  • Once upon a time there was a game called Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled. a great game with an absolutely ruinous flaw. There was also once a man who made some bacon, and that man is now celebrating the one year anniversary of his channel. He just so happened to be making a video about Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled at the time, so he presents to you the video that wasn't intended to be the anniversary video, but ended up being anyway. This man would also like to stop speaking in the third person and go to bed. So for your viewing pleasure, your favorite three litter acronym starting with T's take on something that everyone stopped caring about years ago.

Fun fact, despite not intending to be, this ended up being the one-year anniversary video for this channel. It was on this day one year ago that my first video was released, and it's been a wild ride ever since. I'll post more about it later.
Also for the record, I didn't blank out my PSN name because I have anything to hide, I just don't want to deal with 30 friend requests. I'll admit that it's a three word name, and the first word of that name is "drunk".

talking about late to the party, here im writing 1 month later... to be frank i see it fine that to unlock EVERYTHING in ctr only takes a week maybe 2 and before you kill me for defending mtx let me point at gran turismo 7 where the cars can cost up to 20 millions and the pay per race makes so you have to keep racing for at least ONE ENTIRE DAY JUST FOR ONE CAR after looking at that, wasting a week for cosmetics isnt so bad, and now you may kill me for using the ''is only cosmetics'' defence

I personally played a ton of this game back in 2019 when it released and I was able to have a ton of fun without spending a dime extra on it. However, I totally respect and understand the concerns you have about microtransactions. I bought the game at launch before microtransactions were a thing in it, otherwise I would have bought it used to avoid supporting microtransactions. I think your concerns here are very valid. Gamers should never support shady practices like microtransactions. It's not worth what it does to the industry.

I agree. In call of duty some people say that maps shouldn't be free so more effort can be put into dlc. I disagree because going back to that map model might set a dangerous precedent for developers and publishers. For me, I always saw different call of duty games as their own seperate map pack. If you want one or two extra maps, you might as well just play a new or past version of call of duty and use that money for something else.

Quite a few of the issues the UA-camr is having mainly come down to being late to the game. We didn’t have an insurmountable amount of items in the store since there was only a limited amount of stuff in the store to begin with, and a number of players were clearing the store out as content released. Just looking at characters when the first GP released there were less than 10 CTR characters buyable, and the four trophy girls. Now there’s something like 35. The chances of the character you wanted appearing in the store was much better, and there was less to buy so I personally was more inclined to just buy everyone. Same with skins, only a handful of characters even had legendary skins etc.
Now it’s overwhelming to try and find the one or two things you want out of a massive pile of everything that’s ever been released, compared to those of us who significantly thinned that out by buying a lot of stuff as it came out.

As someone with 150 hours and earned a champion kart during the Spyro grand prix, me and my friends didn't have a bad time with the wumpa coins BUT there were a few reasons for that:
    1. We played when the game was live. Servers still had their problems, but finding games didn't take long.
    2. We played daily, especially during the Spyro grand prix. If you wanted a champion kart, you had to be in the top 5% on the global leaderboard. So we were making the most of wumpa time every day, including weekends during the 2x bonus.
    3. We were good. The amount of coins you got was based on your position; 1st got 100%, 2nd got 90%, 3rd got 85%, and anyone else got 75%. We were typically always in the top 3, and would back out to find a different lobby if we were getting beaten badly.
    4. We knew what tracks gave the most coins. Different tracks gave different amount of coins, the highest being Electron Avenue at 80 and lowest being Jungle Boogie at 30. We essentially memorized what tracks were at least around 60 and picked those during voting, but avoided Tiny Arena; despite it being around 70 coins, it was too long compared to the other tracks so it wasted wumpa time. In the end we started doing "warm up" private races before going online, which mainly consisted of playing Hot Air Skyway, Out of Time, Electron Avenue, etc as they were high coin tracks.
    5. And lastly, there was less in the shop. They added new content every month, so there wasn't as much for us to cycle through as there is now. We also played so much, one of my friends had enough coins to buy everything they released in the last month straight away. He now has over 200k coins, with nothing left in the shop.
Anyway, that was our experience. Hope that was insightful!

It wasn't hard to have enough coins when the game was active. I obtained everything in the game. All skins, all karts, all promo stuff, sourpatch, xfinity, etc. You can still earn plenty of coins offline too just doing GP races but it does end up being a grind now I'm sure.

I used to play this game heavily during 2019. Yeah the grind for the Wumpa coins were definitely a massive grind. Especially with all of the content they've added into the game.
And through out those days I've been playing the game I didn't buy a single of those microtransactions. I just kept playing the game and I did the weekend bonus more often to get the new stuff easier.
The Grand Prix did add something to the gameplay that keep you playing, I remember the grand prix does reward you with free characters, skins and cosmetics.

Not to mention, when they brought in microtransactions- the prices for everything went drastically up. Before the fact, it was feasible to earn stuff with effort as it was initially designed that way.

Still remembering the Weird Science bundle atrocity.
First off that damn thing was 11,000 coins, but there was a "generous discount" to put it down to 9,900. Then, this highlights that the only Wumpa Coin package you can buy to get it immediately costs nearly $15.00 USD. This package also happened to give you the same amount of coins as the bundle was worth, meaning they were saying this pack was worth $15.00 USD initially
Then when you do the math you realize that the bundle is itself hideously overpriced to start with, because even if you count the hovercar as having the same price as legendary wheels attached like the XP bonuses for GPs do, the value of the pack is only around 7,000 coins.

It’s interesting to see this from the perspective of someone who’s literally late to the party and missed all the Grand Prix content.
I will say that having played at the time, your issues around being unable to buy what you wanted from the store was much less of a problem back when the Grand Prix and content was being added monthly than it is now. Just in terms of characters when the game dropped initially there were only the handful of CNK characters, then the Trophy Girls got added with the first GP to unlock something like 13 characters with coins. Playing daily (and online) you could easily earn enough to earn a character or two daily, and nobody had any trouble getting into an online lobby. If you were going to try and finish the Grand Prix bar (I think it was the nitro bar?) then you’d probably be playing daily anyway, and by the end of the GP you’d have plenty of coins spare for the next Grand Prix and so on.
The other thing was only a handful of skins and other things would be added each month, what happened when they did the final update was they also threw in a bunch of colour changes for existing skins which added to the skin pool making it difficult to find what you wanted to.

9:23 It's based on how much time you spend in the race itself. So menus and loading screens don't count.
Also I've been playing this game since day one and no, they did not decrease the Wumpa coins payouts. But they did tweak it so that you earn more from longer or more difficult tracks and less from shorter/easier ones

Gacha. Just ask Genshin fans. It's mainly done for two things, 1) to drive up retention (grind) 2) "encourage" you to buy Wumpa coins. I myself never found it "intrusive" as I played the game during it's seasons and they were VERY giving with the multipliers during certain events and days. I think had you actually spent time in it during it's run you might have had a less negative opinion. Although the Gacha style shop yeah they could've done away with it as it's a common F2P tactic.

Big difference there is that Genshin is free. While CTR, is 40 DOLLARS console exclusive.
The game already made thier money the moment I purchased the game. It shouldn't be asking for more money after I made the initial purchase, which wasn't even that cheap.
Microtransactions only belongs in F2P games. It has no place elsewhere.

As someone who played from release to just after the microtransactions, there's a few things that have been fixed that you mention being in the game. In the past, you couldn't reroll the shop, golden wumpa fruit wasn't a thing and I'm like 90% sure the prices were inflated to reflect the microtransactions being introduced. I also don't remember characters always popping up when you bought the previous one, pretty certain I'd gwt a character, go to buy another and it ended up being wheels.

Anyway I grinded this game on all 3 platforms simultaneously in 2019-20 when the game was live and it was awesome. But the game kind-of started to fall off during the October '19 Nina's nightmare grand prix as that patch introduced SBMM(skill based match making) instead of using ping based that was used beforehand. It made it so that now even if there are a large number of players online, If there's no one around your skill level (enough players to start a race)you wont enter a match. I love this game and would love to play it online but its hard to find players for a full race especially on Switch or Xbox. Wish this game had dedicated servers

Kirby Star Allies, no matter what many said, will always be the go-to game showing that fanservice for free sells a lot.

I really dont think the micro transactions are bad like you say they are. For a couple lf reasons
    1. Its cosmetic its not pay to win
    2. It just a option nothing is locked behind a paywall
    3. You can just earn everything normally. Golden wumpa fruit 200+ at the end of the race for every six races plus coins doubled during the weekend offline. Online also adds a 5x mutplier for the first hour. It might take a while but if you just casually play the game and do a little grinding here and there you will unlock everything.
Without internet and wumpa coins you get
20 characters with new ones being added that were not in the original
All previous tracks plus all nitro kart tracks and some new created tracks for this game
Kart customization which was not in the original

Turned on the game, went to crystal challenge on hard with Nitro Lab and just let the X button be spammed over seconds. (55 seconds for each round, +- 10 secs loading times)
Over time I bought the whole game clean while doing something else and/or sleeping. Sometimes an update came restarting the game, returning with Crash Bandicoot dry humping his kart to Oxide's ship.

I've got a story to tell with this one....
Back in 2019, I had a youtube channel of my own. (I had no subscribers, but that's beside the point.) This game had the cosmic coincidence of releasing on my birthday -- and it was the game I was most looking forward to at the time, because CTR is the greatest racing game ever made.
So I pre-ordered the game with my birthday money. I got it installed, had a blast playing it, and released my review of it in July. I made sure to specifically mention that there were no microtransactions (and there were none at that point).
But then, in the middle of the summer, Activision placed MTs in the game. All the reviews -- including mine -- had mentioned that the game DOESN'T have them...and then, out of nowhere, it did. I felt betrayed.
In fairness, we really should have seen this coming. They did it with Black Ops 4, so this isn't unheard of for Activision.
2019 was the worst year of my life up to that point, and this didn't help.

  • @jam9852
    @jam9852 10 місяців тому

Yeah the game was ruined for me because you were forced to play online to get more wumpa coins during new Grand Prix which meant tons of grinding just to unlock all the characters vehicles paint jobs And most costumes I gave up after I unlocked most of it all as I don't care about stickers or tires that much.
My expirence offline I had to at least play for 5 or 6 hours on either all the cups or choose tiny arena over and over again just to unlock one character or vehicle I know the best way is to play electronic avanue but I freaking hate that remade track. it also urks me how battle mode and the story adventure mode gives you hardly any Wumpa coins or new characters which would be better than crappy stickers and random paint jobs.
I feel my complaints are valid when The story mode gem cups and relics could have given us the most wanted unlockable characters instead like
    Brio
    Komodo moe
    Koala kong
    Tawna
    Baby T
    Lab assistant
    Spyro
    Real Emperor Velo
Which would have been a nice surprise over absolute crap rewards the gem cups gave you it would have also made Grand Prixs less annoying as adding in already wanted characters as fair unlockables would have made the Grand Prixs shorter.
Yeah I didn't spend any real money and I still felt like I accomplished nothing after I've unlocked what I wanted for the day if anything I was pi**ed off because I realised I had to grind for what I wanted the next day and so on and so forth
This is why I still love the original Crash Team Racing on the PS1 more the original CTR is not a punishing grind fest it's short and sweet and does the job just fine despite its lack of content its way more consumer friendly and I'd still argue its holded up way better than Mario Kart 64.
Another complaint I have for this game not brought up much is that their is no way to turn off all of the extra costumes of the CPU characters I get why Activision did this though they are throwing extra random skins paint jobs vehicles and stickers just so most people can get tempted to spend real money to try to unlock what they see which is Frigging Scummy to say the least.
Also yaya panda for this game was on my requested character list alongside evil crash , the crash suit guy from the old CTR commercials & bianca from spyro also mr crumb would have been way better than the iron checkpoint crate especially should have been added in the spooky grand prix alongside evil crash and lab assistant and I was surprised we didn't get bearminator the most memorable thing about crash bash we could at least have got a cameo role & the spyro Grand Prix should have included his actual friends over the villians lol
I'm hoping that Microsoft fixes Crash and Spyros future no more crappy games like Crash team rumble & I'm really hoping that more thought gets put into the future games as Crash 4 was the absolute worst though most likely Crash & Spyro are a after thought and Microsoft bought Activision for Call of Duty to replace their Halo flagship franchise.

Some of us already knew that the Mobile game models like microtransaction was a colossal facepalm to be on a real video game platform in the first place, but sadly in the end it is what it was since gaming companies only cared about money of course and printing more games than their userbase's feedback. Even tho gamers do tend to being hypocrite typically, right?
For those who don't know or never heard of it: Microtransaction generally was basically an evil version of DLC, where you can buy them to load up some currency out of real money so you can buy more stuffs from the item shop without have to play more game first. Yes indeed, it had LOTS and lots of way of how microtransaction work and so do devs or publishers come up with the idea to approach the monetization system, F2P games doesn't really need an introduction either, and its a complete total anti-engagement than letting yourselves laze out through capitalist way unlike DLC where you can buy them and get some fresh optional contents that you would excited to see what inside from what you have just brought despite its not really important to the core part of the game at all
Im admittedly no expert on explaining (and so do everybody else honestly), but thats all I can tell from what I know and guess about whats going on

CTR:NF was amazing outside of the MTX that snuck in late. However, the game and all of its content could be earned relatively easily without ever spending a penny and wasn't even that much of a grind. Does that make it O.K.? Absolutely fucking not... However, the game was too short lived and most of the content can no longer be obtained. That being said, with the current release of Chocobo GP... 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 CTR:NF looked pretty clean. It would have been a GOTY for me if it didn't end up with MTX in the end. As far as I remember they adjusted the wumpa coins but it wasn't necessarily to decrease them, it made longer tracks worth more to add incentive to playing them. So basically they just balanced the game so something like Tiny Arena would be worth racing rather than dipping out for something like Coco Park. Wumpa Time was like 30 minutes or 1 hour of race time or something weird like that. So you might have played for a few hours but probably didn't race for that long.

    • @TBP
      @TBP  Рік тому +7

285 hours is objectively a long time. Especially to someone who has a job, friends, a workout regimen to maintain, and so on. Someone who only has a couple hours a day to play games. To that person 12 days of play time is a little much. There is no debate here, you can't downplay this.

@@TBP i can, i do all of those things except work out. 285 aint shit. its a game, you dont have to do it. BUT i bet the grind would be no where near as long if there wasnt a way to pay for it. also thats 285 to unlock everything. imagine trying to 100% other games, it would take twice as long. i only had about 2-4 hours to game (given the day) and still ended up with 100s of hours in most of the games i like, not because i was trying to unlock everything im not even close, but just because i like playing the game.
the way you unlock things in ctr is predatory af tho, that design is ment to induce fomo. i agree with most of what you said in this vid, but that 285 hours...nah i dont agree with that. if its a game i like 285 hours is nothing.

In my particular case, the woman coins aren't a big deal.
But I'm a very particular case. I'm good at this game. So I can go online and actually win races and make more coinage.
But I agree. The game wants you to spend more $$$ to get more wumpa coins.

Crash 4 didn't escape the MTXs out of any kind of mercy. They were going to patch in a multiplayer mode (originally called "Wumpa League") but that got retooled into "Crash Team Rumble" after Crash 4 failed to sell. It was going to be monetizable skins.

It's sad that many devs still haven't out live service games yet, because they can work rather well. The two biggest examples being Splatoon and No Man's Sky, both giving players lots of free content, with Splatoon only charging cash for their Octo Expansion after three years of near nonstop content updates. No Man Sky just blasts fans with free updates constantly and I respect Hello Games for that. Live service like this came work, but not with microtransactions.

I really would've liked it if they had just had traditional unlocks for everything over doing this ingame shop thing like how the original game just had you unlocking characters through the Gem cups. The grand prix stuff was fine (if a little grindy) but this game has so much to do that it's always frustrating to me how we couldn't just get unlocks from playing and beating various challenges and modes throughout the game. CTR's probably my favorite kart racing game so it's a bit sad that it came to this in the end, had the game not been muddled by corporate greed I feel like it would've been an overall even greater game by the end.
Also, I really wish this game had a way to carry over saves since getting a lot of the grand prix stuff after those have ended is really crap so when I switched over to a different console to play on I was already dreading trying to get the spyro grand prix stuff again.

i gave up, i can only unlock the characters from the story, the umbrella girls characters, the girls characters and the babies characters, this remake game let me down. There are no cheat codes for N.Trophy, all characters have to go through a grinding process, only GT Kart customization which I worked so hard to get. Costumes, stickers, paint I passed. I grinded on Roo's Tube, tracks that I originally liked on PS1 now I'm so sick of them thanks to the grinding process. And thanks also to the microtransactions that make the game take so long to load races because the game has to load the costumes of the characters first. I raced for grinding on Roo's Tube in about 1 minute 20 seconds and loading Singel Race on my PS4 Slim in about 40 seconds (for cosmetics where even the Online feature is dying). for players who have tasted the golden era of the fifth generation unlocking all locked items is mandatory, so I haven't even touched CTRNF for a year

The day people get angry at these big companies is the day a change happens and we force them to actually try harder with their games or we don't buy a single thing lol (I know it's not gonna happen, but it's fun to think of).

Now Gran Turismo 7's doing the same shit, except now it costs $70. But GT fans will continue to kiss the game's ass just because it says Gran Turismo on the box. I honestly feel that gamers today have zero spine, zero principles, they get super attached to products and will blindly defend them no matter how bad their games run, or how scummy their business practices are.

I am a die hard fan of the original playstation version, i played it to death. I recently picked up a nintendo switch to play some of it's fantastic exlusives as i'm now mostly a PC gamer and since we're never going to get a PC release i picked up nitro fueled. I thought i would love it but i just feel incredibly disappointed, the microtransactions are god awful, locking so many characters behind this stupid unlock system while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has a massive roster of characters unlocked at the start is seriously annoying. I'm really not a fan of the custom skins effecting the custom races either. Some of the cosmetics are down right ugly especially the recoloured skins the ai love to use. The game running at 30fps is also disappointing considering Mario Kart 8 Deluxe runs at 60fps and out puts at 1080p. I'd rather just go back to playing the original game through emulation than having to deal with the crap pitstop system.
A really dedicated team is currently working on porting the original 1999 game to PC so i'm much looking forward to that than playing any more of this.

I bought the game at launch, had a great time with it, easily playing 40 hours or so and even endured the initial MTX, but then they jacked up the prices of almost everything. That was when I sold my copy of the game. And looking at what you get from online play nowadays they even lowered the amount of coins you'd normally get. It was - if memory serves me right - around 200-500 per race, depending on your place and objectives, for me usually hovering around 300 per race. Mind you that was before most items in the store went up in price by 40-50%. And that was the base rate, there were no multipliers like a weekend bonus or something like that. That is just another way to strong-arm players into playing.

It was a hidden character made as an injoke by the programmer. The inclusion was based around the creation of Reptile in the first game, with Ed Boon wanting to have another urban myth to intrigue people. He let the existence circulate as a rumor for months before it was discovered. Which he could do because he was the sole programmer. The name was chosen specifically to get a rise out of John Tobias when it was discovered. There's more to this story (and I'm editorializing slightly), but a character being included as one giant injoke and the bizarre nature of the inclusion is why I think the two characters are comparable.
