I have no access to internet in my home for the kids, made my kids day user only school tablets, the schools in Greene county and Washington county TN gave them chrome books, that are wide open once they leave the school. I don't want them chrome books in my home, I unplug my kids, school is school home is home. Parents do not know they can demand their kids off internet access in school and do assignments on paper, Mine all do home work on paper and turn it in, The teachers have gotten lazy and want them to do every thing on a chrome book that automatically grades the school work. NO teach my kids is what I complain to the school. Kids do not need computers to be talking and texting

They're kids. They still have a constitutional right to freedom of speech and expression.
Prosecution by the school district is an effort to distract parents and the community, that nothing is actually being done to curb violence in schools.
In all honesty, it makes actual future potential threats less likely to broadcast their intentions.

Bomb threat hoaxes were fairly common in the 80s & 90s, but were somewhat laughed off, because they so rarely materialized. Colleges took them more seriously, because some campuses actually had pipe bombs or riots in the 60s & 70s. We had plenty of tests delayed or classes held outdoors, as a result. Difference is social media means we now hear about every threat in every podunk town across the country, causing the impression of an increase & some temporary spikes from copy cats. Online culture got ADULTS & kids used to anonymous, impulsive speech. Kids aren’t the ones who stalk health officials & election workers, assault service employees, demonize teachers, attack statehouses or the Capitol or start riots at civil rights events. Any adults who supported those bad role models can’t now finger wag when kids think fake threats aren’t so bad. Other difference in why we hear about them, is the real threat of school shootings mean law enforcement gets more involved, vs it being handled by schools. This recent uptick is because local cops now have more ability, funding & public pressure to TRACE threats, rather needing the FBI’s help or just issuing warnings/ preventative lockdowns.

I sell tech for a living and everyday I try to show parents how to utilize monitoring and age limits. It’s “too much work” for them, so they tell me to lie about the kids age, don’t put any restrictions, and just hands their CHILD the full internet…. Nice to see they're finally doing something about it. This may be news to some of you but it's last year's news to me. These kids know how to manipulate the school policies. And the school board will take the easiest path and expel one innocent student rather than discipline the group. It's a shame when a group of kids can decide they don't like another kid and tell key lies to get that kid expelled. And as a parent, all you can do is teach your kids that life is not fair and even though you don't need or want those kinda friends, you have to appease them or they may sabotage your education. I'm now, involuntarily, a stay at home Dad.

@@Forseti-the-drengr No. When somebody makes threats they should just be kicked out of the school. I think arresting them may be a bit too harsh. Perhaps there are alternatives besides criminal charges and detention in a cell. Make sense? Perhaps fines or requiring them to make a public apology or combination of both is better. I’m just saying that throwing people in a jail cell is something we are too quick to do. There is a massive problem with it and over 70% of americans support criminal justice reform. I believe that there are alternatives besides measures that seem purely punitive. It’s literally inhumane to throw people in a cell, make sense? One year in jail is quite extreme for words, not actions. Okay? This is reminiscent of licking people up for blasphemy and heresey, not so much the same context but the same quickness to just jump to max punishment for words. Okay? Threats are in a different context, I get that. I’m saying this… If you took every man of woman worldwide that is detained or in prison at all whatsoever, 1/4 of them are in the USA. 80%+ of those women who are in jails/prisons are mothers. You need to understand these are kids, and taking a child away from their mother is something that should be avoided at all costs, for the sake of the mother, out of respect to the mother that’s a last resort. This is ridiculous the wuickness to which americans are to lock people in a cell, despite the fact that the biggest Detention center in TN is privately ran and it’s only staffed 40% of what’s needed and there are several civil rights suits and have been 60+ cases of sexual assault by guards on inmates in the last two years. It’s extreme, you’re imagining the perfect jail and you’re wanting to tear away a child’s entire future over words. There are other ways. It’s irrational and extreme. You remind of the people cheering in the coliseum for the gladiators to keep fighting with that mentality. Punitive measures should be on the back burner, IE punishment, the rest should be restitution and reformation. There are no victims in this case, it is threats. Being investigated and scared by the police is oftentimes enough of a deterrent. Don’t let what happened in Georgia fool you. Georgia state representatives all made it to congress by campaigning off the fact that they hand all their children 6-14 years old assault rifles and pistols and shotguns to all hold together in a family picture. The father gets punished for handing his kid a gun, okay what about the representatives that posed family pictures with little girls and boys with assault rifles?

They need to ban social media and band cellphones in the classroom. The biggest problem is nobody is raising their kids now they're giving them cellphones and computers to baby sit them. Give them chores an responsibilities to do and when they do it well Give them a little reward and when they mess up bust they're ass and take rewards from them. Raise your kids or don't have any. That's the worst child abuse there is, is to not Raise your child an setting them up to fail they're whole life.

Parents are always making excuses for their kids, joking about things that are not funny, protecting them from consequences, blaming everyone else....this is entirely the parents fault. A sheriff in Florida posted an unblurred picture of an
11 year old making threats and showing weapons. Excellent.
We need to show their faces and their parent's faces. Stop "protecting" their identities and start protecting the community. Start doing perp walks. They will understand then. Asian counties do. Kids behave better because they know the public consequences.
