I used to catch fish from Brisbane Creeks when I was a kid. We took then home and kept them as pets. We did not fancy equipment, just a bucket. This video brought back memories. Nice video. Thank you :)
I just found your channel, those beautiful green swords are $7 to $10 each plus shipping here in the USA. And, you catch them for free, wow!. Definitely a new subscriber here!
My friend was involved in the revefetation of Kedron Brook. Most of the Brisbane rivers and creek were improved by the council and government bodies. Great video thank you ❤
Great video mate! catch as many of those swordtails as you can, good to see young Empire Gudgeons and a couple of Australian Smelt, I used to do this as a kid as well, good to see you didn't seem to get any Gambusia though.
There was allot more gudgeons and smelt than there was swordtails in this particular part of the brook I caught heaps in one of the other traps off camera that I didn’t put in because I was focusing on swordtails for this video
more swordtail videos please lol, I've also found a spot not sure if you've been there before but there are a lot of swords there been trying to catch some for ages
Awsome Swordtail. I loved to have a place to catch Swords. I breed Red Alpha Swordtail very Rare . I love all of them tho. If you have Sailfin Mollies it would be cool to catch aswell.
Only fish in Kedron brook when growing up. VERY FRUSTRATING FOR A KID. Fortunately not as polluted as 60s, 70s now. Natives back,. Lots of more discoveries in creeks out there. Have fun❤😊
I know a drain in Deception Bay, no bigger than 1mX1m in size. I catch sword tails, colourful platties, empire gudgeons and sometimes glass fish. Within 10 minutes the trap has 100+ fish in it. Swordtails in the 1000s. Like your videos mate, being able to catch your own fish for the tank is great fun. Keep up the good work 🙏
Nice job. Lucky to have a creek/stream to catch Swordtails in. Curious to know how Australia got Swordtails in the river ecosystems? Those are native to Mexico and Central America.
Look out for piranha! Back in the 70s people on the Northern Rivers had them in an outdoor pond until a flood washed them into the Richmond River... but the most likely didn't survive???
Mate, at 2.38 everything growing between those rocks is Singapore Daisy which confirms how disturbed this locations. And over the creek the red flowered trees are Erythrina, Coral Tree, from South America. Council removing trees and leaving the weeds. That's what we pay Councils to do. Could ANY native fish still exist there? km Been trying to find info on natives and exotics here, but not much luck. I'm in Yeppoon on the Tropic of Capricorn. Hope to read a reply.
Great to watch your videos mate, 50 years ago me and my mates were doing the same, catching Sword Tails in Downfall Creek and Cabbage Tree Creek, Chermside. Using fish traps we made out of plastic drink bottles with bread inside. The prize catch of the day was always the male Red Tail Sword, they were a bright red and few and far between. Saw some in your video, but the ones we caught were really bright red. Do you still see the odd Red Tail?
I bought a fish trap. I'm in the south island of NewZealand 🌸 so baited my trap with bread and set it in a creek for couple of hours. When I went to collect it, the top had been ripped to shreds by water rats 😔😞

One of the “lakes” around the city holds an incredible amount of nearly all the aquarium fish sold here. If you walk around the “lake” and find the little streams off it you even find hundreds of Siamese fighters. They’ve been there that long that they have started to go back to the wild colours.
How do you find these places full of the sword tails I have been looking for so many years and found none around Brisbane can you tell me where this is i would love to get a couple for my 4ft fish tank. This was an amazing video
Matttteee , seriously you wanna start clearing some of the population these fish JC slaughter falls picnic area as soon as you drive in there’s one small puddle and another one a little bit further up video coming next week. I fought over 1000 of them in less then 30mins. Insane amount
Its quite sad really because these introduced fish from the aquarium trade outcompete for habitat and food our amazing Australian native species like rainbow fish, gudgeons, gobies, blue eyes, empire fish and more species depending on where in Australia you are. I have found a huge lack of knowledge about the smaller Australian freshwater fish. If anyone is interested in learning more ANGFA is a good place to start searching.
I think it's pretty poor behaviour when someone asks why to just jump on them with that judgemental crapp for simply asking why. I would have asked the same. Thankfully someone answering the question with invasive species fixed that which is all that was needed. When someone asks a question you don;t have to be asshole and the video could have explained a bit better!!

Unfortunately, they must be taken from the waterways
You need a pond and stock it free. Some pet stores might buy them off you too.
You would get a better feed catching them with a fishing rod, they are too small to eat
