I would also suggest that criminals would be using this to not only steal your car, but also know when your car is not at home, so they could break into your house when your car is not at home.
Half the time police are like this, the other half they are dealing with the people he is warning about, then all of a sudden people whine about them doing their jobs.
The same thing occurred to me. A guy sees a woman he is attracted to, he sees what car she got out of and he tags it. Next thing you know this guy follows you and finds out where you live and where you are everywhere. Worse yet some pedophile tags your little boy's bicycle.
There are 20+ MILLION invaders running around the country that we have zero clue about. Unless it's a violent crime the po po will take a report...and that'll be the end of that. No one is "working" these kinds of crime.
People who steal make me sick. Someone works hard for what they have and thieves think it’s okay to set up schemes like this to steal someone else’s hard earned money. Good job on informing people.
You didn’t “work” for it, you got it because of privilege. They’re just taking back all the stuff you took from them while they were sitting on their butt.
Worse yet are the "it's just stuff" idiots who think spending what you earn on something tangible makes you unworthy of help from cops. Why is it that cops (and others) view kicking in someone's door and stealing to sell for drug money minor offenses?
This is scary. I’m a flight attendant and found an AirTag in my carrier. When My crew and I were heading to the hotel my phone alerted me. When I got to my room I looked through my bags and found it in the front pocket of my carrier. Alerted the security team of my airline and supervisors and my whole team was moved to another hotel. If your ever traveling make sure to check your things when you land.
Good thing nothing happened to you and good work for your company to actually care and move you guys. Id imagine some rando could care less about robbing me. And if they did i doubt id move hotels
I always cover my VIN. I’ve done it for about 20 yrs. It’s a good idea. I heard a story of a family that found an Air Tag in their 13yr old daughters backpack while visiting Disney world. Apparently, some had been following her for a couple of days! Thank you Mark and Tom for looking out for all of us.
If you keep AirTags in your valuable possessions, the thief will be alerted there’s an AirTag in it. So I don’t use them. But nice to know what to do if I’m alerted to one near me😊
@@rheeryder2524 The VIN is the vehicle identification number. It gives all kinds of information about your vehicle and can be used to find out where the owner lives. Car Thieves are now able to clone your VIN and use it on a stolen vehicle, making your vehicle look stolen. I cover mine with an index card. You can’t permanently destroy it. I only cover the VIN plate on the dash. It’s located to the left (driver side), close to where the dash meets the glass, some people cover door VIN’s as well-that’s up to you. I hope that helps!
Honestly, never have I seen so much theft in all my years and I'm 67. Now this and the reality they will not only take your car or whatever, they now know where you live. Thank you officer, it's important to talk about these possibilities.
I'm 66, live here in the Czech Republic and see no thefts whatsoever. Lived in the US and Australia and know what you're talking about. Not that the thieves don't exist here, but it's the area you chose to live at that is dangerous.
@@Alarix246Not everyone necessarily has a choice about where they live. It has to do with whether or not they have the means, and there are all kinds situations where it's just not feasible. Also some places that have had very little crime slowly changed over time and became a high crime area. So it's not so simple for a lot of people.
There is a sizable number of violent criminals being let out of jail lately. Also in some places thieves are permitted to steal and totally get away with it if it's under a certain amount money or value (like under $100 or something?). They can rob stores and the police can be called and the police will do nothing. Also, cartels are coming in from the border and are causing more crime and violence. There's a number of other factors as well. It's going to get worse.
I have the same question But I am thinking that they use a computerized tool where they punch in the VIN number and it's able to unlock the car and then digitalize a new chip for the car

People laugh at me for putting my steering wheel lock every time I park. I tell them, “if you’re in a rush to steal a car, are you going to go for the one that has a visible item you’d need a heavy big tool to cut or are you going to go for the sucker parked next to it with nothing on it” Now if they really want your car, they’re going to get it no matter what (when there’s a will there’s a way), but that extra time they’re taking to try and take it, someone might spot them or you might make it back in time. It also helps to drive manual knowing most people don’t know how to anymore 🤣
Spot on and a very wise move - its a very effective and cost effective deterrent, you will always have the last laugh. My cheap autolok (handbrake to gear stick clamp in my manual car) saved me losing my vehicle. The potential thief smashed the key barrel of my drivers door (that was 50 quid to replace), opened it, saw the lock, kindly closing the door and moved on to take some other poor devils car, the police told me they had taken several that night in our village. Moral of story thieves usually want easy pickings with minimal effort and risk on their part.
3 times in 20 years I've seen people messing with people's vehicles in store parking lots and everytime I've called cops and stuck around and watched them. All 3 people went to jail. 1 guy had drugs on them and was trying to mark the car to fallow it later. The other two were trying to find an unlocked car to steal from and both had guns on them. Thank you sir for this information
Stalking is a punishable offence too you know. You could get sued even if the person turns out to legitimately be involved in criminal activity. If they can prove you have been sitting out for hours in parking lots trying to stalk on people and tracking their activity in a private space, such as a parking lot, you can end up losing lots of money if the person is spiteful and wants to draw out a legal process for as long as possible to dry out your pockets in legal fees. People will try to financially ruin you if it comes down to them doing years behind bars. Be careful.
I live in Seffner Florida and was leaving the Walmart and my iPhone notified me that I had an AirTag and my son and I found it in the back of my truck. I keep thousands of dollars of tools in my truck. My truck is an older truck so I think they were trying to get the tools.
I bought a nice used 2016 GMC truck a week before Christmas and was in line to wash it Christmas Eve went to fold in my Mirrors and noticed someone cut my bed cover! At first thought maybe it just had split on its own but there was a cut line on the plastic ribs that go across the bed and it had razor blade mark in line with the bed cover slash. My tailgate locks when my doors do so guess they wanted to see if anything was in there to steal.
it was a hot day so left my truck windows cracked. When my family and I got back to the truck my son noticed a airbag on the back seat. I drop the airtag outside the vehicle and left.

Although a US resident, thank you for sharing this important data. Thieves cross borders and in challenging times become more resourceful. May you and yours...Be In Good Health.😎
If not already pointed out in comments, the Android App (by Apple) only makes you wait 10 minutes (not 20 minutes as stated in video). You have to be in range the entire 10 minutes, it will then allow you to turn on the speaker to emit an alarm so you can find it faster. The more savy criminals know this and they manually deactivate (destroy) the speaker in the device so you can't easily find it. If they take time to hide it well and deactivate the speaker, it can be considerably more difficult to find the tracker. At least you know its there and you will be able to find it eventually.
The legal system doesn’t have much bearing on whether people become criminals or not, the fault lies in failings of other systems. I am not excusing crimes or saying that the criminals should not be held accountable, but a lot of people become thieves because they feel that they have no other options and they need money badly. Idk where you are from, but in the US, there are many stories about people stealing to feed their families, or to get enough money for medicine like insulin which is ridiculously expensive. And there are stories of people who rob a place and take a few dollars, then sit and wait for the police to come arrest them because they want to get the free food and shelter that jail provides. I read an article a while ago about a man who robbed a bank and was glad to be going to prison because his wife would get a life-saving surgery for significantly cheaper. The legal system works exactly as it is designed to, it is all the other systems that make criminals. Underfunded schools, underpaying jobs, exorbitantly high prices on healthcare and houses, both rent and mortgages. Meanwhile the police in most counties across the states receive a lion’s share of funding, and places like libraries, schools and homeless shelters continue to get cuts.

When you find the AirTag before pulling out the battery, you can put it at the top of your iPhone’s NFC Band, (the same area that uses Apple Pay at Retail Shoppes). It will then flash up a screen that will link you to the Serial Number of the AirTag AND the last four digits of the Trusted Phone Number on File to the Apple ID of who originally registered it to themselves so it can work & track in the first place. So you can screenshot that and do not disconnect the AirTag yet so they aren’t aware and get the local law enforcement involved and they’ll get their ass. Also the Find My App for the person being tracked shows a full dash and red dot tracking system of where they were followed; so take a screenshot of that before tacking out the battery when the AirTag is found. Also take a picture of where the AirTag was on the vehicle before removal for more hard evidence
How exactly do they protect people? And what services do they provide except for ruining people's lives by throwing them in jail for stupid victimless crimes. You're just one of them bootlickers aint yet. F the 🐖 police
iPhones specifically have a feature to prevent this. If an AirTag that is not yours is suddenly remaining near your phone while you’re moving around, the phone will give you an alert to make you aware that somebody may have placed an AirTag in your bag or something.

These were used to track whenever my husband was going to work to stock Magic cards. They always knew exact time he would be at the store. He had crowds surrounding him anytime he went to each of his stores. Always the same people. One time he had week vacation and I went shopping with him with our kids and that same crowd surrounded us. Was scary. Eventually crowds got so bad, one of the stores filed a complaint against him for informing customers (which he wasnt doing). His boss followed up later and informed us about these trackers people were using to track some of the other employees. We didnt know what these trackers looked like so he used his other vehicle that he never drove and went to work. No crowds surrounded him that week. It was an airtag being used in his other vehicle.

Thank you, Mark and Tom, for having posted this instructional video for us. It is good to make us all aware of the potential threats that are out there. We have a steering lock on our CRV, and I believe that this has already deterred one thief from stealing this vehicle. We found a cigarette butt on the windshield in the morning where some ill-intentioned type would be likely to look inside before breaking into it. I don't doubt that the lock was what made the difference.
I do the same with the steering club bar 😅 but unfortunately no one look at my car because it is too old no one want it just me. . 😢. I wish my car was desirable 😅
That cigarette may have been a marker so the thief got the right car. It's sad that there are those who will try and take what you've worked so hard for. It's happened to me twice but I assure you it won't happen again.
That’s interesting, CK. I have a Kia and have been reading about thieves targeting them because some TikTok videos show how to steal them. So I bought a steering wheel lock, a cable with a piece that locks into the seatbelt. We don’t have much crime on our street but if the car ever is stolen, I can show my insurance company that I took action to prevent it. (Also have an appt to have the Kia dealer update the software.)
This is why everyone needs to buy their own air tags to be able to find their car when it's taken like I did. Also, you can buy the new Ring car cam. Same as the doorbell but for your car. You can see around it or who is in it. You can even talk to them.
But it just makes me furious that the security companies, ring/adt, etc. and air tag manufacturers get to make billions because of the fear we feel. I would much rather give the cops a huge raise to equip them with better tools to get these creeps.
Must say I am shocked at how surprised so many are at how helpful this police officer is being. Almost all cities in Canada have Community officers who do this kind of thing every day and have for at least 30 years. Only the tips have changed and the method for sharing them. 🥰🇨🇦
There are good and bad people everywhere and I am sure police are no different but maybe if you saw what they see every day in their lives you might have a different perspective. I can’t tell you how many times this year I have heard stories about how the police that are responding to a call are shot and killed just getting out of their vehicle. I have also seen in many incidents how disrespected they are. Maybe you ought to stop and think what it would be like without the police there to protect you. I am just thankful there are people out there that are willing to risk their lives to keep their community safe and I guess if you think that you could do a better job maybe you can become an officer and save your community.
Behind the battery area is the sound unit which the nefarious people will remove so the air tag will not sound. I saw that you can do that for your own tags when you hide one on your own car. So if someone steals it they will maybe see there’s a tag on board but not be able to hear it therefore hindering them finding it easily.
Thank you to this officer for sharing the great information. I noticed on newer cars, Ike mine, the vin number so sealed behind the windshield and cannot be covered up. Does anyone know what do do in this situation ?
Thank you Officer Riciardi and officer and Officer Balaga, we need to know about this kind of information. Thank you and God Bless you both and your Boss for allowing you to teach us.

I snuck over behind a big oak tree like 5 feet from the car in an old halloween costume when he was at the other end of the road. He walked up to it and had a tool in his hand. When he got like 3 feet away I jumped out and screamed as loud as I could “I WILL EAT YOUR FACE!!!” I’ve never seen anyone get more scared and run faster in my life, and he was heavy. I took the AirTag to the large traffic light at the main intersection and used a small foldable ladder to stick it like 10 feet high. Question from the US: While I appreciate your PSA here, and it was nice of you all to take the time to educate and help the public, near the end of the video, you also recommend covering your car's VIN number to reduce the chance of it being stolen. I Googled to try to get an answer as to why that would make it harder for thieves and less likely for a car to be stolen, but all of the answers that I got online were that it actually makes it easier for thieves to steal your car because they hate VIN's since they make it easier for police to identify stolen cars. Would you please explain your statement and why that's the case? Is it a difference between how it works in the US and Canada, or is there some other key reason? Thanks.
If you own an apple iPhone or tablet that is connected to a cellular service, you will be notified that there is an air-tag tracking you. That warning/notification will happen pretty quickly too. Apple knew that there might be some people/criminals that might use these tags for nefarious reasons, so Apple made sure to implement a safeguard against that.
Great job , it's nice to hear that this man is taking his job seriously and helping the public. Remember they are human too. Thanks for your service Sir.
It’s all good until someone steals a car or hurts someone using this method, then the victim or their family blames this video with this officer, they want his job, his pension, and millions from his department.
Another app to detect bluetooth based trackers is AirGuard. Cover your VIN. Hide an ignition disable switch in your vehicle. Affix and wrap SS cable around your catalytic converter. Anti-theft lugs for your wheels. Don't leave anything of value, or even a coat visible inside (could be covering something valuable, and it will cost a window for a thief to look). The world we live in.
Same thing with tiny cameras they put on anyone's personal stuff, it shows location, video and audio and could be put online for everyone to watch, follow and listen to you but they're so small you can't see them
The VERY least Apple could do is make it mandatory that every air tag is attached to a phone number/owner. That way when you discover one you can press charges for stalking, etc. But mostly this security measure would deter criminals. Apple will face many air tag lawsuits in the future. Many.
Could also be used to tag cars they see in driveways of houses they would like to break into when the car they tagged is no longer in the driveway. Thank you Toronto police for this info. 👍

This is what’s so lame about air tags… people who want to use them to track their own property can’t even depend on them because they can be disabled by thieves who have iPhones or tracker detector apps 🤦🏾♂️
@@WhoTFVotedBiden you are a brain donor. These things have helped people recover millions of lost items. They arn't meant to help you find STOLEN items. Apple doesn't even want you confronting criminals. Imagine going to go get your stolen back pack and wind up getting shot in in the face.
Unbelievable to think that they are being used in this way. Wonderful that the Police did this clip, bet there’s lots more that they could tell us about.
I thought they were only a bluetooth signal with a 30-100ft potential? How do the tags get tracked so far as to be used to track where people have driven home?
To all content creators out there: Doing unboxing videos of fan submitted content at home is now a HUGE risk! All some stalker has to do is ship one of these to your P.O. Box. You take it home to unbox it on video, and boom, you’ve been doxxed. Unfortunately it’s safer now to either stop doing unboxing videos, or screening every item sent to you at the post office before you take it home.
They have to know my PO Box number first. That's something I'm not worried about. If you're suggesting that a stalker is randomly mailing these out then they must have money because just four of these AirTags are about $100.
Sounds like a good way to lure a car thief into a trap too. They would think they are about to steal a car, meanwhile little do they know you are about to steal them for "basement funtime".
When I watch videos like this, it just makes want to keep my 17 year old Honda which is not worth stealing. Plus, it's a manual so it is REALLY undesirable in today's world. Most thieves would be perplexed by the stick shift.
Hah. Reminded me of when I bought my last new car - I went standard transmission. Same as my 1st car (64VW Beetle). It's hard to use a stickshift AND your phone at the same time unless you're just 'blah blah blah' with it mounted somewhere.
In that case, there's two different thieves you may need to consider. Crackhead joyride thieves that will steal any car, who don't know shit about cars, drive it around and leave it abandoned somewhere. You're right, by the numbers this kind of thief probably won't steal a manual. The other type are thieves that specifically target cars for stripping parts. 90's hondas are particularly vulnerable because of their performance potential (which means there's a much wider market for restoration and used parts). Most Honda thieves have modified Hondas of their own, manual is literally no concern, it's preferable because nobody wants automatic transmissions for a performance build. So if it's a 2005 then it's not a double wishbone suspension car like the 90s which makes it less desirable, and if it's an economy trim you're probably safe. But a manual k-series engine car such as a Civic Si is still an easy overnight payday. If you have a Honda relevant to tuners like I do, you have to treat it as if specialized thieves are literally hunting your car. It's 1000x worse. Manual transmissions are still a huge part of car culture young and old
@@5PYZ3R - it is an Si model, but I've never had any issues. I don't think the hatchback Si's of that era were very popular, although I love it personally. It kind of looks like a small minivan from certain angles, which really hurt its popularity. Here in Florida, I now only see one or two (of that era) on the roads during an entire year of driving. Not many left. Thanks for all the good info.
Question: how does covering your VIN make your car harder to steal? Why would a thief need to know the VIN? Also, you can usually look up the VIN with an online app if you know the plate number.
@@pimpinisanoncontactsport2096 I couldn’t agree more. Not only has it spoiled people and made them lazy, I also believe technology plays a huge role in the decline of our populations mental health and emotional state. The more “advanced” we get, more and more people become mentally ill in one way or another. Nature has designed human beings to thrive in the natural world but instead we struggle in an artificial one. Just look at the tribal people in the world, like the Masai for example, they have zero technology yet they’re all very happy and stress free. I work at a crematorium and someone used one of these on their pet suspecting that they wouldnt get their pets ashes, the only problem is when exposed to high heat the airtag is destroyed so they wouldnt believe the ashes were their pet even though the remnants of the airtag were in the ashes because the app displayed the last location it was before being destroyed.
When my dog died we cremated him. We paid extra to watch them do the deed. You can watch it on your iPhone or iPad. I did see them put him in the crematorium. I had to turn away when they started the fire. But this is the way to go if you are not sure what the hell they are doing with your pet.

3:08 How does having your VIN exposed aid a thief in stealing your car? For decades, car dealerships have been pushing to have your VIN etched into your windows for "security" reasons.
Thieves register your VIN on a stolen vehicle and it takes MONTHS to get it cleared up. Cover your visible VIN on your dash with electrical tape, stuff paper between the glass and the dash… prevention is so much cheaper than the recovery.
The vin would certainly let a thief quickly look up the stock security for the vehicle and also assess the worth of the vehicle. Possibly even figure out how to start it.
For someone who knows how to decode a VIN it would just tell them about the car ie type of engine, accessories, ect. However to think there are gangs of criminals running around parking lots to look at vins is Ludacris. They steal based on the model of car and parts that can be easily stripped/resold. And if they are already involved in the industry with stealing cars they dont need to read a vin to know a cars worth to them.
Wow, this is an excellent video! Thank you for for the warning and for the follow up problem solving advice. It is SO good to be given solutions and not just left in fear..May God bless you & keep you.
This is a well appreciated advisory. This goes back to the basic axiom of any technical advancement - if y’all develop it, surely there is someone, somewhere, that will apply said concept for nefarious purposes…
Something I learned from being in law enforcement: If you ever come home and find your home broken into, but nothing is disturbed or missing.....check all of your windows. They will all, most likely, be unlocked, so they can come back later and easily enter your home.
Lol why would anyone go to the trouble of breaking in just to unlock the windows so that they can break in later? Besides anyone who finds their place broken into is automatically going to check all doors and windows as well as all their stuff to see what's missing
Just FYI, it’s also possible to set up a roadrunner like trap. Drawing a picture of your car on the wall in your driveway. When the thief’s come you can deploy a plethora of traps. I would go with a steel bar jail cell that drops from the sky trapping the thieves.

Now if they really want your car, they’re going to get it no matter what (when there’s a will there’s a way), but that extra time they’re taking to try and take it, someone might spot them or you might make it back in time.

Good info. Thanx. 👍

The legal system needs to make it less desirable to be a criminal.
Then you will pay less taxes, that’s not beneficial.

Dude jumped out of a car at the end of the road, walked down the cul de sac like he was just out for a stroll. Car waited at the other end by the park.

Thank you for instructing us non-iPhone users how to address this. Much appreciated.
Manual transmissions are still a huge part of car culture young and old
Can't wait to see the memes in 20 years about how kids tried to steal a car, but got caught because it was a 2003 Mazda 3 manual
Something tells me that professional car thieves don't have problems with driving stick lmao

If you find a tracker on your car, you could also mess with them by forgetting the tracker on a city bus. This would not work so well if they already know your home address, but if you are traveling and find one it might be an option.
???? sooo, the cops see the tag at your address and then on city bus so YOU get blamed for it?? not very bright , are you?
@@TANTRUMGASM What?
just report it to the police. its a ton of laws being broken. they can easily back track it to the registered source.
@@geronimo5537 Not easily. Unless someone is murdered, they're not going to bother.

All great advice, thanks! However, I don't understand how covering the VIN number prevents car theft.
Yeah, ditto.
Google is a wonderful thing but apparently they need a VIN number to cut a key code for all the cars that are electronic.
@@samdefore2692Thank you.
If you loose your keys you will find out why....
How does covering your VIN keep your car from being stolen?
you could do us so much good and help us greatly if you continue doing these helpful videos. To have an officer do these videos makes it much more serious than any others who might talk about these things.
Thanks for confirming how predators hunt by tracking then attacking. No one believed me. Hope this helps others
Wow. I dont even know what to say
@@anonfornow359 So sad people believe they shall burn the body of their beloved ones, instead of returning them to mother earth or the mother sea.
Sounds quite devlisish, ain't it ?
How does putting a tracker help in anyways other than track the vehicle or thing? I may need to research this a bit more. Thanks for sharing
and to think i had an air tag message a few weeks ago randomly at home, wild that we gotta find a safe place away from the public to do a brief inspection on our own vehicles just so you dont get attacked
Just glue some razors to the inside of your door handles. But don't forget they are there lol
So someone put an Airtag inside your house?
Paranoia big destroya 😂
“The times they are a changing.”
3:08 How does having your VIN exposed aid a thief in stealing your car? For decades, car dealerships have been pushing to have your VIN etched into your windows for "security" reasons.
I also want to understand this.
For the new keyless ignitions newer cars have, thieves could gain access to these vehicles using the Vin number.
THANK YOU OFFICER for making this video to US. TRUE PUBLIC SERVICE OFFICER . . . OBVIOUSLY . . .

Hello,
Thank you very very much for the informations and the advices.
Do you have advices for off the grid gps trackers or other devices? When the vehicule isn't in a cell phone area.
