Same here. I can’t seem to figure out how to keep my curls defined after I dry my hair. I’ll put in conditioner and it looks amazing for half an hour but after that it disappears
You can really only tell what hair type you have when its very well kept and is around cheek length. What I mean by well kept is low frizz, highly hydrated, defined, and well bonded (+protein). An example of this is: straight/wavy hair to healthy curly hair transformations or frizzy 4c hair (some people think they have 4c hair because 4c hair is typically depicted as undefined and frizzy, however, well kept 4c hair typically will not be very frizzy *unless it's a styling choice* although frizz is completely natural for type 3 and 4 hair) to 4a/3c/4c hair mix. (I think almost everyone has a hair type complex of 3 or 4 hair types)
This is honestly so discouraging to discover. I was told to repair my hair, I need to know the type to know what products to use and how to manage it. I've been guessing around for years. But if you're saying it has to be healthy to even know, and I've been advised I need to know to get it healthy... damn, I'm just ready to shave it all off.
@@Datura981 *I got you* (It's not that long, I promise) You don't exactly need to know the type to take care of it other than when it comes to styling (because you probably know that for example, people with curlier hair need stronger hold for definition). If you know your hair is naturally curly but it's too damaged to tell the type, you should go for curly to coily products. If you know your hair a naturally on the straight or wavy side, go for straight for wavy products. If a LARGE portion of your hair is damaged, I'd recommend either gradually trimming your hair to the healthy parts every wash day or chopping off all the damaged parts with shears (make sure they're scissors for hair because if not, they could damage your hair). If you mechanically, chemically, heat, color, etc damage your hair, you should use protein treatments and bond builders. The only true bond builders I've seen on the market that actually have bond building ingredients (not just cuticle sealers like Redken) are Olaplex, K18, Bondbar, and Epres. The best protein treatment I've seen on the market is ApHogee's Two-Step Protein Treatment. On the wash day that you use a protein treatment do not use a bond builder. Deep condition your hair every week. You probably have high porosity hair (water comes in and leaves quickly), so you won't need to steam or warm your hair to temporarily raise the cuticle (it's already raised as it's high porosity). You'll only need to deep condition for 10 - 30 minutes. I wouldn't recommend more than thirty as people with high porosity hair can easily get hygral fatigue (when water gets into the cuticle) which is really hard to get rid of unless you trim your hair. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS end your hair routine with an occlusive cuticle sealer, especially as someone with high porosity hair. High porosity hair means your cuticle is raised so you need to seal it. This will help you end your routine with shinier, healthier, and protected hair. One oil to look out for is olive oil. It's very occlusive (traps in water that you easily lose) and seals the cuticle. If you decide to make DIY oil, I'd mix it with something more lightweight. (If you use a clarifying shampoo, hair oils with silicones such as dimethicone are great!) -If you can get information on your products, alwaysuse low pH products to get the cuticle as low as possible (the more alkaline, the more raised the cuticle. You should avoid using any high pH shampoos or soaps). Don't forget to detangle each wash day!
