How Not Get Entangled in Detailed Drawings!

- Frustrated because when you draw complex and detailed scenes you end up with so many lines they all seem tangled and it can be hard to make out what the subjects are? This video explains and demonstrates how to approach a scene which could easily end up a tangle, but instead how to keep control of the drawing, and bring clarity out of chaos. The reference photo is on the channel Community Page if you have to have a go drawing it after you've watched the video.

Yep, it is a challenge to convey depth on a subject like this with a pen ( specially technical/felt tips due to uniformity of line width and opacity). My go to method to subdue background foliage is to render them with as sparse line work as possible, otherwise they'll crowd/ overpower the foreground details. But man, your architectural sketches blows my mind - much respect!

Hello, I'm kind of new to taking art very seriously. When people say to look at someone's style to discover what style you would like to do, I look at yours. I love it so much. I was wondering though if your style could only really be applied to illustrations or if you could use it in animation. Thanks for these videos!
Thank you Justin. That’s very kind. I’m afraid I don’t know anything about animation or the particular illustrations you have in mind. But there are no rules. If you think a style is suitable, then give it a try, or adapt it until it is. All the best with your art. 😀

Final product looks a bit messy tbh (I see too many scribbles, why not make more solid shapes?), but the tips are accurate.
Thanks Jason. For me, capturing the spiky profusion of the Australian bush was the aim in this drawing. I think my marks are more intentional than scribbles, but there are a lot of them, certainly. This is the effect I’m after, but I can see it might easily be too ‘full-on’ for some people. I hope you have a go drawing the scene yourself and use my drawing to help you find a more restrained technique. Have fun. 😀

You should use camera stabilizing software in post if you ever have jitter on your video like this. I love this tutorial but watching for too long makes my head spin lol

Do you make notan sketches? I always strive to observe the largest shapes before the final details. I find that the longer I spend on the large, vague shapes, the more time I have to make corrections before committing to dark lines. If I do this long enough, the details begin introducing themselves to me! 😂 Regarding details, working on small, or even tiny pictures can be a first step; tiny squares in your sketch book with sight-sized subjects drawn in them. Or a study of the details within a parallelogram created by some branches.
I don’t use a notan framework deliberately, but much of how I’ve developed my observation and thinking when I draw does overlap. 😀

I’m loving your videos. You mention having done oil painting for 10 years and missing it. What made you switch to black and white line art?
I started drawing a trip to Paris in 2018 and kept it up when I got back. It became what I did over the next year. 😀

I think the ones that have beginner in the title are generally helpful (in the black and red thumbnail ones) and ones that explain my freehand drawing techniques. Even if the subjects are complex, the principles are the same.

Im no where near your level, but since Ive subscribed I watched your cross hatching tips video and noticed. I feel as though your method in that video couldve helped with this to show depth of field and the trees further in the back. the vertical lines even though they work to show a little mid ground, hurt the back ground depth (if that makes since) I dont know if adding circles or different variations darkness to lightness couldve helped make the foreground and background so much different. especially since youre dealing with a pen and lack of colors 😂😂😭😭. but then again this challenge is very CHALLENGING and the point of your video was to not get entagled in the details which is the pitfall of many artists. DEFINITELY ME. thank you for your lessons teacher.
I was trying to restrict hatching on this drawing, but of course I was free to use it. Why not try to draw it yourself with more hatching in the mid ground and distance? It would be an educative exercise for you. 😀

Hey Stephen, nice video and now you got me curious, what were the reasons that motivated you out of the painting to go into this long inking endeavour?
It wasn’t planned. Some chance street sketching of Notre Dame on a trip to Paris in 2018, and then the discovery of this huge urban sketching world and genre through my Instagram account all seemed to help it become a larger and larger part of my art practice until it took over completely. I’ve always loved architecture. Perhaps also after ten years intense oil painting of tree canopies I was ready for a change. 😀

@@stephentraversart I would have. Let the imagination of the viewer fill in the blanks. Keep them guessing, keep them interested, make them work for it. But I would also have included just a few spots of the lightest colorwash. You do you, I do me, and it's all good. And as a result a single drawing can become a thousand drawings, to each and everyone personal.
Absolutely. In my post-drawing critique I decided I should have switched to a lighter pen towards the top, and had a little less line in parts of the centre. I would have enjoyed painting this in oils, quite a different experience than with watercolour. 😀
