    I'd like to imagine that in all these movies with hilariously ineffective alien invaders, said alien invaders are not actually an army or organized invasion force, but more like the galactic equivalent of a Somalian pirate gang.

      id buy that because a real well trained force with true alien weapons, yeah we would be fucked , till we reverse engineered their tech, on the bright side firearms work in space, long as you can counteract recoil they still fire and everything

      I can see that. Because a unified and organized alien species would either not waste time invading one populated planet when they can strip mine every uninhabited rock in our system without issues or they would just bombard us from orbit with asteroids or those Hammer of the Gods things from GI Joe.

    • @Cirac1

      Some of the scientific community believe if aliens did want to invade; we wouldn't even know - some brand new super virus would pop up out of nowhere and we'd all be dead before they even bother to set foot on the rock.
      I like to equate that to smallpox and the native americans.

    0:30 Actually....I used to be an intelligence analyst in the US Army, and yes, we watched the news all the time on the watch floor. During Operation Desert Fox we had CNN on constantly because the reporters hunkered down in Baghdad could get video of the air strikes out much faster than proper military channels. In a scenario like the one in the movie, every military installation with access to cable television worldwide would be tuned in to the reports from the scene, including those in the Pentagon and White House.
    As far as front-line Marines hanging out at a stateside base during what was peacetime, no--they do not have access to classified information.

      Well said, but you can't expect someone who never served to know all that. The average civilian has no fucking clue what we really do. I was a line medic for about half of my career, by the way. You would've been in our battalion S3 I believe. Just so ya know I wasn't some pencil pusher.

    • @ranger6213
      @ranger6213 7 років тому +11

      The purpose of a lieutenant's position is to learn how to work with his NCOs and communicate between his unit and his superiors. Basically, just to train new officers how to be officers, platoon sgts could replace them no problem.

    • @dernwine
      @dernwine 7 років тому +14

      Well yeah it makes it less of a sin, it's the way the military works. A older NCO essentially takes a new Officer under his wing to show him the ropes before the Officer goes on to lead large formations of men. But even if it where not sensible, the fact that it happens in real life makes it good screenwriting rather than something sinable.

    I was in a unit in the air force that required a high security clearance, and yet we still had TVs that was always tuned to the national news. So technically that's not a sin that troops with access to intelligence would watch the news. The reason why we watched the news was because often the news reporters on the ground had access to intelligence quicker than we were able to see it and pass it to the appropriate ranks. So that part of the movie was realistic.

      Denis, actually, you'd be amazed at how much farmland is in every state. As it is, most states just specialize in a few things, but if something really went down, each state would have plenty of land to raise crops and animals of all kinds for food, and it would take less than a year to be fully self-sufficient in that regard. Expensive and time-consuming and stressful until it's all up and running, but in reality, most of the food produced in the midwest is exported to other countries as it is now.

    The Marine was yelling 25 meters. When you make contact with the enemy, the drill is to call out distance and direction. It helps cue your buddies where they should be scanning. In theory, it sounds simple, but as soon as that first round wiz by, all hell breaks loose and it's very difficult to communicate. Interesting things you didn't mention. Beginning on helicopter ride, they were having conversations. Can't do that on a military helicopter as there's no sound proofing from the turbine engines and blades, so unless they all have comms, you can't hear then next person beside you even if you're yelling. Also, if anyone remembers the tank fight, the dude rocking the fifty cal, the brass falling were blanks. You can tell if you look at the necks of the casings they are crimped indicating they're blanks. Finally, the rocket launcher used by Air Force chick is not guided. The AT4 has no guidance systems nor does it have a smart warhead. All you have is Kentucky windage and an effective range of 300m (a little over 300 yrds). Cheers!

    I think you missed the mark on some of the sins related to the military. This was actually pretty accurate in a lot of ways. Soldiers below the rank of general get all their information from the news or internal gossip, unless it's directly related to the mission their about to go on (and it's deemed important that they know). Also the fact that the staff sergeant is far more experienced is just normal for the military. Lieutenants are generally new with very little experience. This would not create conflict.

    • @jbarral6509
      @jbarral6509 8 місяців тому +1

  • @cadidiot_101
    @cadidiot_101 5 років тому +335

    As for the pulling the SSG back in, that is more than likely for this situation. He has much more experience with this specific unit than a new SSG so this is more than realistic.
    If this drastic of a situation came about and someone was on leave, there is no way in heck they would pull them back fast enough unless they were right down the road. They would definitely find a temporary replacement.
    An SSG is normally a squad leader, so knowing he was promoted to the position of PSG (normally a SFC) actually is important. Otherwise it would be a sin for an SSG being a PSG.
    The marksmen, they may be a part of the platoon but based on the number moving out this is not a full platoon movement. Also, it is important for the SSG to know what his subordinates and employ them in accordance with their capabilities. If he needs an overwatch, these would be the people he would send to do that. So I would say it is not the fact that the information is useless, but rather the sin is that the LT is telling the SSG this information. Also, this is based on the level of marksmanship in the platoon, so no, someone else would not become the first and second best marksmen. Not to restate what I said before, but the reason this discussion was not led with the first and second marksmen is that they know who they are, but the LT or SSG may no know them.
    Overseas things can happen that lead to people being killed. As was later explained in the movie, the SSG was in a situation where either way he went he was done for. All the reason it was probably okay for this SSG to be on the mission.
    The reason they sent the Marines in rather than just helicopters is because helicopters do not do well without cover, especially with as much fire as these guys were taking. Also, helicopters take more space than a city street to land so the Marines are going in to extract the civilians to a safer landing zone.
    To me it seems like bomb drop was in quotes because it was a time event, which in the military also tend to be given code names, or are just given a name as in this case. Because of this, it is no longer A bomb drop, but rather THE bomb drop.
    Not going to bash the dog part too much, but it seems like it was an attempt to humanize the Marines and make a connection with them.
    Accuracy during a situation such as the combat seen here causes accuracy to decrease severely. One can go from 38/40 range quals to 12/40 without a problem in this situation. Also, when one is lying on their back firing up, accuracy tends to once again decrease.
    The combat scene also shows the amount of communication, movement, firing, and confusion in a combat situation. I actually see it to be an attempt to more accurately represent combat.
    One of the few guys we were introduced to that we don't remember is now missing. He was one of the top marksmen, but that information wasn't important.
    At least a few are gone after the ambush, but part of any soldier's motto is to always place the mission first. Also, those big fancy assault packs on their back are not just for decoration. There does tend to be medical supplies and ammo in there. Also, when we get into a position of cover, we like to take those assault packs off. They are heavy and often have supplies we need in them, like extra ammo.
    Smoke for signalling a helicopter is a by the books practice. Also the pilots have the coordinates of the LZ and the color of the smoke notifies the pilot of the threat level of the LZ. Not to mention the added concealment benefits while they maneuver the wounded to be picked up.
    The Marine introducing himself to the civilians did not know if it was a threat so he made noise as a surprise (harder to think right except "oh $#^&") and the use of the light was to blind anything in that area. The better sin would be "How did he know to point his rifle down when we saw these aliens were definitely taller."
    We can assume a chain of command because the one is moving around checking on subordinates and seems to have less armament than the others (like most REMFs). Also, based on the unity of control and span of control, it is highly realistic that there is some form of a chain of command.
    The alien doesn't need to be half-dead to get to it's heart. There is a reason we have rifles and other firearms.
    Aiming right of the heart is not that hard to do. A few center mass shots will easily do enough to allow for a stationary target long enough to get someone calmer to place rounds to the right of where the heart would be. This is also the reason that soldiers tend to fire in bursts at close range. The likelihood of hitting something vital drastically increases. Also, the protection will not last to a 5.56x45mm NATO. While it is a smaller round, those things still pack a punch and would easily pierce the armor the Marines are wearing.
    The alien could have only been shot at most 30 times and based on a 30% accuracy that even the most experienced shooters will have in that type of situation, that means likely only 10 rounds found their mark.
    You could explode the aliens to death if you had enough explosives for that. M203 rounds are much larger and heavier than 5.56x45mm rounds, and not to mention the M203 is much slower to reload. Also, in close combat situations the Marines would be killed by there own rounds and the blast from those rounds.
    The alien ship decided not to destroy the bus because it was looking for the radio signals and at that moment the SSG turned the radio on in a different location, causing the ship to redirect its course.
    The SSG being more experienced than the LT is absolutely realistic. A good LT sits back and listens to the senior NCO, but when it comes down to it, that LT is still a higher rank and he is still in charge. Also, that SSG has had 20 years of experience but that LT has only just graduated, probably from Annapolis or NROTC, and has no combat experience whatsoever.
    Why would an airman not be helping? Any Marine or soldier could tell you that one. The Air Force is not known for their ground combat skills and range time is minimal in basic training compared to the other branches. This TSG was definitely better than the normal airman. Also, only a few were ordered to jump up on that garbage truck and she could have easily gone somewhere else to assist.
    Based on the angle, those bullets could have still been hitting where the right side of the heart should be. Also, enough rounds on target will probably kill the things just as it would a human.
    You can see a hole go to the right of the center of the heart as the civilian is shooting.
    The alien ships have one main center because they need a unity of command, just like we have a unity of command with our troops. Also, that command post was more like a forward operating base than a central command.
    The map may have been less accurate from time, but based on how this was going, this is only the night after they left for the city meaning that not much would have changed in that time. The only thing that would have probably changed is the closing of this LZ.
    A fully loaded vehicle that either this unit loaded, or that was prepared to enter the combat zone but was shut down because of the direct attack. That vehicle being loaded and ready is more realistic than it sounds.
    The Marine laughing in the humvee, yeah that was actually realistic. If you can't find something to lighten the mood you will go crazy in combat. That is the reason there are so many military prank, military fail, and funny military videos on UA-cam.
    The civilian more than likely knew what the SSG meant by the letter for Martinez's wife. She watched Martinez's sacrifice and probably knows that soldiers tend to write those notes.
    The sewer combat scene is really a demonstration of the fog of war and how much confusion there really is when something like that happens.
    The command center pokes an antennae above the street so that it can control the drones and have communications with other aliens.
    Right of the heart was used, but several rounds were fired and they expected that in the heat of it all one would be paying attention to something other than where the rounds were going.
    The rifle is a primary weapon, but the sidearm is just as effective with the range of combat in that situation. Within 25yds I would consider switching to the sidearm rather than finding cover more than reasonable.
    The ship will more than likely have a piece sticking above the ground because as previously mentioned. That piece is an antennae to control the communications and the drones.
    You missed a sin that I thought was an annoyance as well. Most soldiers and Marines alike will call a forward operating base a fob and even say that rather than continually calling it an F-O-B.

      You are pretty spot on with this analysis except for one point; the 5.56 NATO Green Tip penetrators will not easily penetrate the sapi plates that the Marines are wearing. The Level IV plants that they are wearing is designed handle up to 30.06 armour piercing rounds. I personally seen one of these plates after it was hit by three of 5.56 penetrates and it held up fine.
      I almost feel like CinemaSins should take a second look at this movie and subtract a few sins. Even the parts with the Marine helping out his buddy pick out flowers and the dog seen are pretty darn accurate of how grunts actually are.

There are tons of freely available mineral resources (and water) floating in the solar system, much more easily accessed with less expenditure of existing resources. If you want the planet, for some reason, bombardment from space is the first and easiest first action to take against a civilization that can't be bothered to have any rapid access to planetary orbit, let alone interplanetary travel.

That sucks because this movie was way ahead of its time then. It shows exactly how the military would engage an unknown threat. Also, it shows how just because aliens have superior technology, we could still be able to beat them. This movie really felt like a video game. It did a very good job of putting the viewer in the shoes of the marines and showed us exactly how it would feel to be on the battlefield.

Frankly this military force that our guys went up against seemed a lot more like the equivalent of an organized pirate organization than some galactic civilizations military force. Their gear had that whole second hand kind of feel to it. And even their craft seemed almost second rate. Theres any number of reasons that that kind of force wouldnt just use an orbital bombardment of asteroids. in the case here where i believe they were taking water, im not 100% sure on that its been awhile since i watched it, an orbital strike with asteroids large enough to wipe us out would quite possibly vaporize a significant portion of our oceans as the earths temperature skyrocketed. Fling enough giant space rocks with metal cores and its possible you might accidentally do that. Then too, if they are after other mineral resources, inwhich case as was stated they should be mining the entire damned solar system... You face the problem of accidentally liquifying said resources. Actually, speaking of the rest of the solar system, both oxygen and hydrogen are incredibly abundant in our solar system, it shouldnt be hard for a spacefaring civilizations military to, oh idfk, MAKE WATER. The aliens wouldn't have to wipe us out. All they would have to do would be to destroy our military and industrial capability. This movie, while it was an entertaining shoot-'em-up, fails the realism test on two major grounds. (1) The aliens could get plenty of water from capturing a few comets in the Oort Cloud. (2) If the aliens, for some reason, chose to invade Earth, they wouldn't need to put troops on the ground; asteroid bombardment from low Earth orbit (LEO) would do the trick. Of course, if the aliens did that, then we wouldn't have much of a movie, would we?

    • @DavidEllis94
      @DavidEllis94 3 роки тому +2

      @@spaceman081447 If you want to occupy Earth, you definitely do have to land. If they want to eradicate us, then yeah, just chuck asteroids at us. Occupation requires more than just bombardment.
      Accurate strikes on point targets would be difficult from long distances without midcourse correction, but lower orbits make you more vulnerable to potential response from ground-based missiles, depending on what the defenders can field. But of course, if you want to be ferrying rocks to Earth, that takes a while, too, so that's time to developing ground based missiles with larger boosters to try to return fire to higher altitudes.
      So, yeah, it's not as simple as just sitting in orbit and dropping shit, unless you are just aiming to wipe everyone out.

      RE: ". . . but lower orbits make you more vulnerable to potential response from ground-based missiles, depending on what the defenders can field."
      It takes a while to get to even low Earth orbit from the surface. So the aliens would be able to easily spot missile launches from their heat blooms and take them out with either lasers or kinetic kill weapons. Then, of course, the aliens would nuke the missile launch sites.
      I agree, though, that occupation, actual alien "boots on the ground," presents a different situation. But why would the aliens give up such a significant advantage, the space "high ground," without prior preparation? The aliens could conceivably bombard the planet, either with rocks or nukes, until most of the planet's population is either dead or hiding in small disorganized groups in caves.
      However, as I've said before, the basic premise of the movie (that the aliens want our water) is faulty. It should be easy for anyone capable of interstellar travel to harvest a few comets from the Oort Cloud to get all the water (plus a lot of other useful stuff) they could want and they wouldn't even have to worry about any pesky humans.

Same issue with the "Air support". Unless we know something is comming weeks in advance at any given time a good portion of our Air Power isn't flyable, or in a better case scenario is NMC, or non mission capable, due to needed maintenance. It can take days of people working their asses off around the clock to get some of these birds ready to go (if you have the parts see current events.) and several hours to get them armed up and ready to fly. I liked this flick, but it may as well have been called "Cliche. The movie". Every military trope, archetype, and situation was here: The aging, super capable sarge, who's seen some shit, the commanding officer who's a jerk at first, then dies heroically, the recruit who just had a baby born back home( he's a dead man), etc.. you knew who was gonna die way before they actually did. Fun, but predictable in the extreme.

    This film has its pros and cons, but what really bothers me when watching is:
    - the fact that they start easily killing the aliens after learning that you should shoot their chest (you know… the area you would probably hit if you didn’t know it anyway).
    - that the aliens basically become a mix of WWII movie Nazis and stormtroopers by the final part of it.
    And it don't exactly bothers me, but I must admit that I didn't know how was how at most of the scenes. It was almost like watching a film full of the supporting characters from a Resident Evil movie.

      In defense of the film. First contact with the aliens is an alien ambush followed by the standing up of the alien air power. The big turning point in combat wasn’t finding out where to shoot at but rather engaging the enemy in linear engagements where Marines can utilize small unit tactics and fire and maneuver.

Most Junior officers are younger than SNCOs, and most SNCO are more experienced than a Junior Office, the SAW gunner would call 25 meters to inform the distance of the enemy contact, and the LT giving the SSGT a run down of who the expert shooters in the platoon are would be pretty typical debrief of your unit assets to new leadership with the unit.

    Having served... I can tell you one of the most realistic parts of this whole film is soldiers sitting round watching the news for information... mushrooms...Also... shopping for flowers with your mucker? Happens. (Thats two so far right?) Me again.... after contacts things do get quiet and people have empathy... so learning a dogs name could, would and does happen.OK, I get it, you've never been in the forces therefore you've never been wounded or seen someone wounded... but trained or not, getting hurt makes people act weird sometimes, despite their training.
    One second you're saying a wounded soldier is trained and acting outside his training while wounded, the next you're saying trained soldiers using the correct method to indicate an LZ are doing it wrong? Jezz.
    Again... An officer, especially in the American military is generally considered the leader. The senior NCO is there to guide him or her and if necessary correct what their experience tells is a poor decision. The military is a hierarchy and there are boundaries.
