All I want to do is simply illustrate my journals. Nothing fancy, just want to feel happiness at being able to draw something recognisable. I think the difference between you, and all the other teachers here, is they want to demonstrate how good they are, which is fine, but you want to encourage and help people feel good while they're doing it. Different goal.

Why do I want to draw? There's an inner urge, a need that is satisfied when I do it. Only the perfectionist self-critic can stop me before I begin. Self-critic says I need to watch some more tutorials before I pick up a pen or pencil. Your video helps me consider that I can learn by drawing.

Needed this today…I have (and keep buying more) art supplies and realize its been a way of procrastinating “making art”. I spent more time looking and ordering online than just doing it. Time to pick up a pen and paper and do something every day. Thank you Danny! Y

I'm laughing here. That is me also, and yes, all the online browsing and buying, it's procrastination because I'm afraid I won't succeed at something I want so badly to do. And then there's the organizing of the supplies. I've finally gotten started though.

Thanks for showing that Van Gogh drawing at the end, that´s typically the kind of things that gives me hope for improving. I had the "comparing syndrome" and that actually made me stop doing art for over 10 years, because I genuinely thought I needed some special gift to do beautiful art. Now, I came back to it and I know what I have to do to be better: Draw, draw, and draw. :)

portraits indistinguishable from photographs- Danny mimicking drawing on his photo😅 hilarious
the 3 facts to write inside your sketchbook are SO spot on
your early drawings are zero indication of what you will achieve in time. Repeat for the ones in the back-zero❤️
how you manage to squeeze so much good advice in a no bullshit clear approach yet remaining kind and empathetic to the struggles of anyone trying to follow this passion it’s very inspiring
    thank you!

You started in your late thirties!? Finding your channel has given me such hope. I felt like I was too old because I'm in my early thirties just starting from scratch (literally, I couldn't even draw stick figures confidently lol!) .. I have been practicing geometic shapes in different perspectivs (1, 2, 3 point) and shading them sometimes too. I took your advice from another video and just draw random things here and there as well.
Seeing someone with such a powerfully cultivated talent like yours, who started around my age, really gives me the hope I needed. I was worried it was just too late for me.
    Thank you.

Honestly, thank you very much. I was grinning as a little child the entire video, have given up on drawing 3 times in my life, and it was rather recently I went back to art fully determined to improve. I drew everyday, to the point I even developed the habit of drawing, which definitely counts as a victory.
Your advices have been a life-saver, this much I can tell. Despite how many times I had my confidence crushed by my incopetence, my passion was what drove me to continue, I stopped relying on feeble emotions in order to start any activity, and that changed my life for the better. I feel more determined now than ever to reach the level I aspire to reach, you've earned one more sub, teacher.

I am now binge-watching your videos as a new subscriber. Here's the thing. I don't want the money or accolades; never did. I just want to be good enough in my own eyes, to achieve what i set out to achieve. I also don't think VanGogh's early works were so awful. There is an honesty to one's early work that is often lost when one gets better at draftsmanship. I always grieve that loss. Maybe I'm just a weirdo but these are my thoughts as I watch your video. I loved when you showed us your self portraits - they were great - they had feeling and emotion. THAT is what i look for in art - does it move me to feel something? What you said about not comparing with others who you WISH you could be, but comparing yourself to yourself... that is golden. That is what I needed to hear today. Thank you.

Still life of my pen and sketchbook, koi, my son's Sacher Torte birthday cake, Edward Hopper's empty room, and an acquaintance's Edward Hopperisch photo of Denny's booth, a photo of a bowl of ramen I made for my kids that have received 1,249 upvotes (likes), a blueberry cake sample we tried for my upcoming birthday with swatches from a Sakura brush pen set I hoarded years ago now, and today a landscape of Mt Fuji with a swatch from another set of brush pens from the hoard.

I Been drawing on and off most of my life, sadly less and less as the years go by. I own iPad, Cintiq 22, oil, watercolour etc. everytime I want to create I cling to buying something cause I get so much anxiety of not knowing what to create.
I don’t know why I come back to art, each time I battle through anxiety to get started.
Today I started to draw beans in my sketchbook I haven’t touched for years. I then started to draw eyes on the beans.
Drawing is an expression of life, and it’s a very hard thing to look at life closely but the best thing we can do.
Your perspective on drawing really is an inspiration

I think deep down we all want be great at what we do. I also think we know deep down what it requires. You mentioned that for a year you worked with one pen and/or one subject. Getting the basics down (the music scales til your fingers bleed, the free throws long after practice is over, a chef working on one dish over and over, etc.). After this video, I will put a long term plan in place. A year or two on the basics. Simple objects. One medium. I’m 59 now. Maybe by age 70 I’ll start to make some progress. Maybe by 80 I’ll see my work on others walls. Thank you for the honest and inspiring content here on UA-cam. New subscriber.

Thank you very much🙏🏻the very motivation and thoughts i needed at the moment as a beginner. To focus on the process and my progress, not to compare myself on others who are already pros. 🙏🏻

Just starting and came across your content. You, sir, are wonderful. I’ve binged so many of your videos - while drawing! You take the overwhelm out of the process. Keep making great content!

I don’t know why I don’t apply “compare myself to I” when it comes to creative pursuits. I have been adhering to this principle for most of my adult life, comparing changes from year to year. As long as I have done something new, making progress in something, or having new insight about myself, I feel a sense of accomplishment. I don’t know why when it comes to creating I completely freeze seeing that headlight. I discount everything I have tried, feeling frustrated and defeated. I feel like I have no talent at all just seeing ppl’s work for sale on Etsy.

Thank you for making this video - I needed to hear this. Like you, I'm also teaching myself. I've just reached the stage where I can see where I've made 'mistakes' in some areas & I'm making notes on that page, but in other areas, I can't see where the mistakes are - I just know that it doesn't look right. I know that I'll get to being able to see where those mistakes are, probably sooner than I think.

My first assignment from a college art and design professor to an architecture student that hadn't taken an art class since middle school was:
Draw your hand every day and no two drawings can be the same. Every once in a while he would add a new restriction. You can't pick up your pen. Now you can't look at the drawing.
He also told us we could only ask one question for the whole semester. If you asked him a question about an assignment, his response was always "Is that going to be your one question?"
At the time I don't think i really understood.
its sort of funny seeing similar advice and instruction coming from a different source.

This is great advice. I had hardly drawn in the 35+ years since leaving school then a year or so ago I got really into copying doodles I saw here on a couple of UA-cam channels. You may think: Doodles, what has that got to do with real art? Well because they were in bite size chunks it was way easier to motivate myself to regularly practice - in fact I didn’t even do it that regularly. But in the shortest time I found my lines getting more confident and found myself actually tackling a whole picture rather than a single doodle (and feeling motivated to do it). I treated myself to some markers and copied a landscape photo from Pinterest to practice colouring in. I got a heap of compliments but the best one for me was from someone who wasn’t expecting much but when I showed them they just went “woah” 😂 So if practising every day even sounds too daunting, then just remember that you can progress just by doodling here and there now and then. Of course dedicated practice is even better, but some of us have ADHD and can’t reach that level of commitment. 😂🤣😂🤣😂

A fourth item to write in the front of your sketchbook: YOUR CONTACT INFO! After all the drawing you’ve done, you don’t want to loose it.
Good point about not comparing yourself. At Urban Sketchers throw down at the end of the outing, new sketchers compare their work to others. I now know to help them change the self talk. I give them some perspective. “She’s an international prize winning architectural illustrator who’s taught at Parsons for heaven’s sake. Give yourself a break”. I have to say that to myself sometimes, too. :)
