I finally bit the bullet and bought IEW for our homeschool this year. Watching your videos have help me so much. I bought the premiere package year 1A and basic plus package year 1B. It was an investment for us but, I know we really needed it. Thank you so much for all your videos on IEW because I have been on the fence for the last 2 years and I always come back to here your videos. They have help me decide for our homeschool. Thanks.
I was so frustrated with grading IEW but I still believe is the best writing system. Thanks for this video, it’s exactly what I needed. I just purchased the teacher training
Thank you for sharing this with us. I have been wondering the same thing. I purchased the Premium package and was wondering why I would need to watch these videos if I was relying on Andrew to do the teaching. Makes perfect sense if I am the editor…I need to know how to grade what he is teaching.
It's so helpful!
We love you Mandy! You're so adorable!
Aw thank you, friend!
Thanks! I need to do this before school starts too!
How do you grade them for a regular classroom ? I am struggling to convert the points to the 100 scale for the grade book. Another thing is, do you grade when they turn in their final draft together with everything on the list ? Or do they also get graded for the rough draft, correct it , give it back , then when they give the final draft do you do the checklist and give them a separate grade ? TIA
This is a general prep question. In many of your videos you mentioned about spending the summer reading through. How do you remember what you read when you are teaching you kids during the school year? Do you read again before you teach your kids? Do you make notes for yourself? Any tips you can give will be great. Thanks a ton!
Hi! I use a notebook and take notes. I make an outline and general questions I want to ask the kids there.
What is the time commitment to do the teacher training? Also my daughter is going into 4th grade- is that too early to do both fix it and structure and style? I’ve heard many say the S&S is too intense for that age and I had also heard people said it stifled their kid’s imagination in writing. Can you share your thoughts with me? I would value it. Love your channel!
Have you done more than 1 level of SS with a student? For instance my girls are in SS level A year 1. I was planning on year 2- but then do I go on to a theme based writing or keep doing SS??? I find IEW a bit confusing.
My understanding is you would keep going with the S&S levels. Unless you've done the teacher training videos, then you can choose either. Also, call IEW! Ive had to a few times with different questions and they are so responsive, kind and available.
Is there a teaching course for the IEW Fix It Grammar? I’m struggling to understand some of that, too. 🥴
No, however, Structure & Style works with Fit It Grammar. So they are getting additional grammar in Structure & Style. It's a full grammar program. They work together, but can be used separately.
Hello👋, thank you for sharing this video. We are trying IEW for the first time this year. I am interested in TWSS as well. Can a person complete TWSS using the binder only? Just wondering, if it possible to complete without the TWSS DVDS.
In Canada it is $189, so its a struggle to justify, but thank you for sharing your experience!
I found this training for $55 at our homeschool resource center. Excited to do the training.
So, people need to paid extra for this training?
It all just seems overwhelming. But i want to purchase. I might just not even get it.
I'm rewatching this video trying to decide if I'm going to finally take the TWSS and my 4 yo DD points to you and says "She's berry beautiful." :-)
Oh my goodness! What a sweetheart. Tell her I said thank you ❤️
I have the Structure and Style course and have never completed it, nor have my children ever used it because I didn't have time to complete the course. Approximately how many hours does it take to complete the S & S course? Thanks.
There’s 12 modules I think, but everyone works at their own pace. I put them on while I sat on my spin bike or cooked dinner. Some I say through and others I listened to. It took me about a week.
I am thinking about this for next year. This is our first year homeschooling and we are starting with Fix it Grammer. Do you think that between Fit it Grammer and the S&S program that it is a complete English Language Arts course?
I would add spelling (if you haven't), along with phonics or reading, but yes that's a good combo!
Hi. I've never used this before but wanted to try Fix It Grammar this year. Do I need to take this training for that or is this only for more complicated lesson plans (if that makes sense)? Thank you so much.
Hi! This is more for Structure and Style (the writing curriculum). You don't need this training for that.
@@mandy-maltz thanks!
What grade do you recommend to start with?
S&S starts in elementary school, so I would begin there. You can see some of the packages and download free trails of it here: iew.com/MandyMaltz-welcome
Where do we find the training,
Could you tell me how long it takes to do the teacher course? I am starting this year with my 5th and 6th graders. i got them the video program, since I don't have time to do the teachers' course yet, but I was planning to next year. This video is making me want to take it sooner, rather than later.
There are 12 videos and each one is about 60-120 minutes (most are around the 60-90 minute mark). If you do the practicum lessons, then add that in. That will be different for each person. I did 1-2 videos a day over the summer for about a week or so.
@@mandy-maltz Thank you! That's very helpful to know for planning.
Two questions. How long does this take?
And for us non-former teachers, and not type A personalities, what would this look like? I've been homeschooling for almost a decade but the more homeschooling videos I watch or blogs I read, I've realized most people I follow are all former public school teachers with that training. I've always heard that you don't need to have teacher training to homeschool, but the further I go the more insufficient I feel. I don't have good scheduling down, or taking these classes, etc. Maybe that makes sense?
Hi Sarah! There are 12 videos, each, varying in length. Each video is 60-120 minutes on average. The last 2 videos are of a classroom setting with kids and he shows how to teach the class with live kids. I can't really say how it would be for anyone but myself, but I don't think my training had anything to do with how I went through the class. I just popped it on the TV and watched the course when I had time.
@@mandy-maltz Thank you, the time isn't terrible. I guess I just feel inadequate that I don't plan enough, research enough, do enough, that I can't teach well. Not sure why that's hitting me after 9 years (probably partially because my oldest bombed math all last year). But I feel like all the people I look up to were teachers and do this thing way better than those of us just being "mom." I must be in a funk...
@@sarahbrown2725 My teaching degree and experience has proved to be worthless when it comes to homeschooling. It's completely different. All it did was put my husband and I into $30,000 of debt. I just try my best and outsource what I feel like I can't do well, and the Lord takes care of the rest ❤
Thank you. I do need to give more to the Lord.
Do you think its worth the $269 CAD?
This is also my first year to try Structure and Style with three of my kids. I feel like I need to watch all of the level B and C videos though so that I will understand what they are learning and the expectations in assignments. Do you feel like the TWSS would eliminate the need to watch the videos that the students watch?
Everyone is different. I watch both (or at least review the notes for the individual classes). If it's your first year with IEW, the TWSS will be a tremendous help. I wish I had done it my first year.
