    I learn and/or hear something in every one of your videos I watch. This was a really great explanation of how silly it is to give importance to perfection. Goodbye pencil and eraser!!👏

      Great to hear! But remember, the first few drawings are the hardest - psychologically. After that, the freedom kicks in. Be strong!😆. All the best with it. 😀

    great advice Stephen :) I've seen many artists who draw straight away with ink and they do many little thumbnails first if the drawing is from imagination just to clear some things us :).
    hope my English is good.

    You're a very lucid, self-aware guy! You've observed universal qualities of human tendencies that reach beyond artistic ability and can be applied to playing music, cooking, and so many other activities.

      What a kind and generous comment. Yes, a lot of ways of thinking are common to whatever we are doing 😀

    I went straight for the pen today, no eraser. Wow, it worked out, well I must admit it was a landscape. Thanks for the encouragement.

    Great advice Stephen, its so liberating doing pen only. When i rekindled my art just over a year ago, i ditched the pencil/eraser stage. Now i am doing commission work again, I'm using them again, but that's for reliability and practicality. However, pencil/eraser has sneaked back into my urban sketching for myself, and things are tightening back up and unhealthy perfectionism is creeping in. However, I find continuous line (pen only) loosens things right up, and I actually like the results. I think for me there's a time for pencil outlining (commissions) but that urban sketching could be an opportunity to free things up and skip that stage. Thank you for describing the mindset and covering this subject so well 😊🙏

      Haha. There’s a story I can relate to. So much happens in our minds that we need to train as much as any technical drawing skills. Sounds like the awareness you have now will keep on whatever path you want to be on. Have fun. 😀

    You make a lot of sense and hopefully I will live long enough to have the confidence to draw the drawing in ink. Right now I have my pencil in my right hand and my eraser in my left.

    Since I draw (almost always) digitally, unfortunately I have to resist the temptation. Fortunately a lot of what I like about drawing is sticking with the original lines I've laid down...I like to push them through and tie them into my drawing (there's something a little different for me, that I frequently like, about the 'first impression' marks). In fact in the first couple of years it was hard not to be slavish to them even if they were off. I have plenty of drawings that don't work out because I stick with my original game plan til the bitter end. :O :)

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  2 місяці тому +1

      Yes, I’m afraid my lack of digital experience makes me quite oblivious to the implications of what I say towards it. But it sounds like you’ve worked out what works for you. And that’s a big advantage 😀

      @@stephentraversart I'll note that if you are ever interested in seeing what you can do with digital art (which, to be clear, I do not expect :)), you could get yourself with something like an iPad or Galaxy tab s8 - you'd have all the freedoms as with sketchbook and pen (WHILE YOU ARE DRAWING - I will admit that actually manipulating the software is the normally minor hassle associated with any computer and its applications). They do need charging at the.of the day and the learning curve for software sucks a bit but I think you would be surprised at how much the experience can be the same. A few of the artists I follow like to create their work in traditional media and then scan it in and work with it digitally afterwards. Probably not your cup of tea but I thought I would mention it since it seems to be a common way to bridge worlds.

      Finding ways to take the pressure of expectations off ourselves and enjoying the process instead is a great way to discover the love again. Try just drawing parts of a scene, or particular objects, so there’s no temptation to think ‘artwork’, and just have fun. All the best with it. 😀

    Hi Stephen, I'd like to thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise! I've always loved sketching but never found the medium, I guess which I naturally gravitated to, until I found your channel. Since I've been watching your videos I've learnt so much, your simple explanations on lines, hatching and form are just transformative. And I even tried my first gum tree today using your technique and was really happy with it! One thing I really struggle with is doing circles which are in proportion (like for windows or big doors), do you have any tips?? I'd love to draw a Bag End drawing for a christmas present for a friend at the end of the year! This video is great by the way, I was almost paralysed using pencil but it was only with ink I actually started getting confident :)

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  2 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for sharing. Sometimes I visualise and draw each quarter of the circle separately. Rotating the paper so the most comfortable direction is always being used also helps a lot. A great subject for you. 😀

    I would love to take your course, but not sure if it is ok for newbies. I needs a sequential learning process. It is difficult with combing through all the youtube videos. Do you offer your course outside of Class 101? I don't really trust that platform because I just want your course. Any suggestions?

      I think you would get more traffic if you put it on your websit e. Class 101 is kind of a weird website. It is from Korea and translation from Korea to English is kind of a pain. They offer thousands of odd courses, but glad they let me buy your course individually rather than committing to their yearly service.
