Putting air tags to track someone's car is creepy enough but putting it on someones body is just straight up disturbing. The person who put the tracker on her absolutely had malicious intentions.

I'm glad they figured it out. At first I was shocked that police didn't take it seriously but then again, they usually don't. I was stalked one time and police told me "well, did he touch you or hurt you" I said no. They told me to call back when he does. I was floored over that remark.... so like this family tried to prevent a crime and were told its not serious, but if they didn't and something happened, then police would be like "well why didn't you say anything"

I had a similar situation when I was 19. A coworker who was about 30 years my senior didn't take it well when I said I had a boyfriend and wasn't interested in him and escalated quickly within the course of a day. I thought he asked "did you want a coffee from me?" but he was greek and his English wasn't great. I later I realized he was asking me out for coffee not offering me a coffee from our machine when he cornered me in the storage area and when I said "I'm sorry I have a boyfriend, I misunderstood you earlier" he punches the door and storms off. His shift ends 4 hours before mine and as I'm leaving for the night I notice a sedan with a lyft logo on it leave our parking lot and drive in the direction I'm walking. as I'm waiting to cross at a crosswalk I notice the same sedan again but don't think much of it. Then as I'm waiting at my bus stop it passes me again. 2 minutes later again, I'm the only one at the stop and its well after dark by now. It pulls up directly in front of me and he rolls the window down and at first is very smiley and friendly and offers a ride. I had the creeps by now so I politely decline. he insists again and I again say no. then he shouts "get in the fucking car" and begins to open his door as the shuttle arrives then when he sees the driver he closes his door and speeds off. I went to the police because it didn't sit right with me and they told me they can't do anything until he harms me physically or stalks me for at least 72 hours.

Well, im sorry but once they physically hurt you its too late.. crime prevention should be just as important

This is currently happening to my sister. She lives in Arizona (a state that is known as a high sex trafficking area). She can’t find the physical AirTag that is tracking her and Apple doesn’t have a way to disable it without the serial number. She went to the police and they haven’t been able to do anything to help her. She’s only 22, and she’s scared to death. For a fee of $300, bounty hunters have been able to pay companies who work with the cell phone carriers, to give them your exact cell phone location in real-time. The Verge did an article on it titled "Carriers can sell your location to bounty hunters because ISP privacy is broken" I remember reading a while back. Journalists were even able to get Trump's location I think I remember, or at least some high profile people and I remember they tested it and were able to verify it works. That's concerning if there's someone out there who wants you dead -- all they have to do is pay $300 on the black market to get your real-time location and bye bye. There's plenty of apps on your phone I'm sure who will gladly sell your location too.

Yo, what’s funny is, you can make a fake AirTag for about $5, that doesn’t notify the owner, and actually uses the AirTag mesh network! Apple is aware of this, they are allowing people to be tracked.
If you’re interested in exactly how, it essentially emulates one, with a rolling serial number, so the phone doesn’t see it as one AirTag. This cannot be prevented, because someone is going to encounter many airtags in a day, and getting notified about every one of them is not something an apple user wants to deal with, so this will continue to go unchecked.

In a crowded place like that where people are congregating for long periods, it could also be someone else nearby was walking in the same direction and going in the same areas. It seems likely because they would've heard it fall out after shaking their clothes. It isn't that small and would definitely be easy to see and hear. You're saying you were "followed around classes" by an AirTag? Sounds to me like it might just be a classmate carrying one. If someone's in your classes, they move from room to room when you do. Then when they decided to go study at the library once, they were no longer moving to the same locations as you. Maybe someone who dropped out, got a different schedule or whatever.
School is one of the few places where people will move from place to place at the exact same time, usually even walking (somewhat) together...

Even if students air tags were the culprit, it wouldn't explain the fact that the tag map on my phone showed that it followed me home when no one else in my house was in my classes or even remotely close to my classrooms. I am the only one out of 19 other people in my house that is a Psychology major, so for me it was really strange, cause no one has air tags in my house I lived in on campus either. If they never found the AirTag, how do you know it wasn't someone with an AirTag in their camera bag or purse who had a similar pattern of riding rides? Crowds tend to follow a pattern at Disney parks, and those that go against the pattern often use "touring plans" designed to beat the traffic patterns, but are themselves scheduled. But even if people acted randomly, with so many people there every day, the odds that it will occur that *any* 2 people follow a similar pattern *at some point* are almost certain. Per a quick Google search 5 months ago, Apple had sold over 25 million AirTags, and due to the cost of tickets and other expenses, it is reasonable to assume most Disney attendees can afford Apple products, and that a majority if them have iPhones. And given that a smartphone is almost obligatory for Disney Park attendance (not just for keeping your group together, but most functions like Lightning Lane ride passes and food odering) are handled through the Genie+ app). It is also highly likely that someone would bring an AirTag in their purse or other item to a crowded park where loss or theft is a concern. Since Apple is only automatically tracking a correlation between all iPhones and all AirTags, the likelihood that someone with an Airtag has a similar pattern to someone with an iPhone is almost certain. While the odds of predicting that for any one person are small, it was bound to happen that two tracks match close enough (no telling what close enough means to Apple's algorithm) given enough people cramned into a small space and given time. These people weren't in danger most likely, they were more likely bad at statistics. What is egregious is reporters who should know better are sensationalizing this. I think we will see more if this in areas like theme parks, sports stadiums, festivals, and other events with high concentrations of people, especially those that select for relatively affluent people who might own apple stuff by charging a significant ticket price.

imagine having a little bird follow you around, and instead of being a silent electronic it chirps and tweets ("hey listen")
your phone hears that bird and other birds and it can do two things very well: tell them apart / remember the ones it's heard as distinct; and, it can remember where/when it has heard each "bird song" , correlating patterns together.
now, the "bird" is a modern bird you see and knows how to tell its nest where it has been travelling all day, and possibly some little bird journal entries to send home for its family to know how it's doing out in the world.
this does not change the fact that your phone is capable of identifying that it is sure it has heard this same bird chirping its distinct little song in all the same places you have been... likely with a degree of understanding that the bird only started moving at each point AFTER you started moving

So I really like them. But I know thieves use them for wrong doing too.

@@frostythehoeman6969 yep well we need tougher sentences.
Even better than that we need total satellite coverage of the globe. Then everyone is watched 24 hours a day and no one can deny anything. Animals in Africa would be safe. No more thieves in the most except shop lifters. Over head watch ing cant stop that. Shops need cameras and tiles end of each isle which weigh you. Or scanners to verify no thieving

My father works at apple, it is not possible for apple to disable all airtags at one time, even though all airtags are in reach of apple, being their creators. Once they are bought, there is no way for them to track the device and somehow shut it down.

How is Apple responsible? People have been making trackers for decades. This isn't an apple problem, the user incorrectly used the product. Not apples fault at all, and they warn people that this could happen.

It’s not a nightmare they got a notification it was probably erroneous it’s crazy that this is NEWS today. If they found an AirTag that would be different. It’s easy to turn your location services off. If it’s connected to your phone you have to have your settings set to connect to new devices.
