DISCLAIMER TO VIEWERS: DO NOT release aquarium fish back into the local natural water sources, they will introduce diseases that will decimate the native populations or compete with them or cause an imbalance like eating up the young or eggs etc. Look at other videos where the locals have done this stupidly and killed off everything natural out of sheer stupidity. Doing that is an irresponsible act, enjoy nature responsibly.

Fascinating seeing the habitats you showed and finding out that Swordtails are an invasive species in Australia. I noted that they have reverted to the original wild form in colour.

The first one you caught probably was a goldfish but just had the wild colours. If you go to a pet shop you can see the feeder goldfish and pond goldfish since they’re also wild caught have the more wild colours. Also the swordtails when you thought they were gold coast, not sure if you know but they definitely are invasive just like any of the other aquarium fish. The only really native aquarium fish we have are rainbow fish, lungfish, etc.

Little brown snakes love frogs & little fish.. and can kill you..

Took my daughter down to a brisbane creek with a small net and a bucket, caught some nice small fish that are now in our aquarium. So much more engaging than just buying them, and you at least take some invasives out of the ecosystem.

I think it's pretty poor behaviour when someone asks why to just jump on them with that judgemental crapp for simply asking why. I would have asked the same. Thankfully someone answering the question with invasive species fixed that which is all that was needed. When someone asks a question you don;t have to be asshole and the video could have explained a bit better!!

Its quite sad really because these introduced fish from the aquarium trade outcompete for habitat and food our amazing Australian native species like rainbow fish, gudgeons, gobies, blue eyes, empire fish and more species depending on where in Australia you are. I have found a huge lack of knowledge about the smaller Australian freshwater fish. If anyone is interested in learning more ANGFA is a good place to start searching.

Look out for piranha! Back in the 70s people on the Northern Rivers had them in an outdoor pond until a flood washed them into the Richmond River... but the most likely didn't survive???

Not being a hater mate but you do know they are Illegal to keep and move ext you can fish for them and dispatch them but huge fine for keeping and moving them as they are such an invasive species.. yes they can look good but definitely not worth the fine or the risk introducing to other areas.

Awesome vid man! Keep up the good work. You should set up some ponds with all the invasive fish. There are a few other species of the ones you just caught closer to Byron or the dams in the hinterland of that region which is well documented.

This location actually used to be a quarry, it struck water underground and filled up, the Jack Dempseys have been there since 2003 with many many attemtps to eradicate them, including poison, electrocution, explosives and adding bigger species, unfortunately but also fortunately for people like you and me those attempts failed, I've got 2 males in a tank currently that I've had for a while now.

That's just around the corner from my place.

Id try a small circle hook. It wont gut hook. It will lip hook everytime if they bite and try and run. Dont hook them tho. Let the rod and line tension lip hook them. Just a thought mate.
