In this video, I share a detailed look inside some of IEW's writing resources for the primary years (K-2). This video, IEW Part 1, includes a look inside Primary Arts of Language: Writing and the parent/instructor course Teaching Writing: Structure and Style. Part 2, linked below, consists of a walk through the digital sample of IEW's primary theme-based writing curriculum, People and Places in Our Community, and some tips on navigating the IEW website.

Thank you for this. I bought this with the intention of using it with two of my girls but then I couldn't figure out where to start or how to fit in to our schedule. I totally get it now haha.

Would you be able to explain a little more on how research doesn’t support the writing workshop model (near minute 27)? I am still figuring out curriculum and feel torn here.

Hi, writing research is hard to come by, but we know from extensive research on the science of reading that children benefit from a structured literacy approach. The writing workshop model, specifically Lucy Calkins' Units of Study, does not follow a structured literacy approach. I have a bunch of links on my website: www.homespunchildhood.com/writing-research
Keys to Literacy is a great resource, with many free webinars.

How necessary are the videos for the structure and style manual?

Great question! Depending on your comfort level in teaching writing, I think you can teach the program without the videos. The videos are essentially professional development. You can always try the program without the video course and add it on later if you need it.

    Is IEW secular?

I think I discuss this in the video :) IEW is not a secular company. However, most of their products are non-sectarian. Their Teaching Style and Structure courses are non-sectarian, many of the thematic programs are non-sectarian. I have not had any issues thus far.
