My dad passed a day ago. Last year he discovered this song, he was a huge music aficionado. It's easier to list what classic bands he did not see. The stones to Nirvana, He rarely found new music up to his par because "hes heard it all" but he found this beck song and urged me to hear it. Hed loop it all the time. He loved it and thought Beck was a genius. I'm laying in his bed unable to sleep playing this. I hope he can hear it. This is the only song that hasn't made me cry in 24 hours (and I just sobbed at Gagas new pop song for christ's sake). Thank you Beck.

Aw, well, Hyperspace I don't think went too well and I think quite a few great records came from 2012 and 2011 in the range I think this was posted. Haven't heard much from Beck, but from what I've heard, he's certainly intriguing as an artist. Rock on man, but do take time to acknowledge that 90% of music that has ever been released in any decade was either seen as ok or bad or was a big trend that died out. We only will remember the 10% that stand the test of time. Pretty soon, I kinda wonder if my generation will do this to the next one. Come to think of it, from some comments on music and other bits of culture my generation grew up in, I think it's already starting to happen and it's a little saddening. Heck, sometimes even I catch myself doing it.

I hear ya. I listened to this disc on DVD-A nearly everyday for about a year straight because I was so down. It always felt like I'm not alone in my feelings when hearing it. Like someone else understands me.
I honestly believe this is the greatest piece of art I've ever known. There's millions of great pieces of art of course, but to me, this one stands alone in its brilliance.
A lot of comments btw use the word "magical". I believe it's more magical then most understand. I believe this music really is magic....It seems to have a power all to itself that effects others on a very deep level.
      Just beautiful.

Put your hands on the wheel
    Let the golden age begin
    Let the window down
Feel the moonlight on your skin
    Let the desert wind
    Cool your aching head
Let the weight of the world
    Drift away instead
These day I barely get by
    I don't even try
    It's a treacherous road
    With a desolated view
    There's distant lights
But here they're far and few
    And the sun don't shine
    Even when its day
    You gotta drive all night
Just to feel like you're ok
These days I barely get by
    I don't even try

I have never heard an artist like Beck. He can play music that goes from rap to country(both of which I dislike), and do it well. I got into his music after hearing "Lost Cause", that I first thought was Mark Knopfler. He sounds like so many other great artists, while his own talent and creativity shines through. If I had only 2 cd's that I could listen to forever, Sea Change and Morning Phase would be the 2. And Darkside of the moon. lol

And while Beck produced Morning Phase himself, he borrowed heavily from Nigel Godrich's bag of tricks. I've wondered what Nigel thought about that. Beck should have at least given him some credit for the influence.

Since the dawn of MTV--not that anyone can or should care about that nonsense outlet anymore--music has forever morphed into a shallow beauty contest. Since then it has been all looks over chops, all bling and dancing over songwriting. Beck is one of the VERY few who has been able to sell records, win Grammies AND remain credible. This is a profoundly gorgeous song from a uniformly stunning album.

    • @bossacanada
      @bossacanada 10 років тому +4

I agree that 'Beck is one of the VERY few who has been able to sell records, win Grammies AND remain credible' But I don't agree with your comment about music being shallow since the dawn of MTV. There's a stupendous amount of really good music out there. It's not necessarily Top 40...or Grammy worthy (besides the Grammies are not and have never been about quality music, it's always been about sales)

Beck is great, but underrated? That's just not true. If anything, some of his albums are OVERrated - see: Morning phase, Sea Change - if anything by him is underrated, it's his pre-Mellow Gold work. But his best albums (Midnite Vultures, Mellow Gold, and Guero) are *immensely* popular.
