The fact that the trooper passed away from a heart attack after showing no compassion for someone suffering the same fate is dramatic irony in it's purest form.

Also, as most ambulances travel with only two EMTs, the one behind the wheel and the one treating Pt., the supervising EMT should not have exited the ambulance along with the driver leaving the Pt. alone in the ambulance.
EMT and Firefighter here. Something to mention is that as a member of EMS our #1 priority is ALWAYS what's best for the patient. One of our jobs is to be our patient's advocate. Mr. White keeping the patient as #1 priority was excellent.
You guys are the shit. I had a psychotic break and almost ended up in prison but you guys took me instead. The cops wanted me, but you guys took me insisted. Phew
Give your EMTs and Paramedics some love. They have to deal with so much and are often thought of last in terms of Public shows of appreciation and funding.
Not by me - as a disabled vet - they are the only public servants I have ANY respect for. EMT, Paramedics, and firefighter are the only one that actually serve the community.
To be fair this was in 2009…. Lot of you need to pay attention to the date. Hasn’t happened in this manner again, obviously there was some sort of meeting within the department after this. Plus, the cop is dead. Lot of the issues you can trace back to the chief, with how they dictate other officers with how their department and city will be ran.
Yeah. Behavior that should have landed the cop in prison only resulted in the " severe discipline" of a five day suspension and a visit to a department psychiatrist.
This is true. But, the driver of the ambulance was wrong for not having the vehicles emergency lights on. That in itself would have precluded the idiot decision from the Trooper.
@@TeamDoc312 man, don't pull that. I'm all for law and order but we as humans, with functional brains and a capacity to reason, understand why laws are set the way they are, because they work. If they didn't work, we would get rid of them. In this instance, if these paramedics come to the realization that the lights are agitating the condition of the patient, it should be fully within law and if not in law, allowed to continue as we are humans. There is no arbitrary pen and ink in our lives dictating our every move, some people make mistakes, what were the consequences of the mistake for no lights? Absolutely braindead.
@@TeamDoc312 It was stated that with cardiac patients it was protocol not to run with the siren. If they have the capability they should have just ran with lights or 4 way flashers or something.
The cop, ultimately was wrong, but to be fair, at the time of the driving encounter, the cop did not know there was an emergency with a patient onboard. It was his ego that started the situation to spiral out of control. He was "offended" that the ambulance did not yield, although I don't understand why he didn't just drive around. There was no oncoming traffic. However, once he heard the driver saying that he had a patient onboard, on the way to the hospital, he should have immediately served as an escort. This was about him.
The dept. wouldn't so the Almighty did... 9 years later. that should humble us all if we think we've gotten away with something evil for a long time. in this life or the next, no one will escape ultimate justice. Seek forgiveness in the Name of Jesus Christ people, and humble ourselves as that trooper evidently couldn't
You are exactly correct! Prohibiting a public servant from doing their job with disregard for human life should always be against the law. Point blank period!
it is. The cop should have been fired and charged. Now they would say he reacted to the paramedic getting into his face but still, the end doesn't really justify the means.
Nobody will see this comment but Maurice White is an amazing human being. Asked others not to get involved, stood up for his driver, refused to back down against several abusive cops in the name of someone’s life. He is a beautiful man.
Yes, I definitely noticed all of that! Much respect to him. I bet he still continued to work after winning that lawsuit. When you love what you do, it's not a job. It's just basically living in your purpose.
More reasonable to think the ambulance has more priority than police car. When you see ambulance with lights and racing through traffic, you should assume there’s a patient on board.
These troopers were carrying a racist attitude towards EMS Mr. White and the black family of patient. This was truly absurd. Troopers let their “racist egos” get in the way of being professional.
I’m a healthcare provider (anesthesia) and anyone who hinders an ambulance with a patient en route is guilty of attempted murder. Time means LIFE!!! If the officer thought that the ambulance personnel broke the law, they needed to follow the ambulance to the hospital and THEN make his illegal arrest. Unbelievable…just simply unbelievable.
Even if the patient survives, the delay can cause permanent structural damage to the heart, if pulse ox drops too much brain damage can happen, there’s risk of hypertensive crisis which can cause stroke or brain aneurysm, it’s not something to play with!! Thank you for what you do, we need more people like you. ❤
I whole heartedly agree. In trauma surgery we say "Time is Tissue." There is a short window with which to save tissue. How fast one is able to get surgical intervention could mean a difference between you still being able to live independently versus you needing 24 hour assistance with daily living or perhaps even being hook to a ventilator to keep you breathing.
I have to add this comment, because seeing a man who has professionally dedicated his life to saving the lives of others being choked for the simple act of trying to save a life and disregarding the feelings of an officer has a shaking with anger. How is this tolerable in this society? Why do we let this happen and to only give 5 days off to the officer? It is such an insult.
The Trooper was simply not listening. There was NO RESPECT for a fellow emergency professional. Such unprofessional conduct should have got him the sack.
Its actually coincidental. Situational irony here would be if he got the ambulance driver he'd tried to ticket as his driver and the officer died en route due to delays because of the drivers refusal to go through intersections without yielding. The opposite of what you would expect from an ambulance. But colloquially AKA the way everyone uses irony, yea youre right lol. Technically though, if the patient in the ambulance passed away due to the delay, THAT is peak irony considering one would expect the fastest/safest route to the hospital to be the ambulance. The officer passing away from the same thing the patient he inconvenienced was going through is coincidental or karmic.
Irony? Or God's way of Balancing out The Karmic consequence of that Police Officer (Martin)INTERRUPTING the AMBULANCE getting their cardiac-prone EMERGENCY Patient to the Hospital ASAP?!?!

Most Oklahoma troopers have very little respect for the civilians. They only chose to operate under the "color" of law and because they are the omnipotent emd all to be all God's with supreme authority. I mean tbf, the cop couldn't have reasonably known that the ambulance was transporting a patient so stopping the ambulance is completely reasonable imo. But everything that happened after that was just awful. The moment he got informed that they were transporting a patient to the hospital, he should've let them go.
The second officer was great. Seems rare to see nowadays. Of course, officers can't know every single law (many lawyers have to research sometimes) but to admit you don't know and then to follow up and self-educate on the subject is definitely refreshing! Glad you posted that one!
Pulling over an ambulance is truly wild. The second that cop realized they have a patient, and they don’t have lights and sirens on in order to keep the patient calm, he should’ve said “oh okay, sorry for the confusion. I’ll let you get back to your elderly patient”.
The trooper wasn't even delayed by the ambulance, he didn't even need to get to where he was going and didn't need to stop the ambulance. The ambulance should have never stopped.
@@jasonlacroix6083 You can be dead right. The driver didn't know what the full situation was, so that was probably the safest option for everyone onboard including the patient.

Exactly and even the EMTs told him to let them get to the hospital and then he can arrest them for all they care. What’s clear to me is he knew he was going to be arrested despite not doing anything but he resisted because he knew it was essential to get the patient to the hospital first. To me, he didn’t seem afraid of the consequences as much as he was worried about his patient which goes to show how good of a man he was, put others first.
Who is doing the hiring of these mentally impaired officers, who is trraining the people who do the hiring? Who is approving this broken hiring process?
The cop, only on the job less than two years at the time, was given a five-day unpaid rip for this. Only six months later, he was again investigated for beating a black man with his nightstick. Then five years later in 2014, now no longer on the road, he was assigned to a "teenager academy" for high schoolers interested in policing. He was removed from that task and again investigated for showing "innapptopriate photos" to people. He died in 2018 after a heart attack at age 46.
@daisy1686 I think it's pretty obvious that as a result of the most recent incident, and his prior work history, including the incidents we're aware of, and many others we're not, that he was terminated from his employment. Like many men in his position, the stress, the humiliation, the feeling of helplessness, were all too much handle, and so one day, for lunch, he had a 357 Magnum, on rye. For the sake of the family, and themselves, they told the public he had a "heart attack". This is often done in circumstances like this.
Retired paramedic here. We often had to run through a small town to get to one of the hospitals. There was a cop known for stopping ambulances. My turn rolled around one night when transporting a critical patient. When he got behind us with lights and siren while we were running hot, I called 911 and told dispatcher what was happening. Told her to contact that cop and tell him i was not stopping and would not put my patient at risk. That the cop could follow me to the hospital and give me a ticket, arrest me, or whatever he wanted to do. They must have advised him to rethink the situation because he never showed up at the hospital.
Firefighter/EMT here. I don't know about Oklahoma, but in Florida the laws regarding emergency vehicles, lights and sirens, etc., the laws generally give law enforcement ultimate authority. For instance, emergency vehicles may stop or stand anywhere regardless of traffic regulations UNLESS otherwise directed by a law enforcement officer. Virtually all the codes include a phrase that makes an LEO the ultimate arbiter in these situations. HOWEVER, there is one big exception. NOBODY can interfere with emergency medical personnel who are rendering care to a patient. NOBODY. Not LEO, not the fire chief, not the governor. Treatment of the patient comes above everything else.
Yeah, I'd like to see them tell me to move. I'm a Professional Surveyor and Mapper in the State of Florida. Under State Law, not even a LEO has the authority to tell me to move, if I'm in the process of performing a survey. Only the Federal Government has the authority to revoke or deny my access to a jobsite or any adjoining properties, including any intersecting or abutting right-of-ways. I've personally taken the badges of six officers who overstepped their authority, and I'm itching to get number seven.
So basically everything you said is pointless because they are rendering care to a patient but the LEO took things too far due to an ego. I would have kept driving to the hospital or, if possible, radio in what is happening. EMS has a emergency situation, the trooper was just being a jackass. That's the facts and should of been fired.
That's how it is for us here in Oklahoma, if patient care is being rendered we have 110% control over that scene. Law enforcement for the most part is pretty lenient for us here with apparatus placement in regards to safety. Although I will say the Highway Patrol puts a very strong emphasis on getting the highway back open but usually allow us to do what we need to do in a timely manner.
@@shayh.3556 What you said is was what was pointless here. OP clearly stated the lawful exception based by state, as in the cop would be out of line EVEN in Florida as well. Amazes me when the cop said "pull over to the side of the road when there's an emergency vehicle behind ya?" It wasn't met with "THIS IS and emergency vehicle sir." Or "The level of Emergency vehicles in descending order to most would be Fire, Ambulance, police."
I can't believe they put a woman's life in danger over this bullshit...if anything he should have helped him get her to the hospital....and it looks like karma is a bitch.
As a retired Paramedic, this medic who was transporting a patient was being as responsible and caring as you can get. There was family following to the hospital, not running lights and sien in this instance tells me he had his patient stable and he was being cautious with the family to ensure their safety as well. Kudos my brother we’ve all been there. That cop had no right to put his hands on you!
Agree 100%. My late sil & her husband were both paramedics. My sil suffered numerous bouts of breast cancer that returned multiple times. The chemo treatments eventually caused breathing problems among other issues & the cancer itself ravaged her body. My bil eventually earned his PA, which allowed him to better care for his wife. Many doctors, including my own, along with many others have said that he took such good care of his wife. He really did. Between the two of them, they saw a lot of cases like this throughout the many decades of their service.

Probably the same ambulance driver only thing is, he had a DOT mandated 30 min break. Sorry, but thems the rules, officer, I gotta follow the rules, right?
No doubt, right? I wonder, too, what was going thru his head when he was at his critical moment. If nothing else, how would you feel, "officer," if the medics who were supposed to be helping you, took their sweet time when you were lying there helpless and struggling, or didn't put you first as a patient in need, while the medics argued loudly for 10 mins over procedures or whose turn it was to drive? This entire incident is truly outrageous, and who doesn't see the fact that trooper Martin, himself, died of a heart attack, as a bit of kharmic irony. It does in a way, explain the explosive temper, which can and does happen to people with exceedingly high blood pressure issues. I could see your point and wondered the same thing when I saw your comment. How could a person, even someone without much of a conscience, not have the thought of their recent interaction they handled so poorly regarding someone else's urgent medical needs, and how likely would it be for the thought of karma to enter a person's mind while facing the same fate? It's kind of a natural response to wonder about, especially when anyone not directly involved can empathize with whoever was wrongly affected in this unnecessary situation and it's being so unjustly handled. Trooper Martin, is every citizen's worst nightmare, for obvious reasons, which are only made worse by the insulting fact he was minimally disciplined for what mostly anyone would see as something he should have been fired for. The incident was bad enough, let alone the hypocrisy of his lightweight reprimand while being such a petty and totally egotistical A-hole, and having so little control over himself to become such a stickler about principles he made worse, by his exaggeration of them. Cops that are that unstable need more than a paid week off as a consequence. If any other person had behaved that way, they would surely be given the "full penalty of the law". The hypocrisy and his lack of common decency is just totally messed up.
This brought tears to my eyes when the 2nd officer arrived and the family had to intervene. Why didn’t the 1st officer care about the patient and simply follow them to the hospital? This is craziness. I’m sure this put the patient under additional stress.

I was driving my wife to the emergency room at the hospital and a cop pulled me over. I yelled meet me at the hospital my wife's in a bad way. He replied just go on ahead. Now that's the way to do things. No ticket was issuued.
I was driving my buddy crazy fast and running red lights to get to him to the hospital when he was having a heart issue. I saw a cop sitting in a parking lot who had to have seen me run a red light. I drove straight up to the cop and asked "where's the hospital?" (I knew where it was). He pointed and I said "Thank you" and drove on. He seemed totally disinterested.
Yup. I was in the same situation twice. The second time, the cop even escorted me to the hospital, even though it was across the county line. He drove ahead and blocked intersections and everything. Sometimes they get it right 👍.

I think the initial delay was justified since the ambulance wasn't using lights or a siren. Everything that happened after the trooper was told they were transporting a patient was not.
Or make better. We all have situations that we (cops or not) have the ability to influence. You don't need a badge to be a d!ck. A mirror would prove that statement in your case. You also don't need a badge to be a good, caring person posting positive things on the internet.

Once the cop knew that a patient was in distress, he should have put on his emergency lights and cleared a path to the hospital. But instead, his ego took control. And when that happens, logic leaves.
Holy shit, that hand around the man's throat actually gave me chills. Imagine how many times his wife and other vulnerable are have been in that same position.
Another example of a cop abusing authority because their ego is more important than the health and safety of the public. This is your legacy Trooper Daniels.

The cop, ultimately was wrong, but to be fair, at the time of the driving encounter, the cop did not know there was an emergency with a patient onboard. Ego driven cops are dangerous.

I could see your point and wondered the same thing when I saw your comment. Cops that are that unstable need more than a paid week off as a consequence. If any other person had behaved that way, they would surely be given the "full penalty of the law". The hypocrisy and his lack of common decency is just totally messed up.

May I ask, are you black or white? How it should go and how it does go, are often not the same, especially if you are black.

Once the cop knew that a patient was in distress, he should have put on his emergency lights and cleared a path to the hospital. But instead, his ego took control. And when that happens, logic leaves.

The police in the U.S. take 6 months of the academy before they are on the force. That isn't enough time to learn all the laws, to see if you're psychological prepared for the job, and to learn every protocol there is.
Two same incidents happen at these two nations and was handled differently. A guy in the U.K. was wielding a machete and swinging it around. One cop held his attention while his partner snuck around and rolled a big trash can at him. Knocking him down and disarming him.
A homeless man was wielding a knife in NY and had 5 cops with guns trained on him. They all shot him for "fear of their lives".
See how each result was different from the time they had to train for the job?
