 00:44 People laugh too easily sometimes!. So unlike your friend, it is good that you (main narrator) actually presented a good overview of why this car, the G-Wiz, for all it's "laughable" apparent shortcomings WAS a credible EV solution , above all else serving the real needs of a far greater reach and demographic globally. Narrow views like the derisive view about the G-Whizz deeming it rubbish without real objective analysis is usually the cause why we actually end up with the real "rubbish" as surrounds most EV's of today. Cue totally over-priced, money pits (horrendous depreciation) and only working because of subsidies on tax etc from authorities. This car/EV format it represents (*) had it been allowed to evolve in time, it would be a far better solution by miles. (*) -low powered basic functionality but fully useably adequate and cheap transport. The Citroen AMI, Renault Twizy, etc micro-cars/quadricycles exist so not only seem to be the closest recent iterations but validate the format: however these latter still lack much of the actual key functionality of the G-Whizz. I actually would think these the more laughable attempts!
I thought I'd love to have one of those, but decided I'd do something safer. Like play russian roulette with 5 chambers loaded. Better odds of survival.
You should check out the Biro micro cars, they're like a better more modern version of this! Technically it's a quadricycle, not a car, if I remember correctly, hence why it can get away without the modern crash requirements. Frankly it still seems like a luxury compared to a twizy, look at those real glass windows!
You cannot compare a £4,500 2001 G-Whizz to a £45,000+ 2020 jaguar I-Pace, except only if you scaled the I-Pace down to the same basic level. I can assure you then that's when the reality of the G-Wiz actual brilliance will hit you. It is the reason why cars like the Citroen 2CV, Mini Cooper and similar "basic" designs have always been the iconic designs they are, and will long remain after the i-Pace is gone. At the least, try making a video (objective comparison) against the Ami or Twizy?
Designed at the turn of the 21st century using a minimal amount of materials and compared with a Tesla designed in the recent past using considerably more materials and weighing probably as much as as road roller does. You would probably laugh your heads off if you got into an original Austin Mini and compared it with a Mercedes S500.
It is terrible in every way but at least show it terrible in a fair way. Don't compare it to a Tesla the Twizzy is the closest modern day equivalent and even that has twice the range, proper brakes and while subjective a funky design.
A sort of short evolutionary step up from the Sinclair C5. Given the choice of driving either or just walking instead I think walking would win pretty much every time, even in the rain… actually thinking about those brakes, especially in the rain 🤔

Kol's giggling is the best part of this vid... and combined with Jack's quiff, it's winner!

"I got range anxiety and we haven't left yet" 🤣
Fantastic video guys had me in stitches. Loving the Wii music in the background and the excitement over cup holders 🤣⚡👍
I know everyone’s having a laugh at this lil car, but as a person with disabilities, I’d be SO grateful to have one of these! I’d love one!
Genuine terror. They were so very pleased to finish. Hats off to them. They did it so that the rest of us don't have to.
I'm surprised at how solid those doors sounded when you closed them.
You forgot to mention the Citroen Ami... (Still waiting on that UK release too)
Be interesting to get some lithium batteries in that thing. After you put new brake pads on of course.
That cup holder is awesome design though :)
Plenty of devoted owners out there who do upgrade their G-Wizes
@@toyotaprius79 every lithium converted gwiz had the same range of a smart eq, much more compact... much more parking....at a 3rd of the price (sometimes even more)

Does a mobility scooter have more range?
Most of them, yes. Also equivalent top speed, and better acceleration. Plus smoother rides, and a much bigger trunk/boot.

just remember when this was designed and built. wow . will most probably be worth a fortune in 30 years time . put it in a barn now.
This one is never going to be a 1898 Ferdinand Porsche designed the Egger-Lohner C.2 Phaeton ...
Very good.
Kol giggles like evil from freight night

Test drive the Modec next time.
Decent vid that
Second best electric car ever made, after the Enfield 8000
EVERYONE should have one! :-D
No txs I would rather live
Why a repeat upload?
A guy in my village had one , last time i aw it was by the side of the road with the side stoved in , he must have been really badly hurt
I've seen this video before. Repost?
Yep! We originally published it when we were just getting started on UA-cam and thought it deserved a repost 🙂 Check the description 👍🏽
@@Electroheads I usually don't look at descriptions until I finish the video. Thanks though! Also, please review 8Tev B12!
It's like a 2000s Citroen ami
9.07 sounds like a Jet Engine 9:13 above Go Pro on windscreen gets over taken by a Jet 😂
errr... Wouldn't that be Twenty years, not Ten?
Well it started out as 20 but due to range loss: it's ten years now.
Would be nice to compare it to the g-wiz from Johnny Smith to see how far the g-wiz has come.
Can't wait till you review the e.GO!
Loved that little thing when I saw it at Goodwood FOS
Erm…. I think I will walk pmsl 🤣

According to the Mot history it’s done over 50,000 miles 😯
replace the lead acid battery's with lithium ones should get better range and more speed :D
Ahh, that's where BMW and VW got the idea of the simple controls from as fir the handbrake I heard you both mock, that is pure Citroen 2CV

If this car got hit by a big car like the Mini for instance, this thing would just disintegrate on impact 😂

The question is: How many original owners survived the G-Wiz?
3 apparently
Maths no so strong in this one then...
A case of,, What the actual.......... 😁
I bet the cost to buy one was way less than a Tesla or Jag. Strictly a city car, really just a glorified mobility scooter.
One of this is between 1000£ and 3000£ and one tesla second hand with over 100k miles is 30000£.... And the insurance for tesla is very expensive...
I think they use those in circuses

*Compare this to the Backfire Zealot* 😂🤣
I'm fond of modded versions of this car though
If you wanted really good extra power you ought to have plugged in your Camera!
If cars could communicate with other cars and auto emergency brake for safety, maybe it could be safer?
It isn't dangerous on an empty beach.
... hmm, are you sure it could outrun the tide?
Very large of a population can afford Tesla simple as that.

My escooter has a bigger boot
That thing is 4.8 KW at 48volts my ebike has more power then that! With its 12kw and 72volts
