Comparators also have a subtraction mode. Right clicking on the comparator turns on the third light and putting it into subtraction mode. When in this mode, comparator subtracts redstone signal on one or both sides from the signal on the back of the comparator and output the result in the front.
To be honest I didn't know it worked like this, I just knew that the simple redstone signal repeating thing everyone uses required you to right click it for whatever reason lol (If my wording confused you at all, I'm referring to when you power the back and then connect the front and one of the sides with redstone to repeatedly turn the redstone on and off very quickly)
@@hithereireallysuckyeah, that's basically the comparator doing subtraction over and over again. You give it a constant redstone signal at the back and wire the front of the comparator to it's side. One tick the clock is turned on, then the next tick the comparator subtracts the signal on the side from the signal on the back and the clock turns off, then the next tick the comparator realizes that the signal on the side is turned off and there is no subtraction to be done, so the clock now turns on again, and then it just repeats the cycle over and over until you remove the signal on the back of the comparator

While I'm a bit of a redstone fan, I've only built relatively simple contraptions in Survival (usually part of farms) and a few flying machines in Creative (actually one more in Survival, so I could get the elytra, as the island that an End gateway had led me to was a little bit lonely). The most advanced thing I've built in Survival was a blaze farm that automatically suffocates blazes to 1 hit point once there are enough of them (before the 24 entity cramming limit). Also, I've had my character recently die on an SMP to a hoglin that threw me off a bridge into lava - I had crappy armor with no Protection so I couldn't just tank the damage and sustain myself on food like you did.
