In this video, I share a detailed look inside some of IEW's writing resources for the primary years (K-2). This video follows IEW Part 1, linked below. It includes a walk through the digital sample of IEW's primary theme-based writing curriculum, People and Places in Our Community, and some tips on navigating the IEW website.

I’m a homeschool teacher and want to use the K-2 IEW for my second graders. Do you feel that each student needs their own student book? Or can I structure it the way that Level A IEW is taught…..where the students have a binder.

I’m so curious about this program. I’ve kind of shied away from it because it seems so intimidating. My rising third grader has done Essentials in Writing this past year and loved it, and we plan to do level 3 alongside our LLATL program, but I’m thinking ahead to grade 4, and am wondering if he hasn’t used any IEW before where a good place to start would be? I was thinking ATFF but it seems so intense. How much of a time commitment is it per day? My son has ADHD and getting him to finish the basics ever days is a challenge enough. 😅 just wondering if this would be overkill. ✨

hi! EIW is a solid program, so if that has worked well for y'all, I would stick with it! Especially with ADHD - your son has likely already gotten comfortable with the rhythm and routine of EIW, so unless it's no longer a good fit, I would just stay put!

I saw it’s by weeks. How many days? Or how much time to finish a week?

I really think you can break it down in a way that best fits your schedule. Depending on the child, I would say 3-4 days/week with 15ish minute sessions.

Do you think students should have completed at least all about reading 1 before the community helpers? It looks like a lot of reading!

Yes, definitely. I would want a child to be able to read the material with ease to begin using it for writing instruction. If they have to use a lot of cognitive desk space to read the material, they will be mentally done before you even start the writing portion.
